Courthouse News for December 11th, 2019

On November 28th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a possible domestic dispute in Kellerton. Jonathan Claus (25) of Kellerton was arrested on a charge of Domestic Assault.

Northwest Missouri Info reports that on November 30th, Dana Thibodeau (32) of Trenton, allegedly discharged a weapon while intoxicated, shooting and wounding a 13 year old person. She is being charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon While Intoxicated, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Bond was set at $5,000, 10% cash or corporate surety.

On November 30th, Buchanan County Assistant Prosecutor Michelle Davidson filed charges against Westyn Williams (20) of Oregon alleging Leaving the Scene. Northwest Missouri Info reports that it was in conjunction with an incident where he allegedly struck a cyclist; subsequently, people took pictures of it and circulated it on social media. Bond was set at $500 cash deposit plus a $2,000 surety bond.

On December 1st, a vehicle driven by Christopher Beier (41) of Grant City on Highway 169 south of Redding struck a pig owned by Dennis Hansen (64) of Redding. The vehicle was totaled, while the pig was killed.

On December 2nd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Levi Law (31) of King City alleging No Insurance.

On December 2nd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Steven McLaughlin (25) of Independence alleging Operating Vehicle Owned by Another Without Financial Responsibility.

On December 2nd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Kenneth Peak (47) of King City alleging No Insurance.

On December 3rd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Travis Hunsicker (31) of Albany alleging Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On December 3rd, Worth County Prosecutor Janet Wake Larison filed charges against Treasa Staton (41) of Grant City alleging 28 counts of State Tax Fraud (Felony), 14 counts Filing a False Sales Tax Return (Felony), Filing a False Missouri Income Tax Return (Felony), 3 counts Failure to File or Pay a Missouri Income Tax Return (Felony), and 2 counts Attempting to Evade or Defeat Income Tax (Felony).

On December 3rd, Worth County Prosecutor Janet Wake Larison filed charges against Robert Staton (47) of Grant City alleging 4 counts Filing a False Missouri Income Tax Return (Felony) and 2 counts Attempting to Evade or Defeat Missouri Income Tax (Felony).

On December 3rd, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Taylor Sue Schaffer (28) of Mount Ayr for Failure to Appear.

On December 3, 2019, Nodaway County Deputies served a search warrant for drugs at a residence on 285th Street near Route F. During the search, Deputies recovered “Vape Cartridges” labeled at over 90 and 95 % THC. A scale, paraphernalia, marijuana, and a mushroom were recovered. On December 4, 2019, Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Rice charged Carl T Hendren with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 1st degree a class D Felony, Delivery of Less Than 35 grams of marijuana, a class E Felony, and Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class D Felony. Hendren is currently on parole.

On October 28th, the Freedom From Religion Foundation wrote a threatening letter to the Cameron School District regarding the football team’s prayers. The allegation was that the coaches had been holding religious “chapel” services for players before and after football games. The FFRF says these practices violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. On December 3rd, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office sent a letter to the school district promising support if the FFRF were to file suit. Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt argued that public invocations to God constitute a cherished part of national history, the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld public prayers, and that the First Amendment protects the rights of public school students to engage in voluntary prayer in public spaces. Attorney General Schmitt noted that presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama had publicly invoked God in public, and by the FFRF’s logic, their prayers would be unconstitutional as well. Quoting the late Justice Antonin Scalia, the Missouri Attorney General said such threats resemble, “some ghoul in a late-night horror movie that repeatedly sits up in its grave and shuffled abroad after being repeatedly killed and buried.”

On December 3rd, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Norman Boswell (54) of Mount Ayr on charges of Driving While Suspended and Possession of Controlled Substance.

On December 3rd, Joseph Anderson (40) of Richmond pleaded guilty in Livingston County to charges of Harassment (Felony). He was sentenced to seven years in the Department of Corrections. Court retains jurisdiction and reserves the right to call back the defendant after 120 days for possible parole or probation. Northwest Missouri Info reports that it involved alleged threats to kill a Livingston County deputy.

On December 4th, Judge Roger Prokes sentenced Matthew Lebow (34) to 10 years for Child Molestation (Felony) in conjunction with an incident involving a four year old girl.

On December 4th, Worth County Prosecutor Janet Wake Larison filed charges against Sara Miller (36) of Denver alleging No Insurance, Failure to Register, and No Insurance.

On December 4th, Special Prosecutor Barbara Klima filed charges against Carl McCartney (37) of McFall in Gentry County alleging Non-Support (Felony).

On December 5th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Dwan Marshall (23) of Maryville alleging Stealing.

The Maryville Forum reported in its December 5th edition that Lawrence Wayne Davison, the man accused of killing his father, Charles Davison, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. On January 25th, Lawrence had called 911 and said that his father had not gotten off the floor two days earlier since he had hit him. He said he had not called before because he was scared to go to jail, but became worried Charles would die if he didn’t make the call.

On December 5th, Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer filed charges against Amy White (39) of Turney (MO) alleging Fraudulently Stopping Payment of an Instrument.

On December 5th, Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer filed charges against Ty Cox (20) of Wichita (KS) alleging Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, No Valid License, and Speeding.

On December 6th, KQ2 reports that a Livingston County deputy was nearly struck by a vehicle heading the wrong direction on Route 36 near Wheeling (MO). The vehicle continued to head east in the westbound lanes, turned on Route 65, and continued traveling at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. The driver was clocked near the Hamilton exit on 36 as going 108 miles per hour in the wrong lane.

KQ2 reports that on the night of December 6th, a police operation targeting crime and fleeing vehicles resulted in 50 traffic stops and 13 arrests in St. Joseph.

KQ2 and KMA reported that on December 6th, a duck hunter went missing near Rock Port. He was found later that morning in the Missouri River trapped in cold water. He was transported via National Guard to an Omaha hospital.

On December 6th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Jonathan Prough (35) of Dobson (NC) in Harrison County on a Lafayette County Warrant for Failure to Appear (2 Traffic Violations).

The Maryville Forum reported that on December 6th, Judge Corey Herron dismissed a lawsuit brought by Rick Stanton against the City of Skidmore. Stanton had sued the city, which was seeking removal of his trailer, which is blocking an alley in Skidmore. Stanton had argued that the city was engaging in selective enforcement. The city had argued that the enforcement of its ordinances against other parties was irrelevant. Stanton had argued that the city had abandoned the alley in question. Judge Herron noted that the city cannot relinquish ownership of a property by inaction.

On December 8th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Charles Burnett (36) of McFall in Gentry County on a Livingston County Felony Warrant (Stealing).

On December 8th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Janell Taylor (27) of Kansas City in Harrison County a charges of Possession of Marijuana and a Misdemeanor Warrant from Montgomery County.

On December 8th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Blake Smith (31) of Clearmont alleging Violation of a Protection Order.

On December 9th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Dana Ritchie (23) of Sunrise Beach (MO) alleging No Valid License and Displaying Plates Belonging to Another.

On December 9th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Robert Reid (47) of St. Joseph alleging Driving While Revoked and Failure to Display Headlights.

On December 9th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Laura King (23) of Grant City in Worth County on a charge of Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Felony). She was subsequently charged by Worth County Prosecutor Janet Wake Larison.

On December 9th, Special Prosecutor Barbara Klima filed charges against Randall Peak (34) of King City in Gentry County alleging two counts Non-Support.

Charges listed are mere allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
