Karson Briner had a big night for Worth County with 15 points and 11 boards, and Cole Ruby led the scoring for the Tigers with 16, but the Tigers couldn't keep up with the high-octane St. Joseph Christian squad, falling to them 62-50 Friday at Courtwarming. The Lions have been up and down all year; they are now 10-2 when they score 60 or more points in a game and 3-7 when they don't. Worth County gave up too many transition looks and 3-pointers in an otherwise evenly-played game. They have been playing up to different teams' levels all year and have been playing down to them; they have beaten Rock Port and hung with the Lions for much of the game Friday; they have also lost twice to Pattonsburg, with four wins on the season.
They are still trying to get Hayden Sanders and Caleb New healthy; Sanders, after shutting it down after the midpoint of the third quarter, came off the bench Friday and got better as the game progressed, hitting a key 3-pointer and taking a charge on defense. Caleb New pushed through his stress fracture and got 9 points for the night.
Worth County got off to a hot start as Karson Briner scored twice inside, Cole Ruby got a three point play off a drive, and Caleb New hit a 3-pointer that made it 10-6. But then Johnson Stewart hit a guarded three that sparked a Lion run that put them up for good at 15-10 before Cole Ruby scored off a drive to cut it to 15-12 after one.
Karson Briner hit a free throw and Caleb New hit a 3-pointer to cut the Tiger deficit to 16-12 before Nick Orscheln went coast to coast to spark another Lion run. Orscheln hit a 3-pointer, one of eight for the Lions for the night. Hayden Sanders took a charge on defense, but then Stewart got a steal and fed Caedmon Carlson to make it 24-16. Cannon Fletcher hit a 3-pointer, but Johnson Stewart countered with one of his own to put the Lions up 27-19 at the half.
The second half started off well for the Tigers as Karson Briner scored four straight to cut it to 27-23, but then Christian pushed it up the floor after Briner's second make and found Stewart to make it 30-23. Cole Ruby countered with a 3-pointer, but then Stewart scored off a drive, as did Nick Orscheln to make it 34-26. Karson Briner cut it to 36-30, but then Hayden Riley scored from three, Cy Carlson scored off a drive, and then Johnson Stewart hit a guarded three to make it 44-30. The Lion lead grew to as big as 50-34 as Cy Carlson had the hot hand during that stretch.
Worth County began its comeback bid as Briner got loose inside and Cole Ruby got loose in transition to cut it to 50-38. Logan Hubble hit a free throw, but Cole Ruby scored off a drive to make it 51-40. Karson Briner fouled out, but Worth County kept coming, finally getting it under double digits when Caleb New hit his third 3-pointer of the game to make it 54-45 with 3:16 left. Caleb New got a hand on an offensive board and tipped it out to Hayden Sanders, who hit his only points of the game, a 3-pointer that cut it to 56-48 with 2:08 left.
But after Worth County couldn't convert a chance to cut it to two possessions, they had to start fouling and Hubble and Johnson connected from the line and Johnson added a driving layup as the Lions stretched it out to 12 at the end.
