Cole Ruby Gashes Bulldogs Early and Often; Wyatt Hill Adds Scoop and Score

Cole Ruby gashed Stanberry early and often on the ground and Wyatt Hill added the dagger with a scoop and score as Worth County pulled away to a 72-0 halftime victory over Stanberry. The Bulldogs were coming off a 63-48 win over Princeton for their first win, but they are a young team, with mostly freshmen and sophomores and were no match for Worth County. Pattonsburg kept the pressure on Worth County; after St. Joseph Christian threw an early scare into them, trailing only 26-20 halfway through the second quarter, Pattonsburg pulled away for the 58-32 win. North Andrew threw a scare into King City after struggling against Albany and the Wildkats were playing without their starting quarterback, but the Wildkats took care of business as well with a 42-32 win. With the win, Coach Jon Adwell won his 50th game.

Worth County only needed 14 plays from scrimmage to get the win. Nine of their plays went for scores, and they had 355 yards of total offense. Stanberry was held to five yards. In 2018, Worth County, playing at Albany, only needed nine plays from scrimmage to get a halftime win over the Warriors.

Stanberry got the ball early and started at their own 27. Pax Schieber showed some promise as a kick returner, catching everything on the run and taking it back to put Stanberry in good field position. But Schieber was met by Ethan Lininger on the first play and Bo Collins and a blitzing Brayden Stevens on the next. Jude Archer broke up a third-down pass play and Stanberry was forced to punt. Cole Ruby was dropped on the first play, but then Brayden Stevens took it 56 yards to the house on the next with 9:39 left for Worth County's first score. Cole Ruby got blocks from Hayden Sanders and Lucas Frisch and added the extra points to make it 8-0. Worth County converted on all of its extra points.

The Bulldogs got their most promising drive going on the next series when Schieber ripped off gains of 9 and 6 yards to the Tiger 36. On third and seven at the 33, Schieber ripped off 14 more to the 19. But then the Tiger defense stiffened, with Ethan Lininger, Sawyer Thurman, and Lucas Frisch stopping him on the first play, Lininger stopping Max Hilton on the next, and Wyatt Hill breaking up a pass on third and long. On fourth down, quarterback Drew Parman rolled out and tried to dump it off to Schieber in the open field, but he was swarmed under at the 23 and Worth County took over on downs. A holding penalty by Worth County erased a long touchdown run, but that only made things more interesting. Cole Ruby burst into the open and took it 66 yards to the house with 4:23 left. Bo Collins caught a pass for the extra points to make it 16-0.

On Stanberry's next series, a mixup on a jet sweep play turned into a fumble and Wyatt Hill pounced on it at the Bulldog 27. Hayden Sanders led Caleb New too far on a pass play, but then Lucas Frisch got a quick hitter, got a block from Ryder Smyser, and took it to the house with 3:17 left. Cole Ruby took a counter play in for the extra points to make it 24-0.

Stanberry started at its own 27. Drew Parman took an option play three yards on the first play to the 30. They tried to spring Schieber loose on the next play, but Sawyer Thurman pursued the play down the line, and he and Ryder Smyser dropped him for a loss back to the 28. A false start moved it back to the 23. Schieber was open for an apparent score, but Parman led him too far and Stanberry was forced to punt. Worth County started at its own 20, and Cole Ruby got a block from Ethan Lininger on a simple dive play. That was all he needed and he took it to the house again with 1:03 left in the first quarter. Brayden Stevens got a block from Lucas Frisch and added the extra points to make it 32-0.

Schieber was met by Brayden Stevens for just one yard after Stanberry started at its own 30. They faked the jet sweep; Drew Parman kept it but was met by Wyatt Hill after a one-yard gain. An incomplete pass forced a three and out. Worth County was pinned at its own 10 after a penalty, but that only made things more interesting. Bo Collins caught a 14-yard pass and would have broken it had not Parman made a great tackle on him. Brayden Stevens got loose around the edges for 35 yards to the Stanberry 21. Cole Ruby got blocks from Lucas Frisch and Hayden Sanders and took it the rest of the way with 10:55 left in the second quarter. Jude Archer added the extra points to make it 40-0.

Stanberry started at its own 30, but Ethan Lininger, Wyatt Hill, and Bo Collins drove him back three yards. Lucas Frisch dropped him for a loss back to the 26. Stanberry tried a pass, but Ethan Lininger was there for a sack and Stanberry was forced to punt. Hayden Sanders ripped off 15 yards and Jude Archer picked up two more to the Stanberry 39. Cole Ruby got a block from Sawyer Thurman and took it to the house with 7:38 left. Bo Collins caught the extra point pass to make it 48-0. Cole Ruby finished with five carries for 175 yards.

Jordan Dannar had a big hit on the kickoff after Quinn Jensen tried to return a squib kick at the 32. Lucas Frisch drove back Schieber to the 31 and Ryder Smyser met Max Hilton for no gain to set up third and 11. Ryder Smyser got a sack on the next play and Stanberry was forced to punt. Jude Archer ran back the punt and ran through the Stanberry defense like it wasn't even there with 5:25 left. Bo Collins was shaken up going after an errant pass on the conversion try, but Stanberry had too many men on the field, giving Worth County another chance. Hayden Sanders ran it in to make it 56-0. Collins was fine and finished the game.

Stanberry tried Schieber two more times after Lucas Frisch kicked it into the end zone, but Brayden Murphy held the line both times for the Tigers. On third and long from the 16, Ryder Smyser got loose for his second sack of the game and Wyatt Hill was there for the scoop and score, causing Stanberry to throw in the towel. Dylan Smith juked his defender and got loose in the back of the end zone, making it 64-0 with 3:48 left.

Jace Burns and Bentin Roberts had tackles for loss on the next series before Roberts got a sack to force a three and out. A bad snap turned into a low line drive kick and Jordan Dannar recovered it on the Stanberry 22. He got a block from Bentin Roberts and took a quick pitch 19 yards to the three and then Bentin Roberts got loose on a pitchout and had all day to run it in for the last score with 1:16 left. Wyatt Scadden caught the extra point pass from Brock Healy to make it 72-0 and round out the scoring.
