Steven Willhite Erupts as Shamrock Boys Down Tina-Avalon
Steven Willhite erupted for 29 points and 15 boards against Tina-Avalon as the Shamrocks overcame an early deficit and pulled away in the second half for the 72-55 win. Connor Jenkins had the hot hand early for the Dragons, erupting for 13 points in the last 5:32 of the first quarter to erase an early 8-4 Shamrock lead. That included two guarded threes, one of which came at the first quarter buzzer to give Tina-Avalon a 19-17 lead.
With only one win, Tina-Avalon was easy to overlook, but they had played all but one of their opponents tough this year. Owen Bell put the Dragons up 21-17, but then Brett Emig cut inside and got a pass from Cruz Ury and then Kaden Koch got a putback to knot it at 21, drawing Jenkins' third foul in the process. Koch missed the free throw, but the third foul on Jenkins was critical, as it turned what was a tight game into a track meet, which was in North Harrison's favor. North Harrison would go on to outscore Tina-Avalon 45-15 after Jenkins picked up his third foul, not letting up until the fourth quarter, when the game was well in hand.
After Jenkins went to the bench, Willhite carried the Shamrocks on his shoulders with 14 points in the period. Tina-Avalon tried to hang with North Harrison for a while, tying it at 24, 26, and 28. But then North Harrison got some separation when Willhite hit a 3-pointer in transition and Brett Emig scored a backdoor look from Willhite to make it 33-28. Owen Hill cut it to 33-30 with five seconds left, but Steven Willhite, who was mostly a 3-point shooter over the last two years, showed some newfound ballhandling ability when he took the ensuing inbounds pass and took it coast to coast, beating the halftime buzzer to put North Harrison up 35-30.
Willhite's layup at the halftime buzzer turned out to be the backbreaker as the Shamrocks came out with all the momentum in the third quarter despite Jenkins' return. Brett Emig scored off a Willhite steal, Kaden Koch scored off a steal, and Willhite showed some newfound ability to steal the ball (5 steals), swiping one for a layup to make it double digits at 41-30. Willhite added a drive and then Cruz Ury scored off a Brett Emig steal to make it 45-30.
Jenkins' three-pointer broke the run, but then Willhite pushed it right back down the court to restart the Shamrocks. Brett Emig scored off a Willhite steal, and then a Willhite block and push down the floor led to another Emig basket to make it 51-33.
Trent Grossman scored to stop the bleeding for the moment, but then Wade Briggs scored off a drive, Willhite blocked a shot, caught it, and went coast to coast, Kaden Koch got behind the defense after Emig pushed it up the floor, and Brett Emig scored off a drive at the third quarter buzzer to make it 59-35.
Cruz Ury scored off a backdoor layup, Willhite scored a 3-point play, and Wade Briggs scored off a drive to make it 66-35 before North Harrison began subbing freely the rest of the way.
Steven Willhite had 29 points. Brett Emig had 18, Kaden Koch 9, Cruz Ury 6, Wade Briggs and Hunter Parkhurst 4 each, and Brandon Hamilton 2.
Steven Willhite had 4 blocks. Hunter Parkhurst and Kaden Koch had 1 each.
The key to North Harrison's win was their rebounding along with sharing the ball; they only allowed two offensive boards, which meant a lot more chances to get out and run. Steven Willhite had 15 boards, Kaden Koch 7, Brett Emig 6, Hunter Parkhurst 4, Wade Briggs and Cruz Ury 2, and Brandon Hamilton 1.
The Shamrocks had 24 assists, which meant they were sharing the ball well. Brett Emig had 8, Steven Willhite 5, Hunter Parkhurst and Cruz Ury 3, Wade Briggs and Collin Briggs 2, and Kaden Koch 1.
Brett Emig had 5 tips. Kaden Koch had 4, Steven Willhite 3, Wade Briggs 2, and Hunter Parkhurst had 1.
Wade Briggs had 7 steals for the Shamrocks. Steven Willhite had 5, Hunter Parkhurst 3, Cruz Ury 2, and Kaden Koch and Brett Emig 1 each.

