Tiger Girls Clinch Share of GRC West Title

Anna Gladstone scored her third straight 20+ point game and Worth County beat Pattonsburg 68-45 to clinch a three way share of the GRC West Title along with North Andrew and Stanberry. Kaylee McElvain rode her newfound 3-point shooting ability to 15 points, and everybody else chipped in as the Tigers got their first title since 2003, ending a 16 year drought.

Pattonsburg came in greatly improved from last year, with the ability to score point against almost everyone. They scored 31 in a quarter against King City and nearly wiped out a 19 point fourth quarter deficit before losing 70-68, and have scored 40 or more points in all but four of their games behind the play of Webby Bailey, who did all she could against Worth County.

But like she did in the Albany and King City games, Anna Gladstone carried the team on her back, scoring nine out of Worth County's first 12 points as they were beating Pattonsburg up and down the floor. Jessi Badell got a steal and Reagan Allee threw one to Gladstone for a finish. Pattonsburg lobbed into Grace Warner inside, but Anna Gladstone hit Kaylee McElvain from the top of the key for three, Anna Gladstone got a tip and Jessi Badell got a steal and threw it to Anna for the finish, and then Regan Allee got a block and Kaylee McElvain, who nearly got a double double, grabbed the carom and threw to Anna to make it 12-4.

Gladstone then picked up her first two fouls in succession and sat down. Kristin New hit from the right wing off a pass from Badell, but then Pattonsburg started chipping away, getting a putback from Kadence Johnson and free throws from Bailey to make it 14-8. Bailey threw up a prayer at the first quarter buzzer that went in to make it 18-13.

Anna Gladstone came back in and once again carried the team on her back, and didn't pick up her third foul. She blew by three green shirts like they weren't even there to start the scoring, prompting Pattonsburg to start chucking up threes instead of running their plays. That backfired as Worth County simply grabbed the defensive boards and started beating them up and down the floor. Jessi Badell then aired one out to Anna Gladstone, Kaylee McElvain added a free throw, and Kristin New aired out a defensive board to Gladstone to make it double digits again at 25-13, prompting a Pattonsburg timeout.

The Panthers settled down and started going to the rim instead of chucking up threes, but Worth County continued to pull away. Bailey's free throw cut it to 25-14, but Regan Allee scored off a drive after Anna Gladstone kicked one out to her, and Anna Gladstone got a steal and fed Kaylee McElvain, who missed her layup try, but got her own rebound and put it back in to make it 29-14. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way, and Worth County led 37-21 at the half.

Pattonsburg tried a zone to start the second half, but Regan Allee got it into Jessi Badell to start the scoring and Kaylee McElvain added a three-pointer to make it 19 at 42-23. Allee got her fourth foul, and Kadence Johnson's free throws cut it to 42-25, but then Haley Hunt came off the bench and played some of her best basketball so far this year while everyone else chipped in. Badell hit a free throw after an offensive board, Kaylee McElvain scored off a baseline drive, Badell added two more free throws, and Worth County went over the 20 point barrier at 47-25. Bailey cut it to 47-27 for Pattonsburg, but then Kaylee McElvain hit from the left wing off a kickout from Anna Gladstone, Jill Hardy drove down the right side, and then Haley Hunt scored six straight to give Worth County its biggest lead of the night at 57-27 with 1:24 left in the third. Pattonsburg got no closer than 20 the rest of the way.

Anna Gladstone had 21 points to lead the Tigers. Kaylee McElvain had 15, Haley Hunt 8, Regan Allee and Jessi Badell 7, Kristin New 6, and Merrideth Spiers and Jill Hardy 2 each.

Jessi Badell had 3 blocks for Worth County. Anna Gladstone, Haley Hunt, and Regan Allee all had 1.

Kaylee McElvain nearly had a double double as she had 9 boards. Anna Gladstone had 7, Jessi Badell 6, Regan Allee and Kristin New 5, Haley Hunt 2, and Merrideth Spiers, Jill Hardy, and Justina Wimer had 1.

Kristin New had 8 tips. Anna Gladstone had 6, Haley Hunt and Jessi Badell had 5, Regan Allee 4, and Jill Hardy, Megan Cassavaugh, and Merrideth Spiers had 1.

Dylan Vore Scores 19 as NEN Buries Stewartsville

Northeast Nodaway beat Stewartsville 50-38 in a game that was not as close as the final score as Dylan Vore was a force in the post for the Bluejays, getting 19 points. The Bluejays evened their record out at 9-9, with a chance to play for a winning season, their second in a row after spending some time in the basement. The Bluejays had beaten Stewartsville 44-37 in the first game between the two teams, at the Platte Valley Invitational in Union Star in a game that was nip and tuck. Since then, the Cardinals have played .500 ball, but all but one of their wins were against teams with three wins or less for the year.

Coaches were wary of the Cards, who sport a rabid fan base and an athletic team; they drew the third seed at the Platte Valley Invitational. But frustration has set in for the Cards, with their coach, Travis Curtis, doing the Chinese Fire Drill several times during Tuesday's game, trying to find some kind of spark. Stewartsville had every reason to go all-out against the Bluejays, who derailed them in Union Star. It looked like the Cardinals might take control as they collected five offensive boards within the first few minutes of the game, but then NEN suddenly figured out how to put pressure on them, getting 16 tips and 22 steals for the night while only surrendering the ball 12 times despite nonstop pressure from the red shirts in the second half.

Northeast was somehow ahead 6-4 early despite Stewartsville's early control of the boards, but then NEN started to pull away as Dylan Vore got loose in transition and Ben Boswell added a 3-pointer to make it 11-4. Tyler Haskell cut it to 11-7 for Stewartsville, but Chet Spire got a tip and Spencer Weir a steal, and then Ben Boswell added another steal to put the Bluejays up 15-7 after one.

Mitchell Sherry hit Dylan Vore inside, prompting the Chinese Fire Drill from Stewartsville. Despite that, NEN kept pulling away as Weir hit two free throws, Reed McIntyre got it to Vore in transition, McIntyre lobbed one into Vore for a three-point play, and then Weir got a tip on defense, Chet Spire got a steal, and got it back to Spencer to make it 26-7. Stewartsville chipped away, getting it down to 26-10 on Mitchell Lundy's steal, but then Vore found Reed McIntyre all alone with four seconds left to make it 28-10 at the break.

