The Worth County School Board voted to hire Christy Scadden as its new district bookkeeper at its regular Board of Education meeting Wednesday. The school has openings for a high school science teacher for the second semester of the school year as well as a special education teacher for the second semester of the school year.
The school rated the Health Services program as “Excellent.” Strengths listed include the fact that the Health Aide insures that students have immunizations, vision screens, fluoride treatments, human growth lessons, handwashing, and daily medications. School and staff were trained in CPR and AED. The health office is kept clean and organized and the staff is encouraged with wellness challenges.
Elementary Principal Amber Hawk reported on the Coderz Club. Mission to Frozen Island leaders include Nolan Gilland, Baylor Sagel, and Finn Sherer. Mission 2 Moving Along leaders include Desmond Dannar, Sophia Combs, and Malary Fojtik.
The Elementary is once again having a Kindness Club. Mrs. Pottorff and Mrs. Rush are the co-sponsors. There are 30 participants and will meet every third Tuesday of the month to plan random acts of kindness around the school and community.
Tutoring has started for students who are struggling.
There have been 20 office referrals for the first quarter of this year, up from 18 last year and 11 in 2023-24. Offenses range from lying, hitting, messing around, use of language, and threats.
The Kindergarten made a field trip to Schweizer Orchard on October 3rd.
Some of the football boys and cheerleaders greeted students off the bus on October 10th before the Homecoming celebrations.
The Grant City Fire Department gave fire truck rides for grades PK through 3rd grade. They also purchased fire prevention and safety items for all grade levels.
Title 1 Family Night was well-attended.
Mrs. Lischer’s first grade class received smarties for being the class that had 100% reading incentive papers turned in.
The class with the highest attendance rate for September was Ms. Torri’s Kindergarten class, with a rate of 99.23%. They received fruit roll-ups. Every class had an attendance rate of at least 95.52%.
Different classes decorated the custodian door to show their appreciation.
High School Principal Josh Smith reported on different projects being done by students.
American History students are reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin and doing reflections and reviews and studying how it may have changed American perspectives about slavery before the Civil War.
8th Grade Social Studies classes are comparing the factors that led European nations to settle in the New World and why other parties wanted to derail their expeditions.
Seventh Grade Art students are working with pencil and paint to study color theory, form, and value and working with paper mache media.
The winner of the High School Attendance challenge was the seventh grade with an attendance rate of 98.57%. The next group was the eighth grade with a rate of 97.26%. The next group was the juniors with a 96.53% attendance rate.
There are currently 14 students in Vo-Tech this year.
Activities Director Cree Beverlin reported that junior high basketball practices have started and have roughly 20 athletes.
The board voted to purchase a Bobcat T595 T4 V2 skid loader from Northwest Implement for $95,494.70. 75% of the funds will be paid for from Round 2 of the Enhancement Grant.
The board voted to purchase an 82x16x6 trailer from Highway 71 Trailer Superstore for $11,974. 75% of the funds will be paid for from Route 2 of the Enhancement Grant.
Mrs. Tracy and Mrs. Humphrey talked to the board about the Title program. Around 120 people attended the recent event to learn more about it.
The next regular meeting will be November 19th at 6 pm.
