Tigers Get Back to Basics; Hayden Sanders Leads Them to 56-0 Shutout

Smarting from their week one loss, Worth County went back to basics. "We don't care what the score is, we focus on getting better and better every single play and every single day," said coach Jon Adwell. "We just stay in the moment and focus on details." After every game, their chant is, "Day by day, getting better and better..." It's not just something they chant after every game; it's something they try to put into practice every single day.

Hayden Sanders was still feeling the effects of a helmet to the knee that he took the week before, but he came back and led the Tigers to a shutout victory, 56-0 over South Holt. He ran the offense well, never tried to do too much or force anything, and threw some good balls when he had to. He even got in on the action, constantly throwing blocks on the enemy defenders to spring Cole Ruby or Brayden Stevens loose for long gains. And Bo Collins and Lucas Frisch were able to catch long balls to keep the defense from selling out to stop the run. After turning the ball over three times against Rock Port, they didn't turn it over at all against South Holt and forced several turnovers against the Knights. After failing to convert on four red zone drives last week, they scored on every possession and converted every extra point try.

Defensively, the tackling was much better, starting with a big Lucas Frisch hit on the kickoff. They were able to get into the backfield to pressure Coltyn Fansher into some errant throws. Wyatt Hill got a pick six and Brayden Combs played his way into the lineup, getting a sack and some solid hits. Caleb New replaced Lucas Frisch at one point when Frisch had a bloody nose and got a sack.

South Holt tried to surprise Worth County with an onsides kick, but Bo Collins covered it at the Knights 39. Cole Ruby got blocks from Bo Collins and Hayden Sanders and took it 33 yards down to the six. Brayden Stevens got blocks from Lucas Frisch and Hayden Sanders and got it to the house with 11:41 left. Cole Ruby got a block from Bo Collins and took it to the house to make it 8-0.

Coltyn Fansher picked up three yards after South Holt got the ball on their own 20. A botched pitch put the Knights behind the sticks at their own 18, but Fansher scrambled to the 27 for fourth and three. They went for it, but Bo got some pressure and batted Fansher's pass in the air and Wyatt Hill picked it off and took it to the house with 9:32 left. Cole Ruby got blocks from Lucas Frisch and Hayden Sanders and ran it in to make it 16-0.

Fansher got nothing on his first try and Tayte Prussman tried a sweep, but met a swarm of Tigers led by Jude Archer. But then Will Jackson, the tight end, got loose over the middle and his 38 yard catch and run threatened to make it game of it as he took it to the Tiger 13. But the next pass was incomplete and a running play went nowhere as Bo Collins got a helmet on the football and Ethan Lininger pounced on it to kill the drive.

Brayden Stevens picked up eight yards to the 19 after getting blocks from Frisch and Sanders. Brayden Stevens went nowhere on his next play, but then a quick hitter to Lucas Frisch got through the first level and he took it 10 yards to the 31. Jude Archer got a block from Caleb New and took it nine yards to the 40 and Cole Ruby got a block from Lucas Frisch and took it 40 yards to the house with 5:55 left in the first quarter. Cole Ruby got blocks from Hayden Sanders and Lucas Frisch and ran in the extra points to make it 24-0.

Worth County only needed two plays to get the ball back as someone got a hand in and ripped the ball out and Bo Collins recovered on the Knights 26. They only needed one play to take advantage as Collins caught a short pass, ran over a defender, and took it to the house with 5:01 left. Brayden Stevens got blocks from Caleb New and Hayden Sanders and ran in the extra points to make it 32-0.

Wyatt Hill and Ryder Smyser got back to back tackles for loss and forced South Holt into a three and out. Cole Ruby picked up nine and Brayden Stevens ten more as the Tigers got to the 31. They were nearly derailed by a block in the back, but on fourth and ten, Hayden Sanders threw a strike over the middle to Lucas Frisch, who lateraled it to Bo Collins, who picked up a few more yards down to the 14. An offsides penalty put it on the nine and a quick hitter took Hayden Sanders to the one as he got a block from Ryder Smyser. Cole Ruby took a sweep, Ethan Lininger threw a good initial block to stop the pursuit, and Hayden Sanders threw another to spring him free with 11:28 left in the half as he took it to the house. Brayden Stevens got a block from Lucas Frisch and added the extra points to make it 40-0.

On the next series, Lucas Frisch came out with a bloody nose, but Caleb New took his spot at linebacker and got a sack to force a three and out. The kick was shanked and Worth County had the short field at the Knight 37. Hayden Sanders went nowhere, but Brayden Stevens got a block from Bo Collins and took it 13 yards to the 23. Jude Archer got a block from Hayden Sanders, made another defender miss, and walked the tightrope down the left sideline to the house with 8:13 left. Cole Ruby got a block from Bo Collins and ran in the extra points to make it 48-0.

South Holt threatened again as on third and ten at their own 32, they drew up a perfectly executed screen pass and a freshman, Kameron Noland, took it 29 yards to the Tiger 19. But Brayden Combs, back from a knee injury that knocked him out for the season last year, got a sack to kill the drive and the Tigers were able to preserve the shutout.

The Knights tightened up their defense and forced Worth County into a third and ten at their own 22. But then Hayden Sanders aired it out to Bo Collins and he took it away from Noland after a good battle and took it to the house with 4:05 left. Brayden Stevens got a block from Bo Collins and laid out two defenders to get into the end zone to make it 56-0.

South Holt finally started finding daylight, using a triple option game to move down the field and a short pass to Will Jackson on fourth and three kept the drive going. They got as far as the Tiger 18 before time ran low and they had to try a pass to get a score. Lucas Frisch flushed Fansher out of the pocket and Bo Collins got the sack to preserve the shutout at the end.
