Shamrocks Drop Heartbreaker to Longhorns

North Harrison’s baseball team dropped a heartbreaker Monday evening to Platte Valley 5-4 in extra innings. Torrential rains the night before drenched everywhere else but Guilford, and somehow, the field stayed dry enough for the game to be played.

The Shamrocks, after winning their first-ever tournament on the 13th, won two games handily, downing Mercer/Princeton 16-5 and Grundy County 14-4, with their only blemish being a triple play that they ran into. After having beaten three Class 3 schools this year, North Harrison then played Savannah, only to run into a buzzsaw; the Savages had rung up a 16-1 record, mostly against quality opponents, and were on a three game shutout streak before North Harrison finally plated a run against them.

Somehow, the fallout from that game carried over to Monday’s game, as Longhorn pitcher Trevor McQueen, after North Harrison got two on with one out, started mowing down one Shamrock batter after another in the top of the first. Meanwhile, Tyler Lundy came to the mound for North Harrison and Platte Valley immediately jump on him as Logan Stoll singled and stole second. Trevor McQueen struck out, but Nate Jermain singled Stoll home to make it 1-0.

But then Lundy settled down and pitched his best game ever as a Shamrock; the vast field at Guilford is 330 out to right and a little farther out to center. With the wind blowing in, it is one of the most pitcher-friendly parks and Lundy took full advantage, constantly pounding the plate and mixing in a breaking ball just enough to keep Longhorn batters off balance. The Longhorns sprayed one hit after another against Lundy, but North Harrison overcame their hitting woes by making enough plays in the field to stay in the game.

After they scored in the first, Platte Valley looked to add to their lead in the inning, but Logan Huitt ran down Dalton Luke’s drive to the deepest part of the park in center and catcher Brett Emig shot down Jermain trying to steal to get out of the inning.

It looked like Lundy’s efforts would be in vain as McQueen hypnotized the Shamrock batters, keeping them standing and looking through the second and third. But things changed after the Longhorns failed to break it open in the third after loading the bases with one out, as Lundy kept right on pounding the zone and trusting his fielders, being rewarded when Nate Jermain popped out to Logan Craig at first and Dalton Luke grounded out to Grant Claycomb at short.

That seemed to swing the momentum back in North Harrison’s favor in the fourth as Brett Emig hit a screamer that sliced away from Spencer McQueen in left for a double. Logan Craig singled to left, McQueen let it get away from him in the rough outfield, and Emig came home to tie it at 1-1. Platte Valley went back on top in their half as Tanner Davis singled and Quentin Murphy singled him to third. Lundy kept right on pounding the zone as Taylar Freemyer was called out on strikes. Mason Kelmel grounded into a force at second to score Davis, but Spencer McQueen’s potential extra base hit down the left field line was run down by Lane Huitt to end the inning.

Trevor McQueen ran out of pitches and gave way to Koby Stoll late in the fourth. In the fifth, Stoll froze two green shirts just like McQueen did, but then Grant Claycomb beat out an infield hit with two outs to keep the fifth inning alive. Stoll began fighting the strike zone, walking the bases full before Logan Craig crushed one and doubled off the left field wall to swing the game in North Harrison’s favor at 4-2.

Platte Valley got a run back in their half of the fifth after Koby Stoll doubled into the left field corner. The glove of freshman third baseman Brandon Hamilton nearly got the Shamrocks out of the inning as he made two sparkling defensive plays on the heart of Platte Valley’s order, on Trevor McQueen and Nate Jermain, to get to two outs. Dalton Luke doubled off the wall in left field to bring home Stoll and make it 4-3. But once again, North Harrison bailed out Lundy as Lane Huitt hustled after the ball and threw to the cutoff man, Grant Claycomb. Grant made a perfect relay throw to Hamilton to retire Luke trying to stretch a double into a triple for the third out to preserve the lead.
But then North Harrison could not add to their lead as Logan Huitt, on third with one out in the seventh, tried to score on a wild pitch. He normally makes those plays, but was cut down at the plate to kill a potential rally.

