Camden Griffith Goes Beast Mode in Hawks Win; Wyatt Maize Scores 22 for Shamrocks

Camden Griffith went beast mode for Gilman City with 28 points and 17 boards while Landon Preston nearly got a triple double in the Hawks’ 66-50 win over North Harrison in the Gilman City Tournament semifinals Thursday. Wyatt Maize did all he could for North Harrison, getting 22 points for the Shamrocks.

The game started off as a scoring duel between Griffith and Maize as well as an assist duel between Maize and Landon Preston. But as the game progressed, the Hawks crashed the boards relentlessly, getting 52 boards to just 30 for the Shamrocks. The pressure took its toll in the end as the Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Both teams started off trying to run each other out of the gym. First, Jace Estrada scored a free throw; then, Bo Eads scored from inside and Kenyon Puls went backdoor and got a pass from Landon Preston to make it 5-0. Jensen Davis got North Harrison on the board, but Bo Eads got loose in transition, and then Camden Griffith got loose as well to make it 9-2.

North Harrison hung around for the rest of the second quarter, but then Landon Preston and Jace Estrada got in on the scoring act and Gilman City was able to raise their lead to 35-30 at the half.

Kenyon Puls went backdoor to put the Hawks up seven to start the third, but the Shamrocks fought back again, this time with  a free throw from Fortner, two from Jensen Davis, and Evan Schreiber banking one high off the glass and in over a Hawk defender to cut it to 39-37. Landon Preston shot the Hawks in front 43-37 with a 3-pointer, but the Shamrocks came back again as Andrew Craig got a putback, Wyatt Maize hit a 3-pointer from the left wing after Evan Schreiber got an offensive board, and Gage Fortner got loose behind the Hawk defense to cut it to 43-41 at the 2:45 mark. But then Puls got loose in transition and then the rebounding started to take its toll as Camden Griffith got a third chance putback to put the Hawks in front 49-43 at the end of three.

Owan Roberson picked up his fourth foul for the Shamrocks early in the fourth, which was all the opening the Hawks needed to pull away.  Parker Virtue bulldozed his way between two Shamrock defenders and drew a foul and hit a free throw to make it 50-43. Andrew Craig countered to make it 50-45, but then Jace Estrada’s fourth chance putback, a drive from Kenyon Puls, and another putback from Camden Griffith put the Hawks up 56-45 with 3:50 left.

Roberson came back in and the Shamrocks kept it at 10 for a minute, but then Bo Eads and Camden Griffith got the hot hand down the stretch to pull away to a 66-48 lead.
