Northeast Nodaway’s boys won their first game of the South Harrison Tournament, but dropped their next two and were denied third place last week.
The Bluejays won their first game over South Harrison’s JV squad 65-41. They lost Eli Scroggie to a bloody nose early in the game and they had to grind this one out. They looked on their way to taking control after Spencer Weir got a putback, Dylan Mildfeldt hit all three shots of a three-shot foul, and Weir got a putback after a Mildfeldt steal to make it 12-5 after one.
Brayden Sunderman got the hot hand for South Harrison’s reserves, bringing his team back to within 16-14 at the 4:25 mark of the second, but then Dylan Vore, who had his best game as a Bluejay, got loose inside and got a pass from Cameron Staples. Spencer got a drive and then Vore got a putback to make it 22-14.
Collin Haffey’s steal cut South Harrison JV’s deficit to 25-22 early in the third, but Brayden Welch kicked one out to Dylan Mildfeldt, who splashed one home. Mildfeldt got a tip and steal and Weir got a finish, while Weir added a steal to make it 32-22 with 5:19 left.
Free throws from Weir late in the third made it 42-29, but South Harrison’s reserves had one last comeback try, getting to within 45-38 after Sunderman’s triple and Haffey’s coast to coast look.
But then Dylan Mildfeldt splashed another one home, Spencer Weir hit two free throws and added two more points off a Mildfeldt steal, and Cameron Staples stripped a purple shirt for a score to make it 54-38 and NEN was on their way.

The Bluejays then matched up against South Harrison’s varsity, and the varsity Bulldogs came away with the 63-56 victory in the semifinal round. Overlooked after an 0-3 start and being eliminated from Albany, South Harrison has been turning into a force to be reckoned with. NEN held their tall, lanky guard Treyton Campbell to 15 and sharpshooter Kinser Corbett to 10 points and no 3-pointers. But their other ballhandler, Cody Weller, went off on them and scored 21 points, including a big chunk of their free throws in the fourth quarter when they were trying to come back.
NEN struggled against South Harrison’s half court trap during a key stretch late in the first and early in the second; instead of attacking the middle, getting a quick reversal, or playing catch while advancing the ball, they were dribbling right into the trap areas and getting turnovers. Consequently, they went from being up 14-11 to being down 26-16 at the 5:19 mark of the second and could never get caught back up.
Spencer Weir had 20, while Eli Scroggie had 18 for Northeast. Dylan Mildfeldt had 7, Cameron Staples 5, and Dylan Vore and Mitchell Sherry had 2.
