Obituary -- Chris Kelly 1976-2018

Christopher Lynn Kelly, 42, of Union Star, Missouri, passed away December 29, 2018 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.  Chris was born March 12, 1976 in St. Joseph.

He worked as a production manager for New Century Packaging in Lenexa, Kansas.

On July 19, 2003, he married Amanda Marie Stewart. She survives of the home.

Also surviving, son, Colby Kelly; daughters, Krystal Kelly; Raya Kelly; grandchildren, Remadie and Harmonie Kelly, Lucas Brumley; mother and step-father, Carroll and Dorlan Arthur; father & step-mother, August & Linda Kelly; grandmother, Judy Wood; half-sister, Laura (Joseph) Hilleman; half-brothers, Dustin Kelly; Cody (Niki) Kelly; step-sisters, Lisa Arthur; Rhodera Ackley; Rhonda Stuart; step-brother, Shawn Livingston; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Friday, January 4 at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany with burial in the High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the chapel, where friends may call anytime after noon on Friday. Obituary -- Doug Craig 1960-2018

Doug Craig, 58, Eagleville, MO passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018 at a Bethany, MO hospital.
He was born September 30, 1960 the son of George Alan and Lois Ann (Groom) Craig in Bethany, MO.

Doug worked as a welder in the area.

He was preceded in death by his mother and brother, James Dwight Craig.

Survivors include his two sons, Aaron (Crystal) Craig, Kansas City, MO and Matthew Craig, Ridgeway, MO; father, George Alan (Donna) Craig, Ridgeway, MO; a living sister and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at Roberson Funeral Home, Eagleville, MO. Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery, Eagleville, MO. Obituary -- Norma Stites 1937-2018

Norma R. Stites, 81, of Hopkins, Missouri passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Parkdale Manor in Maryville.

Norma was born on January 17, 1937 in Hopkins, Missouri to George R. and Pearly M. (Logan) DeMott. She was a graduate of Hopkins High School. Norma was a member of the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star Rosanna Chapter 262 for over 50 years and the Elks Club.

She worked as a school secretary and later the Hopkins State Bank and was the bookkeeper of Stites Oil Company.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ronald DeMott and one sister, Delores Motsinger.

She married Byron Stites on July 17, 1956 in Hopkins, Missouri. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include daughter, Tina West (David Nisley); son, Todd (Mary Jane) Stites; four grandchildren, Casey (Jenna) West, Logan (Kara) West and Shelby and Madison Stites; four great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Layne, Stella and Austin and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stites has been cremated under the care of Price Funeral Home. Graveside Services 11 am Thursday, January 3rd at the Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins, Missouri. Ethanol Truck Wrecks North of Hopkins

An ethanol truck wrecked north of Hopkins two miles into Iowa. On Thursday morning, a 2018 Peterbilt Semi-Tractor owned by Big Star Trucking driven by Robert Tuffin (65) of Kansas City was southbound on Highway 148 at around 2:08 am when its lights went out and the driver veered off the east side of the road. Tuffin was able to come to a controlled stop, but then the weight of the truck on an embankment caused it to flip over on its side. Tuffin was not injured in the accident. The road was closed until Thursday morning at around 9:30 am, as crews worked to remove the truck and get the ethanol into another truck.

Obituary -- Fred Mares 1958-2018

Frederick L. Mares of Maryville, Missouri, passed away on December 20, 2018 at Village Care Center. Fred was born on October 15, 1958, in Denver, Colorado to Boniface (“Bonnie”) and Priscilla S. Mares. Fred attended Drake University on a tennis scholarship, graduating in 1980 with a degree in journalism. Fred loved the people of the Midwest and made it his home following college.

Fred was a long-time reporter for the Kansas City Star/Times, serving as Bureau Chief in St. Joseph. Fred and his fellow reporters won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the 1981 Hyatt Regency walkway collapse.

Fred came to Maryville to seek his master’s degree at Northwest Missouri State, wanting to become a teacher or professor. He often spoke publicly about his mental health challenges, which sidelined him from pursuing his degree. His beloved Hy-Vee brought him into their family where everyone knows Fred held court as a greeter-extraordinaire for many years, winning a Hy-Vee Legendary Customer Service award. Fred loved sharing his joy of music, singing and playing at churches, weddings and funerals throughout Nodaway County.

Fred is survived by his brothers Steve, Adolph and Don and many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. He remained very close to his former wife and good friend Eulia Mares and loved his step-children Lisa and Jeff and their children and grandchildren, who he considered his own children grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services 1 PM Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Church of the Nazarene under the care of Price Funeral Home. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Shamrock Girls Hold Off King City as Emma Craig Posts 21 Points

North Harrison held off King City and won 42-34 Monday, December 17th as Emma Craig posted 21 points and the Shamrocks held off several Wildkat charges. King City came into the game only having won one game, but they were in all their games but their second game of the year, when they were buried by Princeton.

Victoria Washburn hit from the high post to put King City up 4-2 at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter, but Emma Craig’s three-point play and Mason Cracraft’s drive made it 7-4 in favor of the Shamrocks. Emma Craig hit Rainey Fordyce backdoor to put North Harrison up 11-7 after one.

Kami Gibson got a putback, Olivia Babinski hit Emma Craig inside, and Babinski hit Ashlynn Gilpatrick to make it 18-7 at the 4:51 mark of the second. But then King City switched to a diamond and one on Emma Craig. At first, nothing worked as North Harrison turned back a quick spurt from King City with back to back inside shots from Addie Slaughter to make it 22-11 again. But then Brynan Tunks got the hot hand late in the half, Emma Craig picked up her second foul, and Washburn added a drive to make it 22-17 at halftime.

North Harrison built the lead back up to nine again as Emma Craig started scoring again despite the diamond and one, hitting two free throws after a loose ball recovery, driving after getting a pass from Addie Slaughter, and getting a putback to make it 30-21. But then King City started frantically pressing and pressing after a miss as they got a layup and then Madeline Saunders hit a three at the buzzer after North Harrison tried to hold it for the last shot, but King City got a steal to make it 30-26.

Things got chippy in the fourth quarter. Rainey Fordyce hit Mason Cracraft inside to restore order; then, after being whistled for a foul while trying to trap one of North Harrison’s guards, Washburn slammed the ball down and got a technical foul, sitting for the rest of the game and taking away one of their leading scorers. Emma Craig hit both technical shots to make it 34-26 with 6:48 left.

King City kept coming as Chloe Eiberger got a putback; then, Tunks started driving at will to get her team back into the game. The Wildkats got back to within 36-33, but then, Kami Gibson and Chloe Eiberger got tangled up going after a rebound and Eiberger was whistled for a foul, while Gibson was whistled for a technical. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise for North Harrison with 2:02 left, as Gibson made both her free throws, while Eiberger only made one out of two to make it a two possession lead for North Harrison at 38-34.

King City got the ball back after the technical and had a long possession, taking nearly a minute off the clock as they could not find an opening against North Harrison’s defense. Finally, Tunks got on the line with 1:08 left in the game but missed both free throws. North Harrison converted on the other end as Olivia Babinski hit Emma Craig to make it 40-34 and King City threw it away on their ensuing possession. Olivia Babinski hit a free throw with 36 seconds left, Addie Slaughter got the offensive board, and hit another with 32.7 seconds left to clinch the game.

Logan Craig Scores 30, Gets 1,000th Point as Shamrock Boys Survive 40 Point Outburst from Collin Breckenridge

North Harrison’s Shamrocks overcame a 40 point outburst from Collin Breckenridge and held off King City 77-66 last Monday. It was one of the best scoring duels the area has seen, with Logan Craig getting 30 points and surpassing his 1000th point.

It looked easy at first, as Logan Craig hit a free throw, Brett Emig scored off a pair of consecutive steals, and Logan Craig hit a pair of free throws and Emig hit him in transition to make it 8-0.
But then King City started fighting back after Steven Willhite picked up his second foul at the 4:26 mark, as Breckenridge scored four out of his team’s seven point to bring his team back to within 10-7. The Wildkats fought to tie it up after Landon Wells’ steal at 15, but then Logan Craig drove down the left baseline to put North Harrison back in front 17-15 after one.

