Jim Scanlon, Erle Bennett to be Inducted Into Missouri Sports Hall of Fame

Jim Scanlon and Erle Bennett will be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, November 3rd.

Scanlon began his basketball coaching career at Union Star and went on to coach at North Harrison from 1977 to 1979. From there, he went on to coach at Hamilton, Benton, and Rock Bridge in Columbia, where he has served since 1983. In 2019, Scanlon, after coming close several times, finally got his state title with Rock Bridge. He has a record of 796-241 throughout his years of coaching basketball. He was a 1969 graduate of Breckinridge High School, where he was an all-state basketball player. Scanlon retired from teaching Physical Education at Rock Bridge, but will continue to coach them in basketball.

Erle Bennett started off on the Nodaway-Holt coaching staff, and then moved to North Nodaway, where he served as Marty Albertson’s assistant for the 1983-84 275 Conference Champions. He stayed for the 1984 campaign and then coached at Worth County from 1985 to 1988.

Subsequently, Bennett went to Centralia, where he served as an assistant for a few years, and then became the head coach, building that school into a powerhouse and winning some state titles. At one point John Rinehart, a Worth County grad who played under Bennett, was one of his assistants.

During his time at North Nodaway, Jim Lohman of the Hopkins Journal did a feature on Bennett. He said in that paper that while he was open to coaching at a small college, all he ever wanted to be was a high school football coach.

Ethan Fry Scores 15, Swipes 8 as Mustangs Hand NEN First Loss

North Nodaway had little reason to be optimistic coming into Tuesday’s game with Northeast Nodaway. They were at 1-2 after a last-second loss to Platte Valley and another loss to Stanberry. They beat an outmanned East Atchison team to get their first win, but they were facing a Northeast Nodaway team which was unbeaten in three tries and had not been seriously challenged.

Northeast had every reason to be worried about Aydan Blackford, but it was Ethan Fry, a tall skinny kid who was not your stereotypical guard, who ate the Bluejays alive, stealing the ball at every opportunity and getting 15 points in North Nodaway’s 41-31 win as the Mustangs overcame a 50 board performance by the Bluejays.

The Bluejays looked like they would just destroy North Nodaway on the boards, as they got a 12-1 advantage on the boards in the first 2½ minutes. But somehow, the game remained tied at 4-4 through the 1:32 mark of the first, and that was when North Nodaway realized they could play ball with them. Aydan Blackford got a drive and pullup, Fry added a putback, and Mason Casner added a free throw in the closing seconds as the Mustangs were on top 9-4.

Chris Kephart, who had 19 boards for the Bluejays, picked up his second foul and the game threatened to get away after Blackford’s drive put North Nodaway in front 16-9. But then Jadin DeFreece countered with a putback and a drive to bring the home side back to within 18-13 at the break.

Fry kept picking the Bluejays’ wallets, and the Mustangs went back in front 24-15 in the third. But then Kephart put the Bluejays on his back and brought them to within 24-20 with 2:15 left in the third before he picked up his fourth foul.

Jadin DeFreece scored off a steal to start the fourth to make it 24-22, but then Preston Hansen, who had been quiet the whole game, suddenly grabbed an offensive glass and Fry got yet another steal to put the game out of danger at 28-23. Landon Wilmes got a free throw and DeFreece added a putback to make it 28-25, but then Aydan Blackford’s drive sprung Hansen loose again, and he came through to break the run. Blackford connected with a baseline shot and a putback to make it 34-25 with 3:25 left in the game.

Brycen Kennard got loose in transition and Kephart put the Bluejays on his back again, getting an inside shot and a putback to make it 36-31 again. But Blackford got loose inside and added a free throw after a stop with 26 seconds left to make it 39-31. The second went astray, but Hansen was there for the putback to seal the game for the Mustangs.

Ethan Fry had 15, Ayden Blackford 13, Preston Hansen and Brice Trimble had 6 each, and Mason Casner had 1.

Ethan Fry and Preston Hansen had 2 blocks each. Aydan Blackford and Mason Casner had 1.

Baylie Busby Hangs 22 Points,10 Steals on North Nodaway as NEN Junior High Girls Win Third Straight

Baylie Busby hung 22 points and 10 steals on North Nodaway Tuesday night as the NEN Junior High squad won its third straight after dropping its first game against King City. They won 29-17 over North Nodaway.

The game started off as a defensive standoff, as both sides had trouble bringing the ball up against the other team’s pressure. Jill Boswell’s shot at the buzzer broke a 3-3 tie and put the Bluejays in front after one, but then Saryn Brown converted a three point play after a fast break look from Lauren Herndon to put the Mustangs in front 6-5 at the start of the second. The two-headed monster of Herndon and Brown looked like it would be a formidable challenge for the Bluejays.

But all of a sudden, Baylie Busby started channeling her aunt Natalie and started slicing through the blue shirts like they weren’t even there, putting up 10 points in the quarter as the Bluejays took control of the game. She sliced through the Mustang defenders to put her team up 7-6, knocked down a couple of outside shots, and then posted up inside and scored off a pass from Dalanie Auffert to make it 13-6. Saryn Brown’s triple cut it to 13-9, but Baylie went coast to coast in transition and put the Bluejays up 15-9 at the half.

Busby scored inside twice, and Dalanie Auffert added another basket as the Bluejays went up 21-11 after three. Busby, who picked the wallets of the Mustang players all night, got a steal and a free throw with 3:12 left to make it 23-11. Saryn Brown scored off a drive, but Busby countered with one of her own with 1:59 left to make it 25-13.

