The North Nodaway school board, at their regular meeting Wednesday, voted to name Barrett Lodge as a new substitute teacher for the district.
The board approved the purchase of a $46,500 HVAC system for the Elementary from Sleek Creek HVAC of Stanberry. The bid includes:
—Removal and disposal of the old rooftop central air unit and installation of the new one;
—Installation of a new RUUD 10-ton RTU with electric heat package;
—Installation of new curb adapter to allow the new unit to fit right on the old roof curb;
—Reinstallation of electricity and control wiring to the new system;
—Installation of an economizer to allow the unit to draw in air from the outdoors when necessary.
The bid includes the price of a crane to remove the old unit and set the new unit.
The board voted to declare the following items as surplus property:
—Table saw with 7-foot cutting platform;
—Miller Thunderbolt 325-Stick Welder, 230-volt single phase;
—Lincoln Electric 100 SP 125 Plus Wire Welder;
—Jet horizontal/vertical band saw;
—Floor mount Rockwell Drill Press.
Bids will be accepted on each item beginning on November 3rd, 8 am and closing on November 14th at noon at the district Superintendent’s Office. All items are sold as is, with no guarantees.
The board approved early graduation for students Roger Wolf and Addalea Barcus, who will graduate from the school in December. Krista Barcus abstained on the vote for Addalea Barcus. Approval is contingent on the students meeting the graduation requirements set by the State of Missouri and the North Nodaway School Board.
The board approved the Class of 2026 to travel to Branson for their Senior Trip from May 11th to 14th, where they will stay at Watermill Cove.
Elementary Principal Heather Townsend reported the following:
—The school has completed all fall drills;
—Vision screening has been completed;
—Kindergarten Assessment has been completed;
—Dyslexia requirements have been completed;
—Senate Bill 681 lead testing requirements have been completed;
—Rep. Jeff Farnan toured the building on October 7th;
—Theresa was honored for Custodial Appreciation Day.
The school is now in year two with Positive Behavior Interventions. This is a system that is based on recognizing and rewarding positive behaviors, not merely punishing negative behaviors. The school reviewed data over the last three years. In the period from August 15th to October 9th, 2023, there were 118 office referrals. In 2024, there were 35 office referrals. In 2025, there were five office referrals.
Teachers have been focusing on improving the literacy skills of their students.
High School Principal Cody Jenkins reported that there are 12 boys and 12 girls out for junior high basketball. Junior high volleyball went 5-4, posting their first-ever winning season. Platte Valley Junior High Football went 4-1.
Eighth graders attended Manufacturing Day at local businesses.
Ten seniors from all three schools were recognized at Senior Night during the Platte Valley/South Holt game at Hopkins Friday, won by Platte Valley 62-44.
The FFA went to Northwest on October 2nd to compete in fall competitions. The Flower team was first. The Dairy Foods team was eighth. The Entomology team was seventh. The Agronomy team was fourth. The Nursery team was seventh.
There are 14 students participating in the Northwest Vo-Tech program this year.
There will be two student teachers during the next semester; one will be in Ag and the other will be in Art.
Superintendent Chris Turpin reported that the Clayton Scott film, “The Pastor,” will be filmed at North Nodaway starting October 29th.
Rep. Jeff Farnan toured North Nodaway’s facilities. Turpin discussed with Rep. Farnan how the Governor’s task force on educational funding’s proposals would impact the district. Two of three independent groups have supplied the task force with recommendations to phase out the “hold harmless” clause, which one proposal shows North Nodaway losing $318,000 a year.
The Commons doors are being replaced this week by Missouri Glass. The school has received the insurance check from Wamco to pay for all the repairs from the damage they caused.
The school’s Annual Progress Report will be open to the public on November 6th.
Culture and climate surveys will be going out this month to staff, students, and parents to fill out. The data will be presented to the board at a future meeting.
The Homecoming celebrations at North Nodaway were a success. Blaine Clements and Adalea Barcus were king and queen. The Grand Marshall was James Simmelink, who served as Superintendent at North Nodaway before Mr. Turpin.