Ice Cold Lady Shamrocks Fall to Tina-Avalon
There was no rest for the weary for North Harrison's girls as they fell 34-21 against the skyscrapers from Tina-Avalon in Trenton Monday. The Dragons came into the game with Samantha Rounkles at 6'1", Morgan Brockmeier at 6'0", Kadie Rounkles at 5'11", and Maggie Brockmeier at 5'10". The Shamrocks were ice cold from the field, couldn't buy a board against the taller Dragon squad, and couldn't take it in on them as the Dragons pulled away in the second half.
The game started off as a defensive struggle, but soon it became evident that the Shamrocks were getting one shot down the court and done. As the ball clanked hopelessly off the rim and into the hands of the Tina-Avalon skyscrapers, they pulled away to a 10-2 lead midway through the second. North Harrison didn't get a single offensive board until the 3:15 mark of the second, which they converted into an Ashlynn Gilpatrick 3-pointer.
The Shamrocks fought back to within 13-7 at the half and then tied it up with back to back threes from Emma Craig and Camden Castleberry at the 6:28 mark of the third quarter. North Harrison switched from their usual man to a zone. The deficit hovered between 1 and 3 for the next few minutes, but then Tina-Avalon, who had scored 40 or more in all their games despite having just one win, started hitting from the outside at will while North Harrison went cold. The lead grew again to 25-18 after three before Samantha Rounkles scored seven in the fourth as her team pulled away.
Camden Castleberry had 6 points for North Harrison. Emma Craig and Kami Gibson had 4, Ashlynn Gilpatrick 3, Rainey Fordyce 2, and Carly Rinehart 2. Emma Craig had 8 boards. Kami Gibson had 6, Rainey Fordyce, Jayliegh Robins, and Camden Castleberry 3, and Carly Rinehart, Trendi Johnson, and Halle Morgan 1 each.

Tiger Girls Score 25 in Third, Blank Christian
Worth County's girls basketball team frequently takes a long time to get going. But once they get going, they turn into a juggernaut and put the other team away. They did so against St. Joseph Christian, scoring 25 unanswered points against the Lions to turn a 25-10 halftime lead into a safe 50-10 lead. Unlike the North Andrew game, it wasn't a single play that sparked them. They were simply more fundamentally sound with the ball. After struggling against multiple defensive looks from the Lions, in which they didn't know what they were going up against in the first half, they committed one turnover from the start of the third quarter to the four minute mark of the fourth, when Coach Les New took out his starters. They also only gave up one offensive board against the Lions during that time stretch.
Worth County started off slowly against the Lions, with some sloppy play early on. But then Anna Gladstone got a block, pushed ahead, and kicked it out to Kristin New for three to erase a 2-0 deficit. Kaylee McElvain added another and then hit two free throws. Regan Allee drove and threw up a prayer that somehow went in, and converted a three point play to make it 12-2. Anna Gladstone then scored off a steal, got another layup off a Jenna Smith steal, and then Kristin New got a block on the defense end and Jill Hardy pushed it ahead to her to make it 18-2 after one.
Christian wouldn't go away, as they started solving Worth County's 1-3-1 trapping zone and getting Ella Bowman some good looks in the post to close to within 21-10. But then Anna got going again, scoring off a Kaylee McElvain steal to make it 23-10. Late in the first half, Jacqi Carlson injured her ankle battling with Merrideth Spiers for a board, and was done for the night; without their best defender and ballhandler, Christian didn't have an answer for Worth County's scoring barrage in the second half.
Megan Cassavaugh twice got the ball into Kaylee McElvain in the post and Kristin New hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key and then Anna Gladstone converted a steal into a three point play to make it 35-10, forcing Christian into a timeout. But Kristin New had the hot hand in the third quarter along with Anna; she hit a triple from the top of the key again and added a steal. Anna then got a steal and then scored again off a Kristin New steal to make it 44-10 and force Christian into another time out.
But Worth County was not finished as Anna Gladstone scored off another steal and then Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer after Jenna Smith kept a possession alive with an offensive board. Merrideth Spiers capped the run with a free throw to put Worth County up 50-10 late in the third.