But Brown and Herndon would not stay down forever, and the Mustangs went for a miracle finish as Brown hit two free throws and Lauren Herndon got a steal off the press to make it 25-17. The Mustangs got another steal, but Saryn Brown missed a good look at a 3-pointer and Dalanie Auffert got the defensive board after a mad scramble. Lindsey Jackson inbounded to Auffert on the other end, and she connected to make it 27-17, and Busby finally picked North Nodaway’s wallet for her tenth steal and took it in for a layup for the final score.

For the Bluejays, Baylie Busby had 22, Dalanie Auffert had 5, and Jill Boswell had 2.
Jill Boswell, Baylie Busby, and Lindsey Jackson had 1 block each.

Dalanie Auffert had 11 boards. Busby came close to a triple double as she had 8. Hadley DeFreece showed a willingness to mix it up despite her small size and had 5. Jill Boswell had 3, Lindsey Jackson 2, and Sasha Deardorff and Mackenzie Pride had 1.

Jill Boswell had 4 assists. Dalanie Auffert had 3, Lindsey Jackson 2, and Hadley DeFreece 1.

Baylie Busby and Jill Boswell each had 7 tips. Hadley DeFreece had 4, and Dalanie Auffert had 1.

Panthers Clinch GRC Title After 90-64 Win

Pattonsburg clinched the GRC Title Friday after a wild 90-64 win over Albany, which had improved greatly since their 82-42 Worth County loss.

The game started out as a shootout, with the teams battling to a 34-34 tie before Pattonsburg pulled away to a 68-48 halftime lead. But instead of collapsing like they did against Worth County, Albany fought back, played shutdown defense in the third quarter, and made a game of it, coming to within 68-64 after three. But then Pattonsburg found their second win and scored 22 points in the final quarter to get the win.

Steven Willhite was 35 for 59 for 475 yards, 10 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He rushed four times for 15 yards, and Patrick Cowley rushed five times for 48 yards and three scores.
Cowley had 13 catches for 192 yards. Dakota Eaton had 11 catches for 180 yards, while Brett Emig had 10 catches for 107 yards.

District Football Pairings

With the influx of new teams into eight man football this year, there will be a lot more interest in the first round of districts. Previously, top teams had time to rest and recover while only the tailenders had to play a game in week one. But now, only the top teams have that luxury.
District 1
#3 Appleton City (9-0) bye.
Chilhowee (0-9) at #6 Drexel (7-2).
Northwest Hughesville (1-8) at Liberal (6-3).
Osceola (5-4) at Rich Hill (5-4).
Dark Horse – Rich Hill threw a scare into Pattonsburg earlier this year. They also knocked off Drexel and played a full game against Appleton City.

District 2
#2 Southwest Livingston (8-1) bye.
#7 Orrick (7-2) bye.
Braymer (0-9) at #8 North Shelby (7-2).
Stewartsville (2-7) at Norborne/Hardin-Central (4-5).
Dark Horse – Norborne/Hardin-Central threw a scare into Appleton City Friday before losing 22-12. The semifinal round could see a rematch between North Shelby and Orrick; the Bearcats won the first meeting 38-30 Friday.

District 3
#4 Pattonsburg bye.
North/West Nodaway (1-8) at #10 Worth County (6-3).
Platte Valley (2-7) at Albany (5-4).
Stanberry (2-7) at King City (2-7).
Worth County would have been second in the district even if they had dropped Friday’s game with Stanberry, since head to head tiebreakers trump MSHSAA point standings if the two teams are adjacent to each other.
Dark Horses – Albany lost to Pattonsburg Friday, but showed no quit, playing until the end. But first, they must get past Platte Valley, who led the Warriors through much of the first half in their regular season meeting before Albany took control in the second half. Stanberry got one of their key players back in Collin Sager, and will be a challenge despite their 2-7 record. King City has always been scrappy this year despite losing their starting quarterback.

District 4
#1 East Atchison bye.
Bishop LeBlond (2-6) at #9 North Andrew (7-2).
DeKalb (4-5) at #5 Mound City (7-2).
Rock Port (4-5) at South/Nodaway-Holt (5-4).
Dark Horse – South/Nodaway-Holt, which remained in Max Preps’ Top Ten despite struggling to get over .500 this year. They threw a scare into Southwest Livingston before falling 66-62 earlier this year.

Week Nine Football Rankings

Our final rankings:
#1 East Atchison (9-0)
#2 Southwest Livingston (8-1)
#3 Appleton City (9-0)
#4 Pattonsburg (8-1)
#5 Mound City (7-2)
#6 Drexel (7-2)
#7 Orrick (7-2)
#8 North Shelby (7-2)
#9 North Andrew (7-2)
#10 Worth County (6-3)

Many of the top teams had breathers in the final week. East Atchison beat Platte Valley 48-0. Southwest Livingston beat King City 68-14. Mound City won a halftime game 52-0 over Rock Port. Drexel won 67-0 over Kansas City East. North Andrew won 66-0 over Braymer, feasting on five turnovers and seven sacks; 12 different players got to carry the ball.

Three teams survived tough challenges against rapidly improving teams. Pattonsburg got a big halftime lead on Albany, but the Warriors, who had collapsed against Worth County, fought back and had chances to get back in the game before Pattonsburg put them away for the 90-64 win. Stanberry got one of their key players back in Collin Sager and that made a big difference as they had their chances against Worth County before falling 48-28. Norborne/Hardin-Central nearly spoiled Appleton City’s bid for an undefeated season before falling 22-12.

Orrick showed that their strong showing against Worth County despite their 28-6 loss, without Blake Buchanan, was no accident. With Buchanan back, they had a big second quarter and then fended off North Shelby in the second half as they successfully navigated the long bus ride to North Shelby and got the 38-30 win. That represented the one major shakeup in the rankings this week.