North Harrison threatened to pull away again after Steven Willhite’s three made it 22-17 at the 6:53 mark. But then Breckenridge scored three straight at the line to bring it back to within 22-20. Willhite then countered with three straight 3-pointers to put North Harrison up double digits at 31-20 at the 4:51 mark, prompting King City’s first timeout. The scoring avalanche continued for North Harrison as Brett Emig’s drive off a pass from Collin Briggs and a pair of free throws from Logan Craig after Logan Huitt kept a possession alive with an offensive board and Collin Briggs got him the ball made it 36-22 at the 2:46 mark of the first half. North Harrison went into the lockerroom up 40-27.

King City kept it between 11 and 14 for the first two minutes of the third quarter, but then Brett Emig and Logan Craig scored off drives and Steven Willhite scored off a steal to push it to 17 at 49-32 with 4:41 left. Breckenridge hit a guarded three, but Logan Craig countered with an inside shot off a pass from Brett Emig and had a chance for a three point play. He missed, but Steven Willhite’s fourth chance putback made it 53-35.

Logan Craig’s inside shot with 2:11 left made it 57-37, but then the fouls started racking up for North Harrison, as Logan Craig, Brett Emig, and Steven Willhite all picked up their third foul. Breckenridge scored five of his team’s next seven points to make it 57-44 going into the fourth quarter.

Craig got loose in transition off a pass from Steven Willhite to restore order, putting North Harrison up 62-46. But Breckenridge was just getting started; Brett Emig and Steven Willhite picked up their fourth as Collin got a three point play, two free throws, and a 3-pointer to make it a game again at 65-56 with 3:13 left, still plenty of time.

Logan Huitt got two free throws with 3:05 left; Breckenridge countered with a fast break to make it nine again, but Logan Craig hit a free throw and Brett Emig kept the miss alive and got it to Steven Willhite. Grant Claycomb got loose in transition and Gavin Garrett got him the ball to make it 72-58 with 2:24 left.

The teams continued to trade blows as Breckenridge hit two free throws and scored off a drive, and Cameron Simerly scored off Collin’s steal to get it under double digits again at 73-64 with 1:10 left. But Brett Emig scored off a free throw, North Harrison got a stop, and Logan Craig’s outlet to Brett Emig turned into a layup from Gavin Garrett on the other end to make it 76-64. Grant Claycomb’s free throw made it 77-64 before Breckenridge scored a basket at the end to put his point total at 40. Breckenridge had scored 18 of his team’s 22 points in the fourth quarter.

For North Harrison, their three-headed monster of Logan Craig, Brett Emig, and Steven Willhite all came up big; Craig had 30, while Willhite had 19 and Emig 17. Logan Huitt and Grant Claycomb had 4, Gavin Garrett 2, and Collin Briggs had 1.

North Harrison had two players with double figures in rebounding. Logan Craig had 12 boards, Steven Willhite 10, Brett Emig 5, Logan Huitt 3, Gaven Garrett 2, and Grant Claycomb 1.

North Harrison had 29 assists for the game, as it was their ball movement which saved them against King City. Brett Emig had 9 assists, Collin Briggs and Logan Huitt had 4, Gavin Garrett, Steven Willhite, and Grant Claycomb had 3, Logan Craig had 2, and Wade Briggs had 1. Collin, who had been playing well in the JV games, getting much more confident with his shot, earned a lot of varsity minutes last week.

Obituary -- Thomas John Key 1950-2018

Thomas John Key, 68, Maryville, Missouri died Monday, December 24, 2018, at his home in Maryville.

He was born March 31, 1950 in San Jose, California, the son of Marshall and Lorraine Munson Key. Tom and Donna Marie Seipel were married in Maryville December 9, 1988.

Tom was a veteran of the US Air Force and had worked as a welder for H & H Trailers.

Surviving Tom is his wife, Donna and children: Kevin (Angie) Kelmel, Barnard, MO, Michel (Ed Archer) Kelmel, St. Joseph, MO, Kim Kelmel, Maryville, MO, Heather (J. Boles) Dredge, Maryville, MO and Angela (Ryan) Cummins, Kansas City, MO; siblings: Larry Key, Oakdale, CA; Taylor Key, Jackson, CA; Dwayne Smallwood; Ogden, Ut; Tim Phillips, Hopkins, MO: and Marie Jewell, Linden, CA and several grand and great-grandchildren.

Tiger Girls Win Cliffhanger, Bring Down Stanberry

Worth County’s girls turned around their season in a three game stretch that included wins over St. Joseph Christian, Mount Ayr, and a 31-30 win Stanberry Thursday. The Tigers were at a low point following their heartbreaking 40-37 loss to North Andrew. They were in the throes of a three-game losing streak which was started by Stanberry. Every time, something different went wrong; against Stanberry, they couldn’t take care of the ball, throwing it away 27 times. Against Maryville, they couldn’t buy a board, losing 46-36 despite holding Serena Sundell to 24 points. And against North Andrew, they couldn’t hit a free throw, only going 10 for 23 from the line.

But they righted themselves with a balanced effort against Christian, taking a 60-36 win. They dug themselves into a 26-13 hole against Mount Ayr early in the second quarter Tuesday. The Raiderettes, which are a powerhouse team, got off to a slow start, dropping their first two games, but had righted their ship, winning their last three.

But all of a sudden, Worth County realized they could play basketball with their Class 2 rivals and got the deficit down to 32-30 at the half. The Tigers completely outplayed Mount Ayr in the second half, hit plenty of shots, and got ahead by as much as 17 before fending off a comeback bid to win 64-55. Regan Allee had 19, Kristin New 17, Anna Gladstone 15, Jessi Badell 8, Jenna Smith 3, and Kaylee McElvain 2. The Tigers finally hit their outside shots with Allee getting four threes, Kristin New three, and Smith one.

That brought them close to the end of their Hell Week – six games against solid teams. The team that started their tailspin was coming into town; Stanberry came in with a record of 8-0 and had not been seriously challenged so far. They were a juggernaut, taking down even solid teams like Mound City, Jefferson, and Mercer and leaving them in their wake. Sure enough, Stanberry started off right where they left off in their 59-38 win over Worth County in the Albany Tournament as Sydney Mattson and Lily Osborn hit back to back threes to erase an early 6-5 Worth County lead and go up 11-6 at the 3:51 mark of the first quarter.

But all of a sudden Worth County, similar to the Mount Ayr game, realized that they could play basketball with Stanberry and started coming back. They took much better care of the ball, surrendering it 16 times Thursday after turning it over 27 times two weeks ago against the same team. Regan Allee threw a long skip to Anna Gladstone, who got on the line and hit two free throws. Madi Sager countered with a steal, but Regan Allee scored off a drive, Anna Gladstone got a putback, and Regan hit Anna Gladstone inside, and she put it in at the buzzer. All of a sudden, Worth County was up 14-13 after one and it was a brand new ballgame.

It looked like Worth County would take control after Anna Gladstone hit two free throws off a steal and scored from inside off a pass from Kaylee McElvain to make it 18-15 with 6:25 left. But then she picked up her third foul and sat.

But despite Gladstone sitting on the bench, Worth County did not let up defensively. Time and time again, Stanberry kept trying to get to the rim, and time and time again, Worth County would turn them away, getting eight blocks for the night. It was a war of attrition as the only basket in the last 6:25 was Tyra Grayson’s drive, as the Tigers still held an 18-17 lead at halftime.

The game was knotted at 21 and 23 before finally, Worth County moved in front 27-24 after Anna slashed her way to the rim after a pass from Regan Allee. Stanberry fought back to take the lead as Sydney Mattson cut inside for two free throws and then got a steal to make it 28-27. But then Kaylee McElvain cherry-picked a basket as she was all alone as Anna Gladstone got her the ball before Stanberry could get set in their press and Worth County got a 29-28 lead going into the fourth.

The game turned into a brutal boxing match for the remainder of the game as there were bodies flying all over the floor and nobody could get anything done. The score was stuck at 29-28 until Anna Gladstone finally got loose on a drive with 4:50 left. Ashley Peterson countered inside to make it 31-30, and that was where the score was stuck as Worth County took huge chunks of time running out the clock. Stanberry could afford to be very aggressive on defense, as they only had four team fouls going into the final stretch.

Stanberry finally got what looked to be a golden opportunity with 1:25 left as they executed a perfect pick and roll, but Jessi Badell got the steal to blow it up. But Worth County gave it right back with an offensive foul. Stanberry missed two shots and then used up their fifth and sixth fouls as the Tigers got the clock down to 35 seconds. Madi Sager finally fouled Kaylee McElvain for her fifth foul as Kaylee’s inside shot go in. But Sager had fouled McElvain before she took her shot, so the basket was wiped off and McElvain’s 1-1 with 28 seconds left missed.