Anna Gladstone had 21 points to lead the Tigers. Kristin New had 14, Kaylee McElvain 10, Regan Allee 6, and Merrideth Spiers 3. Anna Gladstone had 8 tips, and Kaylee McElvain had 7 steals. Regan Allee had 5 steals and Anna Gladstone 4.

Boys Develop Depth vs. Christian Despite Loss
Worth County's boys were down one player, and they were down another as Alex Rinehart was not there (Vacation). They had to develop some depth against a solid St. Joseph Christian squad, which was a well-oiled machine that could beat anyone on a given night. Levi Cassavaugh, Zayne Swope, and Lucas Wake were all pressed into service for Friday's game, and they all stepped up and did some good things for the Tigers. Worth County saw a halftime lead slip away in the second half thanks to some foul trouble and they fell to the Lions 47-41, but they were able to develop some depth for future games.
Against North Nodaway, Christian got into too much of a rhythm and made shot after shot with a hand in their faces. But Worth County never allowed them to do that, and they erased an early 5-2 deficit as Jaxon Anderson drove into the teeth of the red shirts and got a three-point play, Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer, and Anderson hit a guarded three to put Worth County up 13-5 going into the second.
The foul trouble started to mount for the Tigers as Anderson picked up his third foul, but despite an unforced turnover in which they stepped on the inbounds line, and another sequence where they gave up five straight offensive boards to the Lions, Worth County somehow maintained a 24-20 lead at the half. Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer late to make it four after the Lions had closed to within one, and then Lucas Wake took a charge on defense to prevent a layup and keep the home side in front.
Runde put the Tigers up 29-22 in the third, but then the turnovers and foul trouble began to mount, with Aydan Gladstone picking up his fourth foul and the Lions moving ahead 31-29 on Caleb Carlson's drive with 1:55 left.
Zayne Swope stepped up and took a charge on defense to stop the bleeding and then scored off a drive to tie it at 31, but then post player Camden Lutz stepped out and hit back to back threes to put the Lions back up 37-31 after three.
Jaxon Anderson did all he could at the start of the fourth to bring the Tigers back, getting six straight points to make it 39-37. But then Carson Bowman scored from inside and then cleaned up on a Lion miss in transition after a gutterball from Worth County to make it 43-37 with 2:07 left. Zayne Swope struck again, hitting two free throws after getting loose off a drive, but then Carlson scored from inside and Worth County had to start fouling and couldn't catch up.
Jaxon Anderson had 17 points to lead the Tigers. Jackson Runde had 12, Aydan Gladstone 6, Zayne Swope 4, and Lucas Wake 2. Jaxon Anderson had 12 boards for the Tigers.

Grant City to Hold Bond Election For Sewer Project
The Grant City Council will hold a $2.2 million bond election for the wastewater project. It will be on the April ballot. Approval for the measure was given at the regular December 18th election of the Grant City Council.
The council voted to approve the Blue Cross/Blue Shield renewal for the city with John Joe.
Two building permits were approved for the city. The first one will be a pole barn structure for the Grant City Christian Church. The other structure will be a storage shed for the Worth County School.
Clerk Lana Robinson has been going through all the old documents in the basement to purge the ones they no longer need to keep. Maintenance workers have taken a truckload to the university in Maryville to shred documents at no cost to the city.
The city is required to keep all utility billing documents for each customer until they move from the residence or city, plus five years. Therefore, the city has to keep all of them indefinitely. The clerk has been working on getting all of the past documents scanned into the computer and will be saving them on a zip drive to clear up storage space in the basement.

The Food Service Program was rated as average. Strengths listed included the staff, and the active engagement of the district wellness committee. Concerns listed including the fact that $17,496 in funds were used to support the program. Also cited were low participation of high school students in the breakfast program, a fire suppression hood was needed for the ranges, a new serving line was needed, and new staff needing additional food service specific training.
Recommendations include continuing to work on economizing, such as food costs, decreasing food waste, and decreasing non-food expenses when possible. Other recommendations include continuing to implement “Grab and Go” in the high school; participation has doubled since implementation; however, numbers are still low. Other recommendations included seeking training opportunities for the staff and continuing to seek out options for installing a fire suppression hood.
