Tiger Girls Clinch Share of GRC West Title

Anna Gladstone scored her third straight 20+ point game and Worth County beat Pattonsburg 68-45 to clinch a three way share of the GRC West Title along with North Andrew and Stanberry. Kaylee McElvain rode her newfound 3-point shooting ability to 15 points, and everybody else chipped in as the Tigers got their first title since 2003, ending a 16 year drought.

Pattonsburg came in greatly improved from last year, with the ability to score point against almost everyone. They scored 31 in a quarter against King City and nearly wiped out a 19 point fourth quarter deficit before losing 70-68, and have scored 40 or more points in all but four of their games behind the play of Webby Bailey, who did all she could against Worth County.

But like she did in the Albany and King City games, Anna Gladstone carried the team on her back, scoring nine out of Worth County's first 12 points as they were beating Pattonsburg up and down the floor. Jessi Badell got a steal and Reagan Allee threw one to Gladstone for a finish. Pattonsburg lobbed into Grace Warner inside, but Anna Gladstone hit Kaylee McElvain from the top of the key for three, Anna Gladstone got a tip and Jessi Badell got a steal and threw it to Anna for the finish, and then Regan Allee got a block and Kaylee McElvain, who nearly got a double double, grabbed the carom and threw to Anna to make it 12-4.

Gladstone then picked up her first two fouls in succession and sat down. Kristin New hit from the right wing off a pass from Badell, but then Pattonsburg started chipping away, getting a putback from Kadence Johnson and free throws from Bailey to make it 14-8. Bailey threw up a prayer at the first quarter buzzer that went in to make it 18-13.

Anna Gladstone came back in and once again carried the team on her back, and didn't pick up her third foul. She blew by three green shirts like they weren't even there to start the scoring, prompting Pattonsburg to start chucking up threes instead of running their plays. That backfired as Worth County simply grabbed the defensive boards and started beating them up and down the floor. Jessi Badell then aired one out to Anna Gladstone, Kaylee McElvain added a free throw, and Kristin New aired out a defensive board to Gladstone to make it double digits again at 25-13, prompting a Pattonsburg timeout.

The Panthers settled down and started going to the rim instead of chucking up threes, but Worth County continued to pull away. Bailey's free throw cut it to 25-14, but Regan Allee scored off a drive after Anna Gladstone kicked one out to her, and Anna Gladstone got a steal and fed Kaylee McElvain, who missed her layup try, but got her own rebound and put it back in to make it 29-14. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way, and Worth County led 37-21 at the half.

Pattonsburg tried a zone to start the second half, but Regan Allee got it into Jessi Badell to start the scoring and Kaylee McElvain added a three-pointer to make it 19 at 42-23. Allee got her fourth foul, and Kadence Johnson's free throws cut it to 42-25, but then Haley Hunt came off the bench and played some of her best basketball so far this year while everyone else chipped in. Badell hit a free throw after an offensive board, Kaylee McElvain scored off a baseline drive, Badell added two more free throws, and Worth County went over the 20 point barrier at 47-25. Bailey cut it to 47-27 for Pattonsburg, but then Kaylee McElvain hit from the left wing off a kickout from Anna Gladstone, Jill Hardy drove down the right side, and then Haley Hunt scored six straight to give Worth County its biggest lead of the night at 57-27 with 1:24 left in the third. Pattonsburg got no closer than 20 the rest of the way.