Grant Claycomb came on in relief on Lundy to start the seventh, and struck out the first two batters and got Seth Patton down to his final strike. But then he began fighting the strike zone, missing a pair of close pitches and walking him and then plunking Nate Jermain to keep Platte Valley’s chances alive. Dalton Luke took full advantage as his pop fly to right field dropped in for a base hit and Platte Valley scored the tying run.

North Harrison couldn’t score in the eighth, and then Quentin Murphy crushed a single to right center field. Taylar Freemeyer laid down a perfect bunt to move pinch runner Patrick O’Connor over, and Mason Kelmel singled home the winning run.

Mustangs Drop Senior Night Heartbreaker

North Nodaway gave North Platte all they could handle for their Senior Night Wednesday, but came up short in a 4-3 heartbreaker. The Mustangs had every reason to expect a close game with the Panthers, who were coming in with a 4-11 record in Class 2. The game came out like the NEN/East Atchison game from Tuesday, in which the Bluejays took an early lead, but could not make it stand up. Like the NEN/East Atchison game, North Platte used a three run blast to take control and make the lead stand up, although North Nodaway fought until the end.

Arron Coleman started for the first time all year, although he had pitched in relief for North Nodaway. North Nodaway skipper Jake Shipman had been looking for someone to throw strikes all year, and finally got some as he went for six quality innings.

Neither team could get anything going for the first inning and a half. In the top of the second, center fielder Logan Keho made a running catch to deny extra bases to Joel Smyser, while second baseman Dalton Smyser made a great heads-up play by coming up with Dayne Carpenter’s shot off Coleman’s glove for an out.

North Nodaway had trouble with Caine Huffman’s big breaking ball, but on an 0-2 count, Ryan Riley turned on one in the second. Logan Keho reached on an error when first baseman let a pop fly drop in and it got away, and everybody was safe. Andrew Blackford struck out, and Riley was picked off second; North Nodaway ran its way out of some runs Wednesday, which was a factor in the loss. But Drexel Richardson walked to keep the inning alive and Jordan Jenkins singled to right, too shallow to score anyone. Tyler Bix then singled to center to score two, and the Mustangs were on top 2-0.

First baseman Ryan Riley made a shoestring catch of Jacob Oliver’s line drive in the third to take extra bases away. In its half of the third, North Nodaway had a chance to add to its lead, but ran its way out of the inning. Arron Coleman doubled a hung breaking ball to the wall in right center and Dalton Smyser reached on an error when his pop fly dropped in front of the third baseman and rolled under his legs to put runners on first and second. It looked all set up for a big inning, but then Coleman misjudged a pitch in the dirt and catcher Joel Smyser scooped it up and easily threw him out at third. Ryan Riley struck out; Logan Keho walked, but Andrew Blackford grounded out to end the inning with no runs coming across.

In the fourth, North Platte took advantage as Coleman began fighting the strike zone and walked Andrew Hernandez and Blake Gibson to start the inning. He came back to get Kaleb Pendlay on a fly ball to Keho, but then Jesse Martin crushed one so hard that even the vast North Nodaway field couldn’t hold it and North Platte was in front 3-2. North Platte threatened to add to their lead after shortstop Jordan Jenkins was played by Joel Smyser’s chopper. But Dayne Carpenter’s shot off Coleman’s glove was fielded perfectly by Andrew Blackford, and he got the out. Coleman blew one by Matrix Large to get out of the inning with no further damage done.

The Panthers added to their lead in the fifth to make it 4-2 when Andrew Hernandez stole third and came home on Tyler Bix’s throwing error.

In the Mustang fifth, Panther reliever Andrew Hernandez walked Ryan Riley and Logan Keho with one out. But there was a scary moment as Andrew Blackford grounded into a force play at third. Ryan Riley slid hard into third trying to break up a double play and got his hand stepped on, and he was finished for the game. Drexel Richardson walked, but Jordan Jenkins flied out for the third out.
There were some anxious moments in the North Platte sixth as Karson Oberhauser was forced to play out of position at first, and Dakota Wray had to come in to play left field. But Tyler Bix threw Joel Smyser out stealing with one out in the inning. Dayne Carpenter hit a sinking line drive that Wray hustled after, but his try at a shoestring catch came up short, and it dropped in for a double. Matrix Large hit a chopper that looked like trouble, but third baseman Andrew Blackford got a perfect jump on it and threw out Large by half a step at first.