The Transportation program was rated as “Excellent.” Strengths included the fact that all school bus drivers have the School Bus endorsement and went through 8 hours of training in Maryville. A new bus was added to the fleet in 2017-2018. Concerns listed included the age and condition of the school bus fleet and the school vehicles, as well as the need for more drivers.

Rejuvenated Mustang Girls Drop East Harrison Behind 46 Boards, Damgar's Triple Double
A rejuvenated Mustang squad, behind 46 rebounds along with a monster night from Kandace Damgar, grabbed their second straight win as they successfully invaded Cainsville and came away with the 53-27 win over the Bobcats. Just last week, North Nodaway was a team that was struggling to get any kind of win and struggling to score. But then, they got Jadon Dobbins back, and they unexpectedly got Saylor Brown back as well. They wore down Nodaway-Holt last Tuesday 50-33 and broke open a close game in the fourth quarter, and then they pulled away to a 35-14 halftime lead against East Harrison and continued to pull away in the second half.
Kandace Damgar had another big night for the Mustangs, as she had 22 points, 11 tips, and 10 steals to fuel the Mustangs. There was a scary moment early on when she nearly did the splits on the tile floor at Cainsville going for a steal, but she got up and was fine. Having Saylor Brown back made a huge difference on the boards, as she shared rebounding honors with Ellaina Renfro and Sarah Wray; all three had 8 boards. And having Saylor back also helped with the ball movement, as they were able to get a lot more transition looks and Brown was able to find open teammates, to the tune of 7 assists. Her only mishap in her second game back was on one play where she successfully pulled off throwing the ball off the back of one of the orange shirts on an inbounds play, only to miss her ensuing shot. And having Dobbins back gave North Nodaway an extra ball handler who can light up the scoreboard if she's left open.
It looked like it might be a tussle at first; East Harrison came in with a pair of human bulldozers in Camie Vaughn and Hope Ellsworth; Vaughn is one of the most physical post players in the area who can seal at will and squeeze through the smallest gaps, while Ellsworth always looks to drive down the right side of the floor to the baseline for a good look, come hell or high water.
Sure enough, Vaughn had 4 and Ellsworth 2 as the Bobcats led 6-4 in the early going. But then Saylor Brown came off the bench and connected on a shot in the high post, Jacquelyn Cline hit a 3-pointer, and then Kandace Damgar lit up the scoreboard, getting behind the defense twice in transition and adding a 3-pointer to put her team up 16-6 after one.
Cline then knocked down a three to start the second; then, Damgar connected from the left wing off a kickout from Sarah Wray and added a steal to make it 24-6. Vaughn got behind the defense to make it 24-8, but then Jacquelyn Cline scored off a drive and Damgar hit from the top of the key for three after Cline got her the ball to make it 29-8 and force East Harrison into a timeout.
Back to back threes from Alyssa Olson cut it to 31-14, but then Kelsi Barcus and Karissa Oberhauser countered for North Nodaway to put them up 35-14.
North Nodaway began subbing freely in the second half as they continued to pull away slowly in the third quarter. Kandace Damgar hit a three after Jacquelyn Cline kept a possession alive with an offensive board, Saylor Brown hit two free throws after driving into Vaughn and Ellsworth and drawing a shooting foul, and Kandace Damgar got behind the defense in transition again.
The supporting cast got into the scoring column as Karissa Oberhauser connected from the left baseline, Kelsi Barcus hit from the high post and added a free throw, and Jadon Dobbins connected in traffic after grabbing an offensive carom while Brown added a steal and a putback as North Nodaway grew their lead to as big as 53-23.
Kandace Damgar had 22 points, while Saylor Brown had 10, Jacquelyn Cline 8, Kelsi Barcus 5, Karissa Oberhauser 4, and Sarah Wray and Jadon Dobbins 2.
Ellaina Renfro, Saylor Brown, and Sarah Wray all had 8 boards. Kelsi Barcus had 7, Kandace Damgar 6, Karissa Oberhauser 4, Jacquelyn Cline 3, and Jadon Dobbins 2.
Saylor Brown had 7 assists. Jacquelyn Cline had 4, Kandace Damgar 3, and Ellaina Renfro and Sarah Wray had 1.
