Steven Willhite Erupts as Shamrock Boys Down Tina-Avalon

Steven Willhite erupted for 29 points and 15 boards against Tina-Avalon as the Shamrocks overcame an early deficit and pulled away in the second half for the 72-55 win. Connor Jenkins had the hot hand early for the Dragons, erupting for 13 points in the last 5:32 of the first quarter to erase an early 8-4 Shamrock lead. That included two guarded threes, one of which came at the first quarter buzzer to give Tina-Avalon a 19-17 lead.

With only one win, Tina-Avalon was easy to overlook, but they had played all but one of their opponents tough this year. Owen Bell put the Dragons up 21-17, but then Brett Emig cut inside and got a pass from Cruz Ury and then Kaden Koch got a putback to knot it at 21, drawing Jenkins' third foul in the process. Koch missed the free throw, but the third foul on Jenkins was critical, as it turned what was a tight game into a track meet, which was in North Harrison's favor. North Harrison would go on to outscore Tina-Avalon 45-15 after Jenkins picked up his third foul, not letting up until the fourth quarter, when the game was well in hand.

After Jenkins went to the bench, Willhite carried the Shamrocks on his shoulders with 14 points in the period. Tina-Avalon tried to hang with North Harrison for a while, tying it at 24, 26, and 28. But then North Harrison got some separation when Willhite hit a 3-pointer in transition and Brett Emig scored a backdoor look from Willhite to make it 33-28. Owen Hill cut it to 33-30 with five seconds left, but Steven Willhite, who was mostly a 3-point shooter over the last two years, showed some newfound ballhandling ability when he took the ensuing inbounds pass and took it coast to coast, beating the halftime buzzer to put North Harrison up 35-30.

Willhite's layup at the halftime buzzer turned out to be the backbreaker as the Shamrocks came out with all the momentum in the third quarter despite Jenkins' return. Brett Emig scored off a Willhite steal, Kaden Koch scored off a steal, and Willhite showed some newfound ability to steal the ball (5 steals), swiping one for a layup to make it double digits at 41-30. Willhite added a drive and then Cruz Ury scored off a Brett Emig steal to make it 45-30.

Jenkins' three-pointer broke the run, but then Willhite pushed it right back down the court to restart the Shamrocks. Brett Emig scored off a Willhite steal, and then a Willhite block and push down the floor led to another Emig basket to make it 51-33.

Trent Grossman scored to stop the bleeding for the moment, but then Wade Briggs scored off a drive, Willhite blocked a shot, caught it, and went coast to coast, Kaden Koch got behind the defense after Emig pushed it up the floor, and Brett Emig scored off a drive at the third quarter buzzer to make it 59-35.

Cruz Ury scored off a backdoor layup, Willhite scored a 3-point play, and Wade Briggs scored off a drive to make it 66-35 before North Harrison began subbing freely the rest of the way.

Steven Willhite had 29 points. Brett Emig had 18, Kaden Koch 9, Cruz Ury 6, Wade Briggs and Hunter Parkhurst 4 each, and Brandon Hamilton 2.

Steven Willhite had 4 blocks. Hunter Parkhurst and Kaden Koch had 1 each.

The key to North Harrison's win was their rebounding along with sharing the ball; they only allowed two offensive boards, which meant a lot more chances to get out and run. Steven Willhite had 15 boards, Kaden Koch 7, Brett Emig 6, Hunter Parkhurst 4, Wade Briggs and Cruz Ury 2, and Brandon Hamilton 1.

The Shamrocks had 24 assists, which meant they were sharing the ball well. Brett Emig had 8, Steven Willhite 5, Hunter Parkhurst and Cruz Ury 3, Wade Briggs and Collin Briggs 2, and Kaden Koch 1.

Brett Emig had 5 tips. Kaden Koch had 4, Steven Willhite 3, Wade Briggs 2, and Hunter Parkhurst had 1.

Wade Briggs had 7 steals for the Shamrocks. Steven Willhite had 5, Hunter Parkhurst 3, Cruz Ury 2, and Kaden Koch and Brett Emig 1 each.
