Jayden Goble, Kara Bernardino Go Off as Pattonsburg Clinches Winning Season

Jayden Goble and Kara Bernardino had big nights for Pattonsburg as their softball team went off in the first and fourth innings and came away with a 14-2 win over Milan on senior night Monday. Addie Iddings struck out ten on the mound.

Goble was 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBI’s. Kara Bernardino did not get retired all night and was 2 for 2 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Goble had two steals, while Addie Iddings and Vanessa Weigand had doubles.

First baseman Kaitlyn Estes made a catch in the field to stop Milan in the top of the first. Goble reached on an error in the bottom of the first and opened the floodgates. She stole second and Addie Iddings doubled her home. Isabella Burger reached second on an error and Iddings scored to make it 2-0. Claire Christensen (running for Burger) was caught stealing third and Estes popped out, but Emsleigh McCrary reached on an error. Vanessa Weigand singled her to third and took second on an error, and Kara Bernardino singled them home to make it 4-0.

Catcher Isabella Burger and centerfielder Rosalynn Cameron made catches in the field to help keep Milan off the board in the second. In the Panther second, Jayden Goble singled and a pair of errors in the field by Milan allowed her to come around to score to make it 5-0.

Pattonsburg made three of its four errors in the third inning as Milan cut their deficit to 5-2, but then Kara Bernardino singled, stole second, and came home on Rosalynn Cameron’s infield hit and a throwing error to make it 6-2.

Left fielder Carlie Pittsenbarger made a catch in the field in the top of the fourth.

It was still 6-2 going into the bottom of the fourth and the first two Pattonsburg batters grounded out. It looked like they would go quietly until Isabella Burger got hit by a pitch and the floodgates opened. Kaitlyn Estes reached on a dropped fly and Claire Christensen took third. Estes took second on defensive indifference and Emersyn McCrary showed the same kind of speed she showed in the Gilman City game, beating out an infield hit as Christensen scored and Estes took third. McCrary took second on defensive indifference and then Estes scored on an error to make it 8-2. Vanessa Weigand doubled to center as McCrary scored to make it 9-2.

Back to back walks loaded the bases and then Cheyenne Miller singled to center to score Bernardino and Weigand and an error out Miller at second and Rosalynn Cameron at third. Jayden Goble singled in two more to make it 13-2 and stole second. Addie Iddings singled her home to make it 14-2. The Panthers had scored eight runs with two outs in the frame.

With the win, Pattonsburg clinched a winning season, far from what people had expected from them at the beginning of the season after they had lost Kaitlyn Jones and Shealynn Pliley from last year.

The team honored its lone senior, Kara Bernardino, at the game. Her speed on the basepaths and in the outfield will be missed, and she has been steadily improving her hitting as the year progressed.

The Panthers had eight different players get hits at Monday’s game and they got 12 hits as a team.
