Courthouse News for February 28th

On Friday, February 23rd, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Kevin Hernandez (21) of St. Joseph in Nodaway County on a St. Joseph Police Department warrant for a traffic violation. He was held at the Nodaway County Jail.

On Friday, the Patrol arrested a Cainsville man, Dustin Stone (20) of Cainsville for Felony Possession of Marijuana, Failure to Display Valid Plates, No Driver’s License, and No Seat Belt. He was taken to the Harrison County Law Enforcement Center. The Patrol also arrested Brett Cruickshank (34) of Cainsville for Felony Possession of Marijuana and No Seat Belt.

On Saturday, the Patrol arrested Jeffrey Lovins (36) of Bethany in Harrison County on a Daviess County Warrant for Failure to Appear on charges of Driving Without a Valid License. He was also charged with Operating a Vehicle Without a Valid License.

On Saturday, the Patrol arrested a Blythedale man, Jacob Thomsen (27) in Daviess County on charges of DWI, speeding, and No Valid Operator’s License.

Information was taken off the Missouri State Highway Patrol website. The above charges are mere accusations and not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence.

Grant City Woman Injured in Savannah Wreck

A Grant City woman was injured in a wreck near Savannah on Route 59 Monday at around 11:04 am. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2002 Ford Ranger driven by Sandra Patterson (61) of Grant City was southbound on 59 when she traveled off the right side of the roadway, returned to the roadway, and traveled off the left side. The vehicle struck an embankment and came to rest on its wheels facing northwest. Patterson received minor injuries and was taken to Mosaic Life Care. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

McFall Man Killed in Farming Accident

A McFall man was killed in a farming accident Monday at around 10:30 am. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports Victor Morgan (64) of McFall was loading a hay bale onto a McCormick 560 Tractor on private property off Route 69 one mile north of Pattonsburg. The Patrol says excessive weight on the front caused the tractor to tip and roll down an embankment and come to rest on the driver.

Eagleville Woman Injured in Wreck on Icy Roads

An Eagleville woman was injured in a wreck on ice covered roads Saturday morning at around 7:40. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Dynelle Hendricks (27) of Eagleville was northbound on Route T three miles north of Blythdale when she lost control on the ice covered roadway, traveled off the east side of the road, and returned to the roadway. It then ran off the west side of the road and struck a fence. She received minor injuries and was taken to Harrison Community Hospital. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Illinois Man Injured in Wreck Near Eagleville

An Illinois man was injured in a one car accident between Bethany and Eagleville Tuesday morning. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2017 Infinity driven by Darius Sturdivant (23) of South Holland (IL) was northbound on I-35 at the 96 mile marker four miles north of Bethany when it went off the east side, overcorrected, came back on the roadway, overcorrected again, went down an embankment, struck a ditch, and overturned.

A passenger, Edward Duie (23), of Dolton (IL), received moderate injuries and was taken to Harrison County Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Sturdivant was not injured; he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Man Injured After Car Strikes Farm Animal Near Eagleville

A Ridgeway man received moderate injuries after the car he was driving struck a farm animal near Eagleville Friday at around 5:13 pm. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 1999 Chevy Tahoe driven by George Craig (81) of Ridgeway was southbound on 69 ¼ of a mile south of Eagleville when he struck a farm animal that was in the roadway. After impact, the vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway and through a fence. It came to rest on its wheels facing west. Craig received moderate injuries and was taken to Cameron Regional Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Accident Results in Man Being Lifeflighted

An accident Tuesday evening February 13th resulted in a Clarinda man being lifeflighted. The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am driven by James Drake (21) of Blockton was southbound on Route H seven miles south of Darlington at around 9:20 pm. The Pontiac failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the east side of the roadway, struck a DOT sign, traveled down an embankment, struck several trees, and came to rest on its passenger side facing southeast. A passenger, Nicholas Nelson (20) of Clarinda received serious injuries and was lifeflighted to KU Medical Center. Drake was not injured in the accident. Neither was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Courthouse News for February 7th, 2018

On January 23rd, Prosecuting Attorney Brett Hurst filed charges alleging that Lacie Groom (29) of Albany committed DWI in Worth County on November 23rd, 2017. She was arrested at the time by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

On January 25th, Prosecutor Hurst filed charges alleging that on January 24th, Jackie Tinkle committed Unlawful Use of a Weapon by shooting from a motor vehicle at another person, a Class B Felony. Judge Joel Miller set the bond at $25,000. He was arrested by the Worth County Sheriff’s Department.

Charges listed are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

On January 29th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Dylan Rucker (17) of Ridgeway in Harrison County on charges of speeding 101 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone.

On January 30th, the Patrol arrested James Harris (54) of Cainsville on charges of Driving While Suspended and speeding.

On January 30th, the Patrol arrested Kalvin Leuang (21) of Overland Park (KS) on a felony out of state warrant from Johnson County (KS).

