Vanessa Wiegand Triples Twice, Jayden Goble Goes Deep as Pattonsburg Wins 19-18

A shorthanded Pattonsburg squad, playing without its pitcher, Addie Iddings, won a wild 19-18 game over Tri-County that needed nine innings to complete. Neither side could put the other side away and both teams committed 11 errors each in the game. Jayden Goble went deep in the vast Tri-County field while Vanessa Weigand had two triples.

At first, it looked like Panthers all the way when consecutive errors plated the first run and Kaitlyn Estes doubled home Emsleigh McCrary to make it 2-0. Vanessa Weigand singled in Estes to make it 3-0 in the first.

Rosalynn Cameron caught Allie Prescott’s line drive in the first inning and the Mustangs went in order. Jayden Goble singled to left with one out in the second and stole second with one out. She stole second and Emsleigh McCrary singled her home to make it 4-0. Isabelle Burger singled as McCarry took second and they took second and third on a passed ball. Kaitlyn Estes doubled them both home to make it 6-0.

But with two outs in the Mustang second, the toll of players playing out of position began to tell. Five out of six Tri-County batters reached on errors at one point; by the time the dust had settled, the Panther lead had disappeared and Tri-County led 7-6 before first baseman Claire Christensen finally took care of Lily Turner’s pop fly to end the inning.

Kara Bernardino singled to right to start the Pattonsburg third, and Rosalynn Cameron and Cheyenne Miller walked. Walks lead to runs and sure enough, Jayden Goble singled in Cameron and Bernardino as Miller took second to put Pattonsburg back in front 8-7. Goble later scored on an error to raise it to 9-7. Claire Christensen grounded out in the fourth to score Vanessa Weigand after Vanessa had hit the first of her two triples to make it 10-7. The Panthers raised their lead to 11-7 in the fifth after Jayden Goble hit an inside-the-park home run in the vast Mustang field.

But then the bottom of the order came through for Tri-County in their half of the fifth. Dani Critten walked and Adyson Morris hit a pop fly single beyond the reach of third baseman Vanessa Weigand to bring up the heart of the order. They took second and third on a passed ball and Allie Prescott reached on an error to score Critten to make it 11-8. Kamran Marrs reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Morris and Prescott proceeded to score on passed balls to cut the Mustang deficit to 11-10. Second baseman Cheyenne Miller caught a pop fly and fielded a ground ball to get Pattonsburg out of the inning still ahead.

Kaitlyn Estes was plunked to start the Panther sixth. Vanessa Wiegand reached on an error to put Estes on second. They took second and third on a passed ball. Kaitlyn Estes was out trying to score on another passed ball as Wiegand took third. Kara Bernardino reached on an error on what would have been the third out as Pattonsburg scored anyway to make it 12-10.

But in the Tri-County sixth, the miscues caught up with Pattonsburg as Dani Critten scored on a passed ball to make it 12-11 and then Kamran Marrs circled the bases after yet another Pattonsburg error to tie it at 12-12.

Pattonsburg had two outs and nobody on in the seventh, with Tri-County set to try for a walkoff. But Emsleigh McCrary kept the inning alive with a single. Isabella Burger reached on an error as McCrary came all the way around to score from first to make it 13-12. But Dani Critten beat out an infield hit on what would have been Tri-County’s final out and Lily Turner scored to tie it at 13.

Vanessa Weigand walked to lead off the Pattonsburg eighth. Walks lead to runs; Claire Christensen struck out and Kara Bernardino grounded out as Weigand took second. The walk came back to bite Tri-County as Rosalynn Cameron reached on an error as Weigand scored to put Pattonsburg in front 14-13. But Tri-County once again got the run right back when Allie Prescott scored on a passed ball to make it 14-14. Center fielder Rosalynn Cameron snagged Maddie Page’s fly ball to prevent any further damage.

Jayden Goble reached on an error to start the Pattonsburg ninth. She stole second and came all the way around to score when the throw got away to make it 15-14.

Emsleigh McCrary doubled to restart the Panther ninth and Isabella Burger singled her to third. Kaitlyn Estes was plunked to load the bases. Vanessa Weigand emptied the bases and tripled into the vast outfield at Tri-County, making it 18-14. Claire Christensen grounded out to score her to make it 19-14.

But the cadenza was just beginning as the bottom of the order came through once again for Tri-County. Addison Dodds was plunked and Dani Critten walked. Adyson Morris reached second on an error as Dodds scored to make it 19-15 and Critten took third. Allie Prescott singled in two to make it 19-17. Kamran Marrs reached on an error as Prescott took third. Marrs took second on defensive indifference. Alexis Neeley struck out for the second out. Prescott scored on a passed ball to make it 19-18 as Marrs took third with the tying run, but Bailey Neeley grounded out to second for the final out.

Emsleigh McCrary had four hits. Jayden Goble and Vanessa Weigand had three, and Isabella Burger, Kaitlyn Estes, and Kara Bernardino had two. Kaitlyn Estes had two doubles, while Emsleigh McCrary and Kara Bernardino had one. Vanessa Weigand had two triples while Jayden Goble had a home run. Jayden Goble had four stolen bases while Rosalynn Cameron and Vanessa Weigand had one each.