Stewartsville put on frantic pressure to start the second, and at first, it looked like it might work. Spencer Weir hit Dylan Vore inside to make it 30-10, but then Mitchell Lundy got a putback, Jake Schellhorn got a steal off the press, and Tyler Haskell got a three to make it 30-17. The Stewartsville fans were threatening to erupt, and things were threatening to get interesting for the Bluejays after Weir, one of NEN's main ballhandlers, collided with one of the red shirts, got a bloody lip, and no foul was called as he came out for the rest of the quarter.

But all of a sudden, Northeast settled down and started feeding their big man inside as Vore scored off a drive and then Chet Spire found him inside. Vore got a steal and hit Ben Boswell for a layup, and then Chet Spire's drive set up Ben Boswell's three. Mitchell Sherry got one to Spire in transition as NEN restored order, going into the fourth quarter up 41-17. Spencer Weir was OK, and he came back in at the start of the fourth. Auston Pride showed some promise in the post as the freshman scored twice in the paint as NEN's biggest lead was 45-20 and 47-22.

Dylan Vore had 19 points to lead the Bluejays. Ben Boswell had 10, Spencer Weir 6, Ethan Adwell and Auston Pride 4, Chet Spire 3, and Reed McIntyre and Drew Wiederholt 2.

Dylan Vore, Chet Spire, and Chase Atkins had 1 block each.

Spencer Weir had 6 boards for the Bluejays. Chet Spire had 5, Mitchell Sherry 4, Dylan Vore 3, and Ethan Adwell, Nathan Schieber, Auston Pride, and Reed McIntyre had 1 each.

Mitchell Sherry had 5 assists. Chet Spire and Dylan Vore had 4, Reed McIntyre 3, Spencer Weir 2, and Rory Bredlow 1.

Mitchell Sherry had 8 tips. Ethan Adwell, Spencer Weir, and Dylan Vore had 2, while Chet Spire and Ben Boswell had 1.

Chet Spire had 5 steals. Dylan Vore and Spencer Weir had 4, Ethan Adwell and Mitchell Sherry 3, Ben Boswell 2, and Nathan Schieber 1.

Blair Stoll Has 8 Assists; Balanced Scoring Leads NEN Girls Past Stewartsville

Blair Stoll found the open person at will Tuesday night, getting eight assists, and Northeast Nodaway's girls used a balanced attack to get a running clock win, 50-19 over Stewartsville as they have won four out of their last five since losing to Mercer at South Harrison. They are now up to 11-7 for the year and have a chance to close out their second straight winning season. Stewartsville has had a pair of impressive wins, a 58-54 win over East Harrison earlier in the year and a 47-23 win over Gilman City. They started off the year like they were going to be greatly improved, giving North Nodaway everything they could handle in the first quarter before one of their best interior defenders blew her knee out and the Cardinals headed south, falling to the Mustangs 41-11.

Northeast Nodaway took a big lead after one, fended off Stewartsville's attempts to rally in the second before finishing strong, and put on the clamps defensively in the third as they got it to running clock territory by the fourth quarter. The Bluejays continued to show improvement in taking care of the ball; after not turning it over at all for the first 12 minutes of the second half or giving up a single offensive glass to Albany, they didn't turn it over at all for the first 14 minutes of Tuesday's game despite full court man to man pressure from Stewartsville, only had three turnovers after three quarters, and six for the game. They also continued their improvement on the boards from the Albany game; they only gave up four offensive boards against Stewartsville Tuesday.

While they turned over the ball over six times against Stewartsville, they stole the ball 22 times, led by Paige West with 6, which translated into around a ridiculous 30-6 turnover margin in NEN's favor.

The Bluejays were reeling at the end of December, dropping some games they felt they should have won; however, they righted the ship in January with balanced scoring and making everyone a threat to score. They got five players scoring between seven and 11 points; Madelynn Mattson scored 11 despite going up against freshman six-footer Maddison Lundy, a strong defensive post player. Makayla Adwell and Paige West bot had 10, Blair Stoll 8, and Anne Scheiber 7. Gerry Runde and Angela Standiford had 2 each to round out the scoring.

Paige West hit Blair Stoll on the left wing to start the scoring, and Stoll got the first of eight by finding a cutting Paige West backdoor to make it 4-0. Makayla Adwell got loose in transition after Blair Stoll got it to her, and Madelynn Mattson hit a cutting Paige West, who got on the line and hit a free throw to make it 7-0. West missed the second free throw, but in an echo of the Albany game, in which NEN used an offensive board to score five points without losing possession of the ball, West kept the possession alive after the ball was batted around. That led to Makayla Adwell hitting a cutting Gerry Runde to make it 9-0. Makayla Adwell hit Blair Stoll for three, and then Blair Stoll hit Madelynn Mattson in the high post to make it 14-0 at the 3:41 mark.

Kelsi Caraway tried to get Stewartsville back in it by scoring off a drive and hitting from the left wing to make it 14-4. Makayla Adwell picked up her second foul, and then Reagan Robinson hit one in the corner to make it 14-6. But then Anne Scheiber hit Blair Stoll on the left wing for three and Paige West scored off a steal to make it 19-6 with 12 seconds left. Caraway raced down the court and hit a layup at the buzzer to make it 19-8.

Makayla Adwell got the hot hand early for NEN in the second, scoring six straight to raise the lead to 25-8. Northeast made a concerted effort to get it into Madelynn Mattson in the frame, but she missed a ton of shots trying to get it over Lundy, and Stewartsville started chipping away as Caraway's drive made it 26-14 with 1:10 left. But then Mattson got untracked as Stoll skipped one to her for a three-point play with 16 seconds left in the half. Makayla Adwell got a steal and then Blair Stoll got it to Mattson again at the buzzer to put Northeast Nodaway back in control up 31-14.

