Under Jake Shipman, Mustang Boys Earned Respect During Six Year Run

Last week’s 39-23 North Nodaway boys loss to Albany represented the end of an era, as it was the last game that Jake Shipman coached the North Nodaway boys after six years at the helm. Tyler Bix made the All-District Squad. Shipman will coach the North Nodaway baseball team this spring, and then become the Mound City Principal and Athletic Director.

Shipman subsequently posted this on his Facebook page: “I’ve struggled putting this into words for a very long time. Earlier this year I received a job offer from a school district I hold a very high regard, Mound City. Next year I will be their HS Principal and Athletic Director. I am very excited for this opportunity and look forward to working with the great people in the district! With that excitement there is also sadness.”

“During my time at NN I have had the privilege to work with some of the best people in education. I’ve had the opportunity to watch boys grow up into men and constantly be reminded of how rewarding coaching and teaching can be.”

“Last night was a lot harder than I expected. It was my last night coaching basketball at NN. Last night coaching a group of juniors and seniors that I’ve been with since they were in middle school basketball. And the last night coaching with a true friend who I wish all the luck in the world to in his seasons in the future, Michael Trautz.”

“Though my time isn’t over at NN till May, these past 6 years have been the most beneficial of my life. And I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has supported me these past years. My beautiful wife, Morgan Shipman and our amazing son Jack. My close friend and mentor, Tim Conn. And all the friends who have helped me along the way. I still get to coach baseball and finish these last few months strong as a Mustang!”

The Mustangs had finished the previous year as a doormat, winning only two games that year. But in Shipman’s first year at the helm of North Nodaway, he won 17 games. Things did not look promising at first, as North Nodaway got off to a 2-5 start. But then they went on a tear, winning 15 of their last 19 games and won 17 games in the 2014-2015 campaign. They lost a heartbreaker to Trevor Meyer and West Nodaway for the Northwest Missouri Tournament title on a last-second shot from Meyer, but they turned around and beat the Rockets twice. Against Worth County, they lost 49-35 in December, only to turn around and beat them in districts. They threw a scare into Stanberry, trailing by only six at one point before losing 55-41 in the semifinals. Stanberry would go on to the Final Four.

In the 2015-2016 season, the Mustangs won their first tournament in 50 years, beating South Nodaway 63-56 to win the Northwest Missouri Tournament. The last time a North Nodaway boys squad won a tournament, in 1965, Ron Huff was the leading scorer and they beat Sheridan 59-57 at the Ravenwood Tournament. Wayne Winstead was coaching for the Bearcats that game. “That was a fun year,” said Shipman afterwards. “I hope we don’t have to wait another 50 years for our next one.”
That team featured Kobe Reynolds and Peyton Coleman, who could both break down defenses at will. They did not have very much size, yet they consistently outworked other teams. They rarely buried teams, yet they were rarely out of a game either. Both eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in their careers.

The 2016-2017 season had more exciting basketball. Against Mound City, as North Nodaway was holding the ball for a last-second tiebreaking shot, everybody thought Peyton Coleman would take the last shot, but instead, Dakota Smyser took it to the hole and won it at the buzzer 43-41 in double overtime. Tyler Bix, then a freshman, was instrumental in that win. At the Northwest Missouri Tournament, Peyton Coleman won a scoring duel over Korbin Koch as the Mustangs beat West Nodaway 66-51. Against East Atchison, who won 20 games that year, the Mustangs gave the Wolves everything they could handle and came up just short, but Coleman had 37 that game.

The 2017-2018 season was a rebuilding year, but there were still highlights. On February 7th, North Nodaway led state-ranked Worth County the whole way until the Tigers came back in the fourth quarter to win 56-53. On February 15th, the Mustangs came back from 15 points down in a wild game to beat West Nodaway 73-66.

The 2018-2019 season saw a revival in North Nodaway’s fortunes, as they were in most of their games, even against strong teams. Against a 27-2 Mound City squad that was stopped by Jefferson at the Civic Arena, North Nodaway gave them everything they could handle before they fell 63-48 on December 11th. They put up another good fight against East Atchison, leading much of the way, before falling 48-41 on January 9th; the Wolves would finish 22-4 that year.

The South Holt game was one of the biggest wins the Mustang boys had during the course of the Shipman era. It also showed that Michael Trautz, the man who will take over for Shipman, is ready for a head coaching job. The junior varsity squad, led by Trautz, set the tone for the whole evening by beating the Knights for Courtwarming, playing as a team as well as a lot of varsity units and playing the kind of complete game that a lot of varsity squads would love to see. That set the tone for the whole night. After the girls won over a solid Knights squad that took it to the next level this year, the varsity boys took the floor. That game, Cody Wood went to the rack at will, getting 41 points in a 77-69 overtime win. Ryan Riley was lights out from 3-point range that game.

West Nodaway, played on February 14th, 2019, was another epic win for the Mustangs. They faced seemingly impossible deficits against the Rockets, the crowd was screaming, and nothing seemed to be going right. But the Mustangs chipped away, and by the fourth quarter, they were right back in it. Sure enough, they came away with the 65-63 win. It was Shipman’s 100th coaching win at both Gilman City and North Nodaway. The Mustangs would finish 13-10 last year.