Kandace Damgar had 11 tips. Saylor Brown had 6, Jacquelyn Cline had 4, Karissa Oberhauser 3, Sarah Wray and Jadon Dobbins 2, and Sarah Wray 1.

Shorthanded Mustang Boys Grind Out Win Over Bobcats
North Nodaway's boys came in shorthanded into Thursday's game with East Harrison, playing without Cameron Wilson (family) and Austin Bird (leg), but they were able to grind out a 57-51 win over East Harrison. Tyler Bix stepped up his game, getting 21 points, frequently driving into the teeth of a huge front line anchored by Austin Vaughn. Despite using just five players, North Nodaway built up a nine point halftime lead and then turned back repeated Bobcat efforts to get back into the game.
Both teams started off red hot, with North Nodaway leading 12-11 late in the first quarter before the orange shirts pulled away to a 20-14 first quarter lead after Adam Rinehart's triple. It looked like a repeat of the Christian game, where the Lions made shot after shot with a hand in their faces, but the Bobcats cooled off in the second while the Mustangs heated up. Tyler Bix and Ryan Riley each had 7 points in the second; after Riley opened with two free throws, the Mustangs hit three straight 3-pointers to go up 25-20 with 5:24 left in the second.
The teams went through a three minute scoring drought, and then Austin Vaughn hit an inside shot to break the ice for the orange shirts. But then Ryan Riley got a putback and Andrew Blackford hit a 3-pointer to make it 30-22, and the Mustangs pulled away to a 34-25 halftime lead.
The lead grew to 13 early in the third as Karson Oberhauser hit Tyler Bix backdoor, and Ryan Riley scored off a steal to make it 38-25, but then East Harrison started to rally as Hunter Kirk scored from inside, Mark Willis hit a 3-pointer and scored off a cut inside, and big man Austin Vaughn converted a 3-point play as the Bobcats closed back to within six. But then Andrew Blackford drove down the right side and finished over the teeth of the Bobcat defense and Tyler Bix scored after Karson Oberhauser got a tip, Blackford got a steal, and Ryan Riley got it to him to make it 45-35 late in the third.
Adam Rinehart cut it to 45-37 at the end of three, but then Karson Oberhauser scored off a putback, and then Bix made three out of four at the line to make it 50-37 again. Wyatt O'Riley scored to make it 52-38, but then East Harrison started getting it into their bulldozer, Austin Vaughn, and Mark Willis hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 52-43. Bix hit at the line to make it 53-43, but then Adam Rinehart hit a guarded three from the left wing to make it seven again. Karson Oberhauser got a putback, but Willis' putback for the Bobcats made it seven again at 55-48, and they got the ball back after a back court violation with 1:05 left with a chance to cut it to four or five. But Willis' baseline shot went astray, Bix got behind the defense for a layup to make it 57-48, and East Harrison could not get another basket until Hunter Kirk hit a triple with three seconds left.
Tyler Bix had 21 points to lead the Mustangs. Karson Oberhauser had 12, Andrew Blackford and Ryan Riley 11, and Wyatt O'Riley 2. Ryan Riley and Karson Oberhauser had 12 boards each. Tyler Bix had 8, Wyatt O'Riley 5, and Andrew Blackford 3. Ryan Riley and Karson Oberhauser had 5 assists each.

Bluejay Boys Tame Osborn Again
Northeast Nodaway's boys got back on the winning track last Tuesday night when they beat Osborn 48-41, downing the Wildcats for the second time this year. They jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one, and then held off Osborn's attempts to get back in the game. The key to winning for the Bluejays this year seems to be their scoring; when they score 40 or more points this year, they are 3-1 this year. When they fail to do so, they are 0-3. Their defense has kept them in most of their games.
Ben Boswell had 21 points for the Bluejays. Mitchell Sherry had 9, Dylan McIntyre 6, Reed McIntyre and Auston Pride 4 each, and Drew Wiederholt and Nate Schieber 2 each. Ben Boswell had three 3-pointers, while Mitchell Sherry had 2. The Bluejays were 5 for 10 from the line.
