Worth County’s girls downed Braymer for the first time ever Friday night and did so handily, 45-26. Braymer’s girls had Worth County’s number since joining the GRC, but Worth County turned on the clamps defensively, holding the Bobcats to 14 below their season average in the win. They got 29 tips, 21 steals, and held their top scorer, Jasmine Taylor, to 6 points, seven below her average.
It looked like another long night for Worth County and another long trip back home after the first quarter. Both Anna Gladstone and Regan Allee picked up two early fouls and Braymer was going hard to the boards. Maggie Phillips had the hot hand for Braymer, who went into the second with a 10-6 lead.
But then Anna Gladstone came in and got loose inside and Kristin New scored off a drive to tie it to start the second, prompting a timeout from Braymer. Taylor Francis banked one home for Braymer to make it 14-13, but then Kaylee McElvain got a putback and the hot hand for Worth County. She put up eight points in the last 4:20, while Kristin New got three steals during that same time frame.
Despite Gladstone picking up her third foul and sitting for the last 3:56, Worth County rallied with her on the bench, going on a 10-2 run to close out the half. Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer off a kickout from Kaylee McElvain to put the Tigers up 25-16 at the break.
There were some anxious moments for Worth County in the third as Gladstone picked up her fourth after scoring twice to put her team up 29-16 and Regan Allee followed her shortly afterwards. But Maggie Phillips picked up her fourth for Braymer; she was their best ballhandler and outside shooter, and her absence hurt Braymer more.
In the meantime, Worth County was able to go 10 deep and run some fresh legs in to pull away from the Bobcats. Jenna Smith hit two free throws after getting an offensive board; Jill Hardy scored after Megan Cassavaugh got a steal; Jill Hardy hit Jenna Smith for a triple with 4:13 left as their second five outscored Braymer 7-2 in the last 4:13 of the third and Worth County built up a 41-20 lead after three.
Braymer tried to put Phillips back in, but she fouled out just 26 seconds into the fourth and Regan Allee and Megan Cassavaugh hit free throws to give Worth County its biggest lead of 45-20 with 4:39 left.
Eight different Tigers scored against Braymer. Regan Allee had 13, Kaylee McElvain 10, Anna Gladstone 6, Jenna Smith 5, Jill Hardy 4, Kristin New 3, and Jessi Badell and Megan Cassavaugh 2 each.
Kaylee McElvain and Merrideth Spiers had two blocks. Haley Hunt had 1.
Jessi Badell had 9 boards to pace the Tigers. Kaylee McElvain had 6, Jill Hardy, Anna Gladstone, and Regan Allee 4 each, Kristin New 3, Megan Cassavaugh 2, and Jenna Smith and Merrideth Spiers 1 each. Nine different Tigers had boards.
Kristin New had 6 assists for the Tigers. Jill Hardy and Kaylee McElvain had 2 each, and Anna Gladstone, Regan Allee, and Megan Cassavaugh had 1 each.
Kristin New had 8 tips for the Tigers. Jenna Smith and Regan Allee had 4, Megan Cassavaugh and Jessi Badell had 3 each, Jill Hardy, Anna Gladstone, and Braidy Hunt had 2 each, and Kaylee McElvain had 1. Nine different Tigers had tips.