Tyler Bix hit a pop fly single that dropped in behind second, and Karson Oberhauser doubled into the left field gap to put runners on second and third. A long single could tie it, but North Platte intentionally walked Coleman, and Dalton Smyser grounded into a 4-6-3 double play as a run scored to make it 4-3. Wray walked to keep the inning going, but Logan Keho got a called third strike.

It looked like North Platte might add to their lead as Arron Coleman was out of pitches and Andrew Blackford came into pitch. But after giving up a single to Jacob Oliver, he settled down as Caine Huffman flied out to Logan Keho, moved from center to left field. Andrew Hernandez was called out on strikes, and Blake Gibson grounded out. With two outs in the seventh, pitcher Kaleb Pendlay plunked Jordan Jenkins and Tyler Bix on consecutive pitches, but Karson Oberhauser was called out on strikes to end the game.

Recognized on Senior Night were Arron Coleman, Keith Irwin, and manager Makayla Cross, who had played with the team the previous two years.

All Worth County FBLA Students Medal at State

The Worth County FBLA chapter took six students to the State Leadership Conference in Springfield, MO April 14-16th.   For the first time in many years all Worth County students medalled at State.  Missouri FBLA has over 14,000 members total with over 5,000 members competing at state.  Only those placing in the top ten of their event are awarded a medal and only the top four get to advance to nationals.

Worth County FBLA had one team advance to Nationals.  Sophomores: Tate Welch, Keelin Engel, and Jill Hardy placed 2nd in the state of their competition called E-Business.  The team was tasked with creating a unique business idea that could be marketed and sold online.  Their business was called Midwest Survival that specialized in selling camping survival vacations using their own land here in Worth County.  In addition to creating a working website they also had to give a 7 minute presentation that discussed the planning and development of the website.  The team hopes to compete in San Antonio, Texas at the end of June but due to conflicts with National FCCLA it might not be logistically possible.

Also placing at state, for the second year in the row was junior Zoey Morin.  Zoey competed in Database Design and Applications.  This test has two parts, one where she took a 1 hour test over database concepts and terms and another 1 hour test where she had to create a physical database with tables, queries, and reports.  Our final team placing at state consisted of Juniors Lauren Moore and Meredith Spiers.  Lauren and Meredith competed in the competition of Public Service Announcement where they created a 30 second video over the importance of developing soft skills in young employees.  In addition to the video they gave a five minute presentation that showcased their video along with their planning and development process. While at state the FBLA members got to experience workshops, keynote speakers, some laser tag and almost made it out of an Escape Room.  Next up for our local FBLA will be electing next year's officers and selling our annual Palisade Colorado Peaches.

Shorthanded NEN Sees 27 Game Win Streak End

A shorthanded NEN squad saw their 27 game regular season winning streak come to an end last Tuesday as they fell to East Atchison 8-4. They were without Spencer Weir (flu); without him, they were not the same hitting team that they have been for most of the year.

The Bluejays have to put their 275 conference title celebrations on hold. They have already clinched at least a share of conference, but they must still invade DeKalb on May the 7th to win the title outright; DeKalb is much better this year, with four wins under their belt as of last Tuesday evening. Platte Valley and East Atchison both had two conference losses as of last Tuesday evening and still have to play each other one more time. Platte Valley won the first game between the two schools.

NEN clung to a lead throughout most of the game, but then all hell broke loose in the sixth and seventh innings as the Wolves took advantage of NEN’s decimated lineup and Jake McEnaney got the complete game win.

With two outs in the first, Chet Spire doubled into the left field corner and then Ethan Adwell singled just past short to bring him home to give NEN a 1-0 lead that would stand up for a while.

In the meantime, the Bluejays made some outstanding plays in the field as Lane Dack, a freshman forced into action at second, made a great catch of Gus Hurst’s line drive in the first; later, catcher Ethan Adwell threw Jake McEnaney out stealing third.

Chet Spire started for NEN and cruised through four innings, but had to give way as Northeast had to save him for an upcoming tournament in King City, a round robin between North Platte, NEN, and King City.