Tigers Recover to Beat Stanberry on Senior Night

Worth County snapped a two game losing streak as they beat Stanberry 48-28 Friday and clinched a winning season. Next up is a district game Friday at 7 pm against North/West Nodaway.

Friday night was Senior Night, and nine different seniors in football, cheer, golf, band, and softball were honored before the game. Honored were Regan Allee (cheer), Navada Hoff (cheer), Kaylee McElvain (cheer), Hanna McElvain (cheer, golf), Jaxon Anderson (football), Reed McIntyre (football), Gabe Latham (band), Anna Gladstone (softball), and Merrideth Spiers (softball, band).

Stanberry came out much improved from the Jamboree and from their 58-6 loss to Pattonsburg earlier in the year. They got Collin Sager back, which helped them out on both sides of the ball. Stanberry came out with an 8 play 52 yard drive that took them into the endzone with 8:54 left in the first quarter. Finally, Sager scored from eight yards out to put the Bulldogs on the board. Ethan Oldham added the extra points to put Stanberry up 8-0.

Worth County looked ready to answer as Alex Rinehart took it 29 yards to the 25 and a first down run from Aydan Gladstone took it to the 8. But the drive was killed by a bad snap.

Stanberry tried to add to their lead as they got a first down to the 25. But on fourth and one at the 34, Jaxon Anderson shot a gap and dropped Sager for no gain and Worth County held on downs. They overcame a false start and a dropped pass as they got in from 16 yards out on a Jaxon Anderson reverse that cut their deficit to 8-6.

Worth County shot themselves in the foot with a 15 yard facemask, giving Stanberry a short field to work with. The Bulldogs started on the Worth County 28; the Tigers nearly got off the field, but then Tyler Schwebach threw a strike to Collin Sager to make it 14-6 with 11:54 left in the second quarter.
The Tigers nearly stalled again, but on fourth and eight from the Stanberry 39, Jaxon Anderson caught a short pass, broke a couple of tackles, and got the first down to the 24. On third and nine from the 23, Aydan Gladstone scrambled for a touchdown to bring the Tiger back to within 14-12.

Stanberry got pinned on their own 14 on the ensuing kickoff, and they went three and out. Worth County got good field position at their own 37, and Alex Rinehart got blocks from Chase Atkins and Jaxon Anderson and got down to the 28. Worth County had several running plays in a row and finally got first and goal at the four. Stanberry nearly held on the series, but on the ensuing series, Jackson Runde knocked down Tyler Schwebach and that sprung Alex Rinehart into the end zone on fourth and goal at the one with 2:30 left. Alex broke a couple of tackles on the extra point run to put Worth County up 20-14.

The Tigers had a chance to score in the last minute as Aydan Gladstone scrambled for 33 yards to the 13 with 42 seconds left. But a block in the back and a dropped pass killed the drive.

Worth County got the ball to start the second half. They nearly stalled at the 40 thanks to a holding penalty, but on third and 14, Aydan Gladstone aired one out to Jaxon Anderson for 35 yards to the 14. Alex Rinehart took an option pitch to the house with 9:42 left and took another option to make it 28-14.

But then Stanberry switched from their running game into a spread formation and started throwing the ball right and left. Schwebach turned out to be elusive, breaking contain several times. On the series, Austin Welch was injured, left the field, and didn’t return. But a sack and a Delay of Game and an Alex Rinehart pick killed the drive at the 12.

Worth County drove all the way down to the one, but then a false start, a sack, and a batted pass killed the drive and gave Stanberry new life. A strike to Hunter Johnson gave Stanberry a first down at the 34, and a strike to Collin Sager gave them another on fourth and nine at the 35. Schwebach broke a bunch of tackles for another first down, and then threw a strike to Sager for 14 yards and a score with 11:29 left.

A pair of false starts forced a three and out, and Hunter Johnson made an incredible catch for 26 yards to the Worth County 36 with Alex Rinehart draped all over him. But then Reed McIntyre jumped a short pass and took it all the way back to the house with 9:48 left in the game to kill Stanberry’s momentum. Jackson Runde caught the extra point pass to put Worth County up 36-20.

A pair of sacks by Jaxon Anderson forced a three and out, and then on third and two at the Tiger 33, Aydan Gladstone found a big hole up the middle and took it 47 yards to the house with 6:29 left to put Worth County in control at 42-20.

Strikes to Landon Marticke and Collin Sager put Stanberry in position to score again and Sager walked into the end zone with 4:56 left. Worth County went three and out, but then a great kick by Jaxon Anderson pinned Stanberry on their own eight, and four straight incompletions gave Worth County the ball back again. This time, Aydan Gladstone scored with 2:23 left to make it 48-28.

Stanberry could do nothing as Schwebach was flushed out of bounds and Dawson Vore got a sack, and Worth County knelt out the clock.

Halle Morgan Gets Double Double as Junior High Shamrock Girls Win

Trendi Johnson had 13 points and Halle Morgan got a double double with 10 points and 12 boards as the North Harrison Shamrock girls got their first win of the season, a 26-19 win over Mercer.
The lopsided loss to Mercer was misleading; Mercer is unlikely to be seriously challenged this year. North Harrison battled against the size of the Winston team, but scrappy defensive play and 40 boards helped turn the tide.

It looked like Winston was in control after the first quarter as North Harrison was ice cold from the field and fell behind 4-2. But then Trendi Johnson shot the Shamrocks back into the game in the second, getting to the rim as the green shirts tied it at 7 and then 11. Late fouls by the Shamrocks allowed Winston to pull back ahead at the break 14-11.

