Anna Gladstone was honored Friday for scoring her 1,000th point. She did so last year during the Stanberry game in sectionals. At the start of the year, she was at 1,002 career points and was at 1,068 before Friday night’s game. She subsequently scored another 24 points to get to 1,092.
Anna became the fourth Tiger to hit the 1,000 point mark, and the first to do so during her junior year. The others to hit the mark include Nancy Steinhauser, Tiffany Troutwine, and April Miller, with April leading the way at 1,142 points. Ann Parman came close, getting 977 during her career.
The game itself was much easier than expected for the Tigers, who beat Nodaway-Holt 62-22. The Trojans were without two of their players, including Shaina Culp (surgery to remove tonsils). Worth County showed signs of getting healthier, with Regan Allee returning after sustaining a high ankle sprain during preseason and Megan Cassavaugh returning from a deep bruise she had during the Platte Valley game.
Megan Cassavaugh hit Kristin New for three to start, Anna got a steal and added a free throw, and then Kaylee McElvain scored after Kristin New got a steal following an Anna Gladstone top to make it 8-0 with 5:51 left.
Kloe Jenkins kept her team in the game for a while, getting all five points for the Trojans in the period. But Anna Gladstone has begun hitting outside shots this year, and hit a pullup at the first quarter to make it 18-5.
Sometimes, when players are hurt or return from injury, the team takes a while to get on the same page. There were stretches where the team was struggling to find its offensive rhythm in the second quarter as the Trojans hung around for most of the period. But then Worth County got it in three straight times to Kaylee McElvain in the post and Anna Gladstone added another inside shot to put her team up 31-12 at the half.
With only six players dressed out, the Trojans wore down in the second half as Gladstone, McElvain, and Merrideth Spiers all scored in the post and Worth County was able to get some transition looks. Then, Jenna Smith got open twice for threes, including one at the third quarter buzzer to stretch Worth County’s lead to 50-16. It was her second buzzer-beating three this year; she had one against Platte Valley as well.
In the fourth quarter, Anna Gladstone twice worked the offensive glass at will and then got a tip that led to a Megan Cassavaugh steal and Kristin New layup. Anna scored off a Kristin New steal and Megan Cassavaugh feed, and New added another steal before everyone came out with 3:43 left.
Anna Gladstone had 24 to lead the Tigers. Kaylee McElvain had 14, Kristin New 10, Jenna Smith 6, and Regan Allee, Merrideth Spiers, Jill Hardy, and Ali Brown all had 2.
Kristin New, Anna Gladstone, and Hailey Adwell all had blocks.
Anna Gladstone had 12 boards to complete a double double. Kaylee McElvain, Jill Hardy, and Merrideth Spiers had 4, Jenna Smith 3, Megan Cassavaugh and Hailey Adwell 2, and Kristin New and Regan Allee 1.
Megan Cassavaugh had 7 assists. Kaylee McElvain had 4, Kristin New and Anna Gladstone 3, Regan Allee 2, and Merideth Spiers, Taylor Sanders, and Jenna Smith 1.