Lily Osborn tried to get to the rim to put her team in front, but Anna Gladstone rejected her. After a scramble, Kaylee McElvain got the loose carom and nearly threw it away for a wide open layup, but she was fouled first with 12 seconds left. She missed the one and one, and Stanberry called timeout with nine seconds left to set up a play to try to win the game. There was a heartstopping moment as Lily Osborn got a clear path to the basket for a apparent game-winning layup, which would have drained the clock as the clock keeps going on a made basket. But Kierstyn McMillen was called for a moving screen instead, and Worth County got the ball back with 1.7 seconds left.

Worth County had to inbound the ball underneath the Stanberry basket, and the Bulldogs were playing full court denial defense. But Worth County aired it out to Anna Gladstone at midcourt, and she dribbled out the remaining 1.7 seconds for the victory.

One of the key stats was defensive for the Tigers; they were able to hold Madi Sager to two points for the game as Jessi Badell was able to hold her down. Anna Gladstone, who guarded Sager in the first game, came out and guarded Osborn and Mattson instead; after two initial threes, Stanberry did not hit another one the rest of the game.

Anna Gladstone had 19 points for the Tigers. Kaylee McElvain had 6, Regan Allee 5, and Jessi Badell 1.

Stanberry had been ranked seventh in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s poll, released on December 17th. The Max Preps site had them ranked fifth, with Worth County not even ranked in the top 25.

Shamrock Girls Post Strong Third Quarter to Down Redbirds

North Harrison went into halftime knotted 11-11 with Winston, but used a strong third quarter to get past the Redbirds. They pitched a 10-0 shutout in the period and held their own in the fourth quarter to win 33-21 Thursday.

North Harrison overcame 20 turnovers as Emma Craig got another double double with 16 points and 10 boards. Mason Cracraft and Addie Slaughter had 6 each, Kami Gibson 3, and Camden Castleberry 2. Castleberry saw her first action since getting injured during the first game of the season (ankle).
The Shamrocks shot 39% from the field and were 11 for 21 from the free throw line.

Emma Craig had 10 boards, Kami Gibson 9, Olivia Babinski and Addie Slaughter 6 each, Mason Cracraft 3, Rainey Fordyce and Camden Castleberry 2 each, and Deva Wallace and Ashlynn Gilpatrick had 1 each. Rainey Fordyce had 2 assists, while Mason Cracraft and Emma Craig had 1. Emma Craig had 4 steals. Emma Craig had 2 blocks and Mason Cracraft 1.

The boys did not fare so well as they lost to the powerhouse Winston Redbird team 73-26. Winston is undefeated this year, and has not been seriously challenged since the first game of the year.

Tiger Boys Beat Stanberry in Double Overtime for Third Win

Worth County’s boys survived Stanberry last Thursday to get their third win of the year, beating the Bulldogs 74-68 in double overtime. Against Mount Ayr, they could not stop Dawson Frost, who hung 22 points on the Tigers in Mount Ayr’s 55-43 win Tuesday. Worth County dug themselves into a 21-10 hole after one and couldn’t get out. They had balanced scoring, but not enough of it as Jaxon Anderson had 11, Jacob New and Jackson Runde 8, Caleb Parman 7, Alex Rinehart 5, and Bryant McCord and Aydan Gladstone 2 each.

They came into Thursday’s game against a Stanberry team that had an uncanny ability to win close games. Against Braymer, Stanberry got a steal and a layup at the buzzer to win 45-44 earlier in the season. And against South Harrison in the Albany Tournament, they apparently fell by one point, only for a full court heave by Collin Sager to go in and give Stanberry a 42-40 consolation win over South Harrison.

Neither team could take control in the first quarter as they battled to a 12-12 draw. Jaxon Anderson had six, off a 3-pointer and a conventional three-point play for the Tigers, while Caleb Parman, Jacob New, and Aydan Gladstone each had two. Stanberry countered as each of their sharpshooters, Collin Sager and Tristen Lager, had threes.

Nobody could get any kind of separation in the second until finally, Tristen Lager and Cole Durbin scored off drives to put Stanberry in front 20-16 with 2:40 left. But Jaxon Anderson drove and scored, as did Aydan Gladstone, and Worth County tied it right back up at 20. Stanberry went into the locker with a 23-22 lead.

Stanberry threatened to take control in the third as Durbin’s drive put them in front at 31-26, but Jaxon Anderson’s drive, Jackson Runde’s airout to Jacob New for a layup, and two free throws from New put Worth County back in front 32-31. Durbin scored off a drive to put his team back in front 33-32, but then Jackson Runde started taking over, scoring nine in the last 1:10 of the third to put Worth County back in front 41-36 after three. He scored off a steal, a drive, a triple, and a tipin at the buzzer.

Tristen Lager scored two free throws off a steal right off the bat to start the fourth, but Worth County looked to take control as Runde got loose in transition, Aydan Gladstone hit two free throws, and Gladstone threw up a guarded three that went in to make it 48-38.

But then Stanberry started driving to the basket at will, and finally, they got it to within 50-49, only for Jackson Runde to hit a triple to make it two possessions again at 53-49 with 2:27 left. They extended it to five when Jaxon Anderson got loose in transition, but then Stanberry started driving at will again as Collin Sager and Cole Durbin both got loose to cut it to 57-55 with 26 seconds left.
Caleb Parman missed a one and one after being fouled before Worth County could get it in, but Aydan Gladstone stole a pick and roll pass with 18 seconds to get on the line. He made one out of two to make it 58-55.

It seemed like that would be it after Collin Sager drove the right baseline, tried to skip it to Hunter Johnson, but the ball got lost out of bounds with 8.6 seconds left. But Worth County tried to air it out to Aydan Gladstone with Stanberry playing fullcourt denial defense; he corralled the ball, but lost his footing and traveled with 7.3 seconds left.

Stanberry tried to set up a look from Sager to tie it up, but he was covered by two white shirts. But he kicked it out to Tristen Lager 30 feet away from the basket, and he made it at the buzzer to send it to overtime.

It looked once again like Stanberry would get another crazy win, especially after Cole Durbin scored the first four points of overtime to put Stanberry up 62-58. But Jaxon Anderson’s drive turned into two free throws to keep Worth County in the game. Aydan Gladstone missed a three that would have given Worth County the lead, but Collin Sager’s fourth chance board got him a trip to the line and he hit one of two to make it 63-60 with 44 seconds left.

Caleb Parman hit one of two with 30 seconds left, but Stanberry missed a 1-1 that would have put them two possessions up. Jaxon Anderson drove down the right baseline and his shot tied it up at 63 with 12 seconds left. Stanberry had the last possession, but Jacob New tipped an errant pass away as time expired.

The teams exchanged free throws; then, Collin Sager’s pullup put Stanberry in front 66-64 with 1:55 to start the second overtime. But Jacob New got loose in transition and tied it right back up at 66. Tristen Lager carried the ball for Stanberry with 1:40, and Worth County took advantage, as Aydan Gladstone’s drive put Worth County in front 68-66 with 1:17 left.

Collin Sager missed an off-balance shot, but Tristen Lager stole the ball right back for Stanberry, giving them a chance to tie. But the Bulldogs lost the ball out of bounds. Stanberry once again put on the press, but this time, Jackson Runde got loose in transition and got it to Caleb Parman to make it two possessions at 70-66.

Sager hit two free throws to cut it to 70-68 again, but then was called for an intentional foul after he wrapped up Jackson Runde on the inbounds play with 21 seconds left. Runde hit both free throws to make it 72-68; with the free possession, Caleb Parman added another to make it 73-68. Jaxon Anderson added another free throw with eight seconds left to secure the win.

Jaxon Anderson had a career night for Worth County as he had 25 points. Jackson Runde had 17, another career night while Aydan Gladstone had 14, a third career high. Jacob New had 10, Caleb Parman 6, and Bryant McCord had 2.

On December 18th, Timothy Newton (49) of Lamoni, IA was located at Shopko in Mount Ayr, IA. Newton was arrested by the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department on an outstanding warrant for Driving While Barred. Newton was booked into the Ringgold County Jail and released on bond.

On December 18th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Joseph De La Paz (37) of Maryville alleging No Valid License (2nd Offense) and Failure to Register.