This year, North Nodaway continued to surprise people. Having lost Arron Coleman and Cody Wood, the catalysts for last year, they nonetheless won another 13 games and finished at 13-12. They were lights-out from downtown, capable of making 10 threes a night. Tyler Bix emerged as one of the top clutch players on the team, and the Mustangs were particularly good at the line. If the Mustangs had the lead at the end of the game, it was usually game over, as they were automatic from the line at that stage.

They came from behind to beat West Nodaway on December 4th, as Cameron Wilson came off the bench and put on a clinic, blocking some shots and getting some boards. They beat Worth County twice, and they beat West Nodaway again in the Northwest Missouri Tournament as Austin Bird sparked the Mustangs with 20 first half points. They avenged a 67-43 blowout loss to St. Joseph Christian, beating them 41-40 in Fairfax to take third. They avenged another loss at Fairfax as well, beating South Holt in overtime 46-40 after losing to them back in December. Shipman was always a tough coach to beat twice; they won three different “revenge” games this year.

Their starting five worked well together and played well together. Ryan Riley was a constant threat to shoot long 3-pointers with a hand in his face. Austin Bird could score points in bunches and became a threat to go to the rim after being a 3-point shooter for much of his career. Karson Oberhauser was a steady presence, was the top defender and rebounder on the team, and had 16 boards against DeKalb. Andrew Blackford emerged as another shooter; along with his brother Aydan, who will be a freshman next year, they will pose a formidable duo for Trautz to work with. Bix was a constant threat to drive, and he developed a 3-point shot this year.

Trautz will have plenty to work with next year. Karson Oberhauser will return, as will Andrew Blackford. Jeremiah Dobbins got some quality minutes against DeKalb and looks to compete for a spot. Two promising freshmen, Ethan Fry and Aydan Blackford, will compete for a starting spot as well. Hunter Carlson could develop into a force in the post, and Damian Dailey and Darron Bix both have length and athleticism.

Tiger Seniors Brought Back Excitement to Worth County

On Thursday night, the seniors on the Worth County girls basketball team played their last game, falling 49-47 to Platte Valley. The game was close all the way, with Worth County missing a last-second shot that would have sent it to overtime. It was a performance that was nothing to be ashamed of; both teams laid it all on the line, and Platte Valley (Jefferson) has always elevated its game in the postseason in a way that few other teams can match.

Before their last game, the girls rewrote the recordbook, posting a winning season each of their last four years. The previous year, in 2015-2016 they won two games, but under Les New, they showed immediate improvement in the 2016-2017 season. Playing in the first game of the totally revamped gym, with totally different scenery, the Tigers put up the most points they had posted in recent memory, beating Princeton 76-56. Anna Gladstone and Regan Allee, both freshmen, each scored 24 in the win. The losing coach, NEN grad Brian Hall, didn’t even think his squad played badly; “We’ll win a lot of games scoring 56 points,” he said at the time.

Despite the early fireworks, things did not improve right away, as the Tigers started off 5-10, getting schooled by the likes of Stanberry, Mount Ayr (60-14), North Andrew, and other powerhouse schools. But all of a sudden, they started finding their stride, winning three in a row after the Stanberry Tournament. They held off Grace Schottel and King City, winning by 42-39; they had another epic battle with North Nodaway, in which Worth County looked finished twice and North Nodaway looked finished twice. But it was Worth County who came on top by four 43-39.

The Tigers kept right on winning, dropping games only to East Atchison in the Northwest Missouri Tournament and North Harrison, with Payton Craig and Brandy Rivet. Along the way, Regan Allee broke the single game scoring record, hitting 11 3-pointers and scoring 35 points to lead the Tigers to victory over Nodaway-Holt. She broke the record held by Becky Fletcher, her aunt, who scored 33 points in an epic scoring duel with North Harrison’s Tracy Parkhurst, who had 31 as Worth County won 63-61.

Worth County rolled into districts, in which they hadn’t won a game in 11 years, since Tiffany Troutwine’s senior year. They were pitted against East Harrison, whom they had beaten 67-38 earlier in the year, but who had shown a lot of improvement under Bill Pottorff, one of the most colorful coaches in the area.

The Bobcats kept hanging around as Worth County missed a ton of shots. But the Tigers hung on for the 50-42 win, their first district win in 11 years. Now, they were pitted against North Harrison, who had beaten them earlier in the year in the same building. But it was Worth County who got off to the hot start.

However, Payton Craig carried the Shamrocks on her shoulder, and by the fourth quarter, Worth County’s lead was gone and the game went into double overtime. A win would give the Tigers a winning season for the first time since the 2005-2006 season. But in the second overtime frame, with Worth County up 52-50, Anna Gladstone missed both free throws with six seconds left and it looked like Worth County would have to play defense one more time. But in the twinkling of an eye, the game was over, as Jessi Badell put back her miss and Worth County won 54-50 and got their winning season, finishing at 14-13 after starting off at 5-10. They had won 9 out of their last 12, being stopped only by the eventual state champion Mercer squad.

