Madelynn Mattson Scores 24, Makayla Adwell Scores Season High

Northeast Nodaway rolled to victory over East Harrison 52-34, as they fought back from losing five out of six to win their last two games to go up to 8-5 on the year. It was in the first game of the South Harrison Tournament Monday. East Harrison had every right to expect a close game, but they remain stuck on one win this year after having won 17 last year with nearly the same team. The Bobcats hoped to get things turned around at the start of the year, but there was no rest for the weary, as they fell to Gabby Newman and the Warriors by 19 and the inhospitable South Nodaway gym by 16.

For the Bluejays, they were able to turn things around in their last two games by diversifying their offense. Blair Stoll hit four three-pointers in their 63-37 win over West Nodaway, and Paige West learned to shoot a 3-pointer and hit two Monday against East Harrison. That opened things up for Madelynn Mattson, who matched a career high with 24 Monday. Makayla Adwell played her best game of the year, getting 17, including a strong second half.

Lauren Waddle scored to start off for East Harrison, but Paige West showed her newfound 3-point shooting ability out of an inbounds play and Madelynn Mattson scored from inside to make it 5-2 Northeast. Free throws from Waddle and Hope Ellsworth knotted it up at 5-5, but then Blair Stoll hit a three from the top of the key, Makayla scored off a drive when a defender slipped and fell, and Madelynn Mattson stripped an outlet pass and scored to make it 13-5 before Waddle cut it to 13-7.

Mattson scored from inside and hit two free throws and Makayla Adwell scored off a steal to make it 19-7, but as usual, East Harrison kept hanging around, getting their deficit down to 23-15 at the half as Waddle continued to have the hot hand for the Bobcats.

East Harrison continued to hang around to start the third, but when their best interior defender, Hope Ellsworth, picked up her third foul and sat with her team trailing 30-19, Madelynn Mattson erupted for eight of her ten points in the period. Natayla Selby scored off a drive to make it 33-21, but then Paige West took a charge on her to further sap the energy out of East Harrison as the Bluejays pulled away to a 40-21 lead after three. Adwell’s transition layup with 6:53 gave NEN its biggest lead of 42-21, and East Harrison never got closer than 15.