On December 18th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Carrie McLead (43) of Mount Ayr alleging DWI, No Valid License, and Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway.

On December 19th, Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer filed charges against Erin Miller (27) of Ridgeway alleging Tampering with Motor Vehicle (Felony).

On December 19th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Jennifer Bates (32) of Maryville in Nodaway County alleging DWI and Careless & Imprudent Driving.

On December 19th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Patrick Quinlan (51) of Lenexa (KS) in Harrison County on a Saline County Warrant for Speeding. He was also arrested for No Valid License and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was being held in Harrison County on bond.

Jarrod Brown, 34, of Lenox, was arrested on December 19, 2018 in the 600 block of South Walnut St in Lenox by the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office. Brown was involved in an incident at the Lenox City Hall. Brown was charged with disorderly conduct. Brown is being held at the Taylor County Sheriff's Office on $300 bond, until seen by a Magistrate.

Kyle Gile, of Des Moines, was arrested on December 19, 2018 in the 600 block of East Ohio St in Lenox by the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department. He was wanted on an active Adams County Warrant for failure to appear on a probation violation. During the traffic stop, Gile was found to be driving under suspension. Gile was additionally charged with open container. Gile was transported to Adams County for booking.

Richard Haila, 26, of Bedford, was arrested on December 20, 2018 in the 1100 block of Illinois St in Bedford by the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department. Haila was charged with Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury, a class D felony. Haila is being held at the Taylor County Sheriff's Office on $5,000 cash only bond.

On December 20th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Daniella Sivels (34) of St. Paul (MN) in Harrison County alleging she was a fugitive from out of state. She was also charged with Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Speeding 92 miles per hour.

Worth County Student Council Seeks Funds for Digital Sign

The Worth County Student Council is seeking to raise funds to purchase and install a digital sign at 46 and School Bus Road in Grant City. It will promote school as well as community events, similar to the signs in Hopkins and Ravenwood.

The Council is seeking to sell advertising to raise funds. They are offering businesses which donate $1,000 up front the opportunity to advertise for one month each year for five years. The offer may be used in two ways. The business owner could select one month to advertise or four weeks in different months. Either way, students would design your messages and display it at the appropriate times. If $1,000 is not in your budget, please contact any Student Council member for other others.

Send all donations to Worth County R-III Sign Project, % Matt Martz, Superintendent, 510 East Avenue, Grant City, MO 64456. The target date for the installation will be Fall 2019.

The fundraising goal is $30,000. The students and faculty will operate the sign and keep it updated with current events, notices, school/community news, and other information.

Obituary -- Paisley Reid 2018-2018

Paisley Dawn Reid was born at Saint Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri, on September 24, 2018, to her loving mother Destiny Reid and big brother, Liam.

Left to cherish Paisley’s memory are her mother Destiny Reid and her big brother Liam of Bedford; grandparents are Jeremy and Kathy Reid of Bedford; maternal great-grandparents are Dean and Debbie Reid of Conway; and Margaret Smith of Bedford; maternal great-great-grandparent Evelyn Gray of Hopkins, Missouri; Paisley is also survived by her uncle Hunter Reid and great-aunts and great-uncles, Charlene Smith and significant other (Sean Collins), Evelyn (Brad) Vest, Dale (Kirby) Smith, April Reid along with many other cousins, relatives and friends.

Preceding Paisley in death is her great-grandfather Don Smith, great-great-grandparents Lawrence and Marie Jackson and great-great-grandfather Charles Gray.

January 31st Homecoming Set for North Harrison

North Harrison will be holding their Homecoming Game Thursday, January 31st at 6 pm against Mercer. On Monday, January 28th, the school will celebrate ‘Merica Day. Students will dress up in red, white, and blue. On Tuesday, January 29th, students will dress up in pajamas. On Wednesday, January 30th, students will dress in mismatched clothes.

Thursday, January 31st will be Green and White Day. There will be a schoolwide pep assembly at 2:15 that day. At 6 pm, the Homecoming Game against Mercer will start. During the Girls Halftime, the Little Rocks Cheerleaders will perform. During the Boys Halftime, the Varsity Cheerleaders will perform. Coronation will follow the boys game.

On Friday, February 1st, there will be Class Color Day. The following colors will be worn by students – Early Childhood Center: Red; 1st Grade: Orange; 2nd Grade: Yellow; 3rd Grade: Purple; 4th Grade: Black; 5th Grade: White; 6th Grade: Pink; 7th Grade: Blue; 8th Grade: Black; 9th Grade: Green; 10th Grade: Orange; 11th Grade: Red; 12th Grade: Pink.

On the evening of Friday, February 1st, there will be a Junior High and High School Dance starting at 6:30 pm and ending at 7:45 pm. It will be in the High School Cafeteria; no jeans will be allowed. From 7:45 pm to 9 pm, there will be a 7th through 12th grade dodgeball tournament in the gym. Students will wear their class color; time will be given for students to change clothes. Snacks will be provided.

Board Hires Substitute Teacher, Assistant Coach; Accepts Resignation

The Worth County School Board voted to make three personnel changes at their regular meeting Thursday. The board accepted the resignation of Dawn Brown as a Regular Route Bus Driver with regret effective January 5th, 2019. The motion carried 4-0-1, with board member Rodney Brown abstaining. The board voted to approve Daniel Gladstone as Volunteer Assistant Boys Basketball Coach on a 5-0 vote. This is in addition to his assistant duties with the girls team. The board voted to hire Sydney Thummel as a substitute teacher as well.

Tangi Wilcox, 24, of Bedford was arrested on December 13, 2018 in the 2300 block of Tennessee Ave in Taylor County. She was charged with Driving While Suspended, a simple misdemeanor. Wilcox was additionally cited for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt. Wilcox is being held at the Taylor County Sheriff's Office on $300 bond.

On December 14th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Clara Davison (26) of Clarinda (IA) alleging Burglary (Felony) and two counts Stealing. Bond was set at $5,000, with defendant given leave to post 10% cash.

On 12-15-2018, a representative with the Maryville Elks Lodge reported the thefts of deer hides from their donation box located at their lodge to the Maryville Department of Public Safety. The Maryville Elks Lodge collects donated hides, pays for the process to turn them into gloves, and then donates the finished gloves to veterans. This is all donated time and money by the Elks Lodge and its members to provide veterans gloves free of charge. If you have any information regarding this case please contact us at 660-562-3209. If you may have been the person to take these hides, thinking they were free to the public or otherwise, we ask that you return them immediately. This is an honorable service provided by the Elks Lodge and its members which is not possible without the deer hides which are now stolen.

She was subsequently charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Gile-Smith is being held at the Taylor County Sheriff's Office on no bond, until seen by a Magistrate.

Obituary -- Sarah Jane Hilton 1955-2018

Sarah Jane Hilton, age 63, Maryville, Missouri died Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Maryville Living Center, Maryville.

Jane was born February 13, 1955 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.  She was the daughter of the late Raymond Andrew "Pat” and Sarah Marguerite (Farrell) Fattig.

Jane was a 1973 graduate of Sheridan High School, Sheridan, Missouri.  She was a beautician and owner/operator of the New Dimensions Beauty Shop in Albany, Missouri.

Jane was a member of the First Baptist Church, Maryville.  She was formerly a member of Grace Baptist Church in Harrisonville, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Doris Ann Mathis and Bette Gregory.
Her survivors include: husband Ted Hilton, Springfield, Missouri, one daughter Whitney (Todd) Simmons, Parnell, Missouri, three sons, Jake (Tiffany Huntsman) Groom, Worth, Missouri, Teddy and Chris Hilton, both of Kansas City, Missouri, one sister Jackie Fattig, Maryville, 4 grandsons, Orlo, Hunter, Couper, and Payton Simmons.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, Maryville, Missouri, with cremation to follow.  Private family inurnment will be later in the Isadora Cemetery, Grant City, Missouri.

Doris E. Clemmons, 84, of Albany, Missouri, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2018 at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Doris, the daughter of Cleo Jackson and Dollie Bea (Groce) Smith was born October 20, 1934 in Denver, Missouri.  Doris graduated from Grant City High School.

On November 17, 1954, she was united in marriage to Paul G. Clemmons. To this union eleven children were born.  Paul preceded her in death January 14, 2011.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, great-granddaughter, Dacey De Whitmire, brothers, E.C. and Cleo “Doc” Smith and her sister, Phyllis Law.