From there on out, Worth County had a sustained run of success, winning 21 games in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and 23 games this year. They were GRC West Co-Champs two times, the GRC Champions this year after beating Milan, made it to the State Quarterfinals twice, and saw both Anna Gladstone and Regan Allee score over 1,000 points during their career. By the end of their careers, they had won 79 games.

They always had a formidable supporting cast, so that teams could not just key on Anna and Regan. Kristin New was always a threat to steal the ball, and she was the team’s best ball-handler. Kaylee McElvain was a shot-blocking presence in the paint and could hit 3-pointers from outside and had a good mid-range jumper. Merrideth Spiers was physical, able to rebound and make hustle plays. Jenna Smith could shoot from outside as well, steal the ball, and lighten up the mood and crack everyone up.

There were plenty of players who went before them who helped them along the way. Jessi Badell was a force underneath the boards, always a threat to get 10 a game; she could block shots as well and was a disruptive presence when Worth County went into their trap. Payton Adwell provided a steady hand to help the team get started back in 2016-17. Haley Hunt emerged as a scoring threat during the latter part of the season last year, starting with the Pattonsburg game, in which Worth County won the first of its two GRC West titles.

Whatever happens next year, this group of seniors left the team in better shape than they found it. Megan Cassavaugh has turned into one of the best defenders in the area this year. Jill Hardy will be one of the better rebounders on the team, can light it up from long range, and always has a smile on her face. EmiLee Brown can seal in the post and can pass it out again. Ali Brown, whose mother, Dawn (Judd) Brown was coached by Les New at Southwest Community College, will be one of the more physical posts Worth County has had in a while. Hailey Adwell can step in as a guard, Justina Wimer can light it up from outside, and Kynah Steele will be a promising freshman.

Kaylee McElvain Posts Career High as Tiger Girls Advance

Worth County erupted for 79 points against West Nodaway, the most points this group of players has scored, as they got a 79-30 win over the Rockets in districts Saturday.

Anna Gladstone had 28 points; it was the third time she has gotten that many points, and each time, it has been on the new Albany court. She had 28 in Albany last year against the Warriors, 28 against Pattonsburg this year in the Albany Tournament, and 28 in Saturday’s game.

For Kaylee, she erupted for 11 points in the third quarter to get to her career high mark. Two more Tigers got into double figures as Regan Allee had 11 and Kristin New added 10 for the Tigers.

The game was the second in a row in which Worth County had broken the 70 point barrier and the third time in the last four games. They scored 76 against Maysville Thursday, and they scored 73 against Pattonsburg last Monday.

Regan Allee started off the scoring with a 3-pointer, and then Kristin New got loose in transition after a Kaylee McElvain steal to make it 5-0. Riley Linville countered with two free throws, but then Regan Allee hit another 3-pointer, Anna Gladstone got a steal and fed Kaylee McElvain for a layup, and then Kaylee got another steal and Regan Allee entered it into Anna, who got two free throws to make it 12-2.

The Tigers kept pulling away with balanced scoring as Kaylee McElvain had 8 in the first quarter and Regan Allee, Kristin New, and Anna Gladstone all had six in the period as Worth County pulled out to a 26-8 lead.

In the second, Anna Gladstone had 14 points, getting 8 of them off straight steals and Regan Allee and Kaylee McElvain added 5 each as the Tigers pulled out to a 50-10 halftime lead.

In the third, Kaylee got the hot hand with 11 points, and Anna Gladstone added 8 in the period as Worth County led 73-20. Ali Brown got on the board in the fourth, getting four points. EmiLee Brown added a putback at the buzzer.

Anna Gladstone had 28 points and Kaylee McElvain 24. Regan Allee had 11, Kristin New 10, Ali Brown 4, and EmiLee Brown 2.

Tiger Boys Survive Track Meet to Outlast Rock Port 77-70

Worth County’s boys broke out of a late-season slump at just the right time, leading Rock Port from wire to wire in a 77-70 win in districts Monday night. Before the game, Coach Les New had said that his squad needed four different players to score in double figures to be effective. Worth County had gotten by in their 57-45 win over Maysville with three in double figures, but this time, they got four.

The Tigers raced out to a 20-14 first quarter lead and extended it to 39-28 at halftime. From there, they held off repeated charges from Rock Port to get the win. The Blue Jays got it down to six several times in the second half, but could never get closer, as Worth County would always hit a timely 3-pointer or have someone get the hot hand.

Alex Rinehart had 22 points, Jackson Runde 20, Jaxon Anderson 17, and Aydan Gladstone 13 for the Tigers. Grant Cameron had 3 and Jackson Smith 2. The Tigers had nine 3-pointers for the day.

Mustang Girls Drop Heartbreaker in Districts

North Nodaway’s girls dropped a heartbreaker against Albany in the first round of districts, falling 46-42 to the Warriors in overtime.

At first, it looked like Albany would run away with the game. North Nodaway faceguarded Gabby Newman and held her down for most of the game as Saylor Brown established herself as one of the top defenders in the area; she is just a sophomore. But Sierra Anthony ran wild in the post all day, scoring 21 points and carrying the Warriors on her shoulders.