Mattson continued to have the hot hand early in the third quarter as Paige West got a steal, got it to Gerry Runde, who hit a driving Mattson for two. Blair Stoll lobbed one to Mattson and West added a putback to make it 37-14. The Bluejays got cold again and Stewartsville got on the line to close to within 37-17, but Madelynn Mattson hit Paige West backdoor, and then Annie Schieber got the hot hand, hitting one from the high post. Then, Alba Vozmediario pushed one ahead after getting a defensive board, got it to Blair Stoll, who hit Schieber on the right wing for three at the buzzer to make it 44-17.

Blair Stoll got a kickout to Anne Scheiber on the left wing just inside the three point line, Angela Standiford, who had some quality minutes again after coming back from a shoulder injury, got a tip and steal and hit two free throws, and Madelynn Mattson hit a cutting Makayla Adwell to give Northeast its biggest lead of the night at 50-17.

NEN, which had struggled on the boards earlier this season, had much more balanced rebounding Tuesday; they had nine different players get boards and six players get three or more. By contrast, they had three players get all but three of their boards in the Nodaway-Holt loss earlier in the season. Paige West had 7 boards for the Bluejays. Anne Schieber and Madelynn Mattson had 4 each, Blair Stoll, Gerry Runde, and Alba Vozmediario had 3, while Angela Standiford, Tierney Privett, and Makayla Adwell had 1.

Blair Stoll had 8 assists for the Bluejays. Madelynn Mattson had 4, Makayla Adwell, Gerry Runde, and Anne Schieber had 3, and Paige West had 1.

Paige West had 4 tips for the Bluejays. Anne Schieber had 3, Angela Standiford 2, and Gerry Runde, Madelynn Mattson, Alba Vozmediario, and Ilenia Ricci had 1.

Paige West had 6 steals. Alba Vozmediario had 4, Blair Stoll, Angela Standiford, and Makayla Adwell had 3 each, while Gerry Runde, Madelynn Mattson, and Ilenia Ricci had 1.

Bill Pottorff Named Cainsville Superintendent

North Harrison graduate Bill Pottorff, the Principal at Cainsville, has been named superintendent at that school for next year by the school board, last week’s Bethany Republican-Clipper reported. Pottorff has been an umpire, a teacher, and a coach for several years. He coached girls basketball for several years, first for South Harrison and then for East Harrison before hanging up his whistle after last year.

Pottorff was one of the most colorful coaches in the area, constantly prowling the sidelines with his trademark glare and ranting and raving at his players. He had winning programs at both schools with his pressure defenses and his teams’ hard-nosed play.

Pottorff replaces Richard Smith, who is retiring from education after 47 years. He will be replaced by Ryan Rosenbaum, who moved from Lincoln (NE).

Gerry Runde Has Monster Night on the Boards, Madelynn Mattson Has 20, Five Point Play Swings Bluejays Fortunes Against Warriors

Gerry Runde had a monster night on the boards for Northeast Nodaway’s girls in the King City Tournament against Albany, Madelynn Mattson had 20 points, and Northeast Nodaway’s girls beat Albany 53-33 Wednesday in the only game they were able to get in; the other two games were canceled due to inclement weather. The game was close until the third quarter, when a five point play turned things around for good in NEN’s favor.

Previously, Northeast had beaten Albany 41-35 as they had a shaky start, a shaky finish, but came away with the win. They gave up 25 offensive boards and turned the ball over 21 times that game. But in their second meeting, they only gave up six offensive boards and only surrendered the ball 13 times.

One thing that helped was the return of Angela Standiford (shoulder), she was able to come off the bench and give Gerry Runde and Madelynn Mattson breaks. With Anne Schieber, Alba Vozmediario, and Ilenia Ricci able to come off the bench, NEN’s depth has gotten a lot better since the early part of the season.

Things started off well for NEN, as Blair Stoll hit Gerry Runde for three and Madelynn Mattson got a third chance putback and hit from the high post to put the Bluejays up 7-3 with 2:25 left in the first, forcing Albany into their first timeout. But then Abby Landon, who had a breakout game against Worth County, hit an inside shot after Gabby Newman got loose on a drive, and then Newman hit a guarded three and a guarded shot from the left wing to put Albany up 10-7 after one.

So far, the game followed the script of the first game, where NEN fell behind 15-8 and then fought back to take the lead in the second quarter and made it stand up. Gerry Runde hit Madelynn Mattson inside, and she hit two free throws and Paige West followed with a backdoor layup to put NEN back up 11-10. Gabby Newman went backdoor to put Albany back in front, but Makayla Adwell hit a drive and Gerry Runde hit Madelynn Mattson inside to put NEN up 14-12 at the 5:09 mark.

The Warriors were able to keep up with Northeast for much of the second quarter, as the Bluejays fell into a rash of hacking and fouling and Albany was able to score their next five points from the line to go up 17-16 at the 3:10 mark of the half. Paige West hit Blair Stoll for three to restore order; then, Blair Stoll skipped one to Paige West on the left baseline to make it 21-17. Gabby Newman went coast to coast to cut Albany’s deficit to 21-19, but Madelynn Mattson hit a free throw and then Paige West went coast to coast, ran over Kayce Messner, got the call on a charge/block, and hit both free throws to put NEN up 24-19 at the break.

Makayla Adwell, who was quiet in the first half, came out of the gate with two quick baskets to put the Bluejays up 28-21 to start the third quarter. But just like in the Worth County game, Abby Landon threatened to bring Albany back as she scored from inside and then stepped out and hit a 3-pointer to make it 28-26 again. Gerry Runde got an offensive board and got it to Madelynn Mattson and Blair Stoll hit Madelynn inside to make it 32-26 again to put the Bluejays out of harm’s way again.

Albany called a timeout to try to stop the bleeding, but then a five point play from the Bluejays broke their backs. First, Albany tried to trap Paige West on the right sideline, only for Paige to get it to Makayla Adwell, who found Madelynn Mattson on the weak side baseline to make it 34-26. Madelynn drew the foul, but missed the free throw. But Gerry Runde got the offensive glass, drew a foul and the putback, and banked home the three point play; all of a sudden, instead of a tight game, NEN was safely in control up 37-26.