In the bottom of the fourth, NEN added to their lead as Ethan Adwell hit a home run to dead center to make it 2-0. Adwell came on in the fifth and got through the heart of the order in the fifth. East Atchison had a murderer’s row for their top three; he had to get through McEnaney, Hurst, and Gage McAdams one more time. But it didn’t happen.

In the sixth, with one out and runners on first and second, Tyler Brown hit what could have been an inning ending double play ball to Adwell at the mound. He threw to second for the first, but Northeast threw the ball to first away as Keaton Williams crossed the plate with East Atchison’s first run. The Wolves’ #9 hitter, Zachary Garrison, came up, but he walked and the heart of the order came up. East Atchison made them pay as third baseman Ben Boswell, out of position at third instead of his normal second base position, couldn’t handle McEnaney’s hard grounder that tied it up at 2-2. Gus Hurst followed with a three run blast to dead center field to put the Wolves in control at 5-2.

Chet Spire led off the NEN sixth with a home run to give them a chance, but once again, NEN could not get out of the seventh inning despite #9 hitter Zachary Garrison at the plate and two outs. East Atchison loaded the bases with one out, but Chace Atkins, pressed into service in left field, made a great catch to rob extra bases from Tyler Brown. It was the second such play Atkins made; he robbed Tony Skeen of an opposite field extra base hit in the fifth. But it didn’t matter as Garrison squibbed one down the third base line and nobody had a play on it as a run scored. The Wolves’ murderers row came up and McEnaney singled to drive in a run and Hurst walked to force in another as East Atchison led 8-3.

Auston Pride hit a screamer fair into the left field corner for a double to start off the NEN seventh. Lane Dack, who improved with every at bat, nonetheless popped out to Tyler Brown at second; Brown made several lights-out plays of NEN hits that were right on the button. Levi Boulting grounded out and Garrison, in right, nearly threw Ben Boswell out at first, but Ben barely beat it out as Brayden Munns (running for Pride) crossed home to make it 8-4. Chet Spire came up to bat and got an intentional pass despite Ethan Adwell, who already had one home run, coming up to the plate. Had he gotten on, things would have gotten interesting with the tying run coming up, but he hit it hard but right into a force at third for the final out.

Mustangs Spoil West Nodaway’s Return Home; Win 11-9 as Rockets Remain Winless; Logan Keho Gets Win

Monday’s battle featured two teams headed in the wrong direction. North Nodaway had started off improved over last year, going only 3-4, but scoring six or more runs in all but one of their games. But after a gutwrenching 21-9 loss to Northeast Nodaway, after having given the Bluejays all they could handle, they went into a tailspin, dropping their next five. All were by 10 or more runs, and they did not score more than three in any of them.

West Nodaway remained winless after Monday. After showing some promise at North Harrison and then giving Platte Valley all they could handle, they finally returned to their home field after having to play elsewhere due to the renovation of their diamond. But after a promising start for the Rockets, they fell behind to North Nodaway. They clawed back against the Mustangs, only to fall two runs short 11-9.

The new field at Burlington Junction faces the same direction as the old, but is bigger and they moved it towards the east road to avoid some overhanging wires. The dimensions are 300 down each line and around 320 to dead center, which kept the ball in the yard, but led to a lot of balls being hit in the gaps and going for extra bases despite the wind howling in from the north.

West Nodaway sent Parker Ogle up to pitch, and he quickly got the first two outs, only for the ball to start flying off the bats for both teams the rest of the game. Karson Oberhauser caught hold of a breaking ball and drove it into the gap in left field fair past third. Left fielder Gabe Goff got there, only for it to carom off his glove and over the fence for a ground rule double thanks to the short foul ground in the outfield. Arron Coleman tripled into the right center field gap, digging a pitch out of the dirt. He came home on a wild pitch; it is a long ways from the plate to the backstop at West Nodaway, which will lead to a lot of runs off wild pitches and passed balls.

Ryan Riley got in trouble for North Nodaway and couldn’t get out of the first, fighting the strike zone. Parker Ogle shot a single off Arron Coleman’s glove at first and then Hunter Dawson and Gabe Goff walked to load the bases. Dylan Carden dug one out of the dirt and singled to center to score two. Jacob Flint walked. Mason Chitwood struck out on a big breaking ball, but Jonathan Rohr walked to force in a run to put West Nodaway up 3-2. Logan Keho came in to pitch, and at first, nothing changed as James Graham walked to force in another run. But then a change struck out Bryan Hyatt and Tyler Bix, who picked off two NEN runners in Ravenwood, picked Jacob Flint off third to bail out his team and end the first.

