Vanessa Weigand Goes Deep; Kaitlyn Estes Gets Walkoff Hit as Panthers Derail DeKalb

Pattonsburg unloaded on DeKalb in the first inning, then hung by their fingernails the rest of the way before getting a walkoff single from Kaitlyn Estes with two outs in the seventh to beat DeKalb 11-10 Monday. DeKalb had lost once before, a 3-2 squeaker to powerhouse North Platte on the first game of the season. After that, DeKalb rode a seven game winning streak, including two quality wins against Maysville and their first win over Platte Valley since 2019.

The Panthers got hits up and down the lineup as Estes and Addie Iddings had three hits, Jayden Goble, Emsleigh McCrary, Vanessa Weigand, and Rosalynn Cameron had 2 and Kara Bernardino had 1. Cameron had a triple and a double, Vanessa Weigand had a home run, Addie Iddings and Emsleigh McCrary added triples, and Kaitlyn Estes had a double. Jayden Goble had a steal.

Pattonsburg continued to struggle with errors, with one leading to DeKalb’s first run in the first inning. But they had an outstanding defensive play when second baseman Cheyenne Miller doubled a runner off first after snaring a line drive to get out of the first inning.

Jayden Goble singled to start off the Panthers in their half, then stole second. The Panthers almost wasted their opportunity when Goble held up on Addie Iddings’ fly ball that dropped in left field and was cut down at third and Isabella Burger struck out. But they got all their runs with two outs as Kaitlyn singled to left to keep the inning going as Iddings took third. Estes took second on a wild pitch and then Emsleigh McCrary singled to center, scoring Iddings and putting Estes on third.

McCrary took second on defensive indifference and then Vanessa Weigand singled to center as Estes scored and McCrary took third. Kara Bernardino singled home McCrary as Weigand took third to make it 3-1. Rosalynn Cameron tripled to center to score Weigand and Bernardino to make it 5-1. Cheyenne Miller reached second on an error and Cameron scored to make it 6-1. Jayden Goble walked on a 3-2 count. Addie Iddings singled up the middle to score Miller to make it 7-1.

DeKalb started its comeback bid in the second when Ceci Sherlock bunted into an out, but a subsequent error allowed Gretchyn Bowers to score and make it 7-2. Pattonsburg got the run back when Emsleigh McCrary tripled to right and Vanessa Weigand grounded out to score her and make it 8-2.

Consecutive singles by Kenzie Pflugradt, Grace Downing, and Rylie Burdette brought a run home for DeKalb in the third to make it 8-3. They got another run home when Lily Wagner singled home a run, but Rosalynn Cameron cut down a runner at third to get out of the inning.

Pattonsburg was seemingly in control after Kaitlyn Estes reached on an error and Vanessa Weigand homered to make it 10-4. But then back to back doubles by Kenzie Pflugradt and Grace Downing in the DeKalb fifth made it 10-5. Pattonsburg should have been out of the inning, but an error opened the floodgates and two more runs scored to cut the DeKalb deficit to 10-7.

In the DeKalb sixth, three more runs scored with two outs. Alivia Hall singled with one out and Kelsey Chatman bunted her over to second for the second out. Pflugradt singled her home to make it 10-8, and Grace Downing reached second on an error as Pflugradt scored, making it 10-9. Downing stole third and scored on an error to tie it before Cheyenne Miller caught a pop fly to get out of the inning.

But Rosalynn Cameron led off the seventh with a double in the Pattonsburg seventh. Cheyenne Miller struck out, but Jayden Goble singled Cameron to third. Addie Iddings was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force at home. Isabella Burger flied out, but Kaitlyn Estes caught hold of the first pitch she saw and singled home Cameron for the game winning hit.