On January 31st, the Patrol arrested Ishmail Hawkins (24) of Eden Prairie (MN) on charges of operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and speeding 111 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone.

On February 3rd, the Patrol arrested Trace Clingingsmith (17) of Princeton in Harrison County on a charge of Driving While Intoxicated.

On February 3rd, the Patrol arrested Daniel Everett (49) of Anoka (MN) in Harrison County on charges of Driving While Suspended/Revoked and speeding.

On February 3rd, the Patrol arrested Amanda Chipps (30) of Worth in Worth County on a Gower (MO) warrant for speeding along with no seat belt.

On February 5th, the Patrol arrested Chad Cope (47) of Lathrop in Harrison County on charges of speeding, Driving While Suspended, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Ice Covered Roadway Causes Teen Wreck

Two Milan teens were injured in a wreck caused by ice Sunday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2009 Honda Civil driven by Mauricio Curiel (19) of Milan was westbound on Route 136 five miles west of Albany at around 8:05 am. The Patrol says that Curiel was attempting to pass another vehicle and began to slide on the ice covered roadway. He traveled off the north side of the roadway, down an embankment, and struck a ditch. The vehicle came to rest off the north side of the roadway on its wheels, facing west. Curiel and another passenger, Jonathan Coronado (19), received minor injuries in the accident. They were both wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Northwest Student Killed When Vehicle Smashes Tavern

The Maryville Department of Safety says that on January 7th at approximately 12:40 am, Maryville DPS received a 911 call to 422 North Buchanan Street for an injury accident. Upon arrival officers determined a motor vehicle struck the front of the Palms, causing injuries to a female patron inside the building. The female patron was transported to St. Francis Hospital by Nodaway County Ambulance where she succumbed to her injuries. The victim was identified as Morgan McCoy, age 19, of Liberty, Missouri. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene. An investigation is being conducted by Maryville DPS and the Missouri State Patrol to determine the cause of the crash. Maryville Fire and Rescue, Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department, and the University Police Department assisted at the scene.

On Sunday evening, the Maryville Daily Forum reported that Alex Catterson (21) of Maryville was charged with Class C Felony Involuntary Manslaughter. The Forum says that he tested .207 on the breathalyzer test, which is over 2 1/2 times the legal limit. He faces 3-10 years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine, or both.

Wreck Knocks Out Power

A wreck between Ravenwood and Parnell knocked out power for 3½ hours Friday night and Saturday morning. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2013 Ford F-150 driven by James Meek (54) of Blockton was eastbound on 46 three miles north of Ravenwood at around 10:30 pm when he failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking a utility pole. The pole fell and power lines were in the roadway, forcing the closure of 46 until electrical crews could arrive. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels on the left side of the roadway.

Meek received moderate injuries and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He was taken to SSM St. Francis by Nodaway County EMS. The Ravenwood and Parnell Fire Departments were directing traffic and rerouting it. Power was knocked out as far east as Denver.

Two Thieves Arrested After Stealing Two Vehicles

Two thieves were arrested after stealing a car belonging to Jud Summers of Grant City. The thieves came in a pickup to Summers’ shop and one jumped in his car and drove north on Old 169. However, they failed to negotiate the curve north of the old Livestock Exchange building where the road turns east to meet 169 and they both wrecked.

A passerby, Glenn Hughes, saw the wreck and stopped to offer help. However, the thieves ran off north. They were subsequently seen on Donna Lynch’s property and Chris Cadle’s property north of Grant City. The Wool Shop locked down and all the employees there locked their car doors and secured their belongings. The Courthouse remained open, while the school, which has security doors, operated as normal.

The thieves crossed 169 where it meets PP and F and stole a truck belonging to Bill Wimer which was parked on Rich Wolff’s property on the old airstrip near Irena. They subsequently wrecked again near David Seat’s farm and were arrested.

The Missouri Highway Patrol arrested Alexis Adams (18) of St. Joseph and charged her with Tampering with a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Marijuana, and a St. Joseph warrant for Disorderly Conduct. She was taken to Ringgold County Jail on a 24 hour hold.

The Patrol also arrested Jeffery Jones (32) of Albany on charges of Tampering with a Motor Vehicle, Resisting Arrest by Fleeting, Felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Careless and Imprudent Driving. He was taken to the Ringgold County Jail on a 24 hour hold.

On Wednesday, November 29th, Worth County Prosecutor Brett Hurst filed charges against Adams for Tampering with a Motor Vehicle, Resisting/Interfering With a Felony Arrest, First Degree Property Damage, Possession of Less than 10 Grams of Marijuana (Prior Offense), and Failure to Appear.

Two Injured in Accident at 169 and 46

There was an accident at the intersection of 169 and 46 Friday morning in Grant City. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2006 Chevy Truck driven by Jason Fitzgerald (38) of Lenox was eastbound, stopped at the stop sign on 46, while a 2010 Ford Taurus driven by Jillian Donovan (30) of Darlington was southbound on 169. The Patrol says Fitzgerald failed to observe the Taurus approaching the intersection and pulled into the path of the Taurus. The Taurus struck the Pickup on the front driver’s side. The Pickup began to rotate and slid across the roadway, coming to rest on its wheels in the northbound lane of 169. The Taurus crossed the center of the roadway and traveled off the left side of 169, coming to rest on its wheels off the left side of the roadway.