Shortly afterwards, Gabby Newman got a frustration foul and her coach, Brooke Crawford, was not happy with it and benched her until midway through the fourth quarter, when the game was already decided.

The Warriors got a pair of breaks as a questionable foul call on Paige West turned into a four point swing. Paige West was in perfect position to rebound an errant NEN shot and put it back in, but the referees claimed she had fouled; the general rule of thumb is that the player who has position on rebounding situations is supposed to get the benefit of the doubt. That was her fourth foul, and little-used Delaney Shields converted on the other end for the Warriors to bring them back to within 37-28, a nine point deficit instead of 13.

But even that did not swing the momentum back in Albany’s favor as NEN got loose against Albany’s press and Gerry Runde found Alba Vozmediario, who had come in for West, loose underneath the basket. Alba converted a three-point play and NEN was back up by double digits at 40-28 after three.

Paige West returned to start the fourth quarter, and played smart, not picking up her fifth foul. Meanwhile, she hit Angela Standiford on the left baseline to make it 42-28 to start the scoring in the fourth. Landon hit a free throw for Albany, but Madelynn Mattson hit Alba Vozmediario on the right baseline and Paige West hit Madelynn Mattson inside to make it 46-29.

Even the return of Newman did not alter the outcome as Makayla Adwell split two green shirts and hit two free throws, and Gerry Runde hit Madelynn Mattson for a three-point play to make it 51-29 before both teams cleared their benches. Northeast’s ball movement was much better than the first game with Albany, and they were able to pick up their game in the second half. Until the 4:21 mark of the second half, NEN did not commit a single turnover or give up a single offensive board in the second half despite going up against Albany’s 2-2-1 zone press.

Madelynn Mattson had 20 points for NEN. Gerry Runde had 8, Makayla Adwell 7, Paige West 6, Alba Vozmediario 5, Blair Stoll 3, and Angela Standiford and Ilenia Ricci 2.

Madelynn Mattson and Blair Stoll had 1 block each.

Gerry Runde was flying to the ball all night, grabbing it, and ripping it away from defenders as she had a season-high 15 boards for the Bluejays. Blair Stoll had 8, Paige West 7, Makayla Adwell and Madelynn Mattson 5, Anne Schieber 2, and Angela Standiford and Alba Vozmediario 1 each.

Gerry Runde had 6 assists, Paige West had 5, Blair Stoll and Madelynn Mattson 4, and Makayla Adwell and Angela Standiford 1. NEN had 21 assists Wednesday night, compared to 13 the first game.

Blair Stoll had 5 tips. Paige West had 3, Gerry Runde and Anne Schieber 2, and Makayla Adwell and Madelynn Mattson 1.

Paige West had 4 steals. Angela Standiford had 2, and Madelynn Mattson had 1.

David Parman Honored by Softball Teammates, Fellow Coaches

On Sunday, despite the weather, dozens of people gathered at the Sheridan Community Hall to honor David Parman. They were teammates of his from the Sheridan Town Team, Worth County Merchants, Hy-Vee, and Wilson’s Hitching Post along with fellow coaches. Parman was a long-time softball player, coach, and umpire; he also taught and coached basketball at Coffey and coached basketball at Worth County. Kyla (Dowis) McClain said on Facebook that Parman was a good friend and teammate to all. “And the stories,” she posted, “Well, we can’t share many of those things in public.”

A lot of coaching institutions came to honor Parman, including, most notably, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Don Edwards, who led Jefferson’s boys and girls to multiple softball and basketball titles. Marty Albertson, who coached North Nodaway’s football team to its first-ever Highway 275 Title in 1983-84 and coached them to two state playoff appearances, was present. Rob Dowis coached some winning Worth County basketball and softball teams in the 1970’s and was a long-time teacher and administrator in the area. Kirby Dowis started a NEN Girls Golf team from scratch and coached Jacqueline and Michelle Schulte to the State Tournament. Paul Niece coached girls basketball at both North Nodaway and Worth County before becoming a principal.

Mustang Girls Down South Holt for Third Place

North Nodaway’s girls won their second straight last week, beating South Holt 43-22 to take third place at the Fairfax Tournament. The Mustangs had lost by four to Nodaway-Holt, but had gotten back on the winning track against Osborn. Thursday’s game was a makeup game from the week before. The game wasn’t easy despite the score; North Nodaway got off to a strong start against a rapidly improving team in South Holt, which had beaten the Trojans earlier this year. They then had to overcome 15 offensive boards and 18 turnovers along with some foul trouble to hold off the Knights in the second half.

As the snakebit Knights could not score in the first quarter, North Nodaway slowly pulled away despite South Holt’s trapping zone. Keagan O’Riley hit Kristin Herndon on the right side for three, and Kandace Damgar added another to make it 6-0. Kristin Herndon drove down the left baseline and scored after getting a pass from Keagan, Herndon struck again, and then Saylor Brown tipped an errant pass to Keagan O’Riley, who scored at the buzzer to make it 12-0.

Ashley Thompson worked the boards for four points in the second quarter to make it 16-0 before Rayleigh Guyer broke the ice with a free throw for the Knights. Sharpshooter Chloee Prussman hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 18-4, but then Saylor Brown hit Audrey Trimble on the right side, Kristin Herndon added a steal and a drive, and Jadon Dobbins scored off a pass from Herndon before Lynden Prussman got all alone for South Holt to cut it to 24-6 at the half.

Ashley Thompson, Audrey Trimble, and Keagan O’Riley all scored on putbacks to push North Nodaway’s lead up to 30-10, but then foul trouble hurt the Mustangs during the latter part of the third quarter as Kandace Damgar picked up her third foul and Ashley Thompson picked up her third and fourth fouls in succession. Knights’ post player Grace Cotton scored twice and then Rachel Ottman hit from the baseline as South Holt threatened to make a game of it going into the fourth, down only 30-16.