It didn’t seem to matter at first, as all hell threatened to break loose for the Mustangs. Parker Ogle dug one of Keho’s pitches out of the dirt and into center for a base hit and stole second and third. Hunter Dawson walked and Keho’s pickoff throw to third got away from Arron Coleman and Ogle scored to make it 5-2. A hit and run single vacated the shortstop position and Gabe Goff singled to left, putting runners on first and second. Karson Oberhauser made a running catch in center field of Dylan Carden’s drive that would have been extra bases for the first out, but Jacob Flint singled to center to score one. Mason Chitwood flied out to Drexel Richardson in right and West Nodaway’s hit and run backfired as second baseman Andrew Blackford, who was covering, was positioned perfectly behind the bag at second to catch Jonathan Rohr’s pop fly, which otherwise would have dropped in for a base hit.

North Nodaway, down 6-2 at that point, batted around in the third to get back in the game. Jordan Jenkins singled fair past third and Tyler Bix walked. Karson Oberhauser forced Jenkins at third, but Arron Coleman singled fair past first to score Bix for the first run and put Oberhauser on third. Coleman stole second. Dalton Smyser grounded out to pitcher Parker Ogle, but second baseman Zayla Carlson misplayed Ryan Riley’s chopper, which bounded into right field as two runs scored. Logan Keho walked and Andrew Blackford hit a drive to deep right center field. Center fielder Dylan Carden chased it on the dead run, but couldn’t get it and it rolled away along the fence towards the right field corner. When the dust had settled, Blackford was at third with a triple and the Mustangs were on top 7-6.

The Mustangs got some insurance runs in the fourth with one out as Tyler Bix walked, Karson Oberhauser was hit by a pitch, and a passed ball moved them to second and third. A wild pitch got away from catcher Jacob Flint, and the long backstop cost West Nodaway, as Bix came in to score and Oberhauser took third. Arron Coleman walked and stole second, and Dalton Smyser reached on an error when first baseman Mason Chitwood dropped a throw, scoring both runners to make it 10-6.
The Rockets could not score in the fifth as Mason Chitwood led off with a walk. But then Keho settled down and struck out Jonathan Rohr and James Graham, and then Tyler Bix picked Chitwood off first, for his second pickoff of the game. He nearly picked off a third runner in the first inning, but Gabe Goff was able to escape a rundown and scramble back to third.

Another insurance run came home in the sixth when Karson Oberhauser singled to left with one out. He got a short leadoff from first, but stole second safely and Flint’s throw got away as Oberhauser took third. Arron Coleman doubled over left fielder Gabe Goff’s head to score Oberhauser to make it 11-6.

West Nodaway rallied in the bottom of the sixth when Parker Ogle and Hunter Dawson were hit by a pitch with one out. Gabe Goff, who has shot up the weight charts for Musket football, put a charge in one; the wind kept it in the yard, but it still dropped in and rolled to the right center field wall for a triple to score both runs. Karson Oberhauser misjudged Dylan Carden’s fly ball in center and it dropped behind him for a base hit to make it 11-9 and bring up the tying run with one out. But then Jacob Flint hit hard, but right at Arron Coleman at third, who got the second out at first. Mason Chitwood hit a towering pop fly behind the plate; at most other parks, it would have dropped behind the backstop foul. But despite the wind pushing it that way, the long backstop helped North Nodaway as catcher Tyler Bix had just enough room to catch it for the third out.

West Nodaway had one last chance in the seventh, but Jonathan Rohr grounded out hard to Arron Coleman at third. Logan Keho blew one by James Graham for a third strike, but got down in the count against Bryan Hyatt 3-1. Had he gotten on, the tying run was coming to the plate, and anything could have happened with Parker Ogle, Hunter Dawson, and Gabe Goff all coming up. But Keho threw a big breaking ball and located it perfectly for strike two, and then threw a perfect pitch at the knees for a called third strike to end the game.