Albany scored the first eight points of the game, and looked to be in control; however, Ellaina Renfro got a putback and then Kandace Damgar shot the Mustangs back into the game, so that they took an 11-9 lead after one quarter.

Despite struggling with turnovers (32) and giving up offensive boards all day (21), North Nodaway somehow stayed in the game and were down only two at the half after Saylor Brown’s drive at the buzzer. They then took the lead when Saylor Brown hit a 3-pointer, Jadon Dobbins scored off a drive, and Jacquelyn Cline scored off another to put the Mustangs in front 24-19. Anthony brought the Warriors back to within 26-24 after three, but North Nodaway looked to be in control after pulled away to a 32-25 lead with 4:59 left in the fourth after Jacquelyn Cline’s drive.

But then Michaela Martin got a steal, which led to a three point play from Emily Poppa, which resurrected Albany’s chances. North Nodaway got another steal to make it 32-30. Saylor Brown scored off a drive to make it 34-30 with 1:45 left, but Kayce Messner answered with a 3-pointer and Albany got yet another steal and Messner tied it at 34 with 1:17 left.

After both sides passed up chances to go ahead, Gabby Newman finally got untracked with 25 seconds, scoring a free throw to put Albany in front 35-34. North Nodaway turned it over, Newman dribbled 10 seconds off the clock before she got fouled, and made one out of two to make it 36-34 with 10.5 seconds left.

North Nodaway got it into their end with seven seconds and called timeout to set up a play. But Albany knocked it out of bounds with 3.5 seconds left. North Nodaway got it into Jacquelyn Cline, who drove down the left baseline and put it in as time expired to send the game to overtime tied at 36.

Albany took an early lead in overtime, but then Saylor Brown tied it up at 39 with 1:42 left off a pass from Jadon Dobbins. But then Michaela Martin hit two free throws to put Albany back in front 41-39 with 1:31 left. North Nodaway missed a 3-pointer and turned it over on their next two possessions, and then Emily Poppa hit two free throws with 40 seconds left to make it two possessions at 43-39.

Saylor Brown hit a free throw to make it 43-40, but then Newman seemingly salted it away at 45-40 with 14 seconds left. But then Jacquelyn Cline hit two free throws with 9.3 seconds left to make it 45-42 and Albany stepped on the line inbounding the ball, and North Nodaway had a glimmer of hope. But then they threw it away and then Emily Poppa hit another free throw to make it two possessions with four seconds to seal the game.

Obituary -- Olin Charles "Charlie" Richardson 1929-2020

Olin Charles Richardson, known to his friends and family as Charlie, passed away at the age of 91, in Maryville Missouri, on February 18, 2020. This red-headed boy was born to Olin Fleming and Roxie Anis (Bowen) Richardson in the family farmhouse of his paternal grandparents north of Hatfield, Missouri on the 16th day of February 1929.

Charlie grew up in a tightly bonded family, surrounded by many beloved cousins, friends and neighbors. He attended the Long Branch Country School with his 3 older sisters, Ava, Roberta and Helen.  After graduating from Hatfield High School in 1947, Charlie spent some time in Oregon working in the logging industry as a log driver. Later, he joined his Uncle as a house and building mover in the Ringold and Decatur County Iowa area.

In 1951 Charlie enlisted and proudly served his country in the Korean War - 353rd Transportation Fifth Army. Returning from duty in 1953, Charlie joined his father in farming. He was often reported driving too fast down the country roads in his 57 Retractable Hardtop or seen on his stallion Hobo Reed, roping or participating in Pony Express reenactments.

In 1964 Charlie married Winifred (Roberts), a beautiful English lady from Liverpool. Together, they raised 3 strong farm-fed kids:  Jamie, Lisa and David.

As a cowboy wearing a Stetson or a farmer in a Pioneer Seed Corn hat, Charlie was a diligent steward of the soil for 40 years. Raising Charolais cattle, corn and soybeans - owning a few too many Quarter horses and coon dogs - he worked hard; his boots told the stories of the fence lines walked, the tractor pedals pushed, the rush to help a distressed calf and more than enough cuss words muttered at stubborn cows. Hunting was a sport that kept his legs strong after long days running the combine; he was a sharpshooter, with an eye for a big buck in the brush or a raccoon in a tree.

Charlie loved pie, the Celtics, Cardinals, croquet, cribbage, and Winnie's homemade ice cream. He liked telling stories with fellow neighbors at the Hatfield Station, and numerous other coffee hangouts. Following retirement, Charlie and Winnie enjoyed the next 22 years on the road, traveling the United States. Casa Grande, AZ, became their winter home and Bethany their summer - cultivating many new friendships along the way.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother Roland Richardson (infant); sisters Ava Lloyd, Roberta Parsons and Helen Arkoff; brothers-in-law Leo Lloyd and Gerald Parsons.

Charlie is survived by his wife Winnie; his children, James McBroom (Jeanie), Eagleville, Lisa Macali (Al), Maryville, David Richardson, LeHigh Acres, FL; his grandchildren, Christopher McBroom, Melissa Henggeler, Kyle Macali, Ian Macali, Lauren Macali; 3 great grandchildren; his nieces, nephew, and cousins; sister-in-law, Patricia Bjorland; brothers-in-law, Harold Arkoff and Ron Bjorland.