The girls lost their game to Osborn 51-25.

Alex Rinehart Scores 28; Tiger Boys Beat Cards for First Time in Recent Memory
Worth County's boys beat North Andrew for the first time since at least the 2006-07 season, as Alex Rinehart went off on them for 28 points and the Tigers pulled away for the 55-42 win. The undefeated Cardinal squad threw multiple looks at the Tigers in an effort to confuse them, but Worth County got stronger as the game progressed and broke up a tight game.
Like the girls, the boys have struggled over the years playing the Cardinals. Unlike the girls, there wasn't any single play that got the Tigers going; they were simply smarter with the ball. At the 3:45 mark of the third quarter, the game was tied at 26-26, and Worth County had 17 turnovers up to that point. But from then on out, the Tigers outscored North Andrew 29-16 and only turned the ball over three times the rest of the way.
Alex Rinehart scored in transition, Jaxon Anderson took a charge on defense, and Alex hit a triple to put the Tigers up 5-0 right off the bat. Jaxon's charge had an effect on the Cardinals, who were afraid to take it in on them for the next stretch. Jaden Baker's three cut Worth County's lead to 5-4, but Alex Rinehart scored one of his own to put Worth County up 11-6 after one.
North Andrew switched between a man to man, a 2-3, and a trapping zone all night to confuse the Tigers, and they rallied to tie it at 15 behind #20, an undersized post who flashed hard, ran the floor, and worked the inside all night long and kept them in the game. But Alex Rinehart scored off a drive and Jackson Runde scored from the right side to put Worth County back in front 20-15.
But the turnovers were mounting for the Tigers, North Andrew was jumping passes, and Baker hit another triple to knot it up at 26. #20 got behind the Tiger defense and got a three point play to make it 29-26, but then the Tigers settled down as Alex scored in transition and Jaxon Anderson scored off a drive to put Worth County back up 30-29. Jaden Baker scored off a steal, but then Jaxon Anderson got loose inside off an Alex Rinehart drive and Alex scored off a drive off a pass from Jackson Runde to put the Tigers up 34-31 after three.
Worth County was shorthanded, playing without Grant Cameron (UTV wreck) and couldn't afford to get in foul trouble. Their starting five of Alex Rinehart, Jaxon Anderson, Jackson Runde, Jackson Smith, and Aydan Gladstone played the whole game, but didn't get in foul trouble, and it was North Andrew who wore down in the fourth quarter.
North Andrew tied it up again at 36 on a guarded three, but then Alex Rinehart hit back to back jacks and then drove into the teeth of the Cardinal defense and scooped it home to put the Tigers up 44-36. #20 brought the Cardinals back to within 44-40, and they had several fouls to give down the stretch, which meant they could afford to gamble and take risks on defense. Frequently, fourth quarter leads disappear in these situations, but Worth County was steady with the ball despite North Andrew's frantic pressure and started pulling away again.
Jaxon Anderson hit from the right side, Aydan Gladstone scored off a drive, and then Jackson Smith got behind the Cardinal defense to make it double digits at 50-40. North Andrew cut it to 50-42, but then had to start fouling and Worth County finally got in the bonus. Aydan Gladstone made one, missed his second, and then Jaxon Anderson outjumped everyone else to secure an offensive board with 58 seconds. Jackson Runde then went 1 for 2, missed the second, and Anderson again outjumped everyone for the offensive board and then Runde hit two free throws with 56 seconds left to make it 54-42; Worth County was able to score four points without North Andrew touching the ball.
Alex Rinehart had 28 points for the Tigers. Jaxon Anderson had 11, Jackson Runde 7, Aydan Gladstone 5, and Jackson Smith 4. Anderson, going up against a post player who was four inches taller than he was, had a monster night on the boards, getting 13 and added seven steals and took a charge on defense. Aydan Gladstone had 7 assists.

Megan Cassavaugh Takes Charge to Spark Tigers; Worth County Beats Cards for 1st Time Since 2008
Megan Cassavaugh took a charge on defense and then Worth County's girls rallied to get their first win over North Andrew since 2008, when Chris Healy was coaching the Tigers. They pulled away for a 58-37 win, getting 24 points in the fourth quarter as Anna Gladstone went into bezerk mode in the second half, getting 19 out of her 21 points. Regan Allee had 15 and Kaylee McElvain 14 for the Tigers.