Bluejays Top 20 Runs in Rout of West Nodaway

Northeast Nodaway’s baseball team won its 27th straight regular season game, downing winless West Nodaway 21-2 Thursday afternoon. A forecasted rain did not materialize, and West Nodaway did not have their field rebuilt, so the game was moved to NEN. Previously, the Bluejays had moved their home game with the Rockets to North Nodaway due to field conditions in Ravenwood.

West Nodaway had shown some promise in recent games despite their winless record; they had lost 15-14 to a solid Green City squad at North Harrison and a 14-11 heartbreaker to Platte Valley, who is a better team than what they showed against NEN the week before.

The Bluejays did not get the school record for runs Thursday; they had 24 against DeKalb during the 2016-2017 season, a 24-6 victory. But they were able to get the record for biggest margin of victory at 19 runs. The win clinches at least a tie for the conference championship, their sixth straight banner on the wall for the Bluejays. NEN has two games remaining, while every other team in the conference has at least two conference losses. Platte Valley beat East Atchison 3-2 earlier in the year, while the Bluejays have beaten East Atchison 10-3 early in the year. NEN has beaten Platte Valley twice this year.

NEN has scored 10 or more runs in every game this year besides their first game, a 4-2 squeaker over Platte Valley. Only three teams have gone the distance against the Bluejays, as of the completion of Thursday’s game. The knock on the Bluejays this year has been the fact that they play on a short field and can hit balls out of the yard which either fall in for singles or are long outs elsewhere. But they have shown the ability to score on big fields as well; they scored 19 and 21 runs in two games on North Nodaway’s field. They scored 15 and 10 runs on North Platte’s field in their tournament win there earlier this year. Conversely, during NEN’s first two years of existence, it was the other team timing it and crushing it out of NEN’s tiny field.

West Nodaway had every expectation of doing better against the Bluejays; they were showing some promise after a winless start, and they had been playing better the last two games. They sent up Jacob Flint, who had thrown a no-hitter against North Nodaway last year. But with the wind howling out to center field on a cold, blustery day, the Bluejays had little trouble against him. Spencer Weir hit a home run into the ditch behind center field to start the game. Levi Boulting walked and Chet Spire singled. Flint threw a big breaking ball to strike out Ethan Adwell, but then Reed McIntyre singled to right to score Boulting and moved Spire up to third. McIntyre stole second.

From there, the floodgates opened as Spencer Gray hit a pop fly that dropped in front of left fielder Gabe Goff to score two. Maverick Price, who has a way of being a human magnet that attracts baseballs somehow, got plunked yet again and a four-pitch walk to Auston Pride loaded the bases.
A huddle temporarily stopped the bleeding as Ben Boswell grounded into a force at home for the second out of the inning. But then Spencer Weir reached on third baseman Bryan Hiatt’s bobble and Levi Boulting hit a grand slam that barely cleared the wall in left, pushed out by the raging wind.

Ten straight Bluejays would reach safely as they teed off on Flint. Chet Spire singled and Ethan Adwell homered to center. Reed McIntyre reached as the shortstop lost it in the sun and Spencer Gray was hit by a pitch. McIntyre stole third and scored when catcher Parker Ogle threw it away, allowing Gray to take second. Maverick Price singled to right center to score Gray and the wind wreaked havoc again as it blew Auston Pride’s fly ball out of reach of the second baseman for a base hit to put runners on first and third. Ben Boswell walked to load the bases and Spencer Weir doubled into the left field corner to score two and put the Bluejays up 15-0 after one.

Ethan Adwell pitched and went the distance as the Bluejays were able to save their arms for the showdown with East Atchison Tuesday. With one out in the first, Gabe Goff singled, but Adwell recovered to get Parker Ogle to chase a big breaking ball for the second out. Dylan Carden singled up the middle into center, but Adwell got Jacob Flint to chase a pitch that darted into the dirt for the third out.

The strike zone got exponentially bigger in the second and third inning for NEN, but they were still able to put runs on the board. Facing Hunter Dawson, they got back to back jacks in the second as Chet Spire hit a home run between the center field foul poll and the tree, while Ethan Adwell hit his second of the day, a shot which just cleared the left field foul pole. With two outs in the West Nodaway second, Bryan Hiatt was hit by a pitch from Adwell, only for catcher Chet Spire to throw him out stealing after a late break on a passed ball for the third out.

