Owen Martin had 14 points as the North Nodaway boys broke a four game losing skid Tuesday, February 11th as they beat Union Star 47-13. They won their sixth game of the year. Union Star hit a high note with their second win of the year over NEN, but came back down to earth with a 72-25 loss to OSHS.
The score did not reflect the intensity of the game; there were times when bodies were frantically flying on the floor as both teams were desperate for a rare win. But the difference was North Nodaway’s ability to take Union Star out of its offensive rhythm; the Mustangs mixed up their man, their zone, and their trapping zone and created all sorts of havoc and uncertainty and sped the Trojans up, forcing them into rushed passes and shots. The difference showed up in the assist column, where North Nodaway had 15 assists for the night while Union Star only had 5.
A Kaeden Nave drive set up Jordan DeLeon for the first points of the game. Mason Casner drove with his left and scored after getting a pass from Owen Martin. Wyatt Jackson took a charge on defense for Union Star, but North Nodaway kept attacking the rim and Owen Martin drove and scored to make it 6-0. Owen Martin hit Blaine Clements in transition and Mason Casner hit Owen Martin for three to make it 11-0 before Aaron Pettijohn’s putback made it 11-2 after one.
Owen Martin picked up a steal, fed Kaeden Nave, who fed Mason Casner for a three point play to start the second quarter. Owen Martin crossed over and scored, and then Mason got a steal and another three point play. Kaeden Nave hit Owen Martin in transition, then Owen Martin got a steal, got it to Nave, who threw a behind the back pass to Blaine Clements for a finish. Ridge Clements drove off a Jordan DeLeon screen to cap the run and put North Nodaway up 25-2.
Lake Klawuhn and Aaron Pettijohn got loose in transition to cut it to 25-6, but Mason Casner’s drive with a left hand left North Nodaway up 27-6 at the break.
Jordan DeLeon had the hot hand for North Nodaway in the third quarter, getting five as the Mustangs led by as much as 44-6 before the Trojans came back. Shea Simerly got behind the defense for two and Wyatt Jackson hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 34-11 and Simerly took a charge on defense. The Trojans went full court denial and nearly got a steal with half a second left, but the basket was wiped out.
North Nodaway went back to its trapping zone and Blaine Clements was feeding Mustangs at will in the fourth quarter. He fed Jordan DeLeon twice, Mason Casner on a cut, and Owen Martin for three as the Mustangs led 47-13 before subbing freely for the last 2:30.
Owen Martin had 14 points. Mason Casner had 12, Jordan DeLeon 11, Blaine Clements 8, and Ridge Clements 2.
Blaine Clements and Jordan DeLeon had 1 block.
Blaine Clements had 10 boards. Owen Martin had 6, Jordan DeLeon 5, Blaine Clements 4, Kaeden Nave 2, and Aiden James, Ridge Clements, and Draven Rowland 1 each.
Blaine Clements had 4 assists, as did Kaeden Nave. Owen Martin and Mason Casner had 3 and Ridge Clements 1.
Owen Martin had 8 tips. Ridge Clements had 4, Mason Casner 3, Jordan DeLeon and Kaeden Nave had 2, and Blaine Clements 1.
Kaeden Nave and Owen Martin had 5 steals. Mason Casner had 3 and Blaine Clements and Jordan DeLeon had 1.