But then Halle Morgan cleaned up on a steal and knocked one down from the right wing and then got a steal off the press that Trendi converted as the Shamrocks took their first lead of the game at 17-14. Shea Pliley connected to bring the Redbirds back within one, but then Morgan connected from the high post and then found Amber Wilson on the weak side; Wilson hit a free throw. Wilson was dribbling out the clock in the closing seconds when she found Morgan all alone again at the buzzer to put North Harrison up 22-16 after the break.

Trendi Johnson connected from the left wing and added a free throw in the fourth quarter, and the stingy North Harrison defense kept the Redbirds off the board for the first four minutes of the fourth as North Harrison led 25-16.

Winston made a late push to get back in the game as Lily Hocker hit a guarded shot from the left baseline. The Redbirds had fouls to give, so they could afford to be very aggressive in trying to get the ball back. Then, Amber Wilson, who has emerged as one of North Harrison’s most reliable ballhandlers this year, fouled out and Marissa Uthe banked home a free throw with 1:32 left. Winston got the offensive board and in the frantic sequence, the red shirts saw two 3-point tries go in and out.
The Redbirds turned the ball over after a scramble with 45 seconds left, but North Harrison turned the ball over, and there was a scary moment when Trendi Johnson crumpled up on the floor hurt with a possible knee injury. But it turned out to be superfluous, and she was able to walk off under her own power and came back to finish the game.

Uthe saw another 3-pointer go in and out, and it was a seventh grader, Kira Robertson, who got a key defensive board for the Shamrocks and got it to Trendi. Johnson made the clinching free throw with 13.4 seconds left to finally clinch the win.

For North Harrison, Trendi Johnson had 13, Halle Morgan 10, Jaci Davis 2, and Amber Wilson 1.

Halle Morgan had 12 boards, Jaci Davis 8, Trendi Johnson 6, Kira Robertson 5, Carmon Fordyce and Amber Wilson 3, Ashlin Bomar 2, and Cambry Doolittle 1.

Halle Morgan had 3 assists. Jaci Davis had 2, and Trendi Johnson and Amber Wilson had 1.

Amber Wilson had 6 tips. Trendi Johnson had 4, Jaci Davis 3, Carmon Fordyce 2, and Cambry Doolittle, Kira Robertson, Halle Morgan, and Ashlin Bomar 1.

Trendi Johnson had 6 steals. Halle Morgan had 5, Carmon Fordyce 4, Jaci Davis 2, and Amber Wilson and Kira Robertson had 1.

Jadin DeFreece Gets Double Double as NEN Wins

Jadin DeFreece had a double double for NEN and the Bluejays ran away for a 38-13 win over King City Monday night. He had 13 points and 10 boards in the win.

The Bluejays got on the board early as DeFreece posted up inside and scored and then Ethan Gascoigne knocked one down to make it 4-0. After King City’s best player, Blakey Eaton, picked up his second foul, the Bluejays continued to pull away as Gascoigne hit from the baseline, Chris Kephart got a putback, and Landon Wilmes scored off a steal before Brady Armfield countered with a steal to bring his team back to within 10-2 after one.

Gascoigne and Eaton traded buckets before DeFreece’s tipin with 4:02 sparked a Bluejay run that lasted through the rest of the second quarter and throughout the third. A block from Kephart set up Wilmes’ coast to coast look and a trip to the line for a free throw. Wilmes added a steal and a score to make it 17-4 with 1:09 left in the second.

DeFreece scored six in the last 54 seconds of the first half after a King City pass tipped by Wilmes and Jake Redden wound up in his hands and he scored off a steal. He then cut inside off an inbounds play following a turnover and then cleaned up off a Wilmes steal to put the Bluejays in front 23-4 at the half.

Gascoigne knocked one down in the high post despite being tangled up with Kephart to start the third quarter for the Bluejays. Kephart got a putback, and then Wilmes got a steal and a three point play. He added another free throw off a DeFreece steal, and then Kephart got on the line for two after grabbing an offensive board. Wilmes scored off a Chase Clabaugh steal early in the fourth to trigger the running clock. When the dust had settled, the Bluejays had scored 23 unanswered points over 11 minutes and led 35-4.

Jadin DeFreece had 13 points for the Bluejays. Landon Wilmes had 11, Ethan Gascoigne 8, and Chris Kephart 6.

Chris Kephart had two blocks, while Jake Redden, Jadin DeFreece, and Landon Wilmes each had one.

Jadin DeFreece had 10 boards for NEN. Chris Kephart had 8, Jake Redden and Jacob Meyer 2, and Ethan Gascoigne, Landon Wilmes, Brycen Kennard, and Kyler Scadden 1 each.

Ethan Gascoigne and Jadin DeFreece had 2 assists each. Jake Redden and Chris Kephart had 1 each.

Landon Wilmes had 8 tips. Jake Redden and Brycen Kennard had 3, and Jadin DeFreece and Jacob Meyer had 1.

Landon Wilmes had 6 steals. Jadin DeFreece had 4, Chris Kephart 3, Brycen Kennard and Chase Clabaugh each had 2, and Ethan Gascoigne had 1.

Panthers Lose Wild Game to North Shelby

Pattonsburg lost a wild 92-88 game to North Shelby Friday as they got their first loss of the year. The Raiders led 28-18 in the second and then scored two more before half to take a 44-18 halftime lead. It looked like the lead would hold up in the second half as both teams traded scores and North Shelby led 60-34 going into the fourth quarter.