But then Kristin Herndon got a putback and a backdoor look to restore order for North Nodaway and make it 34-16. Chloee Prussman scored from three and connected again after Kandace Damgar hit for North Nodaway to make it 36-21, but then Kristin Herndon hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key after a pass from Keagan O’Riley to make it 39-21. Cotton struck from inside again for South Holt, but Saylor Brown found Audrey Trimble all alone underneath the basket and then Jadon Dobbins scored three down the stretch as North Nodaway pulled away for the victory.

Kristin Herndon had 16 to lead North Nodaway. Ashley Thompson had 8, Audrey Trimble 6, Kandace Damgar and Jadon Dobbins 5, and Keagan O’Riley 4.

Kristin Herndon and Ashley Thompson had 2 blocks for the Mustangs. Kandace Damgar had 1.

Shamrock Girls Score Season High, Beat Gilman City

North Harrison’s girls, which had been finding points hard to come by this year, finally scored a season high with 49 and beat Gilman City 49-10 Thursday in an HDC matchup. They finally seemed to find a formula – Emma Craig got her point total, and then several others chipped in 4-6 points.

Gilman City was overmatched, with only five players, three of them freshmen and two of them sophomores. North Harrison led 11-4 after one quarter and pulled away to a 23-8 lead at the half. They continued to pull away for the rest of the game.

Jacob New Swipes 9 as Tiger Boys Beat Albany

Jacob New swiped nine for the Tigers and Worth County beat Albany in the second time in as many weeks, 44-34 Tuesday. Sister Kristin had seven steals for the girls, so it was a big night for the family. The win improved Worth County to 4-1 in the conference. North Andrew, who had beaten Worth County earlier in the season, has already beaten Pattonsburg, the other contender for the GRC West crown. If Worth County wins out by beating King City and Pattonsburg next week, they will finish second in the conference race.

Tryce Floyd’s 3-pointer put Albany in front 9-5 late in the first quarter, but Jackson Runde kept a possession alive by tipping an offensive board out to Caleb Parman, whose free throws cut it to 9-7 after one. The pace was ragged, with both teams trying to run each other out of the gym and neither team succeeding. Worth County threw the ball away seven times in the first quarter and 21 times for the game.

Neither team could take control in the second. Caleb Parman scored after Ethan Thomas threw an entry pass to Bryant McCord, who skipped it out to Caleb to put Worth County in front 19-15 to start the third, but then Tryce Floyd got the hot hand again and his triple put the home side back in front. Jacob New’s drive put Worth County in front 23-20, but then Albany threatened to take control as Floyd continued to carry the Warriors and they took a 27-23 behind his 3-pointer.

But then some hot shooting by Worth County put them in front for good as back to back threes from Caleb Parman and Alex Rinehart put the Tigers back in front 29-27. Aydan Gladstone threw one into Jaxon Anderson, who banked one home as time expired in the third to put Worth County up 31-27 going into the fourth.

Worth County continued to have the momentum in the third as Jacob New’s putback, Aydan Gladstone’s floater, and Jaxon Anderson’s free throw made it 36-27 with six minutes left. Jordan Poppa cut it to 36-29 for Albany, but free throws from Jaxon Anderson put Worth County in control up 39-31 with 3:47 left.

Jaxon Anderson had 14 for Worth County. Caleb Parman had 11, Jacob New 8, Aydan Gladstone 4, Alex Rinehart 3, and Jackson Runde and Bryant McCord 2.

Shamrock Boys Run Away from Gilman City

North Harrison’s boys ran away from Gilman City Thursday as they picked up a 73-42 win over the Hawks in an HDC matchup. The Shamrocks outscored Gilman City in every quarter as they jumped out to a 19-12 lead after one quarter. They raised it to 42-26 at the half and then continued to pull away in the third and fourth quarters. The two teams, which play football together with Pattonsburg, had played four epic games last year, with the Shamrocks and Hawks splitting two each. But Gilman City was decimated by graduation this year.

Logan Craig had 27 points to lead the Shamrocks. Brett Emig had 23, Steven Willhite 17, and Grant Claycomb and Collin Briggs had 3 each. As a team, North Harrison shot 41% from the field and attempted nine more shots from the field. Gilman City shot 33%.

Anna Gladstone Has Career Night, Propels Tiger Girls Into GRC West Hunt

Anna Gladstone had a career night with 28 points to propel the Tigers to a 59-41 win over Albany Tuesday. The other game, against Pattonsburg, was moved to the 31st due to inclement weather. She had a triple double for the night, as she had 10 boards and 10 tips. Everybody else chipped in and Worth County held off several Albany attempts to rally.

With the win, Worth County is now in position to become the GRC West Tri-Champions should they beat King City at home on January 29th and beat Pattonsburg on the road January 31st. North Andrew had beaten Worth County, and Worth County had beaten Stanberry earlier in the year, so Worth County had to become Stanberry’s biggest fans Tuesday night. The Bulldogs came through with a 53-37 win over North Andrew, with Madi Sager scoring 25 to lead Stanberry.

Neither game will be easy for Worth County, as King City shows an ability to keep coming at teams, while Pattonsburg, behind Webby Bailey, nearly erased a 20-point fourth quarter deficit, scored 31 in the fourth quarter against King City, and fell just short 70-68; Bailey has shown the ability to take over games for the rejuvenated Panthers.

Albany, at .500, was still a challenge for anyone with Gabby Newman carrying the team. They were down two players, as Kayce Messner and Paige Brown were out with injuries. But Abby Landon emerged as a reliable second scoring option for Albany, and kept them in the game in the first half.
Worth County got off to a fast start in Tuesday’s game. After twice nearly imploding similar to what they did in the Stanberry game in the tournament, they found their second wind in the fourth quarter as Albany’s lack of depth hurt them and they wore down.

The Tigers made a concerted effort to go inside, with Anna Gladstone hitting an inside shot and scoring a free throw off a drive. Jessi Badell, after missing a couple of early shots, hit two in the post and then Anna Gladstone’s tip and steal made it 9-5 after Landon had scored five quick points to put Albany up 5-2.

