A rejuvenated Mustang squad, behind 46 rebounds along with a monster night from Kandace Damgar, grabbed their second straight win as they successfully invaded Cainsville and came away with the 53-27 win over the Bobcats. Just last week, North Nodaway was a team that was struggling to get any kind of win and struggling to score. But then, they got Jadon Dobbins back, and they unexpectedly got Saylor Brown back as well. They wore down Nodaway-Holt last Tuesday 50-33 and broke open a close game in the fourth quarter, and then they pulled away to a 35-14 halftime lead against East Harrison and continued to pull away in the second half.
Kandace Damgar had another big night for the Mustangs, as she had 22 points, 11 tips, and 10 steals to fuel the Mustangs. There was a scary moment early on when she nearly did the splits on the tile floor at Cainsville going for a steal, but she got up and was fine. Having Saylor Brown back made a huge difference on the boards, as she shared rebounding honors with Ellaina Renfro and Sarah Wray; all three had 8 boards. And having Saylor back also helped with the ball movement, as they were able to get a lot more transition looks and Brown was able to find open teammates, to the tune of 7 assists. Her only mishap in her second game back was on one play where she successfully pulled off throwing the ball off the back of one of the orange shirts on an inbounds play, only to miss her ensuing shot. And having Dobbins back gave North Nodaway an extra ball handler who can light up the scoreboard if she's left open.
It looked like it might be a tussle at first; East Harrison came in with a pair of human bulldozers in Camie Vaughn and Hope Ellsworth; Vaughn is one of the most physical post players in the area who can seal at will and squeeze through the smallest gaps, while Ellsworth always looks to drive down the right side of the floor to the baseline for a good look, come hell or high water.
Sure enough, Vaughn had 4 and Ellsworth 2 as the Bobcats led 6-4 in the early going. But then Saylor Brown came off the bench and connected on a shot in the high post, Jacquelyn Cline hit a 3-pointer, and then Kandace Damgar lit up the scoreboard, getting behind the defense twice in transition and adding a 3-pointer to put her team up 16-6 after one.
Cline then knocked down a three to start the second; then, Damgar connected from the left wing off a kickout from Sarah Wray and added a steal to make it 24-6. Vaughn got behind the defense to make it 24-8, but then Jacquelyn Cline scored off a drive and Damgar hit from the top of the key for three after Cline got her the ball to make it 29-8 and force East Harrison into a timeout.
Back to back threes from Alyssa Olson cut it to 31-14, but then Kelsi Barcus and Karissa Oberhauser countered for North Nodaway to put them up 35-14.
North Nodaway began subbing freely in the second half as they continued to pull away slowly in the third quarter. Kandace Damgar hit a three after Jacquelyn Cline kept a possession alive with an offensive board, Saylor Brown hit two free throws after driving into Vaughn and Ellsworth and drawing a shooting foul, and Kandace Damgar got behind the defense in transition again.
The supporting cast got into the scoring column as Karissa Oberhauser connected from the left baseline, Kelsi Barcus hit from the high post and added a free throw, and Jadon Dobbins connected in traffic after grabbing an offensive carom while Brown added a steal and a putback as North Nodaway grew their lead to as big as 53-23.
Kandace Damgar had 22 points, while Saylor Brown had 10, Jacquelyn Cline 8, Kelsi Barcus 5, Karissa Oberhauser 4, and Sarah Wray and Jadon Dobbins 2.
