Recently, Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox hit both an inside the park home run and a grand slam in the same game. He was only the sixth player in baseball history to do so.
The last player to do that was Roger Maris with the Kansas City (now Sacramento) A’s on August 3rd, 1958. He hit an inside the park home run, a grand slam, and also a triple in the A’s 12-0 win over the Washington Senators, who became the Minnesota Twins.
Like the Dave Glass-era Royals, this team served as a minor league franchise to the rest of baseball. Maris, Ralph Terry, Bob Cerv, and Hector Lopez all played for the 1961 Yankee team that ran away with the pennant and World Series that year. Whitey Herzog, who later managed the Royals and Cardinals, also played for the A’s that day.