The teams traded buckets until Kristin New lobbed one into Jessi Badell, Anna Gladstone beat the Albany press with a layup, and Regan Allee added a free throw off a steal to make it 17-9. Landon scored backdoor for her ninth point of the quarter to make it 17-11, but then Kaylee McElvain, of all people, hit a 3-pointer, her first-ever in either varsity or junior high competition, to make it 20-11. But Albany fought back at the end of the quarter as Gabby Newman hit a guarded three and Sierra Anthony scored off a steal to make it 20-16 after one.

Newman carried the Warriors on her back to start the second, getting a free throw and then pulling up and hitting a 3-pointer to tie it at 20. Anna Gladstone got loose for a layup after Regan Allee stripped Newman, but Abbey Landon struck back with a three to make it 23-22. Michela Martin’s free throw gave Albany a 24-22 lead.

But then Anna Gladstone carried Worth County on her back the rest of the way, getting 10 points in the period as she would not let the Tigers drop a third straight after consecutive losses to Stanberry and North Andrew to finish the Stanberry Tournament. She cut inside and got a pass from Kristin New to tie it up at 24, and then Kristin New got a steal and got it to Anna. She blew past a green shirt, and a charge/block that could have been called either way went in Anna’s favor, and she hit two free throws to put Worth County in front 26-24. Anna Gladstone kicked out to Kaylee McElvain for one of her deadly baseline jumpers, Jessi Badell hit Gladstone inside, and Gladstone got a putback to make it 32-24.

But a buzzer-beater by Newman, that brought Albany back to within 32-27 at the half, swung the momentum back in the Warriors’ favor. As Worth County went scoreless for the first 4:08 of the third quarter, Abbey Landon scored a pair of free throws to chip away and bring the Warriors back to within 32-29. Jessi Badell hit a driving Anna Gladstone for two free throws, Worth County forced a five seconds call on the ensuing inbounds, and Merrideth Spiers hit Kristin New on a skip pass from the left block to the right wing for a 3-pointer to temporarily take Worth County out of danger at 37-29.

But then Newman carried the Warriors on her back again as she hit Sierra Anthony in transition, scored off a steal, and then hit Landon in transition as the Warriors closed to within 37-35. The turning point came next. Albany got another stop on defense and Gabby Newman had a wide open three-pointer as time was winding down in the third quarter that would have given the Warriors the lead. Anything might have happened, but Newman’s shot missed badly, Haley Hunt got a defensive board in the middle of the paint, and got it out to Anna Gladstone. She converted a 3-point play on the other end, and instead of Worth County being down one, they were up five again. Gladstone took on two green shirts and scored again, and once again the Tigers were out of danger up 42-35 after three.

By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the Warriors were worn down, their shots started missing badly, and Worth County started scoring again. Jessi Badell stripped an Albany player who had just gotten a board and got a layup, and Anna Gladstone got a steal to make it double digits at 46-35, forcing Albany into their fourth timeout. Kaylee McElvain scored on a drive to make it 47-35.
Gabby Newman hit two free throws to make it 47-37, but Kaylee McElvain hit Jessi Badell inside, and then Kaylee McElvain hit a 3-pointer, her second of the night off a pass from Kristin New, to provide the dagger. Anna Gladstone scored after Regan Allee got a steal and aired it out to her to make it 54-37.

Anna Gladstone had 28 points to lead the Tigers. Three hit double figures as Kaylee McElvain had 11 and Jessi Badell had 10. Kristin New had 6, Haley Hunt 2, and Merrideth Spiers and Regan Allee 1.

Anna Gladstone and Jessi Badell had 2 blocks, while Regan Allee and Haley Hunt had 1.

Anna Gladstone had 10 boards. Jessi Badell and Regan Allee had 6, Kaylee McElvain and Merrideth Spiers had 4, Haley Hunt 3, Kristin New and Jill Hardy 2, and Megan Cassavaugh 1.

Kristin New had 5 assists for Worth County. Regan Allee, Kaylee McElvain, and Anna Gladstone had 3, Jessi Badell 2, and Jill Hardy, Merrideth Spiers, Haley Hunt, and Megan Cassavaugh each had 1.

Anna Gladstone had 10 tips for Worth County. Kaylee McElvain had 5, Jessi Badell and Kristin New had 4, Regan Allee 3, and Jill Hardy 1.

Kristin New had 7 steals. Regan Allee had 5, Anna Gladstone 4, and Jessi Badell and Jill Hardy 1 each.

Shopko in Albany to Close March 3rd

The Friday St. Joseph News-Press reported that the Shopko in Albany would close on March 3rd. On January 18th, the Fairmont (MN) Sentinel, which has a Shopko there, reported on some of the details regarding the company. Shopko, a corporate chain based in Green Bay (WI), filed for bankruptcy protection Wednesday. Previously, the store had targeted 38 stores for closure. In Wednesday’s filing, the number increased to 105.

The Sentinel reported that Shopko has been in the process of selling the records of its pharmacies to other store chains, such as Hy-Vee and Kroger. They currently operate 360 stores.

Worth Bridge Not Scheduled For Replacement Until 2021

Last fall, the Missouri Department of Transportation closed the Worth Bridge that connects the towns of Worth and Grant City, citing what they said was significant deterioration. At the time, the DOT said that the earliest they could get to the Worth Bridge was in April of this year. Now, however, in their weekly list of highway improvement projects that they send, they say that replacement of the Worth Bridge will not occur until 2021.

In November, voters rejected a gas tax that would have addressed highway funding shortfalls. There was no organized opposition against it; however, Democratic Congressional Candidate Henry Martin, who supported the measure, said he had heard from people who thought it was a law enforcement tax.
Motorists wishing to go to Worth are being directed to go clear down south to Gentry and then back north to Worth. Motorists have also been using gravel road shortcuts, both at Knox Church and at the County Line Road; efforts by the county to keep those roads up have strained county resources and passage is not feasible during rain or snow.

In his State of the State Address Wednesday, Governor Mike Parson suggested a workaround; he proposed a $351 million bond, funded by revenue savings, to fix 250 bridges across the state, the January 17th News-Press and AP reported. That would free up existing highway funds to cover other projects. The DOT says they have an $8 billion funding shortfall over the next 10 years. The governor is also proposing to set up a $50 million cost-share program for local roads, the News-Press reported.

