Luke Cox Named NEN Principal; Board Reorganizes

The Northeast Nodaway School board hired Luke Cox as its new principal following a closed session and subsequent votes. Cox will serve as a principal, along with Jason McDowell. Brenda Dougan will serve as superintendent for the school district. He comes from Clarinda Academy, where he was the Education Director there and had a variety of responsibilities. His wife, Rudy, was a special education teacher at Rock Port. They have two children, Brady and Elijah. The vote was unanimous.

The board offered a teaching contract to Melissa Potter for the 2019-2020 school year. The board hired Kristin Sybert as Parents as Teachers Director. These votes were unanimous.

The board voted to offer contracts to all extra duty coaches as presented. Board member Victor West abstained on the vote to rehire Linda Mattson. Board member Kenny Runde abstained on the vote to rehire Allie Runde. The vote to rehire Joyce Steins as Varsity Girls Basketball Coach was 6-1.

The board voted to rehire all non-certified staff. Board member Kenny Runde abstained on the vote to rehire Allie Runde and Terry Runde, while board member Jeff Redden voted to abstain on the vote to rehire DeAnn Redden. All other votes were unanimous. Rehired were Terry Runde, Casey Schmidt, Melody Adwell, Sue Wilcox, Kim Lager, Marta Giesken, DeAnn Redden, Allie Runde, Tiffany McGinness, Tabi Adwell, Sheila Johnson, and Tyler Schmidt.

Board members for the 2019-2020 term are Kenny Runde, Jeff Redden, Darrin Adwell, Sheldon Scadden, Kenna Florea, Katrina McIntyre, and Victor West. Newly elected was Karl Wilmes, who won a write-in vote during the 2019 election; Kenna Florea was reelected.

The board obtained a quote from Kaw Valley Engineering for $16,400 for design and $2,800 for construction administration for the new baseball field and track. It will be east of where the current field is; the school has already purchased the land. The current field will be used for softball. A special meeting will be held on April 29th at 6 pm for the Track Committee and the School Board to discuss the next step in the construction process.

New officers were named by the board. Kenny Runde was selected as Board President again. Jeff Redden was named Vice-President. Kenna Florea was named Board Secretary. All votes were unanimous.

The board appointed various representatives. Missouri School Board Association delegate is Sheldon Scadden, with Victor West serving as an alternate. Kenna Florea was named to represent the board at the CTA. Karl Wilmes was named to represent the board at the Park Board. Kenny Runde was named to represent the board at the City Council. DeAnn Redden was named Board Treasurer.

The school received two bids for gym floor maintenance. One was from Hillyard for a cost of $2,278.50. The board voted to accept the bid from Meyer Laboratory for a cost of $1,715.10. The board voted to renew MSBA membership. The board received two bids for lawn care. One was from Lyle Lawn Care for $90, while another was from Wiederholt Lawn Care for $115. The board voted to accept the bid from Wiederholt Lawn Care. All three votes were unanimous.

The board voted 5-2 to switch from an eight period day to a seven period day after presentations from Mr. McDowell and Mrs. Groomer.

Enrollment for the high school and junior high is 105, while the elementary is 99. Preschool enrollment is 9. Attendance is 95.71%.

Tiffany McGinness reported for the Northeast Nodaway CTA. Three Northeast Nodaway seniors have been approved for scholarships for $250. Winners will be announced later. A Taco John’s fundraiser was held on April 25th. McGinness also reported for the PTO. They will continue to purchase most of the school supplies for the PK through 6th grades for the 2019-2020 school year. There will be a few items that the PTO will ask parents to help out with.

The gym bleachers were inspected and one section was in need of repair. The work will be completed this summer.
