Gilman City's junior high girls were locked in a tight game Thursday with Winston. Chyles Webb was on fire for the Hawks, with all but two of the Hawks' points until the 3:19 mark of the third quarter. Gilman City had scored the first four points of the third quarter, but it still had the feel of a close game with the Redbirds. The Hawks were up 19-11 after leading 15-11 at the half. But then Carsynn Robertson came off the bench and everything changed in a heartbeat. She knocked down a 3-pointer right off the bat to make it 22-11, and then proceed to get some tips, rebounds, and steals for the Hawks.
Winston continued to fight on but never got their deficit below double digits after Robertson's blow. Chyles Webb knocked one down from the high post to make it 24-10.
Gracie Youtsey, who had torched North Harrison for 24 of Winston's 28 points that night, answered with a free throw, but Emmery Smith finally knocked one down from the wing before Ilaina Scott knocked one down from the wing at the third quarter buzzer to make it 26-14.
Nova Smith got on the board for Gilman City and had the hot hand in the fourth, pushing it to as much as 30-16 as Autumn Clevenger came off the bench and bottled up Youtsey before she finally got untracked to bring Winston to within 30-20. But Aspen Wyatt came back in and held strong against Youtsey, even stuffing her on one occasion down the stretch, and Winston went scoreless for the last 3:46.
The first part of the game was a scoring duel between Chyles Webb and Gracie Youtsey. Youtsey began the game by bulldozing to the basket at will to give her team a 5-3 lead early on. But then Chyles Webb answered the challenge, pulling up twice when the Redbirds didn't pick her up bringing the ball down the court and knocked down back-to-back jacks to put Gilman City up 9-5 after one. Youtsey and the Redbirds knotted it again at 9-9, but Chyles Webb stole the ball after Winston had a chance to go ahead and converted on the other end. She got a nice skip pass from Emmery Smith to make it 13-9. Youtsey cut it to 13-11, but Webb cut inside and got a pass to make it 15-11 at the half.
Aspen Wyatt cleaned up after Webb missed a layup to start the second half and Webb took on two Redbird defenders and finished over Youtsey before Robertson came on with her dagger.

The Hawks lost to a tough Grundy County squad but then responded the next night against Tri-County. The Mustangs didn't have enough girls to field a team, so they had some of their boys' players play over on the girls' team. It didn't matter as the Hawks ran away with the game and got back on the winning track. The theme for the Hawks could be Kenny Loggins' "Playing with the Boys." Officially, the game counted as a forfeit, since Tri-County didn't have enough girls.
The boys were not so fortunate as they led Hudson Warner run wild, scoring 27 points for the Redbirds in a 38-18 defeat. The Hawks were ice-cold the whole first half and turned the ball over 27 times for the game, digging themselves into a 27-4 hole at the half. They came out in the last two quarters with one of their best halves of the year, cutting their deficit down to 33-16 at one point before Walker Estep scored five quick points to provide the dagger at the end.
