Junior High Tigers Avenge North Harrison Loss

Worth County’s junior high girls went 1-2, dropping games to solid Princeton and Albany squads at the North Harrison Junior High Tournament last week, but avenged one of their earlier losses, beating North Harrison 32-17 last Tuesday night.

With the win, the Tigers ended their season with five wins after dropping several games in a row, including one to the Shamrocks. But the Tigers went on a roll, beating North Nodaway, taking two out of three at the NEN Tournament and beating a St. Gregory’s school that had beaten them before, and downing Albany.

The difference in the games was the rebounding; the Tigers outrebounded North Harrison 37-21 in Tuesday’s game and got the Shamrocks on the bench with foul trouble. The game was knotted at 2, 4, and 6 in the first quarter, with Trendi Johnson with the hot hand for North Harrison. Worth County got on the line and hit their free throws in the second, moving ahead by as much as 14-9 before consecutive pullups from Trendi Johnson and Halle Morgan made it 14-13 again at halftime.

Worth County moved in front again to start the third as Kynah Steele scored off a drive and then went coast to coast for another layup; Kara-Jean Staton hit from the high post to make it 20-13. A Shamrock press stymied Worth County for a while, but then Halle Morgan picked up her fourth and fifth fouls and Trendi Johnson her third as the score was stuck at 20-13 for the last few minutes.

The foul trouble finally sealed North Harrison’s fate as Abbi Brown scored backdoor and Kara-Jean Staton hit another shot from the high post to make it 24-13. Jaci Davis cut it to 24-15, but Autumn Cousatte hit a backdoor look and then Amber Wilson picked up her fifth foul for North Harrison. Cousatte converted a three-point play in transition, and Steele scored from inside, while and Autumn Cousatte added a free throw to make it 32-15.
