Bluejay Girls Beat Mound City Behind Mattson’s 25

This was supposed to be Northeast Nodaway’s hell week, the week in which they have to play powerhouses Mound City and Jefferson back to back. But someone forgot to tell Madelynn Mattson, who had a career night with 25 points Tuesday. The Bluejays needed every single one of them as they held off Mound City 39-38. At the Stanberry Tournament, Worth County figured out they could get the ball into post player Jessi Badell, who had a season-high 14 against the Panthers. NEN followed their lead and fed Madelynn early and often as they built up a 19-12 halftime lead.

Mound City, behind the hot hand of Paige Quilty, fought back, getting the deficit down to two after three at 26-24. The Panthers finally tied it up at 34 midway through the fourth. But Northeast found their second wind, relying on Mattson and some timely free throw shooting to take a 39-35 lead late. Mound City hit a meaningless 30-footer at the end for the final score.

For the Bluejays, Mattson had 25, Blair Stoll 6, Makayla Adwell 3, Paige West 3, and Anne Schieber 2. The Bluejays were 12 of 17 from the line.