She was a homemaker and worked in the housekeeping department of the Gentry County Memorial Hospital in Albany for over 10 years. Doris was a member of the Dorsey Christian Church.

Survivors: children, Billy, Teddy, Nancy (Cecil) Booher, Judy (Richie) Morgan, Ronnie, Donnie, JoAnn, Linda (Charlie) Updegraff, Lisa, Angel (Ken) Grove, Archie (Jeremy) Fenimore; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brother, R. Joe (Nancy) Smith; nieces, nephews, close friends, Pattie Miller, Elnora Smith.

Funeral Service were held 10:00 AM Friday, December 14 at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany with burial in the Miller Cemetery, Denver, Missouri.  The family received friends 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the chapel.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Doris Clemmons Memorial Fund in care of the Roberson-Polley Chapel, 403 N. Obituary -- Dennis Puppe 1952-2018

Dennis Burt Puppe, 66, Hatfield, MO passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at his home.
He was born on November 30, 1952 in Grand Forks, North Dakota the son of Arthur and Bernice (Burtness) Puppe.

On December 28, 1999 he married Michelle Mularz in Little Washington, Virginia. She survives of the home.

Dennis served in the United States Army. He was a crop adjuster for RCIS for 14 years and was a livestock farmer. He loved raising his animals. Dennis and Michelle relocated to Eagleville in 2001 where he served on the Harrison County PWSD Board, was a past president of the Harrison County Cattleman’s Association, past president and Hall of Fame member of the National Tarentaise Cattle Association, he was a strong supporter of the North Harrison R-III FFA Chapter and Pawnee Peppers 4-H Club, and was a faithful community friend and neighbor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gerald Puppe.

Dennis is also survived by his son, Travis (Wen) Puppe, Medina, MN; daughter, Cassandra Puppe, Blaine, MN; granddaughter, Autumn Puppe; sister, Alice (Brian) Waverly, Gladstone, OR; brothers, Harvey (Maureen) Puppe, Hansel, ND, Russell (Debbie) Puppe, Greensboro, GA; sister-in-law, Pam Puppe, Kansas; mother-in-law, Dorothy Mularz, Winter Springs, FL and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial Services with Military Rites will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19 at the First Christian Church, Eagleville, MO under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, Eagleville, MO. Inurnment will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Obituary -- James Neas 1932-2018

James Martin Neas, the oldest of Pearl and Lela (Martin) Neas’s three sons, was born March 29, 1932 in Garden City, Kansas. The family lived in Kansas until 1940 when they moved to the Redding, Iowa area; settling on a farm northwest of Redding that would be home for most of Jim’s life.
Jim attended Redding school and graduated from Redding High School.

He entered the U.S. Navy on April 19, 1951, serving on the USS Pittsburgh. Jim’s service to his country afforded him the opportunity to see the world from a ship. After his honorable discharge on April 8, 1955, Jim returned to the farm. Other than the time in the US Navy, and a short time working at the International-Harvester plant in Chicago, IL, Jim was content with farm life in Ringgold County.

Jim never married but was a beloved uncle to 5 nieces & nephews. He loved to tease them and enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to working his own farm, he also worked for Bill and Bob Andrews, having a close relationship with them. He enjoyed visiting with his neighbors and hanging out at the Redding station.

Jim loved his dogs. They were constant companions and even helped with the cattle. Jim had a love for sports. He played on town teams and he followed baseball and basketball. In his earlier years, Jim was a member of the Clover Leaf Square Dance Club and he remained a member of the Redding United Methodist Church.

In 2000, Jim moved off his farm and moved to Heritage Park apartments in Mount Ayr. He enjoyed his neighborhood friends and those who took care of Heritage Park.

In 2014, Jim became a resident of Clearview Home where he received care for his failing health. On December 11, 2018, Jim quietly passed away. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Neas.

Those left to cherish and share his memory include his brother David (Dale) Neas of Vinton, IA; sister-in-law Marilyn Neas of West Des Moines, IA; nieces and nephews Sheri (Jerry) Bowles of Urbandale, IA, Lori Galioto of West Des Moines, IA, Justin (Julie) Neas of Kellerton, IA, Rebecca (LeRoy) Lilly of Winterset, IA, Jon (Jill) Neas of Urbandale, IA; 16 great nieces and nephews and 5 great great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Chet Spire Posts 12 Assists as Bluejay Boys Pull Away from Rock Port

Northeast Nodaway's boys pulled away from Rock Port in the fourth to win 55-38 Friday as Spencer Weir came out of a slump and Chet Spire and Ethan Adwell played their best games as Bluejays. Coach Rory Jackson said his team was a work in progress and that Spire was finally showing the aggression he had been looking for, learning to penetrate defenses and find the open person. Rock Port got only 10 offensive boards, but nearly every one of them turned into points; however, Ethan Adwell got most of his seven boards in the second half after Coach Jackson had challenged him and the rest of the team on rebounding at the half.

The Bluejays came off a 61-37 loss to East Atchison, one of three favorites to win the title along with Jefferson and Mound City. "We didn't really play that bad," said Jackson, who said that the team's offensive execution was really good that game despite the score. He said East Atchison had a lot of length and athleticism, but that his squad was capable of making runs against them. "But every time we'd make a run on them, they'd make a bigger one back," he said.

Rock Port came into the game with a 3-2 record and a quality win over South Holt to their credit. They were young, but really athletic, with Ethan Brumbaugh and Kalen LaHue both capable of lighting up the scoreboard at any time.

Northeast overcame Rock Port's rebounding and a rash of first half hacking and fouling. Dylan Vore carried the team in the first quarter, getting six quick points to stake his team to a 9-2 lead before sitting with two fouls. He picked up another early in the second and sat for the rest of the half. Domonic Evans got a putback and three point play to make it 9-5, but Ben Boswell came off the bench and got a putback at the buzzer to make it 11-5.

Spencer Weir hit back to back threes to make it 17-7, but missed a third and Brumbaugh raced back the other way and hit one of his own to make it 17-10 in the second. Despite all the hacking and fouling by Northeast -- the margin was 10-4 at one point in the second -- they maintained their lead and finally pulled away to a 28-17 halftime lead as Reed McIntyre got the hot hand late.

Spencer Weir hit Mitchell Sherry inside and Chet Spire sliced through the Rock Port defense in transition to make it 31-17 early. The lead grew to 37-22 following Mitchell Sherry's skip pass to Spire, who drove the left baseline for the finish, but then Ethan Brumbaugh found himself all alone for three as Northeast started losing track of him on defense. He added a putback and Kalen LaHue hit a prayer at the buzzer and a three point play to make it 37-30 again.

The teams traded blows to start the fourth as Brumbaugh tried to carry the Rock Port squad on his back, scoring six straight. But after his free throws cut Rock Port's deficit to six at 42-36, they didn't score another point until the closing seconds of the game. Meanwhile, Chet Spire hit Spencer Weir for three and Weir added a steal. Spire hit a free throw, went coast to coast after a defensive board and found Ethan Adwell for a finish, and Dylan Vore got a steal and aired it out to Spencer Weir for a three point play. Ethan Adwell's free throws with 2:32 left gave NEN its biggest lead of the night at 55-36.

Northeast had eight players in the scoring column and ten in the rebounding column. Spencer Weir had 18, Chet Spire 9, Dylan Vore 8, Ethan Adwell and Reed McIntyre 6 each, Mitchell Sherry 5, Ben Bowell 2, and Auston Pride 1.

Madelynn Mattson Has Career Night; NEN Girls Down Rock Port to Break Skid

Madelynn Mattson had a career night with 24 points and Northeast Nodaway's girls broke a three game losing skid with a 43-37 win over Rock Port Friday night. The Bluejays improved on their rebounding, took care of the ball, and got back to getting the ball inside to their big post player, turning it into a win. Against East Atchison, they struggled right and left against the Wolves' vaunted press, digging themselves into a 42-11 halftime hole. But their third quarter was their best quarter of the year; they outscored the Wolves 17-10, finally started knocking down some shots, and gave themselves something to build on. The reserves played out the fourth quarter in the 62-38 loss.

Rock Port had NEN's number over the last two years in which they were part of the same conference; they nearly doubled up the Bluejays two years ago and nearly ran Northeast out of the gym in Rock Port before a frantic rally came up short last year. Rock Port came into the match at 2-3, but were more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard, posting 61 in a win over Osborn and 56 in a win over South Holt. Two of their three losses, to quality teams in Mound City and Nodaway-Holt, were close losses; the one game they were out of was their 51-17 loss to Jefferson.

