Skyler Florea had a big first half for Northeast Nodaway, who won their third straight game and their fifth out of their last six, dropping North Harrison 53-33 Tuesday, February 11th. The team were headed in opposite directions with Northeast Nodaway finding its stride after going through a stretch where they were varying from week to week, while North Harrison played Albany tough before falling 34-24, only to lay an egg in North Andrew and fall 37-14.
The Bluejays were locked in during pregame warmups, and it carried over to the game, where Florea drew two quick fouls on Jaxcynn Hansel, North Harrison's best rebounder, and sent her to the bench, making three of four from the line in the process. Stella Rinehart, pressed into extended minutes in Hansel's absence, knocked down a shot from the high post to cut it to 3-2; she grabbed three rebounds early and made a lot of hustle plays.
But Florea was on a mission that game and she knocked down an inside shot after getting a pass from her sister Kynder. Ava Rinehart tied it at 5-5 with a 3-pointer, but the Bluejays were feeding Skyler at will, with her knocking down a free throw, and then Blair Nelson dropping one into her for a three point play to make it 9-5. That opened everyone else as Kynder Florea hit a 3-pointer, Hadley DeFreece came away with a transition look after a wild scramble and hit a free throw, and Kynder Florea hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter to make it 16-5 after one.
But with the Shamrocks' backs to the wall, once again, Gracie Young made a hustle play that turned the game around when she got a backdoor pass from Lani Briggs and converted a three point play to start the second quarter, making it 16-8. Hadley DeFreece got a steal and Baylie Busby got it into Skyler Florea again to make it 20-8, but then the Shamrocks started flying to the glass, led by Hali Smith, who had 12. Addison Milligan had one of her best rebounding games, getting 8 for the night. Ava Rinehart converted a three point play after an offensive rebound and Jaxcynn Hansel came back and got another putback to cut it to 20-13. North Harrison switched from a zone to a man to man for the second and third quarters, and Ava Rinehart shut down Baylie Busby during that stretch, holding her to three points.
Skyler Florea scored four straight and Hayley Yost got on the board, but Lani Briggs hit a free throw, missed the second, only for Gracie Young to spark the Shamrocks again with an offensive board. Hali Smith finally converted a fourth chance putback to make it 25-16 before Baylie Busby was fouled at the buzzer and made one of two to make it 26-16 at the half.
The Shamrocks continued to hang around for the third quarter as Lani Briggs started driving into the paint at will. Briggs drove to set up Hali Smith to make it 26-18 before Hayley Yost scored four straight for the Bluejays to make it 30-18. Ava Rinehart hit a pullup and Hali Smith hit Jaxcynn Hansel inside to cut it to 30-22 again. Baylie Busby finally got loose for two and Hadley DeFreece hit from the right side to make it 34-22, only for Lani Briggs, the littlest player on the floor, to drop one over Hayley Yost and then add a free throw to make it 34-25. Kynder Florea knocked one down from the high post to make it 36-25 for the Bluejays going into the fourth.
But the constant ball pressure from the Bluejays tends to wear down teams, and sure enough, they started pulling away from the Shamrocks in the fourth. They had 34 tips, led by Baylie Busby with 18, and 25 steals for the night. Busby started taking over after Hadley DeFreece got a steal and set her up to start the fourth. Ava Rinehart picked up her fourth foul and Busby started taking full advantage, starting with a play where she drove around a Skyler Florea screen near half court all the way to the rim to make it 40-25.
Ava Rinehart's 3-pointer cut it to 40-28 after Addison Milligan kept a possession alive with an offensive board, but Blair Nelson got a putback, Hayley Yost ran the floor and cleaned up after a miss in transition, and Blair Nelson got a steal and fed Busby to make it 45-28. Rinehart hit another 3-pointer to make it 45-31, but Blair Nelson drove, faked out Rinehart, and knocked one down from the high post. Hayley Yost cut inside and got a pass from Busby, and Busby drove and drew a foul, hitting two free throws to give NEN its biggest lead at 51-31.