Charlie lived a simple life of Christian values, he was full of pride in his family, and devoted to caring for his wife. His family will miss his ornery spirit, and forever remember him with "Impudence and Dignity" and a buckeye in his pocket.

Charlie has been cremated under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany, MO.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date. He will be inurned at Payne Cemetery, Hatfield, where four generations of ancestors rest.  Memorial contributions may be made to Payne Cemetery, Lamoni Pubic Library and/or the Bethany Public Library in care of Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 46, Bethany, MO 64424.  Online condolences may be left at www.robersonfuneralhome.com.

Shamrock Boys Race Past Worth County

North Harrison’s boys raced past Worth County 82-50 last Tuesday to spoil their Senior Night. The Shamrocks scored early and often in the game, turning back a Worth County rally in the second quarter before putting the game out of reach in the third quarter. This game marks the second time the Tigers have struggled in back to back games; they lost to Princeton 78-36 on the second of back to back games earlier this year.

Playing in their last home games as Tigers were Jaxon Anderson, Bob Baker, Hayden Holmes, and Zayne Swope.

Both teams started off hot, scoring six points in the first 2:32 of the game. But then Kaden Koch got a three point play which seemed to spark the Shamrocks and make it 9-6. Aydan Gladstone cut it to 9-8, but then Brett Emig hit from the high post, Koch struck again, and Brett Emig scored in transition to make it 15-8 with 3:30 left in the quarter. Koch continued to carry the Shamrocks on his back throughout the first quarter, getting 13 points in the period as North Harrison led 21-12.

Last year, North Harrison led much of the way in Eagleville before Worth County used a big third quarter to pull in front and lead for the rest of the game. It looked like something similar might happen as Alex Rinehart hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key and added a transition basket to make it 21-17 to start the second. Wade Briggs hit a 3-pointer and Brett Emig added a free throw to make it 25-17, but then Aydan Gladstone kicked it out to Jackson Runde for three and Aydan Gladstone scored from the baseline to make it 25-22 at the 5:13 mark.

But then North Harrison responded with back to back jacks as Cruz Ury skipped one to Brett Emig for three, Kaden Koch kicked one out to Steven Willhite for another three, and Brett Emig added a steal, and North Harrison was back up double digits at 33-22 with 4:25 left. North Harrison continued to pull away for the remainder of the first half, leading 43-29 at the break, beating Worth County up and down the floor at will.

The Shamrocks continued to pull away in the third quarter as the bottom dropped out for Worth County. They started the period on a 16-2 run, and by the time the dust had settled just 4:08 into the period, North Harrison was in front 59-31. Willhite had 8 points in the period and Koch added another 7 as the Shamrocks led 64-35 after three.

Alex Rinehart had 19 for Worth County after getting 34 the previous night. Jackson Runde had 15, Aydan Gladstone 12, and Jaxon Anderson and Zayne Swope each with 2.

Jaxon Anderson and Aydan Gladstone had 4 boards each. Jackson Runde and Zayne Swope had 3, Bob Baker 2, and Alex Rinehart, Grant Cameron, and Jackson Smith had 1 each.

Aydan Gladstone had 6 assists for the Tigers. Jackson Runde and Grant Cameron had 4, Jackson Smith 2, and Jaxon Anderson, Alex Rinehart, and Zayne Swope 1. If there was any silver lining for the Tigers, it was the emergence of Aydan Gladstone as a force in the high post; he was passing it out of there at will to set up the rest of the players. He had nine the night before, against Pattonsburg.

Jaxon Anderson had 4 tips for the Tigers. Alex Rinehart had 3, and Aydan Gladstone and Jackson Runde 1. Jackson Runde had 2 steals, while Jackson Smith, Grant Cameron, and Alex Rinehart had 1. Alex Rinehart had 2 blocks.

North Harrison had three players score over 20 in their win. Kaden Koch had 28, Brett Emig 26, Steven Willhite 23, Wade Briggs 3, and Hunter Parkhurst 2.

The lopsided rebounding margin for North Harrison fueled their scoring outbursts, as they had a 36-19 rebounding margin over Worth County. Kaden Koch had 12, Brett Emig 10, Steven Willhite 6, Wade Briggs 4, Nick Babinski 2, and Hunter Parkhurst and Matthew Heintz 1 each.

Hunter Parkhurst had 7 assists. Steven Willhite and Brett Emig had 6, Wade Briggs and Kaden Koch had 3, and Cruz Ury 1.

Hunter Parkhurst, Wade Briggs, and Steven Willhite had 1 tip each.

Kaden Koch had 3 steals. Wade Briggs had 2, while Brett Emig, Hunter Parkhurst, Cruz Ury, and Steven Willhite had 1.

Tiger Boys Fall Short in Wild Overtime Game

Worth County’s boys fell short in a wild overtime game, falling to Pattonsburg 85-79 last Monday.
It looked like a long game at first, as Carter Crone scored from inside, Zane Reed scored six points, and Patrick Cowley scored from inside as Pattonsburg opened the game on a 10-2 run. But then Alex Rinehart shot the Tigers back into the game, scoring 11 points in the final 4:12 as they fought back to trail 16-13 after one.

