Blair Stoll Has 8 Assists; Balanced Scoring Leads NEN Girls Past Stewartsville

Blair Stoll found the open person at will Tuesday night, getting eight assists, and Northeast Nodaway's girls used a balanced attack to get a running clock win, 50-19 over Stewartsville as they have won four out of their last five since losing to Mercer at South Harrison. They are now up to 11-7 for the year and have a chance to close out their second straight winning season. Stewartsville has had a pair of impressive wins, a 58-54 win over East Harrison earlier in the year and a 47-23 win over Gilman City. They started off the year like they were going to be greatly improved, giving North Nodaway everything they could handle in the first quarter before one of their best interior defenders blew her knee out and the Cardinals headed south, falling to the Mustangs 41-11.

Northeast Nodaway took a big lead after one, fended off Stewartsville's attempts to rally in the second before finishing strong, and put on the clamps defensively in the third as they got it to running clock territory by the fourth quarter. The Bluejays continued to show improvement in taking care of the ball; after not turning it over at all for the first 12 minutes of the second half or giving up a single offensive glass to Albany, they didn't turn it over at all for the first 14 minutes of Tuesday's game despite full court man to man pressure from Stewartsville, only had three turnovers after three quarters, and six for the game. They also continued their improvement on the boards from the Albany game; they only gave up four offensive boards against Stewartsville Tuesday.

While they turned over the ball over six times against Stewartsville, they stole the ball 22 times, led by Paige West with 6, which translated into around a ridiculous 30-6 turnover margin in NEN's favor.

The Bluejays were reeling at the end of December, dropping some games they felt they should have won; however, they righted the ship in January with balanced scoring and making everyone a threat to score. They got five players scoring between seven and 11 points; Madelynn Mattson scored 11 despite going up against freshman six-footer Maddison Lundy, a strong defensive post player. Makayla Adwell and Paige West bot had 10, Blair Stoll 8, and Anne Scheiber 7. Gerry Runde and Angela Standiford had 2 each to round out the scoring.

Paige West hit Blair Stoll on the left wing to start the scoring, and Stoll got the first of eight by finding a cutting Paige West backdoor to make it 4-0. Makayla Adwell got loose in transition after Blair Stoll got it to her, and Madelynn Mattson hit a cutting Paige West, who got on the line and hit a free throw to make it 7-0. West missed the second free throw, but in an echo of the Albany game, in which NEN used an offensive board to score five points without losing possession of the ball, West kept the possession alive after the ball was batted around. That led to Makayla Adwell hitting a cutting Gerry Runde to make it 9-0. Makayla Adwell hit Blair Stoll for three, and then Blair Stoll hit Madelynn Mattson in the high post to make it 14-0 at the 3:41 mark.

Kelsi Caraway tried to get Stewartsville back in it by scoring off a drive and hitting from the left wing to make it 14-4. Makayla Adwell picked up her second foul, and then Reagan Robinson hit one in the corner to make it 14-6. But then Anne Scheiber hit Blair Stoll on the left wing for three and Paige West scored off a steal to make it 19-6 with 12 seconds left. Caraway raced down the court and hit a layup at the buzzer to make it 19-8.

Makayla Adwell got the hot hand early for NEN in the second, scoring six straight to raise the lead to 25-8. Northeast made a concerted effort to get it into Madelynn Mattson in the frame, but she missed a ton of shots trying to get it over Lundy, and Stewartsville started chipping away as Caraway's drive made it 26-14 with 1:10 left. But then Mattson got untracked as Stoll skipped one to her for a three-point play with 16 seconds left in the half. Makayla Adwell got a steal and then Blair Stoll got it to Mattson again at the buzzer to put Northeast Nodaway back in control up 31-14.

Mattson continued to have the hot hand early in the third quarter as Paige West got a steal, got it to Gerry Runde, who hit a driving Mattson for two. Blair Stoll lobbed one to Mattson and West added a putback to make it 37-14. The Bluejays got cold again and Stewartsville got on the line to close to within 37-17, but Madelynn Mattson hit Paige West backdoor, and then Annie Schieber got the hot hand, hitting one from the high post. Then, Alba Vozmediario pushed one ahead after getting a defensive board, got it to Blair Stoll, who hit Schieber on the right wing for three at the buzzer to make it 44-17.

Blair Stoll got a kickout to Anne Scheiber on the left wing just inside the three point line, Angela Standiford, who had some quality minutes again after coming back from a shoulder injury, got a tip and steal and hit two free throws, and Madelynn Mattson hit a cutting Makayla Adwell to give Northeast its biggest lead of the night at 50-17.

NEN, which had struggled on the boards earlier this season, had much more balanced rebounding Tuesday; they had nine different players get boards and six players get three or more. By contrast, they had three players get all but three of their boards in the Nodaway-Holt loss earlier in the season. Paige West had 7 boards for the Bluejays. Anne Schieber and Madelynn Mattson had 4 each, Blair Stoll, Gerry Runde, and Alba Vozmediario had 3, while Angela Standiford, Tierney Privett, and Makayla Adwell had 1.

Blair Stoll had 8 assists for the Bluejays. Madelynn Mattson had 4, Makayla Adwell, Gerry Runde, and Anne Schieber had 3, and Paige West had 1.

Paige West had 4 tips for the Bluejays. Anne Schieber had 3, Angela Standiford 2, and Gerry Runde, Madelynn Mattson, Alba Vozmediario, and Ilenia Ricci had 1.

Paige West had 6 steals. Alba Vozmediario had 4, Blair Stoll, Angela Standiford, and Makayla Adwell had 3 each, while Gerry Runde, Madelynn Mattson, and Ilenia Ricci had 1.
