Northwest Student Killed When Vehicle Smashes Tavern

The Maryville Department of Safety says that on January 7th at approximately 12:40 am, Maryville DPS received a 911 call to 422 North Buchanan Street for an injury accident. Upon arrival officers determined a motor vehicle struck the front of the Palms, causing injuries to a female patron inside the building. The female patron was transported to St. Francis Hospital by Nodaway County Ambulance where she succumbed to her injuries. The victim was identified as Morgan McCoy, age 19, of Liberty, Missouri. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene. An investigation is being conducted by Maryville DPS and the Missouri State Patrol to determine the cause of the crash. Maryville Fire and Rescue, Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department, and the University Police Department assisted at the scene.

On Sunday evening, the Maryville Daily Forum reported that Alex Catterson (21) of Maryville was charged with Class C Felony Involuntary Manslaughter. The Forum says that he tested .207 on the breathalyzer test, which is over 2 1/2 times the legal limit. He faces 3-10 years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine, or both.