NEN teed off in the third inning despite the expansive strike zone as Auston Pride walked and they bunched up three straight singles to score two runs out of that. Chet Spire struck out, but then they bunched up three more singles to score two more. Gabe Goff’s two run shot in the third accounted for West Nodaway’s lone tallies.

Ashley Rush Sworn Into Worth County School Board; Teachers & Coaches Hired

Ashley Rush was sworn into the Worth County School Board Thursday, as was returning incumbent Rodney Brown. Rush replaces Les New, who did not seek reelection. There are now four women serving on the Worth County School Board – Rush, Amanda Gilland, Amber Monticue, and Tish Warner.

All previous officers were retained by the board. Tyler Steele will continue as Board President, Amber Monticue Vice-President, Amanda Gilland Treasurer, and Kandy Sorenson will continue to serve as Secretary.

Stephanie Jumps of the American Heart Association recognized the Worth County Kids Heart Challenge, also known as Jump Rope for Heart. Recognized were Nurse Amanda Campbell and Kaydence Downing, who raised over $1,000. The program raised over $4,480, which is disproportionate for a county of Worth County’s size.

Cody and Tonya Mullock requested a change in school district boundaries so their kid can go to Kindergarten in Worth County. They live in Worth County, near Oxford, but they live in the Northeast Nodaway portion of the county.

The land parcel in question went over to the NEN School District at the request of the person who lived there at the time following the consolidation of the Grant City and Sheridan School Districts in 1976. Since then, the rules for changing school district boundaries have become more strict. The Mullocks would need to circulate a petition and get it signed by voters in both school districts and pay for the election. It would have to be signed by a certain percentage of voters, and it would have to be passed by both school districts. The other option for them would be to request that the Worth County School waive tuition. The school does so on a case by case basis.

Revenues and attracting qualified teachers were discussed. Revenues for the school are forecast to decline by 2% in coming years, due to a decline in enrollment. That means that the school will have to cover a $100,000 to $200,000 shortfall in the budget. The goal is for the school to have 25% of its annual expenses in reserves; it is forecast to be 36% for the end of the current school year and 29.87% for the upcoming school year.

Board member Tyler Steele reported that a school finance committee looked into what could be done and discussed raises versus offering more health insurance.

It was decided to focus on raises, since it was more likely to attract new teachers to the county. Worth County has one of the lowest tax levies in the area; they last did a tax levy increase in 1991, when they raised the levy to the present level. At the time, the school was in a financial crisis, and the state had identified the school as a “financially stressed district.” As part of their efforts to pass a levy, the school promised voters that they would not increase any expenses. The levy passed. As part of their efforts to get more money into the school, they added a school breakfast program to get more federal dollars. The school cooks at the time demanded more pay for more work, and walked off the job after the school refused, citing their promise to voters not to increase expenses.

Several years later, the school successfully passed a Proposition C rollback waiver, raising revenues that got the school out of the hole. Since then, the school has built up around $1.2 million in reserves; however, starting teachers salaries have not always kept up with other schools. The school was able to achieve cost savings thanks to retirements; however, there have been fewer and fewer retirements recently. The school has been able to pass some bond issues in recent years; however, that is a short-term fix and commits the school to repaying loans for an extended period of time.

Currently, teacher’s salaries make up 85% of the operating budget. The school can reduce their deficit in the short term by committing less money to the building fund, which pays for projects like the parking lot and gym; however, that money will be needed down the road anyway. The school currently has textbooks that are over 20 years old. Superintendent Dr. Matt Martz says the school does not need to pass a levy yet, but needs to develop a plan. “I don’t want taxes raised, but I want us to have a school we can be proud of,” he said.

The school board set the starting date for school next year for August 22nd. The board switched the software provider to Software Unlimited. The board switched the health insurance to Missouri Elementary Trust. The board renewed the contract with Great Western Bank to serve as the bank for the school; board member Amber Monticue abstained. The board voted to retain Westbrook as the school auditor at a cost of $7,950 a year. The board voted to continue to use Pitney Bowes as their postage meter provider at a cost of $113/quarter. The board approved a Solid Waste grant that is being written by Julia Wideman, who is supplementing the greenhouse project with a composting program. The matching cost for the school will be $561.

