Brush Enforcement Discussed at County Commission

Wayne Hayes requested cost share for a road near Route PP that has gotten brush letters. The county pays $1,200 per mile for cost share. He said that he had been making progress on the road and that it would be clear by spring. It used to be completely closed.

Other roads discussed at Monday’s meeting were Road #59 southwest of Grant City, Road #151 near Denver, Road #252 between Grant City and Allendale, and Roads #196 and #199. The county sent out a new round of brush letters for Road #167 northwest of Denver.

New Executive Director Todd Spencer of the Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Governments came to introduce himself and discuss issues around the area. Commissioners noted that abandoned buildings were becoming a growing issue; there are 31 abandoned homes in Grant City alone. The National Guard has a program to remove such homes and there are CDBG funds available.

Spencer reported that the Missouri Department of Economic Development is putting together a database for all communities to market to businesses. This includes buildings that can be made into business facilities.

Prosecutor and County Attorney Brett Hurst came to discuss legal matters with the commissioners as well as the brush law dispute between Bill Engel and the county. He said that all taxes had to be paid in full, or penalties and interest will apply. The county returned the check that Mr. Engel had sent paying the non-brush portion of his taxes. He said that the deadline to pay the taxes in full under protest was December 31st, which has already passed.