But then the fun started. Both teams started scoring like crazy, and neither team could buy a stop on defense. Pattonsburg scored 54 points in the fourth quarter, only for North Shelby to score 32 and hang on at the end. Ironically, it was a defensive stop that ended the game, as the Panthers got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, only for the Raiders to get a pick at the end.

The game set a state record for most combined points in a game, with 180. It is the record for both eight man and 11 man football. The team scoring record of 106 points for eight man, set by South/Nodaway-Holt in 2015, still stands.

Steven Willhite had 39 completions in 55 attempts for 481 yards, eight touchdowns, and four picks. He rushed 21 times for another 135 yards. Brett Emig had 10 catches for 146 yards and added a 35 yard scoop and score. Patrick Cowley had 20 catches for 165 yards, while Dakota Eaton had 8 catches for 163 yards.

Defensively, Kaden Koch did all he could for the Panthers, getting 21 tackles. Dakota Eaton and Patrick Cowley had 13, Brett Emig 12, Login Goll 7, Clark Adler 6, Kason Mathes 5, Brody Langfitt and Collin Briggs 2, and Brandon Hamilton 1.

At the end of the game, it was extra points that made the difference. Both teams scored the same amount of times, 13. But North Shelby converted two more extra points than Pattonsburg did.

Graceland Shows Improvement But Falls to William Penn

Graceland showed improvement Saturday at William Penn as they led the Statesmen 24-20 at the half, but then gave up 33 unanswered points in the second half to fall 53-24. The goal now is to put together four quarters of football together.

Tevin Cameron had 9 tackles in the loss. He now has 75 tackles for the year, or over 10 per game. He is ranked 9th in the country among all positions.

Graceland fell behind early 7-0, but then put together a 12 play 75 yard drive capped off by a 13 yard pass from Antoine Williams II to Donte Sylencieux for 13 yards to knot it up. Graceland fell behind again 14-7, only for the Jackets to tie it up again on Williams’ 5 yard strike to Caleb Thomas.

William Penn answered right back to go up 20-14, but missed the extra point and Thomas ran back the ensuing kickoff to put his team up 21-20. Christopher Morris added a field goal as time expired at half to give Graceland the 24-20 lead. Unfortunately, there are four quarters in football.

Week Eight Football Rankings

#1 East Atchison 80, Stanberry 12 – Just as Stanberry looked like it was about to turn the corner, they ran into a brick wall. East Atchison is now one of only two undefeated teams left in eight man football with Pattonsburg’s 92-88 loss to North Shelby.  East Atchison’s week one win over Southwest is looking pretty impressive at this point.

The Wolves had “only” 400 yards, as they had a lot of short fields to work with. They had four fumble recoveries and three picks. Jake McEnaney had 11 carries for 124 yards, Kaylin Merriweather had 4 carries for 68 yards, and Briacin Bywater had 11 carries for 66 yards. McEnaney threw for 84 yards. Merriweather had 15 tackles. Stanberry hung tough with the Wolves through one quarter, only trailing 22-12, only for East Atchison to take control with 20 in the second and 32 for the third.

#2 Southwest Livingston 64, North/West Nodaway 14 – North/West Nodaway continued to show improvement even though the score didn’t show it, but they didn’t have an answer for Mack Anderson, who had 9 carries for over 200 yards for the Wildcats.

#3 Appleton City 46, Liberal 20 – Appleton City is one of two undefeated teams left after turning back Liberal Friday.

#4 North Shelby 92, #5 Pattonsburg 88 – This was one game that shook up the rankings this week. North Shelby is the real deal, and their line play was instrumental in Friday’s win. Pattonsburg nearly pulled this one out after being down by as much as 26 at one point. The game set a state record for most combined points in a game with 180. This is for both eight man and 11 man. The single game scoring record in eight man of 106 points, set by South/Nodaway-Holt in 2015, is still intact.

The game looked like a normal game going into the fourth quarter, with North Shelby up 60-34. But then both teams started scoring at a frantic pace, with Pattonsburg putting up 54 points and North Shelby 32.

#6 Mound City 50, DeKalb 12 – Mound City won again although DeKalb went the distance this time.

#7 Drexel 54, Chilhowee 14 – Drexel got back on the winning track this week; Chilhowee hung tough in the first half, but Drexel pulled away in the second.

For Drexel, Jacob Coffey had 21 carries for 186 yards. Adam Gilbert had 6 carries for 127 yards, and Cory Cumpton had 7 carries for 51 yards and added a punt return. Gilbert had 10 tackles. They key for the game was in rushing yards; while Drexel got over 400 rushing yards for the game, they held Chilhowee to negative rushing yards. Out of 56 plays run by Chilhowee, 19 went for losses. Drexel had six sacks for the night.

#8 Orrick 72, Osceola 18 – Orrick unloaded on Osceola in the first quarter, hanging 44 unanswered points on them in the win. Blake Buchanan had another big night, getting 12 carries for 243 yards, over 20 yards a carry. Blake McAfee added 15 carries for 121 yards.

#9 North Andrew 86, #10 Worth County 46 – This is the other game that shook up the rankings this week. North Andrew was still finding their way last year under a new coach and a new system. But this year, they hit full throttle as they outplayed Worth County for the win. There are now only nine teams left with two losses after Worth County and Liberal dropped their games this week.

St. Joseph Man Injured in Wreck NE of Eagleville

A St. Joseph man was injured in a wreck eight miles northeast of Eagleville last Wednesday morning. He crossed the center line and traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking an embankment. The vehicle returned to the roadway and began overturning. It came to rest on its top in the roadway. They had visited the place before, and had filmed it from the outside. They have also visited Denver Sleigh Works as well. But on Tuesday, they filmed it from the inside; it had been left intact since 1974. It had old Pepsi bottles, posters from 1973, and even the old prices. Diamond REO once played there, and Budweiser used to cost 55 cents and a bottle of pop used to cost 50 cents.