The Bluejays made a concerted effort to get the ball into their big post player, and Mattson scored eight points in the first three minutes of the game. Makayla Adwell and Paige West scored off steals as the Bluejays built up a 12-3 lead. But the referees gave a foul call to the wrong player, giving it to Mattson, who was not even in the vicinity, instead of Paige West, who was attempting to block a shot. On another call, Mattson got a clean block, but they called it a foul, sending her to the bench with two fouls.

Rock Port started chipping away, flying to the offensive glass, and getting seven offensive boards in the quarter as they fought back to within 12-8 after one and tied it up early in the second at 14 as Kelcie Gaines started taking over, driving at will to the basket.

But Makayla Adwell scored two free throws off a drive and the Bluejays got back to their game plan of getting it into Mattson, who scored eight points for the rest of the quarter. Despite the officials missing a Rock Port player elbowing Gerry Runde in the face while going after a board, Northeast played through it and built back a 24-20 lead at halftime.

NEN continued to feed Mattson, building up their lead to 28-21 as Rock Port coaching institution Jim Skillen was ranting and raving and throwing his clipboard, burning two timeouts in quick succession in an effort to stop the run. A prayer by Darius Skillen went in to spark the visitors, who closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to make it 28-27.

But Kelcie Gaines, who had carried Rock Port all night up to that point, lost her composure after picking up her third foul while trying to stop a Makayla Adwell drive and drew a technical foul; Skillen benched her for the rest of the game. Adwell made two out of the four free throws and Madelynn Mattson got a fourth chance putback to swing the momentum in NEN's favor. Another prayer by Darius Skillen went in to make it 32-29, but Madelynn Mattson drove and hit a shot and Adwell hit two free throws to make it 36-29.

Rock Port kept coming back as sharpshooter Alivia Baucom, who had been quiet all night, hit back to back threes to make it one point at 36-35. NEN missed a 1-1, and Johnny Davis had a good look at a three that would have given Rock Port the lead. But the shot went astray, and NEN froze the ball for two minutes, clinging to a one point lead. Rock Port elected to sit back, playing for a mistake by NEN that never came. Finally, Paige West got on the line and made both free throws to make it 38-35 with 1:20 left. Baucom missed both free throws after drawing a shooting foul, and Blair Stoll made one of two to give the Bluejays a 39-35 two possession lead.

Blair Stoll got a steal on defense and made one of two to make it 40-35. Paige West got a steal, was fouled on a layup attempt, and missed both free throws. But Makenna Farmer threw it away, and Gerry Runde made two free throws to make it three possessions at 42-35 with 14 seconds left. Farmer hit two free throws with 3.4 seconds to make it 42-37, but Northeast successfully got it in and Blair Stoll made one out of two to seal the win.

Shamrock Girls Hand Lamoni First Loss of Season

Despite a horrific 41 turnovers and ice cold shooting, North Harrison weathered a third quarter storm by Lamoni and beat the previously undefeated Demon squad 36-26 Thursday to move to 3-2 for the year.

Emma Craig got her second 20+ point night of the year, getting 22 points. Kami Gibson had 6, Ashlyn Gilpatrick 4, and Addie Slaughter 4. The Shamrocks shot 33% from the field. They shot much better from the line, where they were 14 for 21.

North Harrison built up a 16-7 lead by halftime, only to see much of it evaporate in the third as the Demons closed to within 22-17. But North Harrison made their free throws and finished strongly to get the win.

Emma Craig and Kami Gibson had 8 boards for North Harrison. Mason Cracraft had 6, Olivia Babinski and Addie Slaughter 5 each, Rainey Fordyce 2, and Deva Wallace 1.

Cody Wood Grabs 15 Boards as Mustang Boys Move Over .500

North Nodaway's boys moved over .500 again as Cody Wood grabbed 15 boards for the Mustangs and they turned back East Harrison 46-32 Thursday. The Mustangs looked like a completely different squad when Tyler Bix returned, winning handily over Northeast Nodaway last week after barely beating them in the Platte Valley Invitational. Pitted Tuesday against a heavily favored Mound City squad which has designs on adding a state basketball title to its football title, they were down only four late in the third before the Panthers forced three straight turnovers late to go ahead by double digits and win 63-48.

Thursday night pitted North Nodaway against another super-athletic squad in East Harrison, which came into the night with a 2-1 mark, with its loss against a rapidly improving Union Star squad, which has reached three wins and has already improved on its win total from last year. They feature Adam Rinehart, who can shoot from anywhere, along with a solid supporting cast.

A driving layup and a free throw by Arron Coleman put North Nodaway in front 6-3 early, but then Coleman picked up his second foul and sat for the remainder of the first quarter, and Rinehart and the Bobcats moved in front. Mark Willis' free throw, Rinehart's NBA three, and Ethan Billups' steal made it 9-6 in favor of East Harrison. But then North Nodaway moved back in front as Tyler Bix drove in for two and Cody Wood hit a three from the right side to make it 11-9. Ethan Billips' shot from the high post knotted it again at 11, but then back to back threes from Ryan Riley and Tyler Bix put the Mustangs in front 17-11 and swung the momentum in their favor.

Billups connected from the high post again for East Harrison, but then North Nodaway started taking control of the game as they worked the boards to fuel their game. Woody was grabbing boards right and left, starting fast breaks and finding the open person. Arron Coleman added 12, and the Mustangs had 43 boards as a team. Coleman added four rejections in the paint. Coleman had a free throw after an offensive glass, Karson Oberhauser grabbed another offensive carom and put it back in, Tyler Bix hit from the left wing after getting a skip from Karson, Bix hit Woody for three, and Coleman got a free throw after getting a steal off a Wood tip to make it 26-13.

Mark Willis hit from inside to cut the margin to 28-17, but Wood fueled a late push for North Nodaway, hitting Oberhauser in the corner for three, Ryan Riley in transition for another three, and then Riley for another good look at a three with time winding down in the second. Riley's shot went astray, but Arron Coleman's tipin made it 36-17 at the half.

North Nodaway, which has played well in spurts for most of the year, cooled down in the second half, but continued to play stingy defense. Arron Coleman was the only player hitting for North Nodaway in the third, scoring six of his team's eight points as his team kept it at 18 at 44-26 going into the fourth. The Mustangs were content to run out the clock for most of the fourth and East Harrison never got closer than the final score.

Kandace Damgar, Red Hot Mustangs Down East Harrison

North Nodaway took their play to a historic level Tuesday when they shocked everyone besides themselves with a 43-32 win over Mound City, the defending state champions. It was their first win over Mound City since at least the 2009-2010 season; most of the games have been one-sided affairs in favor of the Panthers. But North Nodaway completely outplayed the Panthers, withstanding run after run by the purple shirts.

Thursday was a perfect trap game for North Nodaway. The Bobcats, with their 1-3 record, was easy to overlook despite the fact they had taken North Nodaway to overtime in Cainsville last year. But their losses were all against quality opponents in Worth County, Osborn, and Grundy County; they finally got on the winning track against doormat Union Star with a 55-20 win Tuesday.

But the Mustangs were red hot Thursday night from the field and stayed that way the whole game, fueled by Kandace Damgar and her 21 points. North Nodaway stole the ball 34 times against the Bobcats and forced between 40 and 45 turnovers. The result was a 67-48 win over East Harrison; the Mustangs put up the most points on the board in the win since January 23rd, 2015, when they beat West Nodaway 70-27. The game started off knotted at 2, but then Audrey Trimble got a steal and a layup. Kandace Damgar hit a baseline three, Ashley Thompson hit a free throw, and then Damgar hit back to back threes before Ashley Thompson got a third chance putback to make it 16-2 at the 3:15 mark.

For some reason, Natayla Selby, who was injured during the Worth County game but was at full strength for Thursday's game, did not start and did not come in until the score was 16-2. When she came in, the Bobcats looked like a completely different team, moving the ball around, staying out of the trap areas, and moving to the open areas. Lauryn Waddle hit a three point play and Selby struck from downtown and all of a sudden, the Bobcats were threatening to make it a game, down only 16-8.