Grant Cameron got loose in transition and added a pair of free throws to put Worth County on top 17-16 at the 6:36 mark. Pattonsburg moved back in front 25-21 at the four minute mark of the second, but then Jaxon Anderson took a charge on defense, and that seemed to spark the Tigers for the remainder of the half. Alex Rinehart scored nine points in the final 2:06 of the half, while Aydan Gladstone added an inside shot as the Tigers regained the lead and went up 32-27 at the half.
Zane Reed got the hot hand again for Pattonsburg, scoring the first eight points of the third for the Panthers, and Carter Crone added a free throw to put his team up 36-32. But then Aydan Gladstone converted a three point play, and Alex Rinehart once again closed out the third strong, getting seven in the final 4:25 as the Tigers went back in front.

Jaxon Anderson put the Tigers in front by as much as 44-37 with 1:35 left in the third, but then Dylan McCrary hit a 3-pointer and Zane Reed hit two as the Panthers got it down to 48-46 early in the fourth and erased the lead by the 6:09 mark of the game behind a Cowley triple to go up 52-51.

Jackson Runde’s 3-pointer put the Tigers back in front 58-54, but then turnovers cost them as Pattonsburg stole the ball twice and moved back in front 59-58 after Carter Crone’s 3-point play.
Carter Crone scored off a drive with 1:51 left to make it 61-58, but then Grant Cameron tied it right back up again with a 3-pointer. But after Cowley hit two free throws with 1:24 left, Worth County couldn’t answer, and Cowley made it two possessions with two free throws with 41 seconds left, as Worth County was forced to foul.

But after Jackson Runde missed a 3-pointer, Jaxon Anderson stole the ensuing outlet pass with 17 seconds left and Anderson hit a 3-pointer on the left side off a pass from Alex Rinehart with 10.2 seconds left to make it 65-64.

Zane Reed only made one out of two to make it 66-64 to leave the barn door open, and Worth County took advantage. Jaxon Anderson drove the middle of the line and dished off to Jackson Smith after Pattonsburg helped out on defense. Smith’s five-footer was in and out, but Anderson got the putback at the buzzer to tie it at 66 and send it to overtime.

But this time, Zane Reed hit a 3-pointer, Worth County lost Cowley on defense, and Dakota Eaton hit two free throws to make it 73-66, and Pattonsburg was able to hit their free throws down the stretch the rest of the way.

Alex Rinehart did all he could for the Tigers, getting 34 points. Jaxon Anderson had 16, Aydan Gladstone 14, Grant Cameron 7, Jackson Runde 6, and Jackson Smith 2.

Alex Rinehart had 3 blocks and Jaxon Anderson had 1.

Jaxon Anderson had 11 boards. Aydan Gladstone had 7, Alex Rinehart 6, Jackson Runde and Grant Cameron 5, and Jackson Smith 1.

Aydan Gladstone had 9 assists. Jackson Runde had 8, Jaxon Anderson and Alex Rinehart 2, and Grant Cameron 1.

Tiger Girls Turn Back North Harrison on Senior Night 56-46

Worth County’s girls turned back North Harrison 56-46 Tuesday to win their Senior Night and weather a stretch of three games in four nights.

The Tigers took an early 5-0 lead as Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer from the left wing and Anna Gladstone scored off a drive as Kaylee McElvain supplied both of the assists.

But then, North Harrison started driving to the basket at will, as Emma Craig picked up eight points in the first period. Jayliegh Robins scored off a drive, and Emma posted up inside and finished and then got loose in transition to put the green shirts up 6-5.

Kaylee McElvain hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key off a kickout from Anna Gladstone and added a baseline shot to make it 10-6. But then Emma Craig scored off a drive and Jayliegh Robins got a putback that she converted into a three point play to make it 11-10.

Kristin New then picked up her third foul, and sat for the rest of the half. Jill Hardy scored in transition after Kaylee McElvain aired it out to her, but then Camden Castleberry hit a backdoor shot and Emma Craig got yet another drive to put the Shamrocks up 15-12. Worth County, which had been pretty good about not fouling since their loss to East Atchison, fell back into their habit of fouling, as the foul differential was 7-1 in North Harrison’s favor. The rebounding margin was lopsided in North Harrison’s favor as well.

Worth County switched to their 1-3-1 trapping zone, but at first, nothing worked as Emma Craig’s putback put the Shamrocks up 18-14 at the 4:25 mark. But then, Worth County began to find their footing as Anna Gladstone scored off a Merrideth Spiers steal, Jill Hardy added a free throw, and Regan Allee got a putback, cleaning up after her own miss to put the Tigers up 19-18.

Despite North Harrison entering the double bonus, Worth County went ahead 22-20 after Jill Hardy’s 3-pointer before North Harrison fought back to tie it at 22 and 24 at the half.