NEN Boys Lose, but Spencer Weir Scores 1,000th Point

Northeast Nodaway’s boys lost 75-36 to Mound City, one of the top teams in the area; however, Spencer Weir scored his 1,000th career point. The boys had been struggling to win games for the last few years; however, they began to get better with Spencer handling the ball and breaking down defenses. Two years ago, they finally got over 10 wins, and last year, they got a winning season and made it to the second round of districts.

Against Mound City, the game was over early; the Panthers led 18-6 after one and raced out to a 45-17 halftime lead as they have made even good teams look bad this year. Dylan Vore had 12, Spencer Weir and Auston Pride 7 each, Ethan Adwell 4, and Ben Boswell, Mitchell Sherry, and Nate Schieber 2 each.

Bluejay Girls Beat Mound City Behind Mattson’s 25

This was supposed to be Northeast Nodaway’s hell week, the week in which they have to play powerhouses Mound City and Jefferson back to back. But someone forgot to tell Madelynn Mattson, who had a career night with 25 points Tuesday. The Bluejays needed every single one of them as they held off Mound City 39-38. At the Stanberry Tournament, Worth County figured out they could get the ball into post player Jessi Badell, who had a season-high 14 against the Panthers. NEN followed their lead and fed Madelynn early and often as they built up a 19-12 halftime lead.

Mound City, behind the hot hand of Paige Quilty, fought back, getting the deficit down to two after three at 26-24. The Panthers finally tied it up at 34 midway through the fourth. But Northeast found their second wind, relying on Mattson and some timely free throw shooting to take a 39-35 lead late. Mound City hit a meaningless 30-footer at the end for the final score.

For the Bluejays, Mattson had 25, Blair Stoll 6, Makayla Adwell 3, Paige West 3, and Anne Schieber 2. The Bluejays were 12 of 17 from the line.

Mustangs Break Osborn’s Glass Slipper

Osborn’s girls, after having fallen on hard times the past year, were on a mission to have a Cinderella season this year. They got off to a 4-1 start and played some good teams tough. They lost by seven to Tri-County, another team on the rise; they lost 63-41 to East Atchison, and they only lost by 16 to Jefferson. In their home tournament, they caught fire again, winning twice to get to the championship round.

But then the weather intervened and the tournament title game was postponed until Wednesday. Meanwhile, North Nodaway came to town and crashed the Cinderella party, at least for the time being.

Osborn rode all the momentum of their recent tournament run and kept right on playing well, taking a 10-6 lead over North Nodaway after one. But then reality set in; North Nodaway fought back to take a 19-12 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, the Mustangs erupted for 25 points and the game went into running clock territory as North Nodaway went on to win 60-27. The system shock was too great; Polo, with only three wins, went on to beat Osborn 50-35 for the tournament title.

North Nodaway, who was ice cold in its 45-41 loss to Nodaway-Holt in Fairfax, found its shooting touch at just the right time, getting eight 3-pointers in its win. Kristin Herndon had 16, Kandace Damgar 11, Ashley Thompson 9, and Keagan O’Riley had 8. Saylor Brown, a freshman who earned the right to be one of the first players off the bench, had one of her best games so far as a Mustang, also getting 8. Audrey Trimble had 4; Alonna Cross, who started to show some aggression in the Christian game when she came in with the game decided, got on the board with 4.

Kandace Damgar had three 3-pointers. Kristin Herndon and Saylor Brown had 2, and Keagan O’Riley had 1.

Mustang Boys Use Strong Fourth Quarter to Down Osborn

North Nodaway’s boys generally use 5-6 players in their rotation. For Coach Jake Shipman, it’s about finding players that he can trust to play the entire four quarters.

But it was North Nodaway who wore down Osborn Tuesday when they beat them 61-34. They jumped out to a 14-5 lead over Osborn after one. The Wildcats hung around for the next two, playing North Nodaway evenly, trailing 43-30 after three, still within striking distance for the victory-starved Osborn squad. However, North Nodaway pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Osborn 18-4 in the fourth to get the win. Something similar happened in the West Nodaway game, where North Nodaway was able to push their lead into double digits at Fairfax in the fourth.

Arron Coleman had 20 points to lead the Mustangs. Cody Wood had 18, Tyler Bix 11, Ryan Riley 6, Karson Oberhauser 4, and Austin Bird 2. North Nodaway was 6 for 11 from the line. Cody Wood had three triples, while Ryan Riley had two.

Madelynn Mattson Scores 24, Makayla Adwell Scores Season High

Northeast Nodaway rolled to victory over East Harrison 52-34, as they fought back from losing five out of six to win their last two games to go up to 8-5 on the year. It was in the first game of the South Harrison Tournament Monday. East Harrison had every right to expect a close game, but they remain stuck on one win this year after having won 17 last year with nearly the same team. The Bobcats hoped to get things turned around at the start of the year, but there was no rest for the weary, as they fell to Gabby Newman and the Warriors by 19 and the inhospitable South Nodaway gym by 16.

For the Bluejays, they were able to turn things around in their last two games by diversifying their offense. Blair Stoll hit four three-pointers in their 63-37 win over West Nodaway, and Paige West learned to shoot a 3-pointer and hit two Monday against East Harrison. That opened things up for Madelynn Mattson, who matched a career high with 24 Monday. Makayla Adwell played her best game of the year, getting 17, including a strong second half.

Lauren Waddle scored to start off for East Harrison, but Paige West showed her newfound 3-point shooting ability out of an inbounds play and Madelynn Mattson scored from inside to make it 5-2 Northeast. Free throws from Waddle and Hope Ellsworth knotted it up at 5-5, but then Blair Stoll hit a three from the top of the key, Makayla scored off a drive when a defender slipped and fell, and Madelynn Mattson stripped an outlet pass and scored to make it 13-5 before Waddle cut it to 13-7.

