Parker Crabtree got two hits and Gilman City beat Grundy County 11-1 Thursday, meaning they have one more HDC Conference game to play, against Braymer. Grundy County showed a lot of improvement over previous years, rising off the conference doormat. But the Hawks broke it open in the fifth to score the final five runs.
The Hawks are loaded from one through five in the order. How they do offensively depends on how the rest of their lineup does, and Parker came through with two hits and two runs batted in. Khloey Sperry went deep for the second straight game, going two for four with a home run. Tenley Griffith got two hits, including a triple, and stole three bases. Alli Burke and Avery Gregg also got hits. Alli Burke, Avery Gregg, and Parker Crabtree each stole bases.
Tenley Griffith had another solid outing, giving up only three hits, striking out ten, and got solid play behind her as the Hawks played errorless ball. Grundy County had seven errors.
Ellie Smith made a catch in right field for the third out to kill a Grundy County rally in the first.
Avery Gregg drew first blood for the Hawks when she hit a line drive to center that got away. She was able to circle the bases before they could get it in to make it 1-0. Tenley Griffith was plunked and stole second. Alli Burke singled her home to make it 2-0. Hailey McClure struck out, but then Burke stole second and Parker Crabtree singled her home to make it 3-0. All of Gilman City's blows in the first came with two strikes.
Hawk third baseman Hailey McClure caught a pop fly in the second inning.
Khloey Sperry singled with one out in the second and Avery Gregg beat out an infield hit to put runners on first and second. Tenley Griffith crushed a triple to right field to make it 5-0.
Tenley Griffith plunked a batter to start the third and later gave up a single, but struck out three batters to get out of the inning.
Grundy got on the board in the fourth as Allnut singled to start the fourth. She stole second and third and came home on Carver's groundout to cut the Panther deficit to 5-1.
Gilman City got the run back in their half when Tenley Griffith turned on the first pitch and singled to start the inning. She stole second and Alli Burke grounded out to advance her to third. Hailey McClure grounded out to score Griffith to make it 6-1. It was the first of two sac hits for McClure that brought in a run.
The lower part of the Hawk order was coming up in the fifth, but Ellie Smith reached on an error with one out and Khloey Sperry took full advantage, crushing an inside the park home run to score two and make it 8-1. Avery Gregg reached on an error and stole second. Tenley Griffith reached first on an error and Gregg came all the way around to score to make it 9-1. Alli Burke reached first on a dropped pop fly as Griffith took third. Hailey McClure, normally a power hitter, laid down a perfect sac bunt as Griffith scored and Burke took second to make it 10-1. Parker Crabtree beat out an infield hit for her second hit and Burke crossed home to get the game called on the ten run rule.