Fitzgerald received moderate injuries and was taken to Mount Ayr Hospital by Worth County EMS. He was not wearing a seat belt. Donovan received moderate injuries and was taken to Northwest Medical Center. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Maryville Man Lifeflighted Following Wreck North of Sheridan

Three people were injured and one was lifeflighted in a wreck that happened between Sheridan and Blockton Saturday morning at around 4:25 am. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2004 GMC Envoy was southbound on Route F eight miles northeast of Sheridan when it crossed the center line and traveled off the east side. The driver, Xavier Mildward (28) of Maryville, overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel across the roadway and off the west side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned and came to rest on its wheels on the west side facing northeast.

A passenger, Jerrmiah Smiley (36) of Maryville, received serious injuries and was lifeflighted to Mosaic. Another passenger, Falicia Lawson (19) of Maryville, received minor injuries and was taken to Mount Ayr Hospital. Mildward received minor injuries and was taken to Mount Ayr Hospital. None were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Parnell Woman Killed in Wreck

A Parnell woman was killed in a wreck south of Parnell Monday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2001 Chevy Tahoe driven by Virginia Burns (60) of Parnell was southbound on 46 and a 2011 Case IH Steiger driven by Marlin Meyer (71) of Ravenwood pulling a farm implement was northbound at around 5:40 am that morning. The Patrol says the farm implement being pulled by Meyer crossed the center line of the roadway and the Burns vehicle struck the farm implement. The Burns vehicle came to rest in the southbound land facing south. Meyer was not injured in the accident. Burns was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. She was taken to the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home in Maryville.

One Injured in Teen Motorcycle Wreck in Hopkins

A Hopkins teen was seriously injured in a motorcycle wreck in Hopkins Saturday afternoon. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2000 Yamaha Motorcycle driven by Dalton Peve (17) was eastbound on the 600 block of East Barnard Street in Hopkins at around 3:08 pm. Peve lost control, struck a curb, and was ejected, causing him to strike a utility pole guide wire. The motorcycle came to rest off the south side of the street. Peve was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. He was taken by Ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.

One Injured in Wreck Near Maryville

A Pickering man was involved in a wreck near Maryville Friday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2006 Toyota Highlander driven by Tiffany Moore (49) of Kansas City was stopped on 148 north of Route CC one mile north of Maryville at around 5:34 pm while traffic in front was turning left. A 2002 Dodge Intrepid driven by  Mitchell Bowers (24) of Pickering attempted to break and struck the rear of the Highlander. Moore received moderate injuries and was taken to St. Francis. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Fatal Wreck Near Union Star

There was a fatal wreck near Union Star Thursday night that claimed the life of James Evans (60) of Union Star. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2007 Chevy SUV driven by Evans was northbound on 169 three miles west of Union Star at around 4:25 pm, while a 2016 Chevy Express Van driven by Eric Tamboli (32) of Belton (MO) was southbound. The SUV crossed the center line and struck the van behind the driver’s side door. The van overturned off the west side, coming to rest off its wheels facing south. The SUV spun off the west side of the road, coming to rest on its wheels facing south. Tamboli received minor injuries. Evans was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident; Tamboli was not.

Five Members of Grant City Family Injured in St. Joseph Wreck

Five members of a Grant City family were injured in a wreck in St. Joseph Friday afternoon in icy conditions. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2012 Chevy SUV driven by Ashleigh Moser (32) of Grant City was northbound and a 2001 Ford Pickup driven by Austin Moylan (22) was southbound on I-29. The pickup driven by Moylan lost control, skidded across the median, and into the northbound lanes. The front of the pickup struck the SUV in the passenger side. The pickup skidded off the east side of the roadway coming to rest facing east. The SUV came to rest northeast in the middle of northbound I-29.

All five occupants of the SUV, Ashleigh Moser, Jonathan Moser (36), Landon Moser (10), Mason Moser (4), and Nataleigh Moser (5) received moderate injuries and were taken to Mosaic by EMS. Moylan was not injured. All were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Two Injured in Truck Wreck Near Wilcox

Two people were injured in a truck wreck near Wilcox on Wednesday, August 24th. The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that a 2003 Freightliner driven by Clifford Hiles (51) of Skidmore was southbound on 71 at the Wilcox city limit at around 3:35 pm. He traveled off the west side of the road, returned to the road, overcorrected, and overturned. The vehicle came to rest facing south on the driver's side off the east side of the roadway. Hiles received minor injuries and was taken to St. Francis Hospital. A passenger, Jeremy Lamm (42) of Maryville, received moderate injuries and was taken to St. Francis. Both were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
