Ava Rinehart Goes Deep, Picks Two Runners Off; Shamrocks Beat South Harrison JV to Set Up Showdown

North Harrison showed its win over North Andrew, ended by Lani Briggs' triple play, was no fluke as they kept the ball rolling in an 8-4 win against South Harrison JV. The two games had identical scores, but Saturday's game had a few less fireworks than the first game.

The first five Shamrocks successfully reached base in the first inning as Addison Milligan beat out a bunt down the third base line. On the next play, South Harrison overextended trying to guard against the bunt and Hali Smith pushed it past everyone for another base hit. Lani Briggs singled to right to load the bases and Ava Rinehart hit a shot off the shortstop's glove to score Milligan to make it 1-0. With South Harrison bringing all their infielders in to guard against the slap, Raegan Hogan crushed a double over everyone's head to bring in three runs to make it 4-0. Andi Nail advanced her to third with a groundout and Kathryn Parkhurst singled her home to make it 5-0.

In the South Harrison second, Molly Bottcher hit a hard shot but pitcher Hali Smith snared it for the first out. That precented a one run inning from turning into a big inning as Kaylor Robinson singled and Jaycee Glenn doubled her home to cut it to 5-1.

North Harrison got the run back in its half of the second when Addison Milligan doubled to left center. Hali Smith advanced her to third with a groundout and Lani Briggs flied out to score her and make it 6-1.

South Harrison threatened to score in the third when Emily Taggart doubled to start the inning. But Hali Smith struck out Keeleigh Gilpatrick and then Maddie Meadows grounded out and Alivia Eivins grounded out as well.

The Bulldogs got two in the fourth when Molly Bottcher walked. Kaylor Robinson hit a fly ball that dropped in front of right fielder Kathryn Parkhurst before she could get to it and it rolled past her. Taneya Doll (running for Bottcher) scored and Robinson took second. Robinson later scored on a wild pitch to cut it to 6-3. South Harrison loaded the bases, Hali Smith was fighting the strike zone, and the lead run was at the plate. There was a heartstopping moment when Maddie Meadows hit a grounder between first and second. Andi Nail made a diving try and missed and there was no way she could get back to the bag in time. But second baseman Becca Welling raced in behind her, snagged the ball, and beat Meadows to the bag for the final out.

Addison Milligan led off the North Harrison fourth with a single to center. Despite the heart of the Shamrock order coming up, South Harrison nearly got out of the inning when Hali Smith and Lani Briggs both grounded out. But Ava Rinehart gave the Shamrocks badly needed insurance runs when she homered to left field 245 feet away to make it 8-3.

Molly Bottcher walked with one out in the South Harrison fifth. Taneya Doll (running for Bottcher) went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Kaylor Robinson's double to the center field wall to make it 8-4. But South Harrison ran its way out of a big inning when Ava Rinehart picked Robinson off second and Lani Briggs ran her to third and threw to Jaxcynn Hansel for the second out. Jaycee Glenn walked, but then Ava Rinehart picked her off first. Andi Nail threw to Lani Briggs at short, who threw back to Nail for the third out.

Time was called at the end of the Shamrock fifth.
