John “Dave” David McGinness passed away at home in Trenton at 6:05 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a fiercely fought battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 75.
A visitation is scheduled from 5 until 7 Monday evening July 7, 2025 at Resthaven Mortuary of Trenton. Open viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. Monday. He is to be cremated following the visitation. Memorial donations are suggested to the Green Hills Animal Shelter and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
Dave was born October 9, 1949 in St. Joseph, MO to John and Freda May (Miller) McGinness. He graduated from Northeast Nodaway in 1967, going on to attend Northwest Missouri State University, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education majoring in mathematics. Dave began working for the Chicago and Northwestern (C&NW) Railroad April 14, 1972. He continued to work for the railroad once they merged with Union Pacific (UP) Railroad, retiring after 42 years on January 1, 2015. Dave was a member of the Trenton Elk’s Lodge 801 for 35 years.
Although married previously, Dave would tell anyone who would listen, that he had finally found the love of his life. Dave and Kathy were married April 1, 2023. Dave was a very loving and caring father of five children, Rachel, Michelle, Megan, Colton and Keegan (Makaila). He is also survived by grandchildren John and Valentin, step children Nathan Applegate (Tabitha) and Brent Applegate (Misty), step grandchildren, Zoie Ann Jordyn, Jasper, ShyAnn and Khloe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Connie Green.