The margin stayed between 8 and 10 points until a momentum changing sequence in favor of North Nodaway happened at the end of the first quarter. Keagan O'Riley hit a mid-range jumper with about 12 seconds left to make it 20-10. Then, as time was winding down, the orange shirts took it down the right side of the court right into North Nodaway's trapping defense, and Saylor Brown came away with a steal. She raced down the floor and fed O'Riley for a layup as time expired in the period to put North Nodaway up 22-10.

The momentum continued into the second quarter as Kristin Herndon started off with a steal and the Audrey Trimble took on several orange shirts, blowing by them like they weren't even there for a layup to make it 26-10. Waddle countered with a drive, but Saylor Brown got the ball into Ashley Thompson inside and added a pair of free throws to make it 30-12. Selby did all she could to keep her squad in the game, but North Nodaway continued to hit shots and took a 41-23 lead into halftime. Frustration set in for the Bobcats; their new skipper, Taylor Zimmerman, was yelling so loud at her team during halftime in the locker room she could be heard clear from the stands and Bill Pottorff, who coached them last year, stormed out of the court in disgust at one point during the third quarter.

The game stayed between 15 and 20 until about three minutes were left in the third, when another momentum-changing sequence happened Keagan O'Riley hit from the left side to make it 48-27 off a pass from Kandace Damgar; then, as East Harrison was bringing it up the floor, the ball came loose and Audrey Trimble saved it to Kandace Damgar. Damgar had trouble securing the ball, got tangled up with Natayla Selby, but somehow came away with the ball with nothing between her and the basket for a layup. Saylor Brown added a pair of free throws off a steal, and Kristin Herndon drove into the teeth of the Bobcat defense and got a layup after getting a pass from Jadon Dobbins. Waddle countered with a backdoor layup, but Saylor Brown hit Audrey Trimble for three to make it 57-28.

At that point, North Nodaway started clearing their bench, but East Harrison wasn't finished Selby and the Bobcats got untracked, closing to 57-38 early in the fourth quarter. But North Nodaway put their starters back in and Damgar hit back to back threes before Jadon Dobbins added a steal to make it 65-38 with 3:41 left.

Kandace Damgar had 21 points to lead the Mustangs. Keagan O'Riley and Kristin Herndon had 12 each, Audrey Trimble 9, Ashley Thompson 7, Saylor Brown 4, and Jadon Dobbins 2.

Free Throws Doom Tiger Girls Against North Andrew

Worth County's girls, after a promising start to the season, dropped their third straight game, this time to North Andrew 50-47 in overtime. In each loss, it seemed like something different hurt the Tigers. In the Stanberry game, it was turnovers. Against Maryville, Worth County struggled on the boards, but was somehow right with Maryville until they dropped a 3-pointer on Worth County that made their lead six with two minutes left, forcing Worth County to foul and put them on the line. Against North Andrew, it was free throws, with the Tigers going 10 for 23 from the line.

The Tigers threw the ball away five times in the first four minutes, throwing the ball all over the gym, but somehow, they were right with the Cardinals despite losing Anna Gladstone for much of the first quarter due to foul trouble. The Cardinals graduated nearly everybody, but simply reloaded with standout Jentry Copple returning, along with post players Emily Cole and Alaina Officer and sharpshooters Malayna Briner and Cambiran Roush. But after trailing for much of the first quarter, Worth County fought back to tie it at 11 to close out the first quarter.

Worth County kept right with the Cards through the second quarter, but in the third, the Cards threatened to take control, moving ahead 30-24. All of a sudden, Worth County, which had been blown out the last few years to North Andrew, realized they could play ball with North Andrew and fought back as Kristin New hit a drive and Anna Gladstone, battling three fouls, hit a free throw and added another tally after a Jessi Badell tip and steal to make it 30-29.

Jentry Copple's coast to coast drive made it 34-29 again and Badell countered with a free throw to make it 34-30, but Anna Gladstone picked up her fourth foul late in the third. Worth County was still down 37-32 early in the fourth, but then Gladstone came back. Regan Allee hit two free throws, Jessi Badell hit from the right wing off a pass from Gladstone, Kaylee McElvain hit from the high post off a pass from Kristin New, and Jessi Badell hit Regan Allee for three to put Worth County in front 41-37.

But then Roush drained one from the top of the key to keep North Andrew's chance alive with 2:34 left. Anna Gladstone's putback made it 43-40 and Cole stepped outside for what should have been a tying three, but her foot was on the line with 1:21 left and Worth County was still up one. Jessi Badell missed a 12-footer, but Regan Allee stripped Copple and hit one of two to make it 44-42. Copple missed a prayer, but Kristin New missed a 1-1 and Kaylee McElvain fouled Officer battling for the rebound. Officer hit both free throws to tie it up at 44 with 30 seconds left. Worth County played for the last shot, but Regan Allee's guarded three was up and over the top, sending the game to overtime.

North Andrew took advantage of an unforced turnover as Copple was out of control, but Worth County bailed her out and put her on the line. She hit both free throws, but Kaylee McElvain tied it up again with 1:54 left with a shot from the left side. McElvain's free throw put Worth County up 47-46, but Alaina Officer's free throw tied it again at 47.

With 38 seconds left, Anna Gladstone drove on Copple and another red shirt and drew Copple's fifth foul on a charge/block call that could have gone either way. But she missed both free throws and North Andrew set up a perfect high-low lob to Emily Cole, who successfully converted a three point play with 16 seconds left; Kristin New's contested three was off the mark for Worth County.

Regan Allee had 11 points for Worth County. Jessi Badell, Kaylee McElvain, and Anna Gladstone all had 9, while Kristin New had 8.

The boys fell victim to an 89-39 massacre to a reloaded North Andrew squad, which proceeded to run up the score in the second half after they were already up 52-12 at half. They remain with one lone win for the year.

Mark Carr Injured in Wreck

Dr. Mark Carr, son of Berkley and Joyce Carr of Allendale, was injured in a wreck Saturday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2002 BMW 325 driven by Andy Strahm (45) of St. Joseph and a 2016 Honda CRV driven by Mary Carr (61) of Cameron were both westbound on US 36 two miles southwest of Panther Road two miles southwest of Breckenridge at around 5:18 pm. The Patrol says that Strahm rear-ended the Carr vehicle, overturned as it crossed the median, and came to rest on its wheels facing northeast in the eastbound land of traffic. The Carr vehicle overturned in the westbound lane of 36 and came to rest on its top facing south.

Strahm was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. He received serious injuries and was taken to Cameron Regional Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Mary Carr received minor injuries, as did Mark Carr, who was a passenger. They were both wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. They were both taken to Cameron Regional Medical Center. Both vehicles were totaled.

On November 30th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Zachary Tyler Watson (32) of Diagonal on charges of 1st Degree Harassment and Disorderly Conduct.

On December 3rd, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Randy Randle (49) of Sheridan in DeKalb County on an Andrew County Sheriff’s Warrant for Failure to Appear on Traffic Charges, a St. Joseph Police Department Warrant for Failure to Appear on Traffic Charges, Speeding, and Driving While Suspended.

On December 3rd, Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer filed charges against Nevaeh Matson (35) of Bethany alleging 12 counts of Passing Bad Checks (all Felonies). Bond was set at $10,000, with 10% cash approved.

On December 3rd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Joseph de la Paz (37) of Maryville alleging Stealing.

On December 4th, Gentry County Prosecutor David B. Parman filed charges against James Smith (38) of Albany alleging Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony), Resisting Arrest (Felony), and Attempted Tampering with Physical Evidence. Bond was denied by Judge Ed Manring.

On December 4th, Worth County Prosecutor Brett Hurst filed charges against Christopher Shiflett (30) of Worth alleging No Seat Belt.

Abraham Schweers, 37, of Lenox was arrested on December 5, 2018 in the 100 block of West Ohio St in Lenox. He was charged with Driving While Revoked, a serious misdemeanor. Schweers is being held at the Taylor County Sheriff's Office on $1,000 bond.

On December 6th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Emily Berning (19) of Maryville in Nodaway County on a St. Joseph City Warrant for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility. She was taken to the Nodaway County Jail, where she was being held on bond.

On December 7th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Anthony Shipps-Webb (28) of Gower alleging Interference with Custody (Felony). Bond was set at $5,000 with 10% cash approved.

On December 7th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Robert Tracy (17) of Maryville alleging two counts Domestic Assault (both Felonies) and Resisting Arrest. Bond was set at $20,000, cash only.

On December 8th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Brandon Hanaway (36) of St. Joseph alleging Property Damage and Assault.