The first quarter could not have started off worse for the Tigers. Anna Gladstone and Kristin New picked up their first two fouls in the first three minutes of the game, and then Anna picked up her third a few minutes later. Meanwhile, North Andrew, which had beaten the Tigers twice in close games last year, pulled away to an 11-5 lead early in the second. North Andrew was slashing to the basket at will against Worth County's man to man, but Worth County finally stopped it with their 1-3-1 trapping zone.
But all of a sudden, with Anna on the bench with three fouls, Worth County started getting the ball into Kaylee McElvain at will in the second quarter, as she had 10 of her 15 points as the Tigers erased their deficit and moved ahead to a 19-11 lead. Kristin New picked up her third foul during that stretch, but the Tigers kept coming as Regan Allee dropped a 3-pointer during that stretch.
Long losing streaks have a way of dying hard, and North Andrew scored eight points, including a guarded three, in the last 1:07 of the half to knot it up at 19. Regan Allee hit a couple of threes early in the third, but North Andrew kept hanging around, trailing only 27-25 halfway through the third.
That was when Megan Cassavaugh took a perfect charge against a girl much bigger than her, preventing a game-tying layup. The North Andrew coach protested the call to no avail, and then all of a sudden, Anna Gladstone, who sat out the first four minutes of the third with her foul trouble, went into one of her bezerk modes, starting with drawing a pair of fouls and hitting three out of four at the line to make it 30-25. Then, Jenna Smith jumped a pass after Anna tipped it, and scored, and then Anna scored off a Kristin New steal with 3.6 seconds left, prompting an angry timeout from North Andrew's coach and putting Worth County up 34-25 after three.
But the Cards were in serious foul trouble trying to guard Anna Gladstone in bezerk mode, with the foul differential at 8-2 in Worth County's favor early in the fourth at one point. Merrideth Spiers hit Anna Gladstone inside, Regan Allee hit two free throws, and then Anna Gladstone hit Merrideth Spiers inside to make it 40-26.
Normally, teams try to run the clock with the lead, but Worth County kept right on pulling away, with Anna hitting two free throws, an unguarded Regan Allee hitting a 3-pointer, and then Anna Gladstone getting two straight steals and Jenna Smith one to put Worth County up 51-26. North Andrew made a 9-2 run, getting the deficit down to 53-35, but then Jenna Smith hit Anna Gladstone inside, Regan Allee hit a free throw, and Anna scored off a steal to close the door on the red shirts.
Anna Gladstone had 21 points, Regan Allee 15, Kaylee McElvain 14, Jenna Smith 5, and Merrideth Spiers 3. But Megan Cassavaugh, who didn't score a single point, made the key play that swung the game in Worth County's favor when she took her charge on defense in the third quarter. Worth County outscored the Cards 31-12 after that play.

Kami Gibson’s Free Throws Lift Shamrocks
Kami Gibson’s free throws in the final 48 seconds of the game helped North Harrison hold off North Nodaway Wednesday and secure the 32-28 win, North Harrison’s first of the year. With both teams searching for wins this year, the game was hard-fought; all of the statistics were even. It was free throws that were the difference in the game, with North Harrison making 11 for the night, while North Nodaway made 3 for 14 from the line.
North Harrison got a rare offensive outburst to start the game as Camden Castleberry hit a 3-pointer and added a free throw while Sara Clawson added another to make it 7-0 with 5:18 left in the first.
The game settled into a defensive standoff after that, with North Nodaway chipping away the rest of the quarter. Kandace Damgar hit a 3-pointer and scored off a Jacquelyn Cline steal to cut the deficit to 7-5 before Cline hit an NBA 3-pointer at the start of the second to put North Nodaway in front 8-7.
The game was tied again at 11 before Emma Craig hit a couple of free throws and Ashlynn Gilpatrick hit a 3-pointer to make it 16-11 with 3:22 left. The Shamrocks led 19-13 at the half.
