Khloey Sperry Shatters Two Records for Gilman City Girls; Boys Win HDC Title

Khloey Sperry shattered the HDC Conference record in the High Jump and the school record in the 400 in track action Wednesday and Thursday while the boys won the HDC Title.

The girls narrowly missed joining the boys on the boards as they were edged out by Newtown-Harris. Newtown Harris had 152 and Gilman City had 136. There was little competition as East Harrison had 69, Mercer 50, Winston 40, North Daviess 26, and Tri-County 10.

Khloey Sperry showed her versatility as an athlete as she ran in the 100, 200, and 400 Wednesday after running in the 800 as part of the 4x800 relay this year. She was second in the 100 with a time of 14.20. She beat out Kelsey in the 200 with a time of 29.12 to Kelsey’s 30.56. The Hawks were 1-2 in the 400 as Khloey Sperry won  with a time of 1:03.62 while Avery Gregg was second with a time of 1:08.91.

Avery Gregg won the 800 with a time of 2:55.13. Kelsey Sperry was second with a time of 3:02.68. The two are best friends and enjoyed running against each other and didn’t care who won as long as they were 1-2. Avery Gregg won the 1600 with a time of 5:49.26. Shelby Gibson was third with a time of 6:25.67. Avery Gregg was second in the 3200 with a time of 14:18.91. The last athlete we covered who ran the 800, 1600, and 3200 in the same day and placed well was Jacqueline Schulte (NEN) in 2010. Schulte was also versatile enough that she ran the 100 as part of the 4x100 one year.

Kelsey Sperry dominated the hurdle events as she won the 100 Hurdles with a time of 20.04 and the 300 Hurdles with a time of 56.58. Shelby Gibson was fifth in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 23.25 and fourth in the 300 Hurdles with a time of 1:02.98.

Khloey Sperry, who was beaten out by Sloane McClain (East Harrison) in the High Jump at the Worth County Early Bird, flipped the tables and won the event, shattering the HDC record in the process. She jumped to a height of 1.62 meters to McClain’s 1.50.

Shelby Gibson was fourth in the Triple Jump with a jump of 8.47 meters. Colbi Webb was fourth in the Shot Put with a throw of 8.04 meters. Pyper Taggart was sixth with a throw of 7.28 meters. Pyper Taggart was fifth in the Discus with a throw of 21.26 meters. Colbi Webb was sixth with a throw of 13.12. Colbi Webb was fifth in the Javelin with a throw of 24.07 meters.

The boys won the whole thing with Gilman City getting 138 points, edging out Winston with 130. Newtown-Harris had 112, North Daviess 52, East Harrison 28, and Mercer 20.

Camden Griffith showed his versatility on the boys side, winning the 100, 400, and 800. He ran away with the 100 with a time of 11.85. Alex Young was sixth with a time of 14.09. Kenyon Puls was sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.87. Camden ran away with the 400 with a time of 52.84. Kenyon Puls was fourth with a time of 59.94. Griffith had just as little competition in the 800, winning with a time of 2:10.69. Landon Preston was second with a time of 2:20.26. Beau Gibson was second in the 1600 with a time of 5:50.25.

The 4x100 was second with a time of 1:00.46. The 4x200 won with a time of 1:41.48. The 4x400 was second with a time of 6:02.83. The 4x800 was second.

Beau Gibson was second in the Long Jump with a jump of 5.40 meters. Landon Preston ran away with the Triple Jump with a jump of 11.03 meters. The Hawks were 1-2 in the Shot Put with Parker Virtue winning with a throw of 12.51 meters and Jace Estrada second with a throw of 11.70 meters. Jace Estrada was second in the Discus with a throw of 28.21 meters, while Andrew Young was fifth with a throw of 17.39. Parker Virtue was third in the Javelin with a throw of 28.87.

At South Harrison, the host South Harrison won with 154 points. Trenton had 147, Gilman City 74, Maysville 50, Meadville 31, Pattonsburg 31, Mercer 31, Braymer 29, North Harrison 26, OSHS 25, East Harrison 22, Mid-Buchanan 15, and North Daviess 12.

Khloey Sperry showed that her showings at the HDC were no accident as she held her own against athletes from bigger schools. She was second in the 200 with a time of 28.64. She was second in the 400 and shattered the school record with a time of 1:02.99. The Hawks were 1-2 in the 800 with Avery Gregg winning with a time of 2:39.38 and Kelsey Sperry second with a time of 2:41.64. Avery Gregg ran away with the 1600 with a time of 5:59.57. Shelby Gibson was fourth in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 19.97, a big improvement from the day before.

The Hawks ran away with the 4x800 with a time of 10:52.52, almost 15 seconds ahead of the second place team.

Khloey Sperry was second in the High Jump with a height of 1.55 meters; she was edged out by Annabelle Gardner (Pattonsburg), who jumped 1.60. Pyper Taggart was eighth in the Shot Put with a throw of 7.36 meters. Colbi Webb showed rapid improvement in the Javelin as she was third with a throw of 28.43 meters.