But then three factors swung the game back in Worth County’s favor. First, Kristin New came back and didn’t pick up another foul. The second factor was improved rebounding; the Tigers evened out the rebounding in the second half after having a big deficit in the first half. The third was the turnover battle; Worth County was able to force 21 turnovers while surrendering the ball only 12 times.

Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Megan Cassavaugh and Anna Gladstone got a steal in which she walked the tightrope down the right side and crossed over to the left to finish. North Harrison tried to make a stand, as Camden Castleberry and Emma Craig scored off drives to keep it close, down 31-28. But then Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer and Anna got a tip and steal, leaving one of the Shamrocks sprawled on the floor as she took it in to make it 36-28. All this happened in just a span of three minutes.

But just as it looked like Worth County might put together a 37 point third quarter like they did against Braymer last year, or a 35 point third quarter like they did against King City last year, Anna Gladstone picked up her third foul as she and Kami Gibson were scrambling for a loose ball. Kaylee McElvain then hit a 3-pointer to make it 39-28, but then Camden Castleberry answered right back to make it 39-31. From there on out, although Worth County was in control, North Harrison would always come up with a timely 3-pointer to keep things interesting.

Once again, Worth County threatened to pull away late in the third as Kristin New scored off a Regan Allee steal as Kristin got a tip; Regan added a 3-pointer from the right side off a pass from Merrideth Spiers to make it 47-33. But then Sara Clawson hit the first of her two 3-pointers to break the momentum.

Kristin New hit two free throws at the end of the third to put Worth County in front 49-36, but then North Harrison started getting to the rim as Emma Craig and Kami Gibson started getting on the line and getting free throws. The Tiger lead got down to ten at 53-43 at the five minute mark before Regan Allee hit a free throw and Kristin New added a putback to make it 56-43. Sara Clawson countered with a 3-pointer with 1:47 left, but then Worth County was able to run out the clock from there and North Harrison could not get any closer.

For Worth County, Regan Allee had 22, Anna Gladstone and Kaylee McElvain 10 each, Jill Hardy and Kristin New 6 each, and Merrideth Spiers 2.

Regan Allee had 7 boards. Kaylee McElvain had 5, Anna Gladstone 4, Merrideth Spiers 3, Jill Hardy and Kristin New 2, and Megan Cassavaugh 1.

Anna Gladstone and Kristin New had 5 assists. Megan Cassavaugh and Merrideth Spiers had 3, while Kaylee McElvain and Regan Allee had 2 each.

Anna Gladstone had 7 tips. Regan Allee had 4, Kristin New and Merrideth Spiers 3 each, Jill Hardy and Megan Cassavaugh 2, and Kaylee McElvain 1.

Anna Gladstone had 5 steals. Regan Allee had 4, Kaylee McElvain 3, Megan Cassavaugh, Jill Hardy, and Kristin New 2, and Merrideth Spiers 1.

For North Harrison, Emma Craig had 18, Jayliegh Robins and Camden Castleberry 7 each, Sara Clawson 6, and Kami Gibson and Rainey Fordyce 4 each.

Emma Craig had 11 boards to complete a double double. Kami Gibson had 4, Camden Castleberry, Jayliegh Robins, and Rainey Fordyce had 3, and Sara Clawson had 1.

Camden Castleberry had 4 assists. Kami Gibson and Jayliegh Robins had 3, Emma Craig 2, and Sara Clawson 1. Jayliegh Robins had 3 tips and Camden Castleberry had 2. Jayliegh Robins and Camden Castleberry had 2 steals each, while Sara Clawson, Rainey Fordyce, Emma Craig, and Kami Gibson all had 1.

Playing in their last home games as Tigers were Merrideth Spiers, Anna Gladstone, Regan Allee, Kristin New, and Kaylee McElvain. Jenna Smith, who was out with a shoulder injury, was also honored.

Tiger Girls Weather Frantic Rally to Clinch GRC West

Worth County’s girls built up a 35 point lead midway through the third quarter, then had to weather a frantic Pattonsburg rally to clinch the GRC West last Monday with a 73-62 win. Worth County had previously won the GRC Showcase Title the Saturday before over Milan, but their GRC West matchup against Pattonsburg had gone unplayed due to inclement weather. A win by Pattonsburg would have handed the GRC West title to Stanberry, since Worth County would have had two conference losses. As it played out, Worth County shared the title with Stanberry, since both finished with one conference loss.

The game represented one of the highest point totals for the Tigers. They previously put up 76 points in a 76-56 win over Princeton back in 2017, when the current seniors were freshmen and made their first varsity debut, in the first game played in the renovated gym at Worth County. The Tigers subsequently scored 76 in Thursday’s 76-39 win over Maysville as well.

The two teams started out red hot, with Worth County holding a 7-6 lead over the Panthers at the 5:50 mark. But then Worth County started pulling away, as they scored the next 12 points. Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Megan Cassavaugh, Kaylee McElvain hit three free throws, Anna Gladstone added a steal and a drive, and Regan Allee scored off a drive to make it 19-6 at the 3:11 mark. The Tigers pulled away to a 27-13 lead after one.