There are old beer bottles still there, including Schlitz and Falstaff. Schlitz featured the commercials which said, “Behind every Schlitz is a man who knows his beer,” which naturally got people to ask why they showed women in their commercials. The Falstaff bottles still had beer in them, and the announcer has a standing dare for anyone to try to drink the beer, which has aged since the 1970’s.

This year, Sam Coburn bought the building with the goal of restoring it. Last month, he hosted a nostalgia party for the 169 Club open to the public; between 200 and 300 people showed up. The pool table and sticks are still there, as are the old fans, smoking pipes, and jukebox records.

Shamrocks Fall to Princeton, Finish Second in Districts

North Harrison fell 3-1 to Princeton at the District Finals Saturday and ended their season at 16-8, one game better than last year, when they finished at 15-9. The Shamrocks had previously fallen to Princeton 3-2 in Albany at the beginning of the year.

It looked like Blue Tiger pitcher Lauren Krohn would just mow down the Shamrock batters, striking out five in her first two innings of work. The only solid hit was a drive by Ashlynn Gilpatrick ran down by center fielder Lacie Lewis.

But Princeton could got take advantage, as North Harrison kept them off the board in the early going.  They had a chance in the first. Krohn singled down the right field line. Lacie Lewis flied out to Amber Wilson in left and Lindsey Batson grounded to Kami Gibson at short. North Harrison threw to second for the force, but second baseman Trendi Johnson threw away the double play attempt and Batson went to third with two outs. But then pitcher Carly Rinehart struck out Makenzie Dunkin on a change to get out of the inning with no damage done.

The Shamrocks finally broke through in the fourth. Carly Rinehart hit a pop fly behind second that nobody took charge on and center fielder Lacie Lewis frantically raced in, only for it to drop in before she could get there. Rinehart made it all the way to second. Emma Craig struck out, but Rainey Fordyce hit a pop fly that Krohn and first baseman Sara Spencer tangled up on, putting runners at first and second. Ashlynn Gilpatrick singled home Rinehart to make it 1-0.

Princeton had two chances to answer. In the fourth, Lewis doubled to left and Batson had a sac bunt to advance her to third. But catcher Emma Craig picked her off third after Rinehart struck out Dunlin for a double play.

In the Princeton fifth, Rinehart struck out Carsey Brown, but Jasmine Allen and Sara Spencer singled and Megan Spencer walked to load the bases. Kennedy Norton hit a pop fly that looked like trouble behind second, but Kami Gibson, who had excellent range from her shortstop position, came racing behind second base to make the catch and she doubled Sara Spencer off for the double play as second baseman Trendi Johnson hustled to the bag to cover.

But the Blue Tigers finally broke through in the sixth when Krohn singled to right and Lewis doubled to left to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Lindsey Batson grounded to Rinehart, but Krohn took off on the play and was safe at home on the fielder’s choice to tie it at 1-1. For some reason, Lewis did not take third on the play, meaning there were runners on first and second instead of first and third, but Makenzie Dunlin did her job and moved the runners up with a groundout to second. Carsey Brown singled one run home to put Princeton up 2-1. Jasmine Allen was called out on strikes, but Sara Spencer hit a slow roller behind second base that shortstop Kami Gibson got to, but didn’t have a play on as a third run crossed the plate.

With one out in the seventh, Trendi Johnson kept North Harrison’s chances alive with a single to center, but Hunter Stevens struck out and Baily Briggs grounded out to end the game.

The Shamrocks finished the season with their seventh straight conference title and their 49th straight conference win. Playing their last game were Kaylee Hilburn, Ashlynn Gilpatrick, Hunter Stevens, Kylie Pottorff, and Kenna Slaughter. Princeton went on to play Platte Valley, which beat Stanberry 8-7 in extra innings to win their district.

Tigers Continue Slide Against North Andrew

Worth County continued their slide, falling 86-46 to North Andrew despite finally returning home after a long hiatus. They had built up a 5-1 record on talent, but over the last two games, their youth and inexperience (two seniors) compared to other top teams has gotten exposed. They got Austin Welch back, but lost Andrew Alarcon for the year (ACL). By contrast, Pattonsburg has eight seniors on their roster, while North Andrew came into Friday’s game with ten seniors.

What started out promising for Worth County turned into a nightmare. They got the ball to start off the game with. They operated with no huddle, allowing them a lot more time to get plays off, and marched right down the field to score on a pass from Aydan Gladstone to Reed McIntyre with 10:09 left.

It looked even better when Jaxon Anderson recovered a fumble at the North Andrew 30. But then everything started to go from bad to worse from there, started by a two yard loss and then a block in the back. That led to a blocked punt recovered by North Andrew on the Tiger 25, and they took it right in and scored on their first play when Carson Thomas scored with 8:15 left. Alex Rinehart broke up the extra point pass to keep it tied at 6-6.

The teams exchanged punts, and then Worth County was stopped on fourth and five at the Cardinal 34. From there on out, North Andrew unleashed a blitzing defense that Worth County could not solve for the rest of the night. They bunched six men up near the line of scrimmage, always sent more people in to rush than Worth County had people to block them with, and always had people loose to make the tackles.

