Obituary -- Lonnie Slavik 1930-2020

Lonnie John Slavik was born December 23, 1930 and passed away on March 26, 2020 at the age of 89. He was raised on a small farm in Diagonal, Iowa during the Great Depression to John and Anna Slavik with three brothers and three sisters, so they had to work hard for what they received.

He was drafted into service during the Korean War, he elected to join the Marines. After an honorable discharge he started working nights while attending the University of Omaha where he earned a BBA in Finance and began his family with his wife of 58 years, Marilyn. They had three boys Steven (Martha), Randal and Scott. They moved to Kansas City and then on to Memphis with both parents retiring from the IRS.

His finance degree and frugal beginnings served him well as he enjoyed a long retirement with Marilyn, the three boys and their families, friends and neighbors that they helped in any way they could. A man of few words with a quiet voice but when he had something to say one would be wise to listen. Loved by all, disliked by no one, he will be sorely missed in a world where doing the right thing for others instead of yourself seems less and less common.

Obituary -- Max Dawson

Wheaton Max Chandler Dawson, Jr., known as Max to his friends and family, died on March 24, 2020 at 92.  He was the son of W.M.C. Dawson and Inez Motsinger Dawson and was a lifelong resident of Worth County.  His Grandfather, John C. Dawson, established the Citizens Bank of Grant City in 1881. He was a Mayflower descendant. Even though he grew up in a banking family, Max never wanted to be a banker.  He wanted to be a farmer raising registered angus cattle. One of his favorite sayings was "nothing looks as good as black cattle on green grass." He spent his summers on the farm of his maternal grandparents, John and Harley Motsinger, and had to be forced to go back to school each fall.  He kept his farm in perfect order as his daughters can attest who spent their summers pulling weeds and painting fences. He was blessed to be able to stay on his farm until the final hours of his life, thanks to the care of his wife, Lyla and daughter, Cynthia Barker. Thanks also to Rob Foley and Harold Jones for their help.

Max was a hellraiser in his early years and a rebel all of his life.  He could be a difficult person and was proud of that, saying it made life more interesting. He hated paying taxes of any kind, refused to recognize any authority figure and had more than one squabble with county road maintainers when they worked on his road. He was a big fan of the off color joke. Pretty much everyone in Worth County has a Max story. But, he was a great neighbor and in his early years helped young men who were headed to reform school and those who had been released from prison by hiring them on the farm.

Max served in the Navy on the Iowa battleship in World War II and then attended Northwest Missouri State University for two years, taking all of their agriculture courses. Max married the adorable, auburn headed, sixteen year old Lyla Jeanne Culbertson in 1948 whom he met at the Grant City skating rink. He and Lyla have four daughters and he was very proud of them.  At first, he was disappointed that he didn't have sons but decided that they all had to be cheerleaders and great horseback riders. He got great pleasure from teaching them how to win blue ribbons when showing horses and barrel racing.  He liked to say "act like you are mad at it" which meant, you had better try your best and then if that isn't enough, take it to another level.  He taught them how to be hard workers as he was. Max had one grandchild, Abbie Lorraine Dawson Barker and he spent many wonderful times attending all of her dance recitals, birthday parties and was a super Papa.

Max worked for Orlie Lynch at the Sale Barn for years.  He was one of the leaders of the Worth County Sheriff's Posse in the late 1960's and they toured across the nation. He was also a member of the American Angus Association and was manager of the Gentry Music Opry for several years.  He ran the chain for Tiger football for 50 years and only missed one game. He later liked to drive his truck in the back way to watch the games every Friday night. Max loved his John Deere tractors and drove them in parades and participated in tractor pulls. He spent many happy hours going to Royals baseball games, the Sidney rodeo and the American Royal, enjoying a fried chicken dinner afterward.  He loved country western music.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, W.M.C. and Inez Motsinger Dawson, his brother, John P. Dawson and his infant sister, Phyllis Dawson.  He is survived by his wife, Lyla J. Dawson of the home and his four daughters, Jennifer D. Nicholson of Kansas City, Mo, Deanna J DeBruce of Conception Junction, Missouri, Deborah L. Roberts of Savannah, Missouri and Cynthia L Barker (and Harold Jones) of Cameron, Missouri along with his only grand-daughter, Abbie L.D. Barker. He enjoyed his many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews and is survived by his brother-in-law, Alan Culbertson. He is also missed by his friend and helper for many years with the farm, Rob Foley and had a special relationship with his nephew, Jeremy Culbertson.

Due to the corona virus, open visitation will be held at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City from Wednesday noon through Sunday at 1:30 PM when a procession to Fletchall Cemetery will drive past the family farm. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 at the Cemetery.  Please note that only 10 people can approach the gravesite but all are invited to stay by their cars and a PA system will broadcast the service.  Donations instead of flowers are gratefully accepted payable to the Fletchall Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Hopkins CBC Seeking to Add Playground Equipment

The Hopkins CBC is looking to add playground equipment to the Hopkins City Park on the northwest end of town. They have obtained a quote from Miracle Playground for around $37,000 and are in the process of seeking funding. They are looking at grants and help from other community organizations.

The equipment would be in addition to the equipment already in the park. It would replace old equipment that has been removed from the park due to age.

The CBC is tentatively planning to hold a Barn Quilt show again this year. The tentative date will be September 13th, with a rain date of September 20th. One possibility discussed this year is an Amazing Race theme, where contestants would have to finish one task before completing another, such as free throw shooting, for instance. Recruiting of local and area groups and vendors was discussed at the regular meeting Monday. The goal will be to get 100 barn quilts up around Hopkins by September.