Mattson scored from inside and hit two free throws and Makayla Adwell scored off a steal to make it 19-7, but as usual, East Harrison kept hanging around, getting their deficit down to 23-15 at the half as Waddle continued to have the hot hand for the Bobcats.

East Harrison continued to hang around to start the third, but when their best interior defender, Hope Ellsworth, picked up her third foul and sat with her team trailing 30-19, Madelynn Mattson erupted for eight of her ten points in the period. Natayla Selby scored off a drive to make it 33-21, but then Paige West took a charge on her to further sap the energy out of East Harrison as the Bluejays pulled away to a 40-21 lead after three. Adwell’s transition layup with 6:53 gave NEN its biggest lead of 42-21, and East Harrison never got closer than 15.

Madelynn Mattson had 24 to lead NEN. Makayla Adwell had 17, Paige West 8, and Blair Stoll 3.
Madelynn Mattson blocked 2 shots and Alba Vozmediario had 1.

Madelynn Mattson had 13 boards. Paige West had 12, Makayla Adwell 9, Gerry Runde 4, Blair Stoll 3, and Anne Schieber 1.

Paige West had 6 assists. Blair Stoll had 4, Gerry Runde 3, Makayla Adwell 2, and Madelynn Mattson and Anne Schieber 1.

Paige West had 14 tips. Makayla Adwell had 6, Blair Stoll 4, Madelynn Mattson 3, and Gerry Runde and Anne Schieber 2.

Madelynn Mattson had 5 steals. Paige West had 4, Gerry Runde and Makayla Adwell 2, and Blair Stoll, Alba Vozmediario, and Anne Schieber 1.

Three Worth County Athletes Competing for Warrior Wrestling Team

Three Worth County athletes are competing on the Albany wrestling team this year – Jeremy Wimer, Nate Adwell, and Justin Dye. The Warrior wrestling contingent has improved numbers this year, with nine out for the sport, much higher than in years past. Worth County and Albany compete together under a cooperative agreement. Last year, two Worth County athletes, Will Engel and Jeremy Wimer, went to state. Engel went on to sign with Graceland.

Thursday’s meet pitted Albany against three other schools – Mount Ayr, North Andrew, and South Harrison.

In Albany’s meets against North Andrew, Dawson Fansher pinned Nate Doolittle at the 36.5 mark of the first period. Nate Adwell only needed 24 seconds to pin Kiya Mortimore. Sam O’Neal pinned Sae Ezzell late in the first quarter.

The first close match came between Harrison Kerchner (Albany) and Ezra Mohn (North Andrew). Harrison Kerchner got an early takedown, only for Mohn to escape. Kerchner got another takedown and led 4-1 going into the second. He held him down for the entire second frame, finally pinning him at the 1:00 mark in the period.

Against South Harrison, Nate Doolittle drove Timmy Williams hard into the ground early and had the better of the match, pitting him at the 6.5 second mark of the first period.

Nate Adwell had an epic battle with Jaren Van Meter. In the early going, Adwell was taken down by Van Meter, only to escape. Van Meter took him down again, only for Adwell to get a reversal and take control of the match. Adwell was up 8-4, only for Van Meter to fight back with an escape and a takedown to make it 8-7. A three point near fall by Van Meter late in the second frame put him in control up 10-8, and he went on to pin Adwell at the 1:12 mark of the third period.

Cole Ellis pinned Sam O’Neil at the six second mark of the second quarter.

Harrison Kerchner and Parker Chamberlin had another good match. Parker Chamberlin body slammed Kerchner to go up early, but Kerchner got a reversal to tie it at 2-2. Another body slam by Chamberlin seemingly put him in control in the second frame, up 7-5, but then Kerchner got a reversal and then pinned Chamberlin at the one minute mark of the second period for the win.

After Trey Cooper (Albany) was pinned by Kaston Van Meter, Justin Dye took the mat for his first-ever wrestling match, against Holden Hager. Dye got an early takedown against Van Meter, only for him to escape. As the match progressed, Dye wore down and Van Meter won on a disqualification.

Gavin Shoush (Albany) had another good match with Mason Hamilton (South Harrison). A body slam by Shoush seemingly put him in control up 6-2 in the second, but Hamilton got a reversal late in the frame and nearly pinned Shoush, but he was saved by the bell still up 6-4. Shoush got an early takedown in the third and held it for a minute, up 8-4. But then Hamilton got a reversal with 33 seconds. Hamilton held down Shoush for the remainder of the match, but Shoush somehow avoided the pin or the near fall and came away with the 8-6 win.

Albany struggled against Mount Ayr, which has a solid wrestling program. Jeremy Wimer was pinned by Payton Fleharty at the 1:22 mark of the first period. Nate Adwell was pinned by Trae Ehlen at the 1:16 mark of the first. Harrison Kerchner was pinned by Keaton White at the 1:10 mark of the second.

One of the more entertaining matches was between Justin Dye and Josh Cox (Mount Ayr). Wrestling in only his second match ever against a skilled opponent, Dye got the takedown, only for Cox to flip him over and pin him at the 1:01 mark of the first period.

Gavin Shoush got the lone win for Albany, pinning Jarrett Webb at the 49.6 second mark of the first period after a body slam. Nate Doolittle was pinned by Bryce Shaha at the 39.8 mark of the first.

Tiger Boys Drop Braymer in Defensive Struggle

Worth County’s boys overcame two ice cold stretches against Braymer and beat the Bobcats 44-38 Friday thanks to a strong third quarter. Braymer came into the game with four wins , but three out of their last four games were decided by ten points or less. They included a one point loss to Stanberry and a two point loss to King City.

With the win, Worth County got their fourth win of the year. Defense has been the key for the Tiger boys this year; they have won three out of their four games when holding other teams to under 40. They have only won one game when allowing more than that.

Neither side could take control during the first quarter; Aydan Gladstone’s free throws gave Worth County an 11-8 lead with 1:46 left, only for sharpshooter Hunter Heussner to score five straight to put Braymer back on top 13-11. Four straight from Caleb Parman put Worth County on top 15-13 after one.

Jaxon Anderson drove and scored to start the second to give Worth County a two possession lead at 17-13; it was the first one by either side.