Offensively, North Andrew ran and used Jaden Baker to throw long passes when the Tigers sold out too much to stop the run. They aired one out to Clayton Linville for 46 yards with 1:38 left in the first. Baker ran in the extra points to make it 14-6. Worth County fumbled the kickoff right back to North Andrew and the Cardinals took full advantage when Jaden Baker scored from 5 yards out with 54.8 seconds left to make it 20-6. Aydan Gladstone broke up the extra point pass.

An 11 yard option run by Alex Rinehart and a 13 yard keeper by Aydan Gladstone put the ball on the 23, but he was denied on a sneak. But Justin Dye dropped Baker for a loss of two back to the 30 on the ensuing series on fourth and one, and Worth County took advantage of the short field. A Roughing the Passer call put it on the 15, and Aydan Gladstone dove for the pylon and got in with 8:45 left. He ran in the extra points to cut Worth County’s deficit to 20-14.

But every time Worth County looked like they would finally get some momentum, they had a breakdown that would hand it right back to North Andrew. One such breakdown happened on the next play when nobody covered McKinley Lillard and he was all alone for a 57 yard touchdown strike with 8:28 left. Jaden Baker ran in the extra points to make it 28-14.

Worth County was faced with third and one at their own 37, tried twice for the first down, and didn’t make it. It took just two plays for North Andrew to take advantage as they struck again as Coby Ethridge scored from 25 yards out to make it 36-14 after Ethridge’s run with 6:45 left.

Aydan Gladstone aired out a 58 yard strike to Alex Rinehart to put the ball on the two, but then confusion broke out, nobody knew what they were supposed to be doing, and the red shirts swarmed all over the ball as they were denied. North Andrew marched right down the field and a 43 yard run from Brayden Brincks set up Jaden Baker’s six yard score with 2:47 left. Keenan Shunk caught the extra point pass, and frustration set in with players walking off the field and bickering.

The Tigers recovered to score right before halftime, as consecutive passes to Reed McIntyre of 8 and 11 yards and a 33 yard scamper from Aydan Gladstone put the ball on the one. Worth County ran a quarterback sneak and Gladstone bounced outside to get in with 10.5 seconds left, and Alex Rinehart caught the extra point pass to make it 44-22.

Worth County had every right to expect momentum coming out of the gate in the third quarter, but promptly give up a big play, a 35 yard score from Brayden Brincks with 9:30 left to make it 52-22. North Andrew recovered a fumble right off the bat and were backed up fourth and five at the Tiger 38. But then the tackling broke down and Baker picked up a first down at the 32, and then nobody guarded Keenan Shunk, who took a 32 yard strike from Baker and was all alone for the score with 7:29 left.

Aydan Gladstone was picked off on the Cardinal 25, and North Andrew took advantage of a Defensive Holding penalty and passes to Caden Patterson and Keaton Hannah to march down to the 13. Jaden Baker took it to the house from there with 3:54 left in the third quarter and Patterson ran in the extra points to make it 66-22.

Jaxon Anderson ran back the ensuing kickoff to the Cardinal 39, and that set up Worth County’s next score. Anderson’s 10 yard pass put it on the 24, and Alex Rinehart’s catch and run with 3:02 left in the third and Aydan Gladstone’s extra point run made it 66-30.

Just as it looked like Worth County would get momentum back, disaster struck again. Reed McIntyre got a big hit to pin North Andrew on its own 13, only for the Cardinals to pick up a first down; then, Baker took it to the house from 53 yards and ran in the extra points to make it 74-30 again.

Alex Rinehart hurdled a defender with 11:51 and scored from 17 yards out and Reed McIntyre scored the extra point pass. But then Brayden Brincks countered with a 62 yard sweep and then the teams turned it over to their reserves. Colt Cameron ripped off a 50 yard scamper for the Tigers and Levi Cassavaugh had runs of 45 and 8 yards.

In personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Christie Peterson (p/t foodservice worker), hired Beth Steele (p/t food service) and Tera Coleman, as long-term substitute teacher.

Shamrocks Shut Down Mercer; Gibson, Gilpatrick Go Deep

North Harrison turned back Mercer 16-1 Thursday as they got back on the winning track following an 8-2 loss to Putnam County the Monday before. Ashlynn Gilpatrick and Kami Gibson both went deep in the win as the Shamrocks got a first round bye and then won the second round of districts.
The Cardinals looked like a team on the rise after they had jumped on the Shamrocks, going ahead 3-1 at one point in the HDC Tournament Championship before North Harrison used some big innings to put them away 13-3 right before a deluge would have washed the game out. But this time, after the Cardinals got two on with one out, North Harrison got out of the first inning with no damage done and then proceeded to score 12 runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away right off the bat.

Jayliegh Robins walked, stole second, and then stole third on the return throw home and then came home on Carly Rinehart grounder home when pitcher Aubrey Wilson bobbled her grounder. Emma Craig walked and then Rainey Fordyce singled to center to bring in Lola Brashears (running for Craig) and putting Amber Wilson (running for Rinehart) on third. Rainey stole second and then Ashlynn Gilpatrick singled to left to bring two more runs in and took second on a bobble to make it 4-0.

Mercer had a shift on against North Harrison in the previous game, in which their outfielders were up against the wall and bunched up between right center and left. Previously, it had given the Shamrocks problems, but in Thursday’s game, it didn’t matter as the hits were coming in fast and furious despite the shift.

Up stepped Kami Gibson and crushed one 235 feet to left field over the fence to bring in Gilpatrick to make it 6-0. Trendi Johnson hit a pop fly that dropped in for a double when the left fielder tried for a catch and missed. Hunter Stevens’ pop fly single put Trendi on third, and Baily Briggs flied out to score Johnson. Jayliegh Robins reached on a dropped fly ball, and Stevens and Robins went to second and third on a wild pitch. Carly Rinehart flied out to center to make it 8-0.

