Kaitlyn Estes propelled Pattonsburg's softball team past King City Tuesday, September 16th after the Panthers had taken a tough loss the night before to Maysville 11-8. Pattonsburg committed nine errors in that game and dug themselves into a 9-1 hole after the Wolverine fourth to a squad that is much better this year after having been in the doormat recently. But they rallied back with two in the fourth and five in the fifth to make things interesting at 9-8. But Maysville pushed two insurance runs across in the sixth to secure the win.
Kaitlyn Estes, Isabella Burger, and Emsleigh McCrary were bright spots in the game, all getting two hits. Addie Iddings, Vanessa Weigand, and Cheyanne Miller each had one. Estes had two doubles while Burger and Weigand had one. Addie Iddings and Clare Christensen had one steal each. Iddings struck out six on the mound.
Meanwhile, King City was on a tear, having scored 17 and 15 runs in their last two games. They picked up where they left off in the first, with Kenzie Pettijohn getting a single and taking second on an error. King City took advantage when Brylin Armfield grounded out to score her and put them up 1-0. They continued to take advantage of Panther errors in the second as Beatrix Bowden reached on an error, took second on a passed ball, and scored all the way from second on a groundout to make it 2-0.
But then Jayden Goble singled to left in the Panther third and Iddings singled as well. The ball got away from the right fielder and Goble scored and Iddings took third as Pattonsburg cut it to 2-1. Isabella Burger singled to center to knot it up.
Rosalynn Cameron reached on a catcher's interference with one out in the fourth and Cheyanne Miller singled her to second. Addie Iddings got her second hit and Cameron scored to put Pattonsburg in front 3-2.
As Iddings was retiring eight straight batters, the Panthers continued to build on their lead. Kaitlyn Estes singled, Emersyn McCrary reached on an error, and Vanessa Weigand singled to load the bases. Rosalynn Cameron got a scratch hit as Weigand and Estes scored to make it 5-2. Cameron took second on defensive indifference. Cheyanne Miller beat out another scratch hit as Weigand scored and Miller took third to make it 6-2. Jayden Goble then crushed the first pitch for a double to center as Miller and Cameron both scored to make it 8-2. Addie Iddings then reached on an error as Goble scored from second to make it 9-2. Isabella Burger beat out an infield hit as Iddings took second. Emersyn McCrary was plunked to load the bases and Vanessa Weigand singled to score Clare Christensen (running for Burger) and Addie Iddings to make it 11-2.
Iddings retired ten straight King City batters before Allison Stone singled to break the spell in the fifth. But King City is not an easy team to keep down and sure enough, an error and a walk in the Panther sixth put runners on first and second with nobody out. Kamryn Miller, who hit a home run in the tournament against Gilman City, hit another one to make it 11-5 and Beatrix Bowden followed with another to make it 11-6.
The rally continued for King City as Kinley Potter singled, Delaney Hontz reached on a dropped third strike, and Allison Stone singled to put Hontz on third and score Potter to make it 11-7. Stone took second on defensive indifference and then Allie Schneider hit a fly ball to Carly Pittsenbarger in left. Hontz scored after tagging up to make it 11-8, but the Panthers appealed to second that Stone had not tagged up and turned it into a double play to get out of the inning still up three.
With one out, Isabelle Burger walked on four pitches. Kaitlyn Estes singled Clare Christensen (running for Burger) to third and advanced to second on defensive indifference. Emersyn McCrary grounded out to first, but Christensen scored and then Estes came around and scored as well after an error on the play to make it 13-8.
But the heart of the Wildkat order was up and sure enough, Kenzie Pettijohn beat out an infield hit and stole second and third and then scored on a passed ball to make it 13-9. A single and an error put two more on, and another baserunner would bring the tying run to the plate. But Kinley Potter's line drive was snared by Kara Bernardino for the third and final out.
Kaitlyn Estes had the hot bat for the Panthers, going 3 for 5 after going 2 for 4 in the Maysville game; she went 5 for 9 in both games. Jayden Goble, Addie Iddings, Isabella Burger, Vanessa Weigand, and Cheyanne Miller all had two hits. Emsleigh McCrary and Rosalynn Cameron had 1 each. Jayden Goble had a double. Addie Iddings struck out seven batters.
