Kristen Tracy gets 18 Points, 17 Boards; Tigers Hang On Against Wolverines

Kristen Tracy had a big night against Maysville, but Worth County had to hang on to beat the Wolverines 35-28 Thursday night.

It looked like the Tigers could do no wrong at first. Audrey Runde hit Kristen Tracy inside for two. Kambree Briner scored off a Kristen Tracy steal, and then Runde hit a free throw. Keira Hardy hit Kristen Tracy inside, Runde got a steal and drive, and then Kristen Tracy hit Keira Hardy on the baseline for two to make it 11-0 after one. Worth County was locking down the Wolverines and keeping the ball out of the paint.

Harley Sweiger got Maysville on the board, but Worth County kept pulling away as Audrey Runde's 3-pointer made it 16-2. Tegan Clark's baseline shot cut it to 11-6, but Kristen Tracy's third chance putback made it 21-6 at the 1:37 mark of the first half.

The Tigers kept a 15 point lead at the half at 24-9, but then Worth County started playing like they were down 15 instead of up 15 for most of the second half. They were hacking and fouling on defense, getting to four fouls just over a minute into the third, putting Maysville in the bonus the rest of the period. They were forcing passes, and the turnover margin, which was big in their favor, evened out. The hangover from not having played for 10 days caught up to them as Maysville started chipping away.

Ashlyn Klippenstein was running wild in the post and sealing at will and getting to the line and the Tiger lead slowly shrunk, getting down to 24-15 by the 5:41 mark of the third quarter. Maysville, hungry for a win, was swarming and pressing, smelling blood in the water. Audrey Runde found Kristen Tracy in transition and then added a 3-pointer to stop the bleeding and put the Tigers back up 29-15, and Tracy's putback kept it at 31-18 after three.

But then the 10 day hangover came back, and Maysville started coming back again, with baskets from Klippenstein and Sweiger cutting it to 31-22 again. Worth County finally tightened up on defense and the score was stuck at 31-22 for the next four minutes until Kristen Tracy scored to make it 33-22. But then Klippenstein scored three straight to make it interesting again at 33-25 with 55 seconds left, still plenty of time.

Tracy scored again as Maysville overextended itself on the press, but missed free throws kept it interesting, with Klippenstein's free throw making it 35-28 with 9.8 seconds left before Worth County was finally able to run out the clock.
