Tiger Girls Cruise Past Albany After Falling to Cards

Worth County’s girls cruised past Albany Wednesday after having fallen to North Andrew 44-37 the night before. The Tigers had been buried at home to North Andrew in their GRC matchup, but played much better in the rematch in the first round of the Stanberry Tournament. They were within two at halftime. “But they had three straight possessions with putbacks to start the third quarter,” said Coach Les New. North Andrew used that to propel themselves to a 20 point third quarter.

But then, Worth County played their best quarter all year as they held North Andrew to two points in the fourth quarter, but their rally came up seven points short.

The question was whether they would let down in their game with Albany the next night. Previously, in the Albany Tournament, Worth County gave everything they had against Jefferson only to fall short in the semifinal round. They subsequently fell to Princeton in the third place game after having beaten them 53-42 in the first game of the year earlier.

But Worth County came out with the same kind of energy and effort they had used in the fourth quarter of the North Andrew game the night before as they won 51-25. They held Albany to their lowest point total of the year in the process. They shut down Gabby Newman, Albany's highly-touted freshman, holding her to two points.

Regan Allee started off the scoring by hitting Kristin New for a drive. Jessi Badell got a block on Albany’s next possession and Anna Gladstone used a behind the back dribble to shake free of two green shirts and get to the hole for a layup, prompting an Albany timeout.

Kaylee McElvain hit Regan Allee for a 3-pointer out of the timeout. Riley Houts countered for Albany’s only tally of the period, but Allee pulled up and hit another 3-pointer and then Anna Gladstone got loose off a steal. Following a Worth County stop, Jessi Badell got a quick outlet to Kristin New, who aired one out to Anna Gladstone to make it 14-3, forcing them to burn another timeout.

But then Regan Allee hit Merrideth Spiers for a baseline shot and Megan Cassavaugh for a 3-pointer as she showed her two three-pointers against North Andrew were no accident. Anna Gladstone scored off yet another drive to make it 21-3 after one.

Paige Brown started off the scoring for Albany to make it 21-5, but then Anna Gladstone scored a free throw after getting an offensive board, Regan Allee hit Jessi Badell inside, Kristin New hit Regan Allee for a 3-pointer, and Kaylee McElvain jumped a pass for a layup to make it 29-5.

Emily Poppa got going for Albany as the referees were letting her take steps as long as she wanted to, and her drives closed Albany to within 31-12. Megan Cassavaugh hit Jenna Smith for a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 34-12.

Michaela Martin banked one home for Albany to make it 35-14 early in the second, but Regan Allee and Anna Gladstone hit free throws, Kaylee McElvain hit Anna Gladstone who drove through traffic to hit a layup in transition, and Jessi Badell grabbed three offensive boards in one possession and finally converted the third. Regan Allee’s free throws with 2:58 left gave Worth County its biggest lead at 44-17 in the third.

Anna Gladstone had 16 to lead the Tigers. Regan Allee had 13, Merrideth Spiers 6, Jessi Badell 5, Megan Cassavaugh, Kaylee McElvain, and Jenna Smith all had 3, and Kristin New had 2.
Jessi Badell, Regan Allee, Kaylee McElvain, and Haley Hunt all had 1 block.

Worth County, after struggling on the boards against North Andrew the night before, owned the glass against the Warriors Wednesday night, getting 47 boards. Twelve different Tigers got at least one board. Jessi Badell had 13 boards, Anna Gladstone 7, Kaylee McElvain 5, Kristin New and Jill Hardy 4, Haley Hunt, Megan Cassavaugh, and Merrideth Spiers had 3 each, Regan Allee had 2, and Jenna Smith, Christina Clementoni, and EmiLee Brown each had 1.

Kristin New had 5 assists for Worth County. Regan Allee had 4, and Kaylee McElvain and Megan Cassavaugh had 2 each.

Anna Gladstone had 6 tips to lead the Tigers. Jessi Badell had 5, Kristin New 4, Regan Allee 3, Kaylee McElvain and Maddie Taute 2, and Anna Spainhower 1.

Kristin New had 3 steals for the Tigers. Anna Gladstone, Megan Cassavaugh, Kaylee McElvain, and Jessi Badell each had 2. Regan Allee had 1.