The board voted to rehire non-certified staff for the 2019-2020 school year, with board member Tyler Steele abstaining. Hired or rehired were Jina Jackson, Mindy Carlson, Darrin Drury, Beth Martz, Frances Dowis, Amanda Campbell, Ayrica Fletchall, David Petersen, Peggy Richardson, Christie Petersen, Ronald Petersen, Anita McClellan, Pam Parman, Kandi Hughes, Donna Mae Hiatt, Jeannie Fletcher, Ron Ford, Larry Richardson, Sharon Nonneman, Loren Jackson, Ann Adams, Dale Healy, Bill Staton, and Andy Welch.

PSC Approves Permit for United Services to Provide Sewer in Maryville Area

The Missouri Public Service Commission has granted United Services, Inc., a certificate of convenience and necessity (CCN) to construct, install, own, operate and maintain sewer systems for the public in unincorporated areas of Andrew and Nodaway counties.

United Services, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Electric Cooperative, Inc.   The Commission granted a CCN determining: 1) There is a need for the service; 2) United Services, Inc. is qualified to provide the proposed service; 3) United Services, Inc. has the financial ability to provide the service; 4) United Services, Inc.’s proposal is economically feasible; and 5) The service promotes the public interest.

Five of the sewer systems serving approximately 70 customers are located near Maryville.  One sewer system, serving approximately 30 customers, is located near Savannah.  Four sewer systems serving approximately 190 customers are located near St. Joseph, Missouri.  In this case, United Services, Inc. proposes to retain existing sewer rates for customers at this time.

Nursing Home Board Seeks Two New Directors

The Worth County Care & Rehab Center is seeking two board members. One is for the East Fletchall Township position; the other is for the Smith Township (Allendale) and North Allen (Denver) area. Previous board members Don Null and Patti Spainhower did not seek reelection this year. Current board members are Scott Houk, Kim Sanders, Jim Larson, and Susan Tucker.

The State Minimum Wage Bill, which was approved by voters last year, will mean an estimated $79,643.00 in increased wage costs for the facility annually by 2023, according to figures provided by Board President Scott Houk. This does not include any across the board raises that the board may vote to give employees. The cost increases include $13,186 in 2020, $18,830 in 2021, $23,452 in 2022, and $24,175 in 2023. For now, the facility will adjust private pay rates to cover the expenses.

The board reorganized at their regular meeting Wednesday. Scott Houk was reelected Board President, while Jim Larson was voted Vice-President by the board.

The facility is running a $43,000 profit for this year, including a $9,691.24 profit in March.
The facility is seeking a new van. The old one, which was obtained 10 years ago, is awkward to drive, especially in windy conditions. Economic Developer Gene Auten is looking into grants.

Administrator Kelly Summa reported that she had talked to Nodaway County Economic Development and that they were still committed to funding the Alzheimer’s Program. When the required security locks are put on the doors and staff training is complete, the facility will begin marketing the program.

Board member Kim Sanders reported that there were people who were dedicating rows to the new Farm to Table Program that the facility offers. She said that she would work on decorating the flower beds for the facility.

The census was at 22 this month; there were two discharges. There is one Part B patient, and ten patients using the Outpatient program.

The facility got a complaint to the state this month. The state came and did an inspection and found that it was unsubstantiated.

The mowing bid for this year went to Kevin Kobbe.

The facility now offers two new services. WoundCare Plus helps monitor wounds by residents. MediTelecare will now provide monthly psychiatric services to residents. Both are covered by insurance, and do not cost the facility.

The facility got an unusually expensive water bill from the city and could not figure out why they were using 190,000 gallons instead of their usual 55,000 gallons of water. They fixed seven leaky toilets. At one point, they thought they had the problem isolated, but it turned out to be an outgoing drain instead of an incoming pipe. Recently, the water usage went back to normal.

The facility received two large donations recently. One was from memorials in memory of the late Venita Jennings, which totaled $275. Jerry Cook donated $1,000 to be used for the Therapy Program.

The facility recently took cards and cookies to area healthcare providers, including in Maryville, Albany, Bethany, Grant City, and Stanberry.