Hopkins City Council Raises Water Rates

The Hopkins City Council, at its regular meeting Monday, raised its water rates by 3% for 12 months. After that time frame, they will revisit the issue and see if any more increases are needed. The vote was unanimous.

The last time the city raised rates was in 2019, and the last time before that, in 2016. The city has the same amount of customers, but water usage has gone down, while costs have gone up. Consequently, the water department made a profit of $51 last year. There are around 280 water customers, and there were 11,872,000 gallons used last year.

The rate went up to $24/month minimum for commercial customers, and $33.99 for residential customers. The rate is for the first 1,000 gallons. Water usage varies widely by customer, with some using as little as 900 gallons a month and some using as much as 35,000. The average water usage is around 3,500 gallons a month. Sewer costs 70% of the water bill.

The cost for the city to produce its own water was $62,000 last year, whereas the cost for it to buy it from the Rural Water District would have been $99,000.

The estimated annual revenue increase for the city was $4,550.52 with a 3% increase. Had the city increased rates 5%, it would have been an estimated $7,319.28. Had the city increased rates 10%, it would have increased revenues an estimated $14,162.76.

Improbable Run Propels Tiger Boys to District Runner-Ups

Worth County’s boys ended an improbable run through districts Friday as they lost to the defending state champion Platte Valley squad 89-46. The Jefferson and South Nodaway cooperative scored 32 points in the first quarter and never looked back despite Tiger efforts to rally.

The Tigers were streaky throughout the year before finishing 12-15 for the year. First, they started off with an impressive 6-3 start, only to drop five out of their next six. They recovered to win Consolation at the Northwest Missouri Tournament and win three in a row, only to drop six in a row. They won ugly against Maysville, 57-45, and nobody was prepared for what came next.

What transpired was a totally different squad that came into districts. Worth County jumped out on Rock Port, 19-6 for the year, and led wire to wire in a 77-70 win. They trailed Stanberry for most of the first half, trailed by as much as nine at one point at halftime, only to come back and outplay the much taller Bulldog squad, which finished at 17-9 on the year. Worth County came back to win 62-51 as Alex Rinehart carried the Tigers in the fourth quarter.

Despite this, Worth County will be searching for respect next year. Nobody on Worth County’s squad made the All-District squad despite them making it all the way to second after being seeded sixth in the tournament. They will have a lot to work with. Alex Rinehart scored 34 in Worth County’s valiant but losing effort against Pattonsburg and 31 in their 55-35 win over Norborne. Aydan Gladstone got better in the high post as the season progressed, getting as many as 9 assists in a game this year. Jackson Runde lit up the scoreboard against Nodaway-Holt.

Grant Cameron and Jackson Smith will step into bigger roles next year. Grant was set back by an injury, but by the end of the year, he was at peak form and made a ton of hustle plays in Worth County’s semifinal win over Stanberry. He had nine rebounds despite giving up 10 inches or so to the Stanberry skyscrapers, hit a couple of 3-pointers, and was all over the floor. Jackson Smith was unafraid of the Platte Valley juggernaut and thrived under the pressure, getting 13 points Friday night.

Worth County will miss the services of Jaxon Anderson next year. Back in 2015, Todd Simmons’ last year at Worth County, he lamented that his junior high boys team would likely win only four games that year. They dropped their first two games, and Simmons had the brilliant idea of putting up his boys against Anna Gladstone, Regan Allee, and the girls team. They lost, but that only served to act as motivation for Jaxon and the Tigers, who won eight out of their next ten and finished at 8-4, twice as many wins as what Simmons had expected.

Anderson moved into Worth County in 2015, and his play totally changed the team around. He made everyone around him better that year, as his long passes would frequently fuel fast breaks that led to a lot of easy baskets.

Jaxon earned playing time during the 2016-2017 season, as Drake Kinsella took him under his wing, and he was able to help out a Tiger team that made it to the Elite Eight two years in a row. He was instrumental in Worth County’s 64-55 win against South Nodaway that year, lighting up the scoreboard against a team that was searching for revenge after Worth County hung 89 on them in their gym a few weeks before. The Tigers had just enough horses on the floor to make a third run last year before losing in the District Finals to Pattonsburg.

It was this year that Jaxon broke out and carried the team on his shoulders. He was a constant presence on the boards this year, regularly getting double figures in rebounding despite only being 6’1”, and he held down enemy post players and kept them from going off. He could play inside, or step outside and shoot 3-pointers, wherever Coach Les New needed him. Jaxon’s clutch play helped Worth County stay in games; his buzzer-beating putback kept Worth County’s chances alive against Pattonsburg this year before they fell in overtime 85-79. He also made a layup at the buzzer against Stanberry in the Albany Tournament as they won 48-47 in the opening round in December.

Zayne Swope, who hadn’t played the last three years, came off the bench and provided valuable minutes during the St. Joseph Christian game, taking charges on defense and running the floor and making hustle plays. Bob Baker played lights-out defense in the paint in Worth County’s 56-24 win over Braymer; he and Zayne were both well-liked, as was Hayden Holmes.

Next year, Levi Cassavaugh will get more minutes, as he can handle the ball for the Tigers. Tyler New, despite his small size, will be a force as a freshman, breaking down defenses. Rinehart, Runde, and Gladstone are only sophomores this year, so the sky will be the limit for them.
