The Grant City Council had another special meeting Thursday to discuss the cleanup from the building collapse on the southwest corner of the Square during an 8” rainstorm.
According to the unofficial minutes taken at the meeting, Tyler Steele, proprietor of The Petaler, wanted 12-16 feet of flat surface cleaned up so he has room to repair his building. The council agreed to clean out another 8 feet of debris so Tyler can work.
Steele also expressed concern about other buildings around the Square. City Administrator Lizzie Jeanes explained that the topic of the meeting was to discuss buildings next to his. Mayor Debbie Roach explained that the cost to take down all the buildings that need to be taken down is $1 million that the city can’t afford to pay, but that progress was being made to secure funding. Steele also did not want any debris left in any of the lots where the buildings fell; the council said it wasn’t his call, since the respective property owners of the collapsed buildings still own the property.