On December 9th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Chaleigh Shade (24) of Chandler (AZ) in Harrison County on a charge of Speeding 105 mph in a 70 mph zone. She was taken to the Harrison County Jail, where she was being held on bond.

On December 9th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Demetria Wilson (34) of Karnack (TX) on charges of Speeding, two counts Possession of Controlled Substance (Felonies), and Armed Criminal Action (Felony). She was taken to the Harrison County Jail, where she was placed on a 24 hour hold. She was subsequently charged by Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer, who filed an additional charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On December 10th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Albert Ferguson (33) of Maryville alleging DWI (Persistent, Felony), and No Valid License (3rd or Subsequent Offense, Felony). Bond was set at $2,500, with defendant given leave to post 10% cash.

On December 10th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Seth Johnson (19) alleging Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On December 10th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Anna Eisceid (39) of Bedford alleging Stealing.

On December 10th, Gentry County Prosecutor David B. Parman filed charges against Kyle Potts (24) of Rosendale alleging Driving While Revoked (Felony) and Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway.

Charges listed are mere allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Shamrock Boys Allow Fewest Points in Nine Years, Down Newtown-Harris 73-13

North Harrison held an opponent to its lowest point total since 2009 and buried Newtown-Harris 73-13 Monday night. The last time the Shamrocks held an opponent to 13 points or fewer was in the 2009-2010 season, when they beat North Daviess 88-10 to start off that season. They also beat Pattonsburg 52-16 that year. In the 2010-11 season, they beat Cainsville 54-17 and Heartland Christian (IA) 72-18. Those were the last two times the Shamrocks have held an opponent under 20 points.

Scoringwise, North Harrison, after finding baskets hard to come by over the last decade, broke the 70 point barrier four times last year, getting 76 points in a win over Grundy County. They have broken the 70 point barrier twice this year, getting 75 against Tri-County to start the season. From the 2012-13 season to the 2017-18 season, they only broke the 70 point barrier once, in 2015 in a 77-58 win over Tri-County.

Newtown-Harris came into the game having won two games this year so far after having won two all of last year. It depends on which team shows up, as they have an impressive 52-14 win over Breckenridge to start the season and a 47-38 win over Tri-County. In their other two games, they have struggled to break the 20 point barrier, losing 66-9 to La Plata and 48-18 to Madison.

Steven Willhite hit a 3-pointer on the right wing after a Brett Emig skip pass and Emig took on three successfully after Grant Claycomb fed him a high-low look. Ryan Metcalf countered with a triple to make it 5-3, but then things went from bad to worse for the purple Tigers. Free throws from Steven Willhite and Logan Craig made it 9-3. Then, Brett Emig got a tip, Grant Claycomb got a steal, and Logan Craig cleaned up. Craig scored from the left side, Steven Willhite skipped one to Brett Emig, and Gavin Garrett scored off a Brett Emig steal to make it 17-3.

Andrew Garcia tried to rally his team, scoring twice for the purple Tigers, but Brett Emig’s baseline shot made it 24-7 after one quarter.

From there, the whole bottom dropped out for Newtown-Harris as North Harrison scored 27 unanswered points in the second. Emig scored off a steal and then finished off a Logan Craig steal to start. Logan Craig worked the inside for a basket and two free throws, then Steven Willhite added two free throws after Logan Huitt kept a possession alive and Logan Craig got it to Willhite. Grant Claycomb hit Willhite for three; then, Willhite got a block, Logan Huitt got a board, and Willhite cleaned up in transition.

North Harrison started filtering in subs at that point, but they continued to clock as Brett Emig got a putback and added a steal, Logan Craig got a pass inside from Collin Briggs, and then Wade Briggs got a tip, Brett Emig got the steal, threw to Logan, who threw to Emig for a basket and a chance for a three point play. He missed, but Logan Craig got a third chance putback. Tyler Lundy got a tip and Logan Craig a steal to cap the run before NaVontae Rainey broke the run for Newtown-Harris to make it 51-9 at the half.

The Shamrocks kept scoring in the third as Gavin Garrett hit Logan Craig inside and hit Brett Emig backdoor. Emig had a chance for a three point play, missed, but Logan Craig was there for the putback. Steven Willhite started another break when he got an outlet to Brett Emig and got the ball back for a basket. Brett Emig got a basket, and then Steven Willhite saved one from going out of bounds to Logan Craig, who had an easy layup.

At that point, the starters were done, but the reserves kept pulling away as Wade Briggs got a steal and then added two more off a Hunter Parkhurst steal. Collin Briggs hit Tyler Lundy backdoor to make it 69-11 after three.

Shamrock Girls Post Second Win, Stop Newtown-Harris

North Harrison’s Shamrocks posted their second straight win after dropping their first two, downing Newtown-Harris 41-18 Monday night. They showed flashes of their old form from last year and dominated the game from wire to wire, shutting the purple Tigers off the boards and giving up only three offensive boards. Emma Craig posted her second straight double double, getting 16 points and 13 boards for the Shamrocks, while everybody else chipped in on the boards.

Newtown-Harris came into Monday’s game having started off with a 39-35 win over Breckinridge to start off the season. They had every right to expect a better season than last year’s six-win campaign, having returned most of their players from last year. But the purple Tigers, playing without sharpshooter Gabrielle Nielson from last year, have since fallen on hard times, struggling to score 20 points in blowout losses to Madison and LaPlata in the Novinger Tournament and to Tri-County in the HDC.

Sure enough, North Harrison got going early as Addie Slaughter got a putback and Emma Craig got a steal. Kami Gibson hit Emma Craig inside for two free throws, Mason Cracraft got a steal, and Emma Craig drove down the right side to make it 10-0 with 3:29 left in the first.

Lillian Fordyce broke the drought for Newtown-Harris, but then Olivia Babinski skipped one to Addie Slaughter and Slaughter hit Kami Gibson inside to make it 14-2 after one.

Lillian Fordyce and the purple Tigers tried to stay in the game, as she had five more points in the second period. But North Harrison kept getting the ball into their post players at will during the second quarter. Rainey Fordyce had back to back to back assists in the period, while Mason Cracraft had two and Emma Craig one. All 12 points by North Harrison in the period were by their posts; Emma Craig had six, Kami Gibson four, and Addie Slaughter two. The Shamrocks led 26-9 at the half.

North Harrison got the lead over 20 in the third as Mason Cracraft hit Emma Craig in the high post. Cracraft tipped one to Kami Gibson, who threw to Emma Craig, who threw to Cracraft for the finish to make it 30-9 on the ensuing trip down the floor. Amanda Tucker scored from inside to make it 30-11, and North Harrison began subbing freely at this point. A freshman, Deva Wallace, hit Emma Craig inside and Rainey Fordyce added a steal to make it 34-11 after three. Addie Slaughter got a fourth chance putback and Mason Cracraft cleaned up her own miss after getting a steal to give the Shamrocks their biggest lead of the night at 38-11 early in the fourth.

Emma Craig had 16 points for the Shamrocks. Addie Slaughter had 10, Mason Cracraft 7, Kami Gibson 6, and Rainey Fordyce 2.

Obituary -- Frank Jenks 1945-2018

Frank Oliver Jenks was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon  May 18, 1945, and departed this life December 8, 2018 at Worth County Care and Rehab Center in Grant City, Missouri.  He was preceded in death by his parents Emery and Verna Mae Jenks.  He is survived by a brother Jack (Connie) of Ellinwood, Kansas,  daughter Stacie (Allen) of Grant City, son Troy (Sara) of Great Bend, Kansas, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Frank will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

Frank was well known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, and his willingness to help others.  Anyone who visited the Care Center in the last few years has probably met Frank, who was the unofficial greeter at the door. 

At Frank’s request, there will be no services at this time.  A Celebration of Life service will be held in Grant City at a later date.

Eagleville Makes 400 Dozen Cinnamon Rolls to Raise Funds for Teen

The community of Eagleville has come together following the loss of Collin Castleberry. There was no school Thursday, the day of the funeral; there were so many people there, there was not enough room in the venue to hold everybody.

The basketball game with Novinger for that day was played as scheduled. There were baked goods for sale at the concession stand that evening for a free will donation. The free will donation box was full by the end of the games.

Then, a group of people got together at The Vintage Nest to raise and sell cinnamon rolls to pay for funeral expenses. Ashley Rinehart organized the fundraiser. Over a period of two days, there were over 400 dozen cinnamon rolls made.
