Tiger Boys Drop Six Overtime Game 117-111

Worth County’s boys dropped a six overtime thriller to Lafayette JV Wednesday night 117-111 as they were ousted from the Stanberry Tournament. They first dropped a 64-63 heartbreaker to Platte Valley, which hit a last-second three pointer the night before to beat the Tigers. The Tigers led by as much as 17 points to the Irish, but could not buy a stop down the stretch, and the Irish rallied to force overtime.

The rest of the game was a battle of attrition, to see which team would start fouling out first. Finally, Aydan Gladstone and Grant Cameron fouled out in the fifth overtime, and the green shirts took over in the sixth.

The game set several records. It was the highest combined point total by both teams; Lowe of the Irish had 43 points to set the tournament record for a single game. Alex Rinehart and Aydan Gladstone had 38 points and 34 points respectively; it was the first time in school history that two Tigers had broken the 30 point barrier in the same night.

The game did not set the record for most overtimes; in 1983-84, Jefferson and King City played to seven overtimes. More recently, in 2012, Northeast Nodaway won a six overtime game against King City 100-93 to take the third place trophy in the King City Tournament.

The game started out innocently enough as neither team could take control and Worth County led 16-14 after one. But in the second, Worth County heated up; Jackson Smith, normally a role player, heated up and scored six along with Jackson Runde. Aydan Gladstone added 5. Worth County scored six 3-pointers in the period as they moved ahead to a 38-31 lead at the half.

The lead grew to double digits early in the third quarter when Jackson Runde aired one out to Tyler New, who fed Alex Rinehart to make it 46-35. The lead grew to 15 when Aydan Gladstone hit for three from the top of the key, Jackson Smith took a charge on defense, and then buried a long two from the top of the key to make it 55-40. Alex Rinehart scored off a drive and got loose in transition to make it 62-46. By the time the dust had settled, Worth County had scored 26 points in the period and had taken a 64-50 lead.

The lead grew to 17 early in the fourth when Aydan Gladstone hit a couple of free throws and Jackson Runde added a steal to make it 70-53.

But from there, Worth County could not buy a stop as Lafayette started raining three pointers on Worth County and the Tigers couldn’t buy a stop. Aydan Gladstone picked up his fourth foul, and the ensuing three point play swung the momentum back in Lafayette’s favor. It didn’t help that Worth County was giving second and third chances during that stretch, and jacked up a pair of ill-advised 3-pointers.

By the time the dust had settled, the lead was down to 71-67. Alex Rinehart cleaned up in transition to make it 73-67, but George Galloway scored off a drive and Lowe added a 3-pointer after another missed boxout gave the Irish another second chance to make it 73-72. Alex Rinehart scored off a drive to make it 75-72, but Zeit banked home a guarded three with 20 seconds left to force overtime.

Worth County scored the first four points of the first overtime off an inside shot from Rinehart and two free throws from Tyler New, but Lowe went off, scoring seven straight points for the Irish to put his team up 82-80. Aydan Gladstone scored off a drive with 21 seconds to force another overtime.

Neither side could get going in the second overtime as two Gladstone free throws were answered by a transition basket from Galloway, and the game went to a third overtime.

In the third overtime, Lowe hit another 3-pointer to make it 89-88 and the Irish were up 91-89, but then Grant Cameron found Aydan Gladstone backdoor with five seconds left to force a fourth overtime.

In the fourth overtime, the game was tied at 93 and 95 before Alex Rinehart hit a 3-pointer to put the Tigers in front 98-95. But Shell went off for Lafayette to put his team back in front 99-98. Rinehart hit another 3-pointer, but Saunders scored off a drive to tie it at 101 and force a fifth overtime.

In the fifth overtime, Aydan Gladstone hit two free throws, but then was called for a charge, and Grant Cameron fouled out on the ensuing possession. Alex Rinehart scored off a drive to put Worth County up 105-101, but then Lowe hit a guarded three with 36 seconds left to tie it at 107, and Worth County could not convert, forcing a sixth overtime.

The game was tied at 109 and 111, but Worth County finally wore down without two of their regular players in, and Lafayette scored the last six points to get the win.

Alex Rinehart had 38 points. Aydan Gladstone had 34, Jackson Runde 19, Jackson Smith 10, Tyler New 6, and Grant Cameron 4.

Jackson Runde had 21 boards to lead the Tigers. Alex Rinehart had 14, Aydan Gladstone 9, Jackson Smith 6, Tyler New 3, and Grant Cameron 2.
