Worth County’s junior high capped off back-to-back undefeated seasons with a 78-0 win over Stanberry Monday.
The Tigers got started early after Stanberry tried an unsuccessful onsides kick that Hudson Cameron pounced on at the 37. Worth County only needed one play to take advantage of the good field position as quarterback Max Hiatt aired it out to Cole Hardy with 7:49 left in the first quarter. On the extra point try, Hudson Cameron took a quick pitch, broke a couple of tackles, and made it in to make it 8-0.
Stanberry got its most promising drive going on the next series. After an offsides penalty, a short pass to Caiden Jensen got them the first down. Carter Mattson showed some skill as a runningback, taking a quick pitch 17 yards down to the Tiger 20. A pass interference put it on the 11, where it was second and one. But then Cole Hardy broke up a pass and then Jarrett Gilland and Hudson Cameron stuffed a run on third down. On fourth and one, Silas Brown jumped a short pass and took it the other way to the house with 3:31 left. Cole Hardy fumbled an option pitch but picked it back up and ran it in to make it 16-0.
Hudson Cameron came in on a blitz to force an incompletion and then had a pass breakup to stifle Stanberry on the next series. A short pass went nowhere and Stanberry was forced to punt. Cole Hardy took the punt, got blocks from Gunnar Smith and Camden Allen, and took it to the house with 2:25 left in the first. Hudson Cameron got a block from Jakob Herbert and ran in the extra points to make it 24-0.
A false start put Stanberry behind the sticks and Weston Hill had a tackle for loss to set up third and long. Cole Hardy broke up a pass and Stanberry was forced to punt. The kick was shanked and Worth County had the ball on its own 38. Max Hiatt got loose for 11 yards to the 31 and Cole Hardy took an option seven yards to the 24. A false start put the Tigers back on the 29. On the next play, Max Hiatt dropped back to pass and came under a heavy rush. But he got the ball away to Brock Adwell, and he broke tackle after tackle as he rumbled down the right sideline to the house. Max Hiatt took the extra point try, ran into a wall up the middle, and bounced outside to run it in and make it 32-0.
It only took Worth County two plays to get the ball back after Cole Hardy got a pick and ran it back to the 40. Cole Hardy got loose on a sweep and outran everyone down the left side to the house with 7:20 left in the half. Cole took it down the right side for the extra point try, Hudson Cameron had a pancake block, and Cole added the extra points to make it 40-0.
Ian Jensen kept getting good runbacks for Stanberry to put them in good field position, but once again, they couldn’t do anything with it. They had a manageable down and distance at third and six at the 36, but two straight incompletions gave the ball back to the Tigers on downs. A botched screen went nowhere, but then Worth County tried some razzle-dazzle as Max Hiatt pitched it back to Hudson Cameron, who threw it back to Max Hiatt for a perfect screen pass that carried 25 yards to the 15. A false start moved it back to the 20, but Hudson Cameron got 12 back to the 8 and then ran through the Stanberry defense like it wasn’t even there to make it 46-0 with 4:12 left in the first half.
Once again, the turnover bug bit Stanberry as they tried to air it out, but Cole Hardy provided perfect safety help and got a pick at the 13 for his second pick and Stanberry’s third turnover. Max Hiatt threw a short pass to Weston Hill and he got his first catch all year and broke tackle after tackle as he rumbled 60 yards to the Stanberry 7 before he was finally brought down. Some more razzle dazzle followed as Cole Hardy took a reverse, pulled up, and threw a strike to Hudson Cameron with 2:29 left for a score. On the extra point try, Cole Hardy weaved his way through traffic, got blocks from Jakob Herbert and Gunnar Smith, and took it to the house to make it 54-0.
Jensen got one of his long runbacks, this time to the Tiger 25, but Hudson Cameron blew up a running play, Camden Allen stood his ground on a sweep, and Silas Brown got his second pick of the game to kill Stanberry’s last scoring try before the half.
Hudson Cameron stuffed a running play, then a false start pushed Stanberry to the 34. Gunnar Smith stuffed a running play and then Cole Hardy got his third pick of the day, got a block from Camden Allen, and took it to the house as he started on the right side and weaved his way to the left to make it 60-0 with 4:55 left in the third.
Jarrett Gilland forced a couple of quarterback hurries, and then Hudson Cameron got a sack as Stanberry was forced to punt. Worth County started at their own 21, and once again, a short pass to Brock Adwell turned to gold as he broke tackle after tackle as he rumbled down the field to the house with 42 seconds left in the third. An option play to Camden Allen got the extra points as Worth County led 68-0.
Stanberry started on its own 23 and were driven back as Camden Allen stuffed a run, a false start moved them back to the 17, Jarrett Gilland dropped Stanberry after a fumbled pitch to the 11, and then Mason Moser had a sack in the end zone with 5:11 left in the game to make it 70-0.
Gunnar Smith and Jakob Herbert took turns carrying the ball, with Smith taking it to the house from 16 yards for Worth County’s final score. Herbert added the extra points.
