With North Nodaway using a balanced attack to make runs at the Shamrocks, they needed all of their cogs to keep the lead. Hunter Parkhurst had 8 assists, repeatedly finding the open man inside, while Steven Willhite shared rebounding honors with Koch, getting 12 each. At the end of the day, it was the battle of the boards that mattered, with North Harrison outrebounding North Nodaway 37-27 and forcing the blue shirts to the bench with foul trouble trying to stop the undersized Koch along with Emig inside.
North Nodaway, with many different weapons from behind the arc, got out to an 8-5 lead at the 4:21 mark after Austin Bird hit a guarded three. But then Koch went to work, getting on the line at will and adding a putback, while Brett Emig was pushing it up the floor for the Shamrocks. Hunter Parkhurst added a pair of free throws to put the Shamrocks in front 14-10 after one.
Cameron Wilson, who had been a sparkplug for the Mustangs against West Nodaway, did all he could in the second quarter, getting a triple at one point to bring his team back to within 16-15. But then Steven Willhite cleaned up on a miss, Wade Briggs scored off a steal, and Brett Emig scored off a Cruz Ury steal and added a putback to make it 24-15 as Wilson went to the bench with three fouls.
Ryan Riley tried to get the blue shirts going with an NBA triple that made it 24-18, but Koch got a putback and Wade Briggs hit a triple from the top of the key to make it 29-18 and the green shirts went into the locker with a 34-24 halftime lead.
The fouls mounted for the Mustangs against the relentless offensive pressure of North Harrison and the lead grew to 16 when Wade Briggs hit another three-pointer to make it 43-27. Ryan Riley had his third foul, while Cameron Wilson picked up his fourth, as did Andrew Blackford.
Despite his foul trouble, Andrew Blackford put the Mustangs on his back for a stretch, hitting six straight points to make it 47-36 with 2:51 left and forcing North Harrison in a timeout, their third of the game. But then Wade Briggs hit from the left wing, Brett Emig got the ball in the high post and scored off a drive, and Hunter Parkhurst got loose in transition and got a pass from Briggs to make it 53-36. The lead grew further after Wilson picked up his fifth foul, with Parkhurst hitting a free throw to make it 57-38 early in the fourth.
But then Austin Bird put the Mustangs on his back and nearly brought them back, putting up 11 points in the final period. It was similar to the outburst of Cody Wood two years ago when the same teams were playing. The Mustangs had a frantic rally behind Wood fall three points short that night.
Bird hit a three to get things started, then Andrew Blackford went coast to coast to make it 57-43. Ryan Riley picked up his fourth foul, but the Mustangs kept coming as Tyler Bix cut inside to get a pass from Riley and Bird lit it up from downtown again. Riley, normally a gunner, was dishing it out at will, getting eight assists for the night.
North Nodaway was still trailing 57-48, and Wade Briggs’ three seemingly restored order again for the Shamrocks. But then Bird hit another triple and then got a steal, finishing over the much taller Steven Willhite to make it 60-53 with 4:14 left.
But following a timeout, Steven Willhite hit a triple to make it 63-53. Wyatt O’Riley scored from inside, but then Brett Emig went coast to coast to make it 65-55 again. Ryan Riley picked up his fifth foul and then North Harrison was able to get it into Koch at will in the closing minutes.
