With Duck Days in Parnell coming up, naturally, we were curious about previous festivals in Parnell. Back in 1922, Parnell had a Chautauqua show that ran five nights in August, from August 24th to 28th. The Parnell Sentinel of August 17th wrote this:
Parnell’s Free Chautauqua opens Thursday of next week. The opening night will be the Philippino Quartette in instrumental and vocal novelties, not a dull moment, songs and melodies from the Orient.
Second night will be Reno in magic and amusement, fun for young and old.
Third night, “The Bubble,” Edward Locke’s appealing play of dialect, humor, and pathos.
Fourth night, “Old Home Singers,” with the songs we all love, special costume effects.
Fifth night, Staples Company original and spectacular. Something new. Artists in crayon and sand. Revel in tales of New Zealand, thrilling and instructive.
As advertised:
THE OLD HOME SINGERS
As the name signifies, these marvelous singers specialize in the grand old songs of mother and home, the romance of love and trial, the sweetest and dearest of all the songs that ever issued from the hearts of mortals.
FOUR GREAT VOCAL ARTISTS
Appearing in the costumes of Colonial times, each designed in beauty and lending their ancient charm to give greater authority to the melodies of singers. The scenes take one back to the days of love and adventure, heroic devotion, and genuine faith in the Divine. The setting is complete. The atmosphere created is natural and satisfying.
A STANDARD ATTRACTION
For many years, these great singers have gone about the land living joy to thousands, and to many communities, the bare announcement of their coming would fill the largest auditorium. They have won as enviable a place in the affections of all music lovers, and will make friends here of all who are so fortunate as to hear them.