Worth County continued to pull away in the second quarter as Anna Gladstone cleaned up off a miss in transition to start the period. Grace Warner countered with a free throw for the green shirts, but Anna got another putback, Kristin New scored two free throws, Regan Allee added a steal, and Anna Gladstone added a three point play to make it 38-14.

Warner and the Panthers made a stand for the next minute, but then Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run for the Tigers at the 2:54 mark. Anna Gladstone scored off a Regan Allee steal, Regan scored a drive down the left baseline, and Anna Gladstone scored off a drive with 1:34 left to make it 51-18. Pattonsburg scored the next four points before Regan Allee hit a free throw to make it 52-22 at the half.

The lead grew to as big as 35 twice in the third quarter as Regan Allee had the hot hand and Jill Hardy added five points. But Worth County started putting their subs in after the score got to 62-27; however, Pattonsburg was not ready to throw in the towel. All of a sudden, Jill Plymell, who had missed a ton of 3-point attempts during the first two and a half quarters, suddenly heated up and knocked off five 3-pointers in a span of just over four minutes during the latter part of the third quarter and the start of the fourth. When the dust was settled, the lead was down to 68-52 at the 4:47 mark of the fourth, and Worth County had to put their starters back in. The Panthers continued to make a charge, getting to the line at will in the latter stages before Worth County was finally able to run out the clock in the last two minutes to get the win.

Regan Allee had 26 points for Worth County. Anna Gladstone had 22, Kaylee McElvain 9, Jill Hardy 8, Merrideth Spiers 6, and Kristin New 2.

Regan Allee had 8 rebounds. Anna Gladstone had 7, EmiLee Brown 5, Jill Hardy and Kristin New 4, and Merrideth Spiers and Megan Cassavaugh 1 each.

Kristin New had 10 assists. Megan Cassavaugh had 5, Anna Gladstone and Regan Allee 3 each, Jill Hardy 2, and Kaylee McElvain and EmiLee Brown 1.

Kristin New had 7 tips. Regan Allee and Jill Hardy had 5, Anna Gladstone  and Megan Cassavaugh 3, and Kaylee McElvain 1.

Regan Allee had 5 steals. Anna Gladstone and Megan Cassavaugh had 4, while Kristin New, Jill Hardy, and Kaylee McElvain had 1.

Tiger Girls Recover from Slow Start to Beat Mustangs; Pull Away for 55-36 Win

Worth County’s girls got off to a slow start, but then recovered to get a 55-36 win over North Nodaway Thursday. It turned out to be the perfect tuneup for the Milan game, as everything else had been called off.

For North Nodaway, Jacquelyn Cline and Saylor Brown had the hot hand early as they raced out to an early 9-2 lead. Cline got loose in transition and got a pass from Karissa Oberhauser, added a 3-pointer from the left wing, and Saylor got loose in transition after a Jadon Dobbins steal as the Mustangs broke a 2-2 tie.

Megan Cassavaugh hit back to back threes for Worth County, and just like that, they were right back in the game down 9-8. Jacquelyn Cline countered with a 3-pointer to put the Mustangs back in front 12-8 after one.

But just like that, Worth County turned to its 1-3-1 trapping defense, and a totally different ballgame ensued. Jill Hardy got a free throw, and then Jenna Smith got a tip and Jill pushed ahead to Anna for the finish. Kaylee McElvain got a high-low pass into Anna to put the Tigers in front, Anna got behind the defense after a Regan Allee steal, Anna got a steal of her own, Regan Allee got a drive, and Kristin New added yet another steal for the Tigers. When the dust had settled, they had held North Nodaway scoreless and had erased their early deficit to take a 21-12 lead at the half. North Nodaway got some good looks at the basket, but nothing fell in that period.

But unlike their 59-31 loss to Platte Valley, in which North Nodaway had continued to fade after a similar collapse in the second quarter, they recovered to make a game out of it for a while. Anna Gladstone’s putback made it double digits at 23-12, but then Saylor Brown cleaned up after a steal and Jadon Dobbins added a 3-pointer after a pass from Karissa Oberhauser to put them right back in it, down 23-17.

Anna Gladstone picked up her third foul, and the Mustangs kept coming again as Jadon Dobbins answered a Kristin New tally with a free throw and Ellaina Renfro got a putback to make it five at 25-20. Despite Anna being on the bench with foul trouble, Worth County restored order for the time being as Kristin New scored off a drive and Jill Hardy hit a 3-pointer to make it 32-22 before Kelsi Barcus hit from the left side to make it 32-24 going into the fourth.

But with North Nodaway threatening to duplicate East Atchison’s lead by erasing a Tiger lead in the fourth quarter, Regan Allee carried the team on her shoulders for Worth County, getting the first eight points of the fourth, driving and getting to the free throw line at will. The Tigers bent, but didn’t break against North Nodaway’s charges as they got it down to seven twice, but no closer. Finally, Anna Gladstone scored from inside off a pass from Kristin New and finished after an Allee steal after Anna got a tip to put Worth County up 44-33.

The teams traded blows over the next minute, but then Kaylee McElvain and Anna Gladstone scored off drives, Anna scored off a Kristin New steal, and Regan Allee scored off an Anna Gladstone steal as Worth County finished the game with an 8-0 run.
