Alex Rinehart’s Outburst Lifts Tiger Boys Past NEN

Worth County’s boys used a 13 point outburst from Alex Rinehart in the second quarter to propel themselves past Northeast Nodaway last Tuesday and get the 51-37 win.

Everything started off well for the Bluejays as one of Worth County’s players got a technical for dunking during warmups; Auston Pride hit the free throws, Ben Boswell hit a three from the left wing, and Pride added a drive to put Northeast up 7-2 right off the bat. Jaxon Anderson countered with a traditional three point play, but Nate Schieber got a putback to put the Bluejays up 9-5 with 4:41 left.

But for the rest of the game, Northeast struggled to run their offense. Normally a man to man team, Worth County went to a 2-3 zone for the game, and Northeast struggled to get good looks against it. Meanwhile, Alex Rinehart scored off a steal and Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer off another Rinehart steal to put Worth County up 10-9 after one.

Rinehart scored off a pair of drives to put Worth County up 14-11 at the 5:15 mark. Reed McIntyre, Ben Boswell, and Auston Pride all countered to put the Bluejays back in front 17-14, but then Aydan Gladstone hit Alex Rinehart for an NBA three to knot it up again at 17.

The game was tied up once more at 19, but then Alex scored on a scoop shot to make it 21-19 with 1:18 left. On the ensuing Bluejay possession, one of their players lost their composure after the team turned the ball over and got a technical foul from Referee Aaron Behrens. That swung the momentum in Worth County’s favor, as Rinehart hit the ensuing free throws and Jackson Runde scored two free throws on the subsequent free possession to make it 25-19; Worth County got four points without Northeast Nodaway touching the ball. Runde was fouled with two seconds left and hit two more free throws to make it 27-19 at the half.

The Bluejays managed to stop the bleeding in the third quarter and force Worth County into foul trouble as Jaxon Anderson got his third foul in the period. The blue shirts got the deficit down to 31-27, but then Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to make it seven again going into the fourth.

Aydan Gladstone then drove and spun his way for a basket and Jackson Smith hit a 3-pointer after a Jackson Runde kickout to put Worth County up double digits at 39-27. Lucas Wake hit a shot from the left side after an Aydan Gladstone kickout to make it 41-27.

Ben Boswell’s coast to coast layup with 2:17 left made it 42-31 with 2:17 left, but then Northeast had to start fouling, and Worth County shot 7 for 8 down the stretch as the lead never dropped under double digits.
