Nursing Home Board Seeks Two New Directors

The Worth County Care & Rehab Center is seeking two board members. One is for the East Fletchall Township position; the other is for the Smith Township (Allendale) and North Allen (Denver) area. Previous board members Don Null and Patti Spainhower did not seek reelection this year. Current board members are Scott Houk, Kim Sanders, Jim Larson, and Susan Tucker.

The State Minimum Wage Bill, which was approved by voters last year, will mean an estimated $79,643.00 in increased wage costs for the facility annually by 2023, according to figures provided by Board President Scott Houk. This does not include any across the board raises that the board may vote to give employees. The cost increases include $13,186 in 2020, $18,830 in 2021, $23,452 in 2022, and $24,175 in 2023. For now, the facility will adjust private pay rates to cover the expenses.

The board reorganized at their regular meeting Wednesday. Scott Houk was reelected Board President, while Jim Larson was voted Vice-President by the board.

The facility is running a $43,000 profit for this year, including a $9,691.24 profit in March.
The facility is seeking a new van. The old one, which was obtained 10 years ago, is awkward to drive, especially in windy conditions. Economic Developer Gene Auten is looking into grants.

Administrator Kelly Summa reported that she had talked to Nodaway County Economic Development and that they were still committed to funding the Alzheimer’s Program. When the required security locks are put on the doors and staff training is complete, the facility will begin marketing the program.

Board member Kim Sanders reported that there were people who were dedicating rows to the new Farm to Table Program that the facility offers. She said that she would work on decorating the flower beds for the facility.

The census was at 22 this month; there were two discharges. There is one Part B patient, and ten patients using the Outpatient program.

The facility got a complaint to the state this month. The state came and did an inspection and found that it was unsubstantiated.

The mowing bid for this year went to Kevin Kobbe.

The facility now offers two new services. WoundCare Plus helps monitor wounds by residents. MediTelecare will now provide monthly psychiatric services to residents. Both are covered by insurance, and do not cost the facility.

The facility got an unusually expensive water bill from the city and could not figure out why they were using 190,000 gallons instead of their usual 55,000 gallons of water. They fixed seven leaky toilets. At one point, they thought they had the problem isolated, but it turned out to be an outgoing drain instead of an incoming pipe. Recently, the water usage went back to normal.

The facility received two large donations recently. One was from memorials in memory of the late Venita Jennings, which totaled $275. Jerry Cook donated $1,000 to be used for the Therapy Program.

The facility recently took cards and cookies to area healthcare providers, including in Maryville, Albany, Bethany, Grant City, and Stanberry.
