Worth County’s wrestlers went 2-0 in a home meet Thursday night in a triangular match between Albany, Mount Ayr, and South Harrison. The two Worth County athletes, Jeremy Wimer and Will Engel, are on the Albany team as part of the two schools’ cooperative agreement. A third, Nate Adwell, didn’t compete due to illness.
Jeremy Wimer got his victory against Spencer Peterson (South Harrison). Wimer made quick work of Peterson and pinned him at the 1:33 mark of the first period. They competed in the 120 division.
Will Engel got his win over Gradyn Linthicum (South Harrison). It started off as a close fight, but then Will Engel took control late in the first quarter and got Linthicum in a headlock and a pin with 8.1 seconds remaining in the first period for the win.
In the other Albany meets, Mathew Goodpasture and Jaren Van Meter got into a lively duel, with Van Meter leading 8-6 after one period. But then Van Meter took control and got head on points 15-8 before pinning Goodpasture at the 33.2 second mark of the second quarter. Quentin Gregg pinned Goodpasture early in the second quarter, stopping the match at the 1:33 mark of the period.
The two big men of the event, Blade Powers (Albany) and Josh Cox (Mount Ayr), hooked up in the 285+ meet. They both sought to overpower each other in a first period that went scoreless. Cox took control in the second and ran up a 6-0 lead before Powers was saved by the buzzer. Powers nearly pulled off a reversal and pin in the closing seconds, but could not quite do it and Cox won the 8-2 decision.
In other action, Wes Armstrong (Mount Ayr) won the quickest match as he pinned Peyton Spurling (South Harrison) just 12 seconds into their match in the 195 meet. Bryce Shaha (Mount Ayr) pinned Timmy Williams (South Harrison) at the 41.2 second mark of the second period.
In the 113 division, Trae Ehlen (Mount Ayr) got ahead 6-0 over Nick Williams (South Harrison). Williams escaped and had the dominant position over Ehlen, but Ehlen pulled off a reversal and a pin at the 18 second mark of the second.
The closest battle came between Briar Knapp (Mount Ayr) and Jaren Van Meter (South Harrison) in the 126. Neither wrestler could take control until the third period. Knapp got an escape to take a 1-0 lead, but then Knapp got a takedown and a 2-1 victory for South Harrison’s lone victory over Mount Ayr.
Griffin Jennings (South Harrison) got an early 2-0 lead over Ryker Hickman (Mount Ayr) in the 132, but Hickman took control and had Jennings in an iron grip post of the way, eventually winning a 12-2 decision.