There were two outs, but the hits kept coming as Emma Craig’s pop fly double scored Robins, and then Rainey Fordyce singled to left to score Lola Brashears (running for Craig). Ashlynn Gilpatrick came up and beat the shift, crushing one fair past first and into Triple Alley. She flew around the bases before the red shirts could get it in, and North Harrison was up 12-0.

With one out in the second, North Harrison began their push towards the 15 run rule. Jayliegh Robins singled, then Kenna Slaughter beat out a slow roller down the third base line. Emma Craig hit a hard shot off the pitcher’s glove and took second on a throwing error as Slaughter took third and Robins scored. Rainey Fordyce reached on a bad hop single to short, Ashlynn Gilpatrick singled to left, and Katelyn Briggs grounded out to score the last run.

Mercer finally got on the board when Jordan Coon singled in Rainey Michael.

Census Hits 34; Worth County Care & Rehab Gets First VA Patient

The Worth County Care & Rehab Center saw its census rise to 34 residents as of Thursday, Administrator Kelly Summa told the board at their meeting Wednesday. This was the highest it had been in around 10 years. The high was 34 for the month and the low was 28. There were 13 admissions and 6 discharges for September, while there were 5 admissions and 1 discharge so far in October. There were two Part A patients, while there were five Part B and 6 outpatients, with two referrals. At one point, the facility was down to 14 residents. There were referrals from as far away as St. Joseph and North Kansas City. In total, they got eight residents from the closure of the King City facility.

Also, the facility got its first VA patient, and had a lot of queries and interest. The VA will only designate so many facilities as VA facilities based on demographics and need. The facility went through the final hoops, as it went through a VA and a nursing inspection for the facility. The inspectors had positive comments about the friendliness of the facility as well as the cleanliness. The VA has its own transportation for their patients, which means that it will not be an extra burden for the facility.

The facility now has 45 employees. At one point, the facility was down to 28 employees. The ones who work at the facility now have more hours. They also have PRN’s, who they can call on an as-needed basis. Seven employees have come to Worth County from King City.

With the increased census, the facility is now looking for signage. There have been people from out of town with family members in the facility who have had trouble finding it.  Economic Developer Gene Auten has been looking for possible solutions. The facility will use some funds from a special donation that was made some time ago towards the expenses.

The facility got a new washing machine from the closing Afton facility, and King City has been donating items as well. Summa said that they have cleaned out the shed and threw out unneeded or soiled items. She said they were going to bid on some items from Afton as soon as they go online to be auctioned off. One thing that will help is the fact that they don’t have to buy things based on the fire rating.

The sprinkler system was tested and inspected, and the antifreeze didn’t test. It now has to be replaced annually due to new regulations. They can put in new antifreeze annually, or they can go to a powder fire extinguisher system at a cost of $5,000 to $50,000, but not have to do as much maintenance.

For September, revenues were $136,268.33, while expenses were $116,231.66 for a net income of $20,036.67. The Halloween Party will be on October 31st at 2 pm. The family of Marynell Richards donated a bench in her memory to the facility.

North/West Nodaway made a goal line stand Friday and ended a 21 game losing streak, beating LeBlond 58-52. The Muskets had not even scored more than 14 points in a game this year. But they showed improvement against DeKalb the week before, threatening to make a game of it before they lost 42-14.

In Friday’s game, North/West Nodaway passed that mark in the first quarter, jumping out to a 20-0 lead. It was the first time the Muskets had led all year. But then LeBlond was sparked by a punt return for a score in the second quarter and tied it at 20 before North/West Nodaway moved back in front 28-20 at halftime. The third and fourth quarters were back and fourth, with neither team being able to stop each other.

LeBlond went up 52-50 with four minutes to go, only for North/West Nodaway to march down the field and score with 40 seconds to go back up 58-52.

But there was still football to be played, and LeBlond completed two long passes to set up first and goal at the five. It looked like a repeat of the DeKalb game from last year, where the Muskets led the whole game, only for the Tigers to complete a long pass to set up their game-winning score and win 42-40.

But this time, the Muskets drove LeBlond back to the 15 thanks to a false start and a sack, where the Golden Eagles attempted a pass into the end zone on fourth down. Tyler Bix picked it off in the end zone and the Muskets were able to kneel down. It was Bix’s second pick of the night.

Karson Oberhauser scored seven touchdowns for the Muskets, but he was quick to deflect credit to his teammates afterwards. The team attempted to douse coach Anthony Christian with the water bucket afterwards, but he ran away before they could get him. It was his first win as Head Coach of the Muskets.

Tyler Bix and Abigail Ferguson were named North Nodaway Homecoming King and Queen afterwards.

The game was the first home win for the Muskets since 2016, when they beat DeKalb 52-0.
Karson Oberhauser completed 6 of 12 passes for 62 yards. Austin Bird had three catches for 17 yards, while Preston Bateman had 1 catch for 19 yards, Will Cordell had 1 catch for 16 yards, and Tyler Bix 1 catch for 10 yards.

Both Oberhauser and Austin Bird had career nights rushing the football. Oberhauser had 43 carries for 348 yards. Austin Bird had 15 carries for 97 yards. The Muskets had 507 total yards in offense. Cody Goff added a 57 yard kickoff return.

Andrew Blackford led the team in tackles with 9. Cody Goff and Tyler Bix had 8, Austin Bird 6, Will Cordell and Karson Oberhauser 5, James Graham 4, Preston Bateman 3, Jordan Jenkins and Cody Cline 2, and Wyatt O’Riley 1.