Despite mounting foul trouble for North Nodaway, they fought back to 19-16 when Kandace Damgar hit a 3-pointer. Jayliegh Robins countered with two free throws and Sara Clawson hit a 3-pointer to push it back to 8.
Damgar struck again for North Nodaway, and then Kelsi Barcus converted a 3-point play for the Mustangs to get the deficit down to 24-21 after three.
The defensive standoff continued until the 2:07 mark, when Jacquelyn Cline’s drive cut it to 28-26. North Harrison got a back court violation, but then North Nodaway traveled before they could set up a shot to tie or take the lead. North Harrison ran the clock all the way down to 1:14 before an intentional foul allowed Camden Castleberry to hit a free throw and keep the ball in North Harrison’s hand, up 29-26.
With 52 seconds left, North Harrison threw it away, but North Nodaway turned it right back over. Finally, the Mustangs put Kami Gibson, who had two points all night, on the line. However, Gibson made both free throws to make it two possessions of 31-26 with 48 seconds.
North Harrison played stingy defense, but finally, Ellaina Renfro got a putback with 18 seconds left to cut it to one possession at 31-28.
North Nodaway put Kami Gibson on the line again, but once again, she came through for North Harrison with 14 seconds left, hitting one out of two to make it two possessions at 32-28.
The Mustangs had one last chance as Kandace Damgar drove like she was going for a layup and broke Carly Rinehart’s ankles as she pulled back on a dime to attempt an open three. But the shot was in and out and North Harrison ran out the clock.

Alex Rinehart’s Outburst Lifts Tiger Boys Past NEN
Worth County’s boys used a 13 point outburst from Alex Rinehart in the second quarter to propel themselves past Northeast Nodaway last Tuesday and get the 51-37 win.
Everything started off well for the Bluejays as one of Worth County’s players got a technical for dunking during warmups; Auston Pride hit the free throws, Ben Boswell hit a three from the left wing, and Pride added a drive to put Northeast up 7-2 right off the bat. Jaxon Anderson countered with a traditional three point play, but Nate Schieber got a putback to put the Bluejays up 9-5 with 4:41 left.
But for the rest of the game, Northeast struggled to run their offense. Normally a man to man team, Worth County went to a 2-3 zone for the game, and Northeast struggled to get good looks against it. Meanwhile, Alex Rinehart scored off a steal and Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer off another Rinehart steal to put Worth County up 10-9 after one.
Rinehart scored off a pair of drives to put Worth County up 14-11 at the 5:15 mark. Reed McIntyre, Ben Boswell, and Auston Pride all countered to put the Bluejays back in front 17-14, but then Aydan Gladstone hit Alex Rinehart for an NBA three to knot it up again at 17.
The game was tied up once more at 19, but then Alex scored on a scoop shot to make it 21-19 with 1:18 left. On the ensuing Bluejay possession, one of their players lost their composure after the team turned the ball over and got a technical foul from Referee Aaron Behrens. That swung the momentum in Worth County’s favor, as Rinehart hit the ensuing free throws and Jackson Runde scored two free throws on the subsequent free possession to make it 25-19; Worth County got four points without Northeast Nodaway touching the ball. Runde was fouled with two seconds left and hit two more free throws to make it 27-19 at the half.
The Bluejays managed to stop the bleeding in the third quarter and force Worth County into foul trouble as Jaxon Anderson got his third foul in the period. The blue shirts got the deficit down to 31-27, but then Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to make it seven again going into the fourth.
Aydan Gladstone then drove and spun his way for a basket and Jackson Smith hit a 3-pointer after a Jackson Runde kickout to put Worth County up double digits at 39-27. Lucas Wake hit a shot from the left side after an Aydan Gladstone kickout to make it 41-27.
Ben Boswell’s coast to coast layup with 2:17 left made it 42-31 with 2:17 left, but then Northeast had to start fouling, and Worth County shot 7 for 8 down the stretch as the lead never dropped under double digits.
For Worth County, Alex Rinehart had 15 points. Aydan Gladstone and Jackson Runde 10, Jaxon Anderson 9, Jackson Smith 3, and Grant Cameron and Lucas Wake 2 each.
